Product Reviews
Veeam Backup Essentials Standard for Hyper-V - license is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 102.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Being agentless minimized the install process for new servers. Valuable FeaturesBeing agentless minimized the install process for new servers. If you are using folder on your backup configuration, all the new servers has been backuped without any intervention on the backup server.Improvements to My OrganizationIt provides more efficiency to restore lost files that were deleted by users. It provides a restoring process for a complete server and replications on another site for the DRP servers.Room for ImprovementClient/agent for non-virtualized servers: This can be improved by integrating them in the same way as the virtual servers and integrating them into the same backup jobs. Actually, the Veeam team recommends making separate jobs for these servers. The options of the job are not the same if it’s a VM or a physical server. The best solution is to have the same functionality for a virtual or a physical server.I have already discussed this point with a member of the Veeam development and he replied to me that it will be improved in Version10. We are waiting ;-)Use of SolutionMore than 5 yearsDeployment IssuesNothing, the only problem encounter during installation is a Windows firewall problem but not linked directly to Veeam.Stability IssuesWe have not had stability issues.Scalability IssuesWe have not had scalability issues.Customer ServiceCustomer service is very reactive, you can open a call and be sure that's solved or helped on a 24h max.Technical SupportI would give technical support a rating of 10/10 for fast replies and solutions.Previous SolutionsWe were using Symantec Backup Exec. We switched for the simplicity of management with Veeam.Initial SetupThe initial setup was straightforward, but now our infrastructure is more complex. We started with five servers and now we have more than 150 servers protected by the Veeam solution.Pricing, Setup Cost and LicensingThe pricing and licensing are reasonable.Other Solutions ConsideredWe looked at Acronis, NetBackup, and Backup Exec.Other AdviceNo special advice, other than just follow the wizard and you can start faster than another solution.Disclaimer: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer:We are a dealer for Veeam products.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It is very simple and fast to power-on a replicated server, making it come online again Valuable FeaturesReplication (fast recovery for replicated servers).Improvements to My OrganizationIt has decreased downtime issues. By using replication, we decreased our downtime for crashed servers and having other service/system issues. It is very simple and fast to power-on a replicated server, making it come online again.Room for ImprovementI'm not sure if this option is available in new versions. But different types of licenses could not be used on the same Veeam server in the past, it would be good to be able to use mixed types of licenses in the same server.Use of SolutionAbout four years.Stability IssuesNo, it is working nice and smooth.Scalability IssuesNo, because we are using this product in a small environment.Technical SupportWe do not encounter many problems with the product, but we do get an instant response when needed.Previous SolutionsWe are still using a different product for backup. Veeam is being used for replication only.Initial SetupSince it was a single server setup, it was easy to install and configure.Pricing, Setup Cost and LicensingIt is acceptable for us because we having been using it for approximately four years. However, I think for new buyers/customers it may be cheaper than other products.Other Solutions ConsideredAnother product is being used for backup. We did a PoC with Veeam, then bought it.Other AdviceIt is easy, with many features, (I think) it is cheaper. Very useful for virtual environments.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from VM backup and ease of use are the most valuable features. Valuable Features:VM backup and ease of use are the most valuable features.Improvements to My Organization:It helps the discovery of the new VM. It allows me to use the same tools when we decided to move from VMware to Hyper-V.Room for Improvement:The physical system support needs improvement. I know that the latest version has this feature, but it was too late as I am already using it for three years. For the time being, I have used another backup software (EMC NetWorker) and they seem to catch up a lot during the past few years.Use of Solution:I have used this solution for three years.Stability Issues:Stability is good so far; hopefully, we will not have any problems.Previous Solutions:If one day the EMC NetWorker will offer same features, then I will have to switch as they offer more than what I want.Initial Setup:The setup looks simple, you set it up once and forget .Cost and Licensing Advice:If they can give more add-ons (such as training) for the pricing.Other Solutions Considered:We looked at EMC NetWorker and Veritas NetBackup.Other Advice:Keep it up.Disclaimer: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer:

Rated 4 out of 5 by from We can offer disaster recovery services for managed services customers. Valuable Features:* The object level restore from the Active Directory* Microsoft Exchange* Microsoft SQL* Backup and restore of vCloud Director Objects* Direct SAN integration with 3PARI like these features because they are helpful in offering additional and detailed disaster recovery services for managed services customers. The direct SAN backup feature perfectly integrates with our 3PAR storage infrastructure. It has significantly reduced the time it takes to backup virtual machines.Improvements to My Organization:This product has improved the entire RTO and allows us to restore applications and services to customers within a few minutes.Room for Improvement:The direct SAN backup integration can be perfected by improving the snapshot removal mechanism and process from the storage volumes. This will prevent stale snapshots from accumulating on the data stores, which in turn consumes precious space.Use of Solution:I have used this solution for seven years.Stability Issues:There were no stability issues that I can think of. When the best practices for deploying Veeam Backup and Replication are strictly followed, the system can be stable without any issues.Scalability Issues:We didn’t have any problems with scalability at all. It all comes down to how to deploy the Veeam infrastructure. If it is well designed, scaling is no problem.Technical Support:The technical support is fairly good.Previous Solutions:I have used other solutions in the past, but I switched because Veeam just works. It is pretty easy to set up, use, and it has fewer limitations.Initial Setup:The setup is straightforward, depending on how you want to deploy it. The installer can configure everything for you on the same server with all the relevant databases. It will also automatically install any required external software needed for Veeam to operate.Cost and Licensing Advice:The licensing is based on the number of cores you have in your ESX or Hyper-V environment. That should be taken into consideration when purchasing the Veeam Backup and Replication solution.Other Solutions Considered:I have used TSM, Backup Exec, and Retrospect.Other Advice:I would recommend IT professionals who run their infrastructure in a predominantly virtual environment to go for the Veeam Backup and Replication solution. It does the job and it is relatively easy to set up.Disclaimer: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer:We are a Veeam partner.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The SQL table-level restore helps the customer to restore a single table instead of the entire database. Valuable Features:There are many features that include the SQL table-level restore, Instant VM Recovery, and SureBackup, which are valuable to us.* SQL table-level restore: It helps the customer to restore a single table instead of the entire database which reduces the backup window dramatically.* Instant VM Recovery: It helps in case of a VM crash down.* SureBackup: You are assured that your backup is recoverable.Improvements to My Organization:We are a MSP and we deliver the best solutions to our customers.Veeam was one of the key products available for the virtualized environment.Room for Improvement:They have to expand their operations for the physical environment.Use of Solution:I have used this solution for two years.Stability Issues:There were no stability issues. If VMware works fine, then you wont face any issues with Veeam.Technical Support:Since they don’t have any technical support center in India, I would like to rate it a 5 out of 10.Previous Solutions:As I have mentioned earlier, we are a MSP and we design solutions according to the customer's needs.Cost and Licensing Advice:Pricing is reasonable and the product is worth investing in.Other Solutions Considered:We were evaluating Arcserve for the virtual environment. However, Veaam has better adaptability towards the virtual environment.Other Advice:VMware = Veeam is the best backup and replication solution.Microsoft Hyper-V = Veeam is the best backup and replication solution.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The ability to offload backup snapshots to the SAN helps with reducing the backup durations. Valuable Features:The greatest benefit of this software is its reliability. The ability to offload backup snapshots to the SAN helps with reducing the backup durations. The ability to turn on each VM for verification that the backup is reliable is another great feature. Recovery of a VM often takes longer for the tech to respond than the software to complete its recovery and power on speaks to the recover speed. The changed block tracking feature is one that enables us to choose which systems need a frequent (i.e., 5 min) incremental.Improvements to My Organization:There’s not much a backup software can do to the organization but its features enable us to have an inexpensive data recovery solution that ultimately plays a factor when choosing to move applications and services to the cloud.Room for Improvement:They need to address the confusing recovery dialogue.Use of Solution:I have used this product for about eight years across two organizations. At that time, it was version 3 I believe.Stability Issues:In earlier versions, there were some stability issues, but nothing in recent years that I can recall.Scalability Issues:We have not had scalability issues and I don’t see how this couldn’t scale to a much larger environment than the one I’m responsible for.Technical Support:The support staff are very knowledgeable to what I remember. We don’t really utilize them much, but a couple years back when we had storage issues, Veeam was very helpful.Previous Solutions:I’ve used traditional backup software that was based on tape and their move to VM backups still used this model. I always tried to pigeon hole backups to disk into tape containers which too frequently resulted in problems. Other VM backups earlier on didn’t improve at the same rate as Veeam.Initial Setup:Setup has always been simple. You add your host, a connection to a backup location and in a few clicks you’ve initiated your first backup. I’m simplifying it but if you compare it to most others, the setup takes a fraction of the time.Cost and Licensing Advice:If you have Exchange, Oracle, SQL, or a supported SAN, then I suggest getting at least an Enterprise edition. It’ll pay for itself in no time.Other Solutions Considered:We looked at Veritas NetBackup, ArcServe, Veritas Backup Exec, CommVault, and one other that has since gone out of business. The name eludes me.Other Advice:I suggest that you have another set of backups than just a deduping appliance that replicates offsite. This ‘second’ backup should be stored in a secure manner considering the news of backups being taken hostage by ransomware.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It is integrated with HPE storage solutions and it supports VM recovery. Valuable Features:It’s very simple to implement and use. It is agentless. It is integrated with HPE storage solutions (SAN and a deduplicated repository) and it supports instant VM recovery.Improvements to My Organization:We have significantly improved the restore process of single items, like an Exchange Mailbox with a very simple wizard-driven process.Room for Improvement:It requires a Windows Server, but it would be a good idea to have an appliance with no Microsoft license required. As of now, there’s no chance to backup NAS shares (CIFS/NFS).Use of Solution:I have known and used Veeam Backup and Replication from v6 in 2011.Stability Issues:There were no stability issues in my experience.Scalability Issues:There were some issues with repository scalability in legacy versions.Technical Support:The technical support team is professional and competent. I would give technical support a rating of 9/10.Previous Solutions:We used Symantec Backup Exec and CA Arcserve. We changed because there was a lack of features specific for a virtualization environment. Arcserve has a complex way to backup Exchange.Cost and Licensing Advice:The price is adequate for the quality of the product. There are several editions/licenses that start from basic functionality (Standard Edition) to the edition that includes maximum integration (Enterprise Plus). I would recommend considering at least the Enterprise Edition.Other Solutions Considered:We try to use both Symantec Backup Exec and CA Arcserve.Other Advice:Only consider the Availability Suite if you need to monitor your virtual environment within backup processes and you have nothing implemented on it.Disclaimer: My company has a business relationship with this vendor other than being a customer:My company is a Reseller Silver Partner and Cloud Provider Silver partner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It allows VM replication from one data center to another for DR. Valuable Features:Instant restore, file level restore, backup, copy/restore to/from cloud, VM replication from one data center to another for DR.Improvements to My Organization:Fast recovery, backup stored in 3 locations: locally, other location, and in the cloud (iLand). If our primary data center goes down, our VMs are replicated to another data center so we will be up and running in less than 15 minutes.Backup stored in multiple locations.Room for Improvement:The product works perfectly for us. After they added endpoint backup for physical servers the product is 10/10.Use of Solution:4 yearsDeployment Issues:Not at all, and we have a few Veeam servers in different locations.Stability Issues:No, just make sure you not run out of space, that's all.Scalability Issues:No.Technical Support:10, great customer service.Previous Solutions:ArcServe, Symantec. I had always problems with the backup until I switched to Veeam.First, it's agentless for your VMware or Hyper-V VMs, but you need to install an agent if you want to backup physical servers. Second, the backup just works and I get alerts when a backup fails. But the only time when the backup fails is when I run out of space.I don't need to worry about testing the backups because with SureBackup, Veeam is restoring the backup automatically and is checking if the restore works.Brilliant.Initial Setup:Very simple-- just download the product and go through the wizard.Implementation Team:In-house.Cost and Licensing Advice:Maybe Veeam is not the cheapest product, but it is the best backup solution I have ever used. If you want to sleep at the night, don't worry about your data , spend a few more $$ on the Veeam solution, and I guarantee you will love it.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.
