Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is progress? I'm a big fan of Brother, but while this printer is okay, it is not as good as a previous MFC (J480 I think). Doesn't have a feeder tray and doesn't do duplex printing. Haven't tried the scan feature yet, but that too may not be as good.

I must say, I have been a fan of HP for years, but once I got started with this Brother printer I became a huge fan! Out of the box setup was easy and quick, 5 simple steps was all that it took to get me ready to print. It connects in your choice of 3 ways, wireless, wireless direct, or computer and connects with Brother mobile app which allows you to print from all of your devices which means you can print, copy, or scan on the go. It comes with one years worth of ink, and the page gauge monitors your ink usage so that you can get ink delivered to your door for a small fee when needed with out placing an order. It has great vivid color, and prints very quickly. I highly recommend this printer it will give you a new out look on printers.

This works well enough as a printer, although it is not as good on ink usage as reviewers said. Ink level shows about half down in less than four months of moderate use. Scanning a page seems to function the same as copy, producing a second paper page. I want to be able to scan to the computer, which should be possible but it is tough to find the information on how to do this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 2nd brother, how I missed my last one. only complaint would be ink, always seems i need more...lol. my 2nd brother printer, my first lasted six years printing 1000 pages a week at least. loved it, when it finally died, and I mean I used it until it fell apart and was beyond repair, I replaced with an HP that boasted the best ink prices and number of pages per refill on the market. what they didn't boast about was the replacement printer drum was half the cost of the printer, and only lasted half as long as advertised. well it's been less then two years and I have a brother again. hopefully this last like my last brother. only down side is I'll have to replace the ink cartridge every week with my needs.

I expected a simple installation process with print, scan, copy, and wireless functions all installed in a few minutes with no complications. What I got was several hours installing and deinstalling before getting the print, copy, and wireless functions to work. Still have no scan function and instructions say I need to deinstall drivers before attempting to reinstall the software. UGG!

I only replaced the original because I wanted a scanner that was included in the printer and not a separate piece of equipment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brother printer It was a gift to me, the hook up required 2 levels of technical support, once we got it hooked up (several hours later) it works well. Ink levels on paper are not the best, they are faded; but will manage. The "Promise" of ink included for 1 year is misleading as I am running out and they said by all measurements and statistics (bla bla bla) it would last me about 1 yea r-not true. I am less than half in in the 3 months I have had it. It is a better product than HP. For Sure!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Never buying brother again I bought this printer with the understanding that it comes with 1 year of ink the estimated it to 100 prints a month that equals 1000 prints ,after only owning the printer 2 months and only making 80 prints my printer is now out of ink , customer service was no help they said buy more ink or buy another printer , so don't expect to get a year worth of ink expect 80 prints

I finally got fed up after the last printer went through ink like crazy and it was impossible to find replacement ink unless i went online. I made the switch to Brother. I love this printer. It can handle so much more than I ever thought I needed. Im very happy with my purchase. The only thing I'm not happy about is that in order to download the drivers you need either a windows or mac operating system. Both of which I do not have. While it works without the download, you can not update the drivers or customize a page you want to print such as lightning up a dark print from what i gathered. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would NOT buy again I really wanted the monochrome laser, however most models were unavailable when I needed a new printer. I did thorough research and realized Brother was a fairly trusted brand. First, you need to buy a cord in order to install this printer, and also have it function from time to time when the wireless function decides to not work. It should be included in the box. Second, I only print black and white and have printed less than 100 pages, and have only had the printer for 1 month before it started printing blank pages. Come to find out, when you print black, it uses the color ink, and you need those full in order to print anything. So three new ink cartridges later for a hefty price, my printer works, and that's all about I can say. A terribly designed product, and the inkvestment name is joke.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Dumb Printer I have had several HP printers that worked perfectly for a small app I had that printed 5x5 inch envelopes for DVDs. Over time they died. So, I bought a new one from HP. Problem is that it only supports specific paper sizes. The old printers could be told they had 8.5x11 inch paper but you could insert what ever you wanted. The new printers actually check the size of paper and will not let you. The “Custom” size feature failed to work. I tried, and returned three different models oh HP and one model on Cannon. All failed. The Bother was the only model that allowed me to print my envelopes. It is fine to warn users that they may have the wrong sized paper, but it should not be a hard error.

I would be in mid print and the printer would kick an error. What seems to work is if you print directly from the brothers app on the computer. But if you’re in a hurry expect to wait for four minutes for one page to print.

Set-up was complicated because the cable outlet on the machine was hidden, and I didn't think that the illustration for its location was good. The machine is lightweight and slides around easily. It doesn't feel solid and substantial; it seems kind of "cheesy." Most importantly, it was far easier to use the Epson's window to make choices and get all my printing needs accomplished. This printer doesn't allow much choice.

Only ~10 greyscale pages have been printed in a few months and ZERO color pages have been printed. The color ink is now 3/4 full. This printer wastes TONS of color ink even if you do not use it. Even with 1/4 of the color ink gone the software still says it's going to print 700 pages. Yea, right. Don't waste your money.

My son-in-law picked this Brother printer out for me to purchase. It was reasonably priced and had options my other printer didn't have, such as the ability to scan physical documents to send to someone's email. I am currently in college and need papers or class syllabus' printed' It also holds so much more paper than my other printer. My other printer only held 20 pieces of paper at a time, needing to copy long documents was a challenge. With my Brother printer I do not need to worry about that anymore, it holds plenty of paper. I am completely satisfied.

Print quality is good, don't know about ink life, we'll see. Wakes up quickly from sleep mode, prints fairly fast. Have copied & scanned, both work pretty well. Again, much better than the HP but also about 40 bucks more expensive. If it lasts, it will be worth it.

Of course Brother gets around this issue by saying " up to year. " They might as well as said up to 6 months. I will use it until the ink runs out, then I will switch back to a Cannon.

This printer works like a charm: scans, copies and prints perfectly for home office use. It's only been a few months, but so far, I'm very satisfied. I highly recommend the MFC-J1205W series.

I was, however, VERY disappointed with the wifi setup. I followed all of the instructions, which took about 10 minutes, and the printer would still not connect to my router which was about 4 feet away. I finally had to use a usb cable to get it to connect. This is something that REALLY needs to be improved on! I didn't buy a wireless printer to be forced to use a usb cable to set it up!

Unfortunately, when it “goes to sleep” after a short period of not being used, it will not “wake up” when I try to print. It is necessary to shut it down and start it back up before it will accept a print job. Very inconvenient.

I would upgrade if I was printing more pages. Scan, FAX and copy functions are comparable to other, more expensive, printers I've owned.

The printer was easy to set up and easy to use and the Wi-Fi was easy to set up and use. I just follow the instructions and use the easy setup provided. I first set up the phone and then the laptop. I downloaded the software and drivers from the brother website and that was very easy to install also. It was also easy changes the utility software from the brother website 2 scan and copy material on the printer. Now I am able to print from my phone can my laptop. Overall I felt like the Wi-Fi was easy to set up and the printer overall is easy to set up including the software and the utilities that you have to download from the brothers website.

I have a number of Brother's products and have always found them to be reliable. The J1205w is no exception. I like the product and they have even included a year's supply of ink. The only thing I would change is that it would be a laser instead of a an inkject.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Printer Pretty good printer and does everything I need it too. Plugs in and just works. Couldn't ask for more, should last a while. One con, it's panel scan lid is a bit light in weight, so papers with harsh creases may need a weight on top of the lid.

Even wrote a review about it all on BBB because I could not contact company at all. Honestly, I was about ready to give up, when one day randomly the printer was online, setup, and working properly.I don't know... Possessed perhaps? LOL.

Scanning and printing functions work well - it can't do everything a fancier model might but if you don't need those features this is a very nice printer/scanner at a competitive price - and wireless if you want it to be.

I would like to start off by saying that I received this printer for free in exchange for a review, and that this was the fourth Brother printer I've used during my life. But this one is a definite no go for me... From opening the box to getting it all plugged in, setup, downloaded the app/program, and have the ink cartridges filled enough to print the test page: 43min! And that didn't even including connecting it to WiFi! That took another 20-30min and even then, was cumbersome to do. The directions have you download the driver/program to print for your computer and an App to print from your mobile device. This program/app is a different one from the Brother printer I already have! Shouldn't they all use the same app to make it easy for the user. Why have two separate Brother apps?! In the end, I could only get it to print a few times and got so frustrated at trying to get it to work properly that I eventually gave up. But my boyfriend was somehow able to make it print from his phone without the App from the instructions? I don't know what was going on with it... I also couldn't get it to scan properly. Overall, I would recommend skipping this one. Brother is a great brand and I definitely would recommend their products, but this one is a miss. Pick something that's more plug-and-play.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dont buy if you plan to use this wirelessly Print quality is good. I use it in wifi mode and when it is on for a while nothing seems to be able to connect to it anymore. After some turning on and off, unplugging, and a primal urge to punch the printer it will sometimes work again. For that reason it is worse than our previous printer.

I have owned many home printers and this one, so far, is the best. Could it be improved? Yes. The control buttons print is tiny and difficult to see. Printing two-sided is a bit complicated and could be made more user friendly. An on screen prompt would help. Instructions are poor or missing. These drawbacks can be lived with, however. Print quality is excellent both in B&W and color.

The printer is small and efficient for a small office or personal printing. It is not bulky and fits neatly under a desk. The printer output is slow for multipage or large quantity printing. However, the print quality is good compared to most inkjet printers. The dual side printing is cumbersome because you have to take the paper out and flip it over to print on the backside. The printer boasts that it comes with a years worth of ink. That is a huge plus. This printer would be excellent for a high school, college student, or small business that didn't require large print jobs.

When I asked for support they told me that I needed to alter my wifi configuration which meant having to ask my provider to come and do it for me, at my own expense..when I asked support to just send me a cable to connect it to my computer I was told that they did not provide that so I had to buy it at my own expense.. I would have returned it but I began using it late and the return period had expired. That’s the last Brother product for me, and I've had 4 before this one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An opportunity missed When you buy an item like this you're looking for functionality and the means to achieve a purpose. This is the first Brother Printer I've bought and thus far it has functioned as expected, but then I expect all new printers to do that, but I bought this purely because it advertised a year's worth of average printing without the need to purchase more ink. It remains to be seen whether this will indeed be the case. This purchase was a stop gap whilst I re-invigorated another printer I own and that is also in good health now. So why, you may ask, is this printer regarded purely as a stop gap and not as a machine to be relied on? And of course the answer is economics. The ink cartridges for this machine are so expensive as to make one's eyes water and the printer a liability once the ink runs out whereas my other printer will not exhaust my bank account simply to keep it squirting ink onto paper. I've no doubt that this Brother Printer will continue to perform well, but that's not good enough when there are alternatives available, it must continue to do this economically. This item is a budget item and I've no doubt that the profit accrues from the supply of ink cartridges, but the Brother bean counters have got it wrong, by pricing the cartridges at the level they have, they have assured me, as the customer, that none will ever be bought, so much so in fact, that I'll not be taking up Brother's limited offer on purchase of ink at a discount from their online store.. So 10/10 for functionality, but 1/10 for bean counter meanness and corporate greed. Would I buy another Brother Printer? Possibly, but Brother will need to decide what it is they are selling me before I do.

I taught myself how to open the back, front and top to vacuum it clear. The colours lasted the year and the black is still working. I am presently teaching myself to scan and send in my email.

The directions were more user-friendly for non-techies like me. I was able to reslve one minor problem with a call to a very helpful & patient customer service rep. I have also been satisfied with the ease of using the printer/copier and the quality of the copies. Just yesterday, for some reason, it would not make black & whte copies, but when I hooked it up today, apprarently it had healed itself. Go figure. I still wonder why it's so difficult to find a printer that will work off the wifi with a Chromebook.

He came over to install it, and then the printer functioned properly. I needed to wait 2 weeks for his availability to help as I am a senior, and am not technologically savvy.

It was easy to set up: loading paper, connecting the power cord, and installing four ink cartridges. Once the cartridges were installed, it took several minutes to print the check sheet, automatically. Connecting to Wi-Fi is not difficult at all, just download Brother Mobile Connect App and follow the on-scren instructions. It took only a few minutes and worked just fine. I test-printed several documents with regular copy paper, including four full-bleed images, one 4"x6" image and one color text document. The print quality was good! However, the only thing remains uncertain is indeed the page yield. It claimed that the printer can provide "uninterrupted printing for up to 1 year with in-box ink (approximately 100 pages per month)". I hope that's true!

You can't get the ink as advertised and each cartridge only lasts a few days and prints may a quarter of what is claimed. The cartridges are only filled about a quarter too and they tape over the top so you can't see how low the ink actually is. Also, they make it so you can't refill the cartridges yourself, making the product very unsustainable and un-environmentally friendly. Planned obsolescence at its finest.

I've maybe printed 25 pages of text and 32, 4x6 photos; ink levels are at half. This was with settings at fast or economy settings. But the price was good and ink refills are competitively priced with other brands.

Must be old ink that was in the box. 70.00 to buy more ink...support articles are poor on the brother website. I have two other Brother B&W laser printers that are from 2004, probably have a million pages each with minimal maintenance which is why I came to Brother for a color ink jet. My impression upon opening the box was disappointment at how flimsy it seemed. The fact that it didn’t work out of the box has me rethinking my choice. Returned.

I have not tried photo sized prints yet, but on 8x10 paper the picture was 90 to 95 % the same as my phone picture. I did have difficulty setting up my printer to my Samsung 10 with the Brother app, but I downloaded the Samsung printer plug in and it works great. I do not have Wi-Fi but have used my laptop with printer with a cable , I was relieved for this , I didn't have to send the printer back!

The title for this review mainly comes from the fact that I worked this printer over...Printed over 200 medical documents including just text documents to full color EKG AND ECG graphs for the SSA regarding my disability claim...didn't even put a dent in the ink levels...I would say maybe 2-3% of each ink used. Everyone knows with printers these days the ink cartridges are where they get you! All other functions were smooth, wireless setup is super super easy and printing from cell phones Iphone and Android (I tested both were smoothe flawless. The ink levels really blow my mind though...If you print more documents than Kinko's on Crack like myself...DO YOURSELF A HUGE FAVOR AND BUY THIS PRINTER!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid & Affordable printer for home use I had a Brother printer for 15 years before it finally decided to give up the ghost, so it was a no-brainer that we looked at more Brother printers to replace it. I didn't need anything fancy, just something that would be dependable and after some research this seemed to fit the bill. My husband set it up for me--it took maybe half an hour and it worked like a charm. We're able to print from both of our computers, along with our phones, with ease. I'd highly recommend it.

We tried a Canon printer because we liked their very large ink supply, but we just could not get it online. Then we thought, we have 3 different Brother machines that work well, so why look elsewhere.

So far we are delighted with it. The only glitch was in downloading the software - took us a little extra time to figure it out. Once we did, it was a snap!

Also, I do not understand what it means by "up to 1 year of ink in the box|" as it came with only partially filled cartridges that certainly won't last for a year.. However, these things aside, it prints very well and is quite fast and fairly quiet. It was very easy to set up and connect to my wifi for wireless printing. Print quality is good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Printer is fine, ink cartridges are not The color cartridges are tiny and there are no other options out there other than the standard yield. There is no aftermarket option and with Brother's chipped cartridges, even refills will not work as it just estimates how much ink it should have used and turns off the cartridges after it determines it should be out. There is not a way to override it saying it is out of ink - it simply stops printing until a new cartridge is installed. Most other printers you can override and say to print anyway even if it might suck if you are actually out of ink. This one just becomes a paperweight when Brother has decided it needs to bump revenue with additional ink sales.

However, that being said, you will likely never be able to print from your device. Constantly won't connect, even if on the same WIFI connection. No way to turn it online if it goes offline. Even unplugging and plugging it back in only works for a PC or laptop. I am extremely sorry that I purchased this product in order to save money instead of the product that was $100 more. On a positive note, I have yet to change or refill the cartridges, but I have owned it for less than 3 months.

That makes it almost useless. Is that not a minimum requirement of a printer/scanner/fax machine? I wish they had made that missing feature more prominent on their advertisement. I feel seriously scammed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a Fool am I... I wanted to get one of these tank printers because I heard how much more could be printed from one full tank. However, I failed to do the research that I always tend to do. I don't know why still, but anyway... Best Buy basically sells 4 major brands in the printer "big tank" department. Or whatever it's officially called. And NOW, I've discovered that all of the tank printers basically only have one size of refills. The Brother tank printers are the only one with cartridges. The other three big brands have bottle refills so that none of the ink is wasted. With the Brother refills, you get like 750 or 800 pages with this printer, and I think I saw a more expensive printer have refills that can produce something like 1,500 pages. It doesn't really matter how far off I am though, because the cheapest tank printers of the other 3 big brands, come with 2 years of ink because their refills produce in the neighborhood of 6,000 to 8,000 pages... So do your research folks. And I'm sorry Brother. I've always loved y'all. But I'm going to have to move on...

It had someone had written with a black marking pen, then removed it, but the sentence was still there so I returned it through Amazon for. a replacement. Once upon getting the replacement when I tried to or attempted to parrot with my wifi even with help of their support, it was not able to do that So Amazon told me to return it. for a refund.. I had such high hopes for the brother because of the fact it has such efficient. ink capacity. which most of the other units that are on the market are lack. Amazon told me because I had two in a row fail that they were going to rethink carrying brother and figure out why or what was wrong with the units. They told me I needed to return it. They gave me a full refund, which I took I'm still not sure whether I will proceed down the road to buy a brother again. It's a wonderful machine. If you could just pair it with your Wi-Fi.

The setup was easy and for the first time, we can print wirelessly using all of our devices including the iPad. My previous printer was a pain to do anything. I am so glad i went with Brother this time. I was looking for an exit strategy for endlessly purchasing print cartridges and this printer is it. I print more than average but i still have 600 potential pages left after 4 months of printing. ( moderate to heavy use at times )

In an effort to 'streamline' they created a printer with no hardwired connection ports and bluetooth capability only. The result is a printer that is chronically disconnected, needing an update, and unable to print. I cringe each time I need to print something as, invariably, the printer will have a problem connecting to a computer it has connected to several hundred times, require yet another update, or print a diagnostics report I didn't request. I would return it if possible. If legal, I would throw it into a river. It is a brick.

The paper tray guides are thin & I feel like they would break if adjusted too often. Don’t like the process for scanning doc’s; I think it should be a one button operation.

Also, the Wifi connection is not easy compared to previous printers I have had. Notwithstanding, I would recommend it for a home printer, lots of ink at purchase and a good warranty.

Liquid cartridges were simple to install and hopefully will last the year since I am a casual printer person. Setup was simple enough, just follow the instruction sheet. So far no issues and print quality is very good, and paper tray holds a lot, hope the long term ink supply comes to fruition.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I didn't ask enough questions ! purchased this printer without asking sufficient/right questions as I was in the middle of some work that I needed to get done. One of the least favorite issues is the on/off process which does not print when sent to it for another device ( phone, Ipad). Secondly, I have to manually turn the printer on when I want to print. Thirdly, the printer does not do back-to-back printing so I am wasting lots of paper ( in fairness, the clerk did mention the unit did not print back-to-back after I actually paid for it). Next is the size which is about 25% larger than my older, failing Brother printer, so it overlaps the small table and takes up too much room in my computer nook. On several occasions, I have 2 screens on the computer which print on top of each other so neither screen is readable due to overlap, even when I try to down scale the print size .It does print well for many tasks and I like the larger ink cartridges, but the other issues outweigh the benefits.

I've printed maybe 50 pages at most and all three of my colour tanks are almost empty and the black is down 50% even though most of those 50 pages were mostly all black & white documents. The replacement ink basically costs as much as this printer. This model is a true dud which is very unfortunate as I've always told everyone to get a brother printer their great, put skip this model as I \'m going to have to send it to the landfill with this excessive ink use

I called their customer service twice on two different occasions and had two different people tell me that this is by design to maintain print quality and speed. They can justify their obvious greed however they want. BE WARNED. Perhaps it was my own ignorance that lead to this predicament. The Brother people also informed me that if you are looking to print just black and white documents and endless coloring pages for your kids (like us), then a laser printer is what you want (not an ink jet). It occurred to me this may be an industry standard that I was not aware of.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good job performance I purchased this printer because I wanted something simple (don't need all the bells and whistles). It's been delivering good results so far. The set-up was easy: I downloaded the program online and onto my computer. Not using Wi-Fi so I have a cable that goes directly to my computer. Loading paper, working the different printing menus, etc was easy with no hassles. I haven't been using it long enough to comment on the ink levels and how much ink it goes through The copies made are a good quality as are the color photos. At the price it goes for, this is a good deal. As an aside, I bought a Brother word processor 22yrs. ago - it's still going! I would recommend this model for anyone who needs a good printer without breaking the budget.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No problems This is a good printer for the price point. Set up was relatively easy (direct connection to computer - have not tried any wireless capability). Print speed is better than my old printer and the related Brother app makes generation of PDF docs a breeze.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Came with empty ink and unable to set up First off the ink cartridges that came with the machine that are supposed to be a year’s worth of ink were empty except for the black that was half empty. I still tried to setup the machine and spent over an hour trying to connect to my phone to print and even after watching videos and anything I could find on the net I couldn’t get it set up. I’ll be taking it back.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Eh, not great but not the worst. Not a fast printer, about average speed. Good support for iOS but not great support for Windows. Zero drivers for Linux. Honestly a little overpriced for just another printer that doesn't work well with all platforms.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't install it on my wifi network. It didn't work out for me. I took it back. There was no mention on the outside of the box that a wired connection was required for scanning (no way I can do that in this house. I went ahead and tried to set it up, but couldn't work through the insanely complex process. I have had no problem with installing H-P and Epson printers although they gave me operating cost and reliability problems causing me to give this a try.

It uses different software tools to access it so the old control panel app isn't needed anymore. Print quality is great, what you'd expect from this class of ink-jet printer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pretty good printer so far. I had been looking for an ink tank style printer. I had one by another company that failed after 6 months only to find that the company considered it a non-repairable item, with it still half full of the original filling with ink. I am still not sure about the "Inkvestment" cartridge system as it seems like it's just larger cartridges and may be more expensive in ink use than a straight ink tank system, but it was less expensive than other printers in this range and I'd had good results from a previous Brother unit. Overall, it has given me good images and general printing, though it has had some software issues integrating with graphics software. I use it for doing some artwork where I scan images and then print them after doing work on them in an older version of Adobe Photoshop. It has had problems where it must be started manually at a button on the device instead of starting from beginning a print within other software, so it's not integrating perfectly. There is also an error message telling me there is a problem with the unit printing, which will show up every time I print from Photoshop, even if the printing actually happens before resolving the error message, which usually takes only a few seconds and only four message screens. Scanning and printing from the supplied Brother application seems to work fine, although it generally saves scans to a Brother scan folder and not to a folder of my choosing. While scanning you have to be careful of the document position, as with drawings you can lose up to 1/2" of the top/bottom of the document in portrait mode. When printing text documents, you will get a message on printing which seems to indicate that you could print double sided, which will pop up right after you have printed the entire document single sided. When printing my artwork, I get good color that is very much like what I see on my monitor. It handles a variety of paper, and I regularly use heavy card stock, though sometimes It is unable to detect paper in the tray and asks to have more paper installed even though there is ample paper loaded. It has not had a paper jam. This unit is noticeably smoother in operation to other units I've had and fairly quiet. It also prints more quickly than other products I've owned.
