Ink won’t last!!
I have 4 days with the printer and I already have to buy all three color pack. I got the printer for my kids to do online school and they didn’t print that much is that the printer doesn’t use black too much. On top of the the printer would not print on black if it’s out of color ink. They need to come out with stronger ink cartridges I rather a little more for it to last. AS OF RIGHT NOW I DONT RECOMMEND IT!!

Prints well but guzzles ink
I like the print quality, but this printer uses ink at an amazing rate. I don't do that much printing and I notice the difference from former Brother printers I've used. Add that it won't print in black if a color cartridge is low, and I would not recommend this printer.

Printing Photos?...may not be your best choice
So far I love the printer however the ink runs out quickly. I have bought the LC3013 (XL) cartridges for printing photos - I consistently get about 29 pages of 8.5"x11" only before the ink runs out. I know photos are more high quality finishes but I would have expected a higher yield count. If you print out photos this might not be the best printer for you. Otherwise, I have been happy with it.

Worst Gift Ever
Thank goodness I didn't spend my own money on this printer. Read the reviews - it is an ink guzzler and the ink is expensive to replace. I can't believe I didn't hang onto my old Canon to make sure I liked this printer, because I would totally be hooking it back up. I will very likely replace this as soon as possible.

I'm happy with it.
I have read all the bad reviews but I have been happy with it. It definitely tells you when each color needs replacing, and lasts a long time for me. Super easy to install - much easier than my old HP printer. Not sure why all the negative reviews.

Great printer for average household use
We use this for random documents and the occasional printout of my son's ipad artwork. It's a workhorse printer in that sense. Great quality. The ink isn't running out any faster than previous printers I've owned. Good product.

Great for high quality prints, not high quantity
I know there are a lot of poor reviews out there, but personally, I love my J497DW printer. I think it all depends on the use and understanding of the product.
I'm of the opinion that the primary feature of this printer is its quality of color (bright, opaque, non-streaking and its line crispness. As an artist and teacher, this is something I value highly. So I'm not using it as my 'workhorse' printer, in the sense that I'll print my larger-volume pages like notes and black-and-white handouts on a lower-quality printer, but I'll use this one when I need high-quality images and color, such as infographics and other items to laminate for long-term use. Moreover, it prints well on thicker or specialty papers, such as canvas, parchment, or certain pliable cardstocks.
In an artistic sense, this printer is fantastic. For those looking for something higher-volume and average quality, I suggest looking elsewhere.

Decent printer with flaws
This Brother printer is above average for print quality. I had to knock down the overall rating because of a couple of issues. The 'yellow' cartridge ran out significantly before the other ones. The single yellow replacement is out of stock for how long, I don't know, so I can't just buy that. Now I have to buy a 3 pack with cartridges I don't need. Most of my printing is in grayscale. Even though I have plenty of black ink, it won't allow me to print until I replace ALL the ink. Seems like a sleazy way to sell more juice.

worst printer I've ever owned
This printer is next to useless for much other than a boat anchor. Ink runs out way too fast. Replacement ink is expensive. The wireless connection is worse than terrible, I have to delete and add the printer on my laptop EVERYTIME I use it and what's worse is there is no way to connect to it other than the wireless connection. When even one ink catridge runs out the printer faults to an error mode and will no longer print even if it was a color cartridge that ran out and I only want to print in black and white it WILL NOT WORK. Very frustating to use and I would not recommend to anyone.

Poor features paper tray is flimsy and unreliable
Would not recommend this printer, they dont tell you if one cartridge is out, it wont PRINT AT ALL not even black. Ink does not last long and they have you over a hump to print

Best printer I've had in over 20 years!
I have bought countless printers over the years and they all crapped out super early. I have not had one single problem with this one.
Only drawback i find is it uses up the ink really fast. But i still wouldnt trade it for anything else.

Product could be better
You never get the same color as the color of the article , picture,graph or drawing you are making a copy of. This is very frustrating when the line is supposed to be green but is printed pink or yellow or not at all. Needs improvement.

Overall great printer but the ink cartridge is a genuine supply and physically the cartridge is full but the printer says it is empty compared with a known full one looked the same guzzles ink faster than my HP

Great printer
I love this printer. I have had no problems at all with it. The ink lasts like it says it does, the starter ink only lasts for 200 pages. It also works great in Grayscale, and then has been no gushing of ink. The only thing I could wish for is if the ink was a little cheaper. I write children's books and print them for my grandchildren.

Excellent Professional Quality
I love the printer and the quality of the ink. Yes it does go through ink, that is why I have a lower end Brother printer that does mainly black ink printing in higher volumes. The MGC-J497DW and its ink have produced higher quality printing than originals. I love the quality and ease in which if one color is out I can just put the one particular ink cartridge in. I love it.
