Product Reviews
Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager Client ML - license & softw is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from This is great for inventory and does a good job at patch management but is very complex and requires some help to get it tweaked to optimum levels.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Only been running this for the past four or so months, but very impressed with both the speed at which it takes a backup and the ease of getting to most used functions. This is a vast improvement on BackupExec 11D which we were previously running!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from DPM is a very solid tool that we have been using for almost a year now. If there is any complaint, it is that it will not backup non-Microsoft storage. We have several Linux-based NAS devices that it won't even consider as candidates for backing up!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The days of tape being a primary backup and dwindling away. Disk to Disk backup and Disk to disk replication are the most effective method to meet the high demands of todays Business Continuity Plans. Many companies are now in business 24 hours and cannot wait 2 hours for a tape restore or the headache of cataloging tapes at an offsite location. Microsoft has centralized many of the Systems Admin products that you use to manage your environment. the result is Microsoft System Center. The components that can be incorporated are Configuration Manager (Formerly SMS) Operations Manager (Formerly MOM), Virtual Machine Manger (Manges HyperV and ESX virtual Machines) and Data Protection Manager.Currently with version 2007 SP1 of DPM, it is possible to backup any Microsoft product. This includes basic file storage (server 2003+), SQL Databases (2000+), Exchange (2003/2007), Sharepoint Services and portal server, and HyperV live VM's. The backup methodology is inline with most common snapshot technologies today. A full backup is complimented by bit level differential files at intervals specified by the Administrator. For example, if a full backup check is ran at 6am every morning (Consuming no more space than the difference between the very first full and changes since) and recovery points are set for evry hour, changes can be restored instantly from disk for any recovery point. This even applies to running live Virtual Machines. Deltas are backed up after the initial image capture. This product has some room for improvement in tape management as well as custom recovery schedules and some other features that more mature products offer. Nevertheless, DPM makes up for any lack of features in performance and reliability as well as the return to the business. A DPM server can replicate to other offsite DPM servers for Disaster recovery/Business Continuity and again, once built deltas are the only concern. there are some bandwitdh metring capabilites and typically BITS is utillized to avoid excessive network contention.DPM is definately a product you need to evaluate immediately. Microsoft offers VM appliances that can be downloaded and ran with little configuration and setup.Thanks-murph
