Designed to satisfy the discriminating needs of sports and wildlife photographers, the EF 200-400 mm f/4L IS USM extender 1.4x is a high-performance super telephoto zoom lens with an optically matched built-in 1.4x extender for maximum versatility. With a simple flick of a switch, the zoom range can be quickly increased to 280-560 mm (f/5.6). This capability is extremely useful in applications where it is not possible to change lenses quickly, while also protecting delicate equipment such as a digital SLR camera's image sensor in environments with dust and high humidity. The EF 200-400 mm f/4L IS USM extender 1.4x incorporates one fluorite and four UD lens elements, which provide excellent correction of chromatic aberration throughout the entire zoom range for professional quality images with high resolution, contrast and color fidelity, while a 9-blade circular aperture helps deliver beautiful, soft backgrounds. It utilizes inner focusing, ring USM, a high-speed CPU and optimized AF algorithms for fast and accurate autofocusing. And, with power focus mode, focus shifts are quiet and smooth, which is essential for filmmaking. Image stabilization is effective up to four shutter speed steps, with three image stabilization modes providing excellent results for a wide range of subjects. Optimized lens placement and coatings deliver outstanding color balance, while helping to minimize ghosting and flare. The lens is highly resistant to dust and water, enabling shooting even in harsh conditions. A fluorine coating on front and rear lens surfaces repels dust particles and makes the lens easier to clean.

Product Reviews
Rated 4.9 out of 5 by 45reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very Impressive! I finally got to put this lens through it's paces on a vacation in Costa Rica. The images are outstanding on my 70D. I was extremely happy with the images from EF-S 55-250 STM, but is "L" lens took my photos to another level. I never looked at a photo from corner to corner .. but wow, now I get it. The focus is instant the images are extremely sharp, bright, colorful and simply stunning. I'm becoming more in tune with my photo's and since I shoot mostly family stuff and outdoors this lens is perfect. It's larger than my other telephoto and I lose some reach, but I could not be happier. I put some raw images into lightroom for post processing .. found very little to do .. My plan is to move to full frame when Canon finally updates the 6D but for now .. this is great on the 70D. I must admit I'm truly amazed, !! August 16, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by All the 5 ratings are justified My first and only L lens, this zoom exceeds my expectations, amazingly sharp at all apertures. It fits into my smallish camera bag, and is rather light. Minor distortion at the extreme ends is easily dealt with in processing software. Unless you have an EG-D screen with lines (5D and 6D SLRs), or call up the "level" in Live View, frame a little large, so that you don't lose image area cropping after straightening your horizon. Rated 5 out of 5 by My Favorite and Most Reliable Lens I have had 70-200L lenses for the past 8 years starting with a f4L non-IS. Around 2 years ago I upgraded to the f4L IS version. I was highly impressed with the colors and sharpness on my original 70-200 but my IS copy makes those look dull and soft. The IS, despite being one of Canon's older IS technologies, does make a difference. As for the sharpness, it really can't be beat. My 70-200 is perfect proof as to why this range lens is regarded as one of Canon's best L zoom lenses on the market. I have found it to be sharpest between f/7.1-9, but have had no issues with the sharpness even when being used wide open at that f/4.I personally recommend this lens to anyone and everyone. If you don't have a 70-200 L in your gear bag, you really are missing out. November 12, 2015
Rated 2 out of 5 by No working for me Hard to take a good shot with this lens. I keep reading reviews saying "crisp" and clear with great color saturation, yet I find just the opposite. Severe focus issues, poor color and overall cheap looking shots,Ironically, I switch back to the inexpensive 75-300mm that came with my camera (T3i) and I'm back to outstanding pictures. Very frustrating. Thought maybe it was my imagination, but this was my second half day shoot that produced suboptimal shots.Really want to like this lens. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Have a lemon? August 2, 2015
Rated 4 out of 5 by Perfect images This lens produces amazing images on my 70D, detail and clarity is just awsome. The IS still leves me wanting a better performance so as the auto focus. January 30, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great portrait lens We used this lens for the first time yesterday in a beach photo shoot. The images are stunning...crisp and vivid. The image stabilization works very well. We chose this over the more expensive 70-200 lenses because we shoot almost exclusively outdoors in sunlight and this lens appears to be perfect for this. The build quality is fantastic so it should provide great results for our clients for years to come! December 12, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Simply superior! Others have probably summed this lens up pretty well, but I LOVE THIS LENS! I have been using Canon SLR's since the late 1970's and have always been a big fan. I made the switch to digital in 2011 and have the 7D and 5D Mark 3. Both are super cameras and each lens I have is like having two when you consider the 1.6 crop factor of the 7D. I also have and love the 1.4x extender. On the 7D you now have a 480mm equivalent! Great for sports! I was strictly a prime lens guy for most all the years I have been shooting. I loved my Canon 200mm f2.8 lens! With this lens, I am now a huge zoom fan. This lens is just a super compact size and very light weight. Personally, I would choose it over the 2.8 model unless I really needed the speed or really shallow DOF. It is tack sharp and super easy to use. I love how the lens does not extend when you zoom. Always the same size and about half the weight and price of the 2.8 model. Aside from the excellent quality, what I like most is the size and weight. I can get this and my 24-70 f4 easily into a small bag and this is my go to run and gun package. I have several primes, but find myself not using them at all with these two excellent lenses. Buy one! You will love it! July 6, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Made the right choice! Debated long and hard on this vs the 2.8 non-IS since they are very close in price. I opted for the f4 because I didn't want to lug around a monopod and the f4 is proven sharper. The 4 extra stops of shutter speed is real and more than makes up for the slower glass. Hands down winner! June 18, 2014
