Great sound and noise canceling!
I have other brand bone conduction headphones for listening to podcasts and other media with just voice. However, I needed headphones with better sound for music and also excellent noise canceling. The WH1000XM5B headphones provide both superb audio quality as well as "best in the market" noise canceling. The noise canceling feature also allows amplified passthru of the ambient sound with a press of a button (or temporarily simply by placing a hand over the right earphone). The passthru appears to be accomplished by using microphones in both earphones to pick up the sound from each side, amplify it, and supply it to the headphones. This stereophonic design also provides the ability to hear from which direction the sound is coming from.

Excellent All Around Performance
The WH1000XM5B headphones have high quality sound, excellent noise cancelling capability, and long battery life. The ability to switch between wired and Bluetooth use is great for gaming with a PS5 and PSVR2 headset. Overall a very versatile headphone that performs well in a variety of uses.

Full featured with excellent noise cancelation
I've used these for 3 months now almost every day, and I couldn't be happier. First. the noise cancellation is excellent. The sound fidelity is superb. These are full of useful features, or if you don't like too many features and want them to be simple, you can turn those features off. 1) Has a touch pad on the ear that makes is so simply to swipe my finger forward or backward to skip songs, or swipe up or down to adjust the volume. If you inadvertently hit the touch pad with your hand, you will usually accidentally tap it only once, and one tap is a non-operational tap sequence so all it does does is beep. 2) Has a speak to chat feature. If you start speaking, the sound will mute (or pause, I can't remember which). You can adjust the sensitivity in the app on your phone. The app, by the way, is excellent. Someone finally made a decent configuration app. 3) If you want to immediately hear something, like an announcement on a train, just hold your palm against the right earpiece/touchpad. Let go when you're ready to go into your silent cocoon and listen to music again. 4) Adjust equalization with a separate bass boost function. This works very well, and it doesn't seem to noticeably affect battery life. In fact, with all of these features, I'd expect the battery life to be poor, but it's not. They're rated at 30 hours, and I'm getting at least 20, and probably more like 25 hours. 5) One of the settings allows ambient noise to come in so you can hear your surroundings. There are two settings available for how much ambient noise can come in. This is for when you might be walking or running in a busy environment and need to have some awareness of your surroundings. The headphones will detect if you're sitting still (activates full noise cancelling), walking (activates letting in a low level of ambient noise), running (activates higher level of ambient noise), riding transit (full noise cancellation). You can turn off the automatic switching if you don't like it. You do this in the app. 6) Alternatively, based on location, it will adjust it's mode of how much ambient noise it lets in. You specify the location (it uses your phones location system and a map), or it will suggest locations for those that you frequently go to. This feature I think drained my phone battery very fast. After I turned off location detection, my phone battery use was normal again. I can't believe how much engineering went into these phones and how much time was spent making that companion app actually useful and highly functional. Sony rocked it on these headphones. I can't imagine there's a better pair out there. I chose these over Bose, and I'm gladd I did, although I don't have Bose, so I can't compare them. These were rated as having better noise cancelling technology (they kept out more noise than Bose) according to the study I read and graphs I viewed. You won't get the features in the Bose headphones, but you'll no doubt like those as well. If you want features, these are the headphones for you. Oh, yes. All of that effort you put into configuring the app? Guess what? You can set it to automatically back up your settings to Sony. I used an existing account I had with Sony that I set up for my Blue-ray player years ago.

Warning - Stopped working after 8 months
These headphones were great, right until they suddenly stopped working. One day it was fine, and the next day when I turned it on, there was no sound on the right side. Factory resetting and connecting to different devices didn't help, nor did charging the headphones again or using it in wired mode. This is very disappointing for such an expensive product.

Right earphone cracked - not covered by warranty
I bought this product less than 6 months ago. I took it off to put on my nightstand, then when I picked it up, the right headphone where it connect to the slider cracked and is dangling. Now the right headphone doesn't even press against my ear. Also a wire is exposed. I contacted Sony customer support, and then told me that was 'physical damage' and not covered by warranty.

Wow !
What a short review title, but that really says it all.
It was between Sony and another competitor, and I’m very happy I listened to my friend’s opinions as opposed to some online PAID reviewers.
I DO NOT get paid or any type of compensation, so this is honest and unbiased.
Been doing a lot of air travel lately, and these really make those 8+ hour flights zoom by, and when not enjoying my music the noise cancellation is JUST that.
Not sound-dampening, but “how did I get the screaming baby behind me so I’m gonna take a nap now” Noise Cancellation !!
So well worth the money - why didn’t I do this sooner ?
Thank You

Causes Headaches
I purchased these headphones a couple of months ago on my way home from vacation. I was so excited to have a pair of high quality headphones to listen to my favorite music for long periods of time during reading or drawing. However, I can't wear this headphones for more than 30 minutes with it causes intense pain on the top of my head from the VERY narrow headband. I've tried moving it or even adding padding, and it doesn't help.

I am a retired live sound reinforcement engineer. These are the best sounding headphones I have ever owned. They are extremely comfortable and have notable features. You can customize your own EQ setting. The noise cancelling feature is outstanding. Swipe up or down for volume, skip tracks, pause, bass boost and the list go on. Battery life is extraordinary! I cannot think of anything that I dislike about them. I use them when I do my yardwork. I cannot hear any of my lawn tools. Lawn mower or weedeater. I look forward to doing my lawn work. LOL

Excellent headphones and features
I bought this about three months ago, and let me tell you, this is excellent. You can also change the noise characteristics, and it is very good. To let you know, I work in an injection, mold shop. For those of you who don’t know what this is, imagine being constantly doing with Measurements over 90 dB. This is the sustained, through eight hours, a day or more. So, you have to have the best in this varmint. If you don’t, you can literally get deaf.

Actually cancels noise
I don’t even have to turn the headphones on for them to cancel sound so sometimes I just wear them without sound. My hearing has changed due to ptsd from head injuries and these are the first headphones I’ve found that block out the one sound that gives me anxiety. I can finally relax after 5 years. I’m super happy with these headphones. I tried them because of a review on Amazon

Game Changer!
I upgraded from XM2 to XM5, what an improvement. Since the noise cancelation is so amazing, I actually like to hear music and audio books at a lower volume. I love doing yard work with it, especially during mowing my lawn or using my electric power tools.
When on the phone, the other side doesn't know I am mowing my lawn.

Noise dampening could be better
While most things are better than the gen1 of this headset, there are 2 areas that are frustrating.
1) I hear more sounds. The noise canceling for what I hear is not nearly as good as my old gen 1
2) small sounds, like clearing my throat, or taliing, will cause a beep in the headphones, and a loss of sound coming in, until I press a button. This is inconsistent. Sometimes it happens, sometimes not.
With that being said, the main reason of getting these was the improvments in noise canceling that OTHERS heard when on calls. This was VASTLY improved, and the main reason for 4 stars.

Excellent noise cancellation
These headphones have enabled me to do household tasks and be on calls without the other person complaining of the noises. Before this I often had to stop doing such tasks due to complaints of disturbances.
The main reason for this being rated 4 and not 5 is because it is not comfortable to wear continuously for over 2 hours. I am able to wear my Sony WHCH700N for up to 5 hours comfortably and expected the same with these new ones too.

Build Quality Issue Not Covered By Warranty
I have been using BOSE headphones for about a decade now, but decided to try the Sony brand to switch things up and see what else was out there. I bought the WH-1000XM5 headphones in March 2023. Within 2 months, the seam on the bridge of the headphones ripped right at the very end. Now, the underlying cushion is pushing out, and as times goes buy the issue will only get worse. I called Sony customer support to resolve the issue, but was told that it was a "cosmetic" issue and not covered by the warranty. I was not rough with the headphones, nor was there any trauma to the headphones, which I explained to the Sony representative. Now I am stuck with a ticking time bomb that currently looks unsightly, and eventually will rip the entire cushion off the bridge of the headphones. I would certainly not recommend these headphones, and will likely never buy a Sony headphone again. I payed over 400 dollars for these headphones, and Sony won't even own up to a design/production issue. Looks like it is back to the BOSE all metal headphones. I would post a picture, but the Sony website is not letting me.

Great Headphones but get the the MX4
I bought these for in December and they broke after 4 months. The band has a weak spot above the ear muffs and breaks apart. I purchased the protection plus plan from Sony, which states that it covers accidents and manufacturers defects. These broke easily and it will be hard to proved it wasn't an accident. It appears to be a design flaw, so thank goodness I bought the Sony Protection Plus Plan

Amazing Headphones
I needed sound proof headphones for work and I’m glad I bit the bullet and chose Sony. The sound is incredible, the fit is comfortable, the battery life is perfect, and the easy access functions are a dream. I only have one complaint: my greasy fingers leave marks all over the headpiece. I realize I’m a fan of hand creams and soft skin, but I am a bit disappointed how easily my fingers leave grease marks. The design of the headphones are beautiful too, wouldn’t change a thing except maybe the material it’s made from. Something I’ll consider next time

Long-lasting, good noise-cancelling
Battery: I wear my headphones the whole day (5-10 hours) listening to music and attending Zoom calls. These headphones last anywhere from 2-4 days depending on the use, and they charge really fast (one time, 50% in 30 minutes).
Sound: They sound great! Sometimes when Discord (which means this might be a problem with Discord) uses the headphone as input at the same time as output, everything sounds terrible. However, when I use my actual separate mic, the issue is fixed immediately.
Mic: do not use so I don't know
Hand motions: Very easy to use and handy, especially on mobile
Noise cancelling: The noise cancelling is so good I don't hear when people open my office door that is about 10 feet away from me. I wore them on the plane the other day and they worked great. The only problem is when the headphones don't completely cover your ears, the noise cancelling effect is useless on the plane. This presents a problem when I'm chewing, for example, because every time my jaw opens it creates a little space between ear and headphone. This is only a problem on the plane; otherwise chewing does not noticeably affect noise cancelling. Overall, I am very happy with the noise cancelling. These are my first noise-cancelling headphones, though, so I don't have much to compare them to.
Connection: Once paired, these headphones connect to my computer within 5 seconds of turning both devices on. Usually I use them while I'm sitting right in front of my computer, and I very rarely have problems with songs "buffering" or cutting out for a split second. Being further away, (15-50 feet is the range I've tried) this buffering is more common, sometimes happening more than every 10 seconds, but sometimes not happening at all.

You have to turn off all of the optional features in the hopes they will work (automatic pausing when headset is removed, touch sensor control, etc.). Headset will still pause music anywhere from 1-20 times in a 30 minute walk outside. My $30 headset from Amazon work better. 100% buyer’s remorse.

Great sound, God tier ANC
Bought these off Amazon looking for the best headphones with ANC and stumbled on these WH-1000XM5 headphones and ordered them. They have been working phenomenally until just recently when suddenly the right side started to cut out and sound was distorted. I tried resetting it several times but I still have the same issue. I haven't contacted Sony directly just yet because I'm hoping the issue will be resolved without having to deal with support but I may just have to call them and have them either repair or replace them. Other than that issue these headphones have been great from the solid build quality although I wish it had more metal parts, the sound quality is great with solid bass and clarity and God tier active noise cancelation plus ambient mode is great when someone in the room is talking to me while I'm listening to music. I highly recommend these if you have the money and hope you don't have the same issues.

Great headphones but not perfect yet
I had these headphone for about 1 month now. Travelled by plane, did some yard work, listen to movies and used the to do chores around the house. The sound quality is pretty good and with the app, you can customize the sound level. The automatic digital equalizer does a good job to find the proper equilibrium for your ear. I wish, however, that there could be different sound settings for different application (like a receiver) so that for certain movies you could accentuate the voice to be clearer while other event, you could want more bass, etc.. Maybe with what the headphones are paired with, you could make the different automatic settings or have functions, on your headphones to change settings. The battery life seems to last a good amount of time. When you put on the headphone, a voice telling you how much % battery life could be a nice touch (or at least be optional on the app). The noise cancellation is really good in most settings. However, i did not notice that, when using my lawn more, it didn't do a good job in the noise cancellation. I was surprised by this since it is a steady sound that I would have believe the opposite sine wave could have been generated to cancel this noise, but that wasn't the case. The weed wacker had a better outcome by cancelling the sound most of the time. if I moved my head a bit, the headphone had to adjust, but it did the job. However, the lawn more, I didn't have any luck with it. The airplane was great pure quietness. One more thing. I believe that there should be more padding on the top of the headphone. During the first few times, I could feel the presence of the headphone. After a while you get used to it and it doesn't bother you anymore. But, at first, it did bother me. I believe that if it had more cushioning or a " GEL" type of cushion, it might be better.

Yes, but I value my hearing above a cheap knockoff.

Sonys headphones
I thought I was nuts for spending so much money on headphones I was so close to returning them. They are worth every penny. They’re absolutely incredible headphones. The sound is incredible. With the Sony app you can fine tune the sound the way you like it. You just float away listening to the music.

Expected to have better noise cancellation
The noise cancellation was not upto the expectation but sound quality was spot on. Really love the sound quality of sony products. If you really are a music enthusiast, the sound quality will elevate your experience. Can't say the same about any other products on the market. And the Bass boost is something that you should try on these sony and it speaks for itself. And they're comfortable. I hope they get cheaper so more people can try it out.

Great Headphones, But Hurt My Ears Helixes Badly
Absolutely the best quality headphones I ever tried if not for the fact I cannot use them of more than a couple hours at a time. The helix pain becomes unbearable. Called support, they stated no solution from Sony is available. Bought a third-party earopads replacements, but still struggling with the replacement process.

The 2 versions before were better
Ok. I love this brand and usually these headphones, that's why I spend so much on them. This new version, I felt like they were so good for so long that they tried to give you everything but the kitchen sink in this pair.
The noise canceling is horrendous because I can walk by someone talking and they'll automatically stop. God help you if you attempt to cut grass or vacuum with them on. Even the adjustment in the app didn't help

Poorly Made
I purchased the headphone and it worked decently but it seems to be poorly made and one of the side starting chipping out for no reason and I am not even a heavy user. The only reasonable explanation could highly likely the poor manufacturing process and materials.

Sound canceling is the worst
For context: I've owned the SONY WH-1000XM2, WH-1000XM3 and WH-1000XM4. I also own a pair from a competing brand with a wire bought 7 years ago and it still works perfectly. Therefore, I know a good noise canceling system when I hear it. Nowadays, while the XM2 and XM3 are gone, I use one pair at home (XM4) and one pair for work (XM5).
I've had the WH-1000XM5 for less than a year, and I had to exchange it because the first pair was defective. That being said, the second pair was not better. The noise canceling on the XM5 is terrible. I took a lengthy train trip recently and I could hear every conversation around me, even with music on. I also live on a busy street and can hear the street noise while working at my desk, which I cannot hear with my other pairs (including the wired competing brands).
The noise canceling on the XM4 is great, so I am not sure what happened between the XM4 and XM5 to worsen the noise canceling this badly. I will try to return this pair, get a refund and hopefully find a pair of XM4 somewhere, or go with a competing brand.
Lesson learned: try the headphones before buying.

Meant My Expectations
I am very happy so far with purchase of the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones. Read several reviews on them and found compared with my experience using them, most were fairly accurate. This is a well built product, I have a larger head and find quite comfortable so far. I use a lot of Apple products and connects well with them. I was debating between and AirPod Max and for me i felt not only saving money but getting a much newer technology. It’s really easy to setup in the Sony App. These are well designed and surprisingly durable headphones. Great job Sony

Never Received My Order
I paid for the WH-1000XM5 and never received my package. I reached out to Sony Support and they opened a claim, telling me it could take up to a month. After waiting patiently, they came back and said there was nothing more they could do. I never received a refund or a replacement. I’m extremely disappointed—this was supposed to be a premium experience from a brand like Sony, and I feel completely let down.
I was really looking forward to trying these headphones, but unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to experience them. I can’t speak to their sound quality, comfort, or features because they never made it into my hands. Extremely disappointing, especially considering my expectations for a premium product.

These will break in under a year
I have had these headphones for 9 months when the hinge on the left side of the headband broke under totally normal use. I didn’t even drop them, and now the entire $300+ headphones can’t be used because the left ear cup has become physically unattached to the headband. The weak hinge is a manufacturing issue that Sony is aware of and refuses to acknowledge or tell its customers.
This is my SECOND Sony XM5 headset that has broken this way within 2 years. The first time they were 11 MONTHS OLD, and I dropped them from my table (~4 foot drop) and they broke this way. It was the first time I had ever dropped them. I thought it was a fluke, so I bought another pair just to have them fail the same way. I have never been rough with my headphones and I don’t work out with them specifically to avoid this issue.
The crazy thing is Sony is AWARE of this issue and doesn’t do anything about it because they know they can just deny your warranty claim. Go look at the Sony Headphones Reddit. So many people complain about the same issue happening to them WITHIN their warranty period (SO <1 YEAR OLD HEADPHONES) and Sony has told them to kick rocks. I called Sony as well and they told me the warranty does not cover any “physical damage,” even though they know it’s just a tiny weak plastic hinge part holding the entire earcup mechanism together.
If you’re trying to read reviews to compare headsets to buy, please just buy the competitor. Seriously not worth the trouble.

TERRIBLE SERVICE - OPPOSITE OF HELPFUL
I’d give this 0 stars if I could. The headband is defective and Sony refuses to replace it. They expect you to pay 1/3 of the cost of the headset to replace the headband through their supplier encompass or give you 15% off buying another pair. I shouldn’t have to pay them anything more to use these headphones well within the warranty. They don’t cover the cost of the repair or anything. Just expect you to hand their sister company $100 for a $20 headband at best. I’ll be purchasing from literally anyone else before I buy anything Sony ever again

From a woman’s perspective.
Headband is painful, not made for smaller or female/ childrens head size. I am an averaged size female and it will not adjust small enough. The added pressure gives me a headache so I do a messy bun and sit it on there until I can find a fix. I review 150-200 audiobooks a year with these. They are the best overall quality I’ve tried. The comfort is perfect on the ears. Noise cancellation is so good I’ve slept with them on. My ears do not get sweaty. I don’t have to take my earrings off. I have used them for phone calls and voice is clear to the person on the other line. Doesn’t pick up background noise. I would have upgraded to future models if they had made them to adjust smaller and fixed the headband/cushion issue. I talked to a customer service rep from the website and no changes have been made to the design to fix the problem. It is no secret and there are a lot of forums talking about ways to make these more comfortable. I will buy them immediately when or if they do.

Piece of garbage
Bought a little less than a year ago, both hinges are broken, the battery life is abysmal, the sound quality has decreased severely, now to the point where these are unusable in any shape or form. $400 for a month of good usage. After that, it just degrades very quickly. (side note; really uncomfortable most of the time, never a good fit and would always rest funky on my head and ears.)

Good sound disapointing strength
Overal good pair of headphones, but the build quality is mid at best.
I am no audiophile, and have not purchased a headset this expensive before. I have used several other mid to low-range devices and can appreciate the difference. The price is for the noise-canceling function. The quality of the music is notable in comparison to other devices. It is very noticeable when I am in public/noisy environments.
For the price, the build is disappointing. The controls work most of the time, but start to act up the longer I wear them. I suspect the pressure pad is either getting humid or depressed as I wear them. I have to turn off the control features if I wear them for more than an hour. The hinge also broke while wearing for normal use. I will admit to being a more blunt person, but I cannot point to any major drop/pressure that would explain the break. Search the internet for "1000XM5 hinge" and you'll see what I mean. For hundreds of dollars and version 5 you would think these issues would be better and not worse.

Loyal Sony Customer but Extremely Disappointed
I’ve been a longtime, devoted Sony customer I own multiple Sony devices and have always trusted your products. That’s why I was so excited (and willing to spend over $400) on these high-end headphones.
Sadly, my excitement did not last long. Both sides of the headphones broke at the hinges under normal use. I attempted to get support and a replacement from Sony before trying any DIY fixes, but received no assistance or even a discount toward a new pair. Desperate to keep using them, I glued the broken parts back together. That seemed like a temporary fix but now, just two months later, the glue failed and the internal wiring has broken. The headphones are now completely unusable.
I truly want to continue supporting Sony, but this has shaken my confidence. A product at this price point should not fail so quickly, and the lack of meaningful support is deeply disappointing. I’m now stuck without working headphones and questioning whether Sony is reliable anymore for premium audio gear.
I hope you’ll look at the attached photos and consider this as serious feedback on design durability and customer support. I’d welcome any help or resolution you can offer.

Terrible build quality
Bought it 2 years ago, but noticed peeling of the headband around 1 year in. In the last week, the hinge has fallen out like MANY of the other reviews. Microphone sound quality isn't great as advertised, it can sound a bit muffled. Sound quality is great, but build quality and customer service by Sony is terrible. If you contact customer service they can charge you $100+ to fix an obvious design flaw. The hinge is practically just glued in, which you could probs try fixing by just getting superglue or a really strong adhesive for like 10 dollars. For $300+ as a college student, this is an investment. But it is saddening to say it was a horrible decision, and should've opted for something else!

This is my last Sony product ever. I have WH1000MX5. These headphones have a ridiculous feature called Speak to chat which stops your music if you utter one word from your mouth. Even a sigh. Worst feature I have ever seen on a product.
That’s not even the worst part. Despite repeatedly going through the app on disabling the feature, it still miraculously starts on its own. I wrote to the product support, I stopped automatic update, but this still never stops bothering me. Buy Bose or Apple and stop yourself from a life of frustration.

Do NOT Buy These! Sony Will Not Help You.
I bought the Sony WH-1000XM5 in December, and after just 2 months of careful use, the headphone literally detached from the headband—a completely unacceptable failure for a $400+ premium product.
When I reached out to Sony customer support, I was shocked to be told that this issue isn’t covered under warranty. Instead, they referred me to a third-party repair service that wanted to charge me half the price of the headphones just to fix what is clearly a design flaw or manufacturing defect.
This is beyond unacceptable for a premium brand. Sony clearly does not stand behind their products, and if you have any issues, you are on your own.
?? Potential Buyers Beware: If these break down (which they very well might), Sony will leave you stranded with no reasonable support. Save your money and buy from a company that actually values its customers.

WH-1000XM5 subpar design - No Support
My son received these headphones (WH-1000XM5 as a gift last Xmas from his grandmother and within a year, the plastic connection broke from simple use. Despite having a “manufacturer warranty” , Sony has no interest in replacing or compensating him for a clearly subpar product. My daughter has the same headphones and the charging port melted. Yes - melted. So there is a trend here of poorly designed and supported product by Sony and based on this, I will never buy any Sony products due to the fact that the company doesn’t stand behind their products. I gave my son my Sennheiser headphones and he is very happy with them. Much better headphones. So from one tech-heavy family to another - Don’t buy Sony headphones!!!

Awesome Christmas Gift
I got these as a Christmas gift. I love how comfortable they are, they fit over my big ears. The sound quality is incredible. I love the DSEE Extreme and EdgeAI. It really hels when listening to comedy shows from 06. I love the ANC, but
especially the Ambient mode is great, especially with the voice filter. Something that isn't talked about much is the hourly clock that's part of the autoplay feature. I don't use the actual autoplay, but I do use the hourly clock, and the thing that tells you the date and weather in the morning. I love how it says good morning to me. The Sound Connect app does need screenreader support added for VoiceOver, I'm a blind user and this is the only problem I have. I lost my XM3 at a McDonalds and missed how comfortable they were. i switched to the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones for a while, but they weren't as comfy, that's why I asked for the XM5. Also the microphones are awesome for calls, and the Alexa function is amazing. Short story: Get these headphones, they're amazing.

I got these 3 months ago and they hold up great. I love the sound and the weight of these headphones. They also dont get hot which is exactly what I was looking for. I would have given it 5 stars but there are a couple of things I dont like:
1. The mechanism to make them longer is not so smooth and you cannot operate it with one hand. I have to use both hands to pull them out which is kinda annoying.
2. the cushion has bends in it for no apparent reason. So i am scared they wont last too long or keep their shape.

HORRIBLE noise cancelling. Non-foldable
BACKGROUND: I have had the XM3s since they came out and I LOVE THEM. I have worn these babies into the GROUND - they look like they did two tours in Iraq, came home to find their wife cheating, and now have to pay child support for three kids they can barely afford. The headpiece is broken, and the noise cancellation no longer works. It's time for a new pair. I thought it would be the XM5s.
THE GOOD:
MIC QUALITY is crisp and superb compared to previous Sony XM versions and Apple AirPod Max.
WEIGHT: Super lightweight and comfortable.
SOUND QUALITY: Music is more crisp, loud and clear esp when compared to earlier Sony versions.
ADJUSTABLE SOUND SETTINGS: You can adjust treble, bass, etc etc which is pretty cool.
THE BAD:
NOISE CANCELLATION: HORRRRRRRIBLE!!! With noise cancellation fully enabled and Ambient Noise turned down to 0/1 (out of 20), you can STILL literally hear your tv, street noise, side conversations of people walking by, sirens, horns, exhaust fans on trucks, toilets flushing, the wind, your own disturbing thoughts, literally everything. Compared to the XM3s and 4s, the noise cancellation on the 5s is SHOCKINGLY bad.
STUPID APPS: You have to use an app just to use these headphones, which is annoying. I just want to them on and have MAX noise cancellation each and every time. Not so with these. They "monitor your location" where you can "customize" the amount of ambient noise you want to let in when you stand still, walk, are in a car, and take public transit...but no matter WHAT you do to enable full noise cancellation, you will still hear a TON of ambient noise, in particular if you stand still.
PORTABILITY: They no longer fold. Whose bright (read: horrible) idea was it to get rid of the foldability feature that makes these portable?! Instead, since they cannot collapse, Sony gives you some slim carrying case which now means these headphones will solidly take up half your normal sized (gym, work, daily) bag. Horrible idea.

These headphones Were Not cheap! Now I can't wear them without having a "barrier" between my skin and the headphones. Giving a nasty rash. Supposedly due to the acrylic resin that is used as the glue. I HAVE to use my Hoodie or headband to cover my ears. I complained to the company many times for 2 years. I'm not a person who gets allergies at all. This is my first time in my life that I found something that my body reacts to. No over use, not a dirty person. And I get a reaction within minutes. THIS IS AFTER CLEANING AND DISINFECTING THEM AS RECOMMENDED BY SONY! STILL HAPPENS. Gave them up to my partner since they were very expensive. AND THEN IT HAPPENED TO THEM AS WELL!!! NEVER AGAIN, SONY. NEVER! ??

Headphones
They are bad headphones . Within a month they start to peel off . The one year warranty doesn’t cover because they said it’s cosmetic .

SONY WH1000XM5-Useless for watching movies.
Useless for watching movies. Cannot disable Automatic Gain Control -AGC of source signal. Dialogue volume OK but when characters stop talking volume drops to total silence eliminating all critical background sounds and any mood music. Destroys suspension of disbelief pulling viewer out of movie. Volume continuely goes up and down ruining and wasting all the effort and work by the sound engineer.
Gone back to my WIRED Sennheiser headphones.

$600, down the drain.
Bought 2 pair, neither stay connected when fully charged. Mowing the lawn, phone in pocket, headphones disconnect/reconnect several times. Poor purchase.

Item broke within a year, bogus warranty
This item was purchased as a gift, and within a year, while under warranty, the band connecting to the earpiece tore after normal usage, just being taken off my head. I called customer service several times to have the item repaired or replaced due to the item being defective, and after a frustrating experience dealing with customer service, they finally emailed me a link to send images of the damage to determine whether it can be replaced or repaired under warranty. After sending the images, I never heard anything back, and had to call them back and go through the same hoops to be told simply that "physical damage is not covered by their limited warranty" without any sort of in depth explanation. To add insult to injury, their only offers the remedy the situation was either having the headband tear repaired for a price of $100, which is already a sizeable amount compared to the price of the item, or a 15-20% discount off of buying a new one, both options I consider lackluster. By all means I do not recommend buying this item, it will not last even a year, and they will not honor their warranty.

Might be great for you but were not it for me.
The headphones are…okay. I mean sound quality is good but at $400 it should be.
Out of the box I wasn’t very impressed. I felt I could’ve been more satisfied if I returned them and tried a different model or brand, but I didn’t for some reason.
The main reason I bought a pair of $400 headphones was for the best ANC. These were good but I felt like no matter the adjustments available, the headband did not suit my head. Which is odd because my head is pretty average if not a bit on the wide side. Perhaps they were not engineered with female heads in mind..? So the ANC barely did anything for me and maybe even got progressively worse over time. I also didn’t like that there’s only two modes, transparency and ANC.
Out of the box the speaker parts were touch sensitive which was annoying so I turned that off.
These are absolutely not for workouts or hot weather. Sweat/ condensation builds up in the speaker parts and they got in the way for some overhead movements.
All of that aside, I would’ve kept wearing them anyway. Except for the fact that I’ve owned two models in the past two years. They keep breaking in the same spot!
Im extremely careful with all my stuff and maintain them well. So when my first pair broke I was surprised.
I opened a repair case with Sony about them and the service was fantastic. I was quickly sent a new pair in exchange for my old one, free of charge.
Then, a year later when my second pair broke (again, in the same spot!!) I reached out to Sony assuming I would receive the same service because this has got to be a design flaw. However, Sony is now charging $99 (excluding shipping) every time they break due to their own design flaw. It’s basically a $99 yearly subscription to maintain my $400 headphones. I heavily rely on headphones in every day life so it really is upsetting to either have to pay $400 for another pair of headphones or pay $109 to have mine sent away to a third party company for them to break again soon.
So if you’re somehow more careful than me, have a bigger head than me, and/or can afford a $99+ yearly repair fee then these could be for you.

Headband is very cheaply made. $100 to repair
I got these headphones about six months ago. There is a crack In the headband. I did not drop them or misuse them. Try to use the warranty on them however apparently it's not for the headband. They feel cheaply made. The headband also does not lock in place when adjusting the size. I wish sony cared more about the quality of their products.

Great sound but not great if you sweat at work
I’ve had my WH-1000XM5 for a little shy of 1year I am having an issue with moisture getting into the headphones near the drivers and sensors. When I turn my head the sensor activates and turns off my music or hang up the phone. I’ve tried the steps Sony tech support suggested but nothing has fixed the problem. I use my headphones at work to drown out the loud machinery we use. Sound quality is excellent. Customizations are great. Phone calls tend to be clear and my voice tends to be low for person on the other side of my call. I do love these headphones but would be nice if I could keep the moisture out of driver & sensor area.
