Product Reviews
Zebra G-Series GC420t - label printer - monochrome - direct thermal / therm is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 3.
Date published: 2016-02-03
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good direct-thermal, label printer While it has a couple smaller limitations and/or issues, overall everything the G-Series direct thermal printers are quite good at their jobs. If the thermal version of this model didn't smear as it prints the labels, we'd have those and I'd likely vote it 5 stars across the board. As such, the direct thermal is required in our warehouses. Which is unfortunate because the cost difference between thermal and direct-thermal is something that very literally *CANNOT* be ignored - even though they're nearly identical (thermal only doesn't have the 'clips' to hold the direct-thermal cardboard tape and waste spools by the looks of it) the price is $100++ different, even from the same vendor. (However MUCH KUDOS to CDW for immediately matching an alternate vendor for us and allowing us to continue using them versus going to a different seller!!!) We LOVE CDW! :-)Anywho - the GC420t works well, especially with the quasi-legacy software (Label View 8.5 and 9.0) we still need to use, and does so with minimal, but nonetheless present, bugs. (The issues occur during initial setup and/or when swapping one for another, whether the same exact model or an alternate, equivalent. (When changing out with an identical printer there should be no reason to do anything but move the cables and power it on - having to redo the drivers, redirect the type used when the label was initially created (again, even if it's the exact same model (i.e. a GC420t for a GC420t)!This part (installation and/or replacement / swap-out) can be tiresome...and time consuming if one is new to it. To be honest it's more likely that the hitch comes into play simply because it's been so long since the last time one needed to be replaced. And while that is NOT a flaw and speaks to their durability in spades, it also speaks just as much to the silliness that an exact, one for one swap of identical models should not require reinstalling, port direction, nor tricking it into thinking it's a different model. That said however, after the initial installation is complete there are few, if not exactly zero, problems with the 420s (other than their overly expensive nature). Aside from that however, give 'em a good cleaning on occasion and you truly cannot go wrong.Long story short - take care of them and they'll take care of you. Quite unlike 99% of ANY other printer on the market, across every technology.Sorry for being so long-winded - but hope this helps!!
