Know your gear

The majority of all surge-induced damage is caused by surges and spikes traveling along unprotected data lines. These surges originate from a wide variety of sources, including static charge buildup and lightning strikes. Left unprotected, your data lines expose network cards, A/V components, modems and other network equipment to damaging electrical transients. The ProtectNet family of stand-alone surge suppressors protects individual data lines, including telephone and network lines, coax cables, and more. Inserting a ProtectNet in your data line and connecting it to earth ground prevents back-door surges from ruining your productivity and costing you money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from awesome - love Surprised how big this is 3.25 x 2 x 1 inches. It even came with a 6 inch Ethernet cable! Would loved to be able to tell whether it's gone bad, like a green light. I was not sure about landing the green wire on the plastic outlet cover. If this would give me a good ground connection or not. So I took a spare 3 prong appliance cord 10 gauge and cut the female end off. Then I solder the two green (grounded) wires together. The other two I just taped up, now I can just plug it into a grounded outlet. This is an update, on 7/21 had a major lightning hit near by damaged my a/c unit. No problems with magic jack, router, or printer

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Do not buy this product June 28, 2016. Lightening storms throughout NE Alabama. Lightening came in on Internet, through this device and knocked out the router, 3 Levitron Gigabit switches, 3 desktop computers, 2 Tivo devices, a $3,000+ radio transceiver and tuner. ALL were connected to the Intranet back to the switches and router that was connected to the Internet through this device. It was a costly failure. Do not buy this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Standalone Ethernet Protection - So far so good! We get a lot of storms in my part of the country and we've had both a router and range extender ruined due to the storms. To be honest it felt a little weird to have this curly device attached to the equipment but we haven't had any issues so far. I'd say this is doing its job and would be a good purchase for anyone!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ProtectNet surge protector saved a school After losing a PC motherboard and switch after a storm, we installed PNET1GB’s on each end of the cable. Shielded cable's shield was not utilized before. I had earth rods installed on both buildings, tied that earth to the PNET1GB’s earth, ethernet’s drain wire and a metal faceplate with a shielded CAT6 insert. Never lost a piece of equipment since.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I strongly urge people to NOT use these I had this in our corporate office, on the uplink between our router and modem. One day, POOF, internet went down. everything was fine to the router, but we had Cisco replace it anyway. Still no data. The version of the device we had at the time had a visual indicator to let us know if the connection was tripped due to a surge. In this case, no such indication was given... it was solid green. So I'm thinking "nothing wrong with this", because... you know... I trusted APC's quality. after hours and hours of downtime, totaling 2 days, on a whim I disconnected this device and went straight into the router... and POOF, data connection to the office came back up. When one buys this kind of equipment, you have to trust that not only will it block a surge, but you also have to trust that it's really functioning if it says it should be functioning. In this case, I will never again trust that that is the case with this piece of equipment, and one of these will never see another nano-bit of data pass thru it on our network
