Works, but software is junk
My antique DVPND70H will remember where you were in the last several DVDs you played, even if they were removed and reinserted after months. This expensive junk can't remember where you were in the BD that STAYED INSERTED when you paused the movie half way through. Quailty! (quality misspelled on purpose)

Fast solid unit
Has played everything flawlessly & I found the setup easy & intuitive
Build quality is excellent
Paired with my a95l perfectly
Note: upscale I found best on the Auto2 setting (which involves taking the player out of Bravia TV MODE that it does automatically)
Also Dolby Vision requires setting on/off at each individual disc
Overall very pleased with the picture & audio quality
Maxine has some weight/heft in a positive way

Good Quality, Many Features, but...
The device can play virtually any modern media format, snd it works togehetr well with other SONY equipment like e.g. a TV set. Handling is easy as long as you do not need to go deeper into the setup - there things becom cryptic, and the help texts and other documentation do not answer all questions in an easy way.
Another trade-off is that there are some internet services like youtube and netfoilx pre-installed, but I could not find a way to install other streaming apps.
And one more flaw: It can play SACD discs and output data in DSD format, but not on the coax diogital output socket, only on HDMI. I did not expect this, I wanted to play SADC media and send the DSD stream to my DAC which can decode DSD directly. No way, you need an amp or DAC with HDMI input, which I do not have and want.
But there is at least one adapter box on the market which can extract the sound data stream from HDMI and output even DSD on a S/PDIF socket. But caution: Most of these devices cannot do DSD although they claim it.
Anyway, the UBP-X800M2 4K is great for all video formats, easy to use and I recommend it as long as you do not have exotic ideas like me :)

Best Choice For 4K Blu-Ray
Purchased about three weeks ago at the same time as X93L 65" TV. It is everything that Sony says it is, amazing performance, incredible sound and picture. With the TV and 4K Blu-Ray set up I'll now move on to making my sound system choice, it will absolutely be Sony.

Second Sony DVD BluRay Player, even better
I purchased the ultra high-definition Sony UBP-X800M2 after reviewing what is on the market currently. This is my second Sony Blu-ray player, paired to a new OLED TV I recently purchased. Set-up was quick and easy, construction appears to be solid, performance has been perfect with both DVD and blu-ray discs. The outer surface of the player is perfect, giving it a smudge-free appearance. So far, no complaints or problems!

Excellent build many high end features
Overall an high end metal cabinet build. Lacks optical out and rca out. Cannot play dvd albums picture quality is magnificent. Definition is so refined it’s only the limitations of our current led screen that deprives your eyes of its full expectation. The Sony upscale is amazing. The software and lack of upgrade or option to add voice command that disappoint an otherwise amazing experience. Software update for discriminating internet users is grossly lacking. The 700 series has more. Overall the product is a joy to operate. Only question the 1 year warranty like competition, if you build a solid unit, why not stand behind it. Recommend the 3 year extended warranty.

Excellence at a great price
I have a dvb audio collection that I have not been able to enjoy to its audio fullest. The choices available were very expensive (Oppo, Pioneer Elite) and I wanted one that would do UHD. This player does everyth9ng I want. It even shows bit rate for dvd audio when a new track starts. The UHD with HDR looks su0erb. My TV only does HDR so I don't care about dolby vision.
This is the s4econd Sony disc player in the house. The other is #D. I am very pleased with the addition of this player to my high end home theater setup.

Falls Just Short
Just set this up a day ago. Tv has great picture and can be seen from the side very well. Sound is not as good as expected but since it didn’t come with a Owners Operation Manual I may not have it set up correctly. The remote works well but instead of little colored buttons why not have a couple for Hulu and Sling. My complaint here is that I have a Amazon Firestick plugged into it and I can choose what I want to watch with the tv’s remote but can’t control sound or pull up menu. That’s Crazy. These are the short comings , setup sheet should have better instructions, tv should have operators manual, remote lacks access to other program providers. All this being said is why it’s not 5 star.

great player with one software glitch
Very sharp picture to my UHD 4K TV. The only problem that I see is that the pop up TV display always shows no disk even when a Blu Ray or DVD is inserted. Movies play as they should as soon as I hit the play button. I have already updated the firmware so that is not the solution. I wish the controls on the box were illuminated. As it is one must use the remote for all tasks in a dim room.

Great Unit
This is an excellent unit. Is much heavier than previous player, operates very quite, easy to use, set up was a breeze. Bought to mate up with our new 75X900F and picture and playback is excellent. I don't require a lot of apps as the TV already has them, and I prefer to unit to be focused on its primary function anyhow. We have been building our 4K movie library and we really enjoy getting the full benefit of the playback in 4K. I would recommend this unit and look forward to many years of service.

Disappointing and misleading
I bought this streaming blu ray player expecting to have multiple apps on here. It only has 3. How misleading. If I knew this before hand I would have purchased another product. My wife has a streaming blu ray player that’s a Sony and it has multiple apps on that one. The problem with that one is you can’t update it to include new apps (Disney plus). If you can put multiple apps on your TVs you would think you could do it for a blu ray player especially since it is a 4K one.

Great features, pictures, and sound output.
I bought this device to get more out of my 4K Blu-ray disks on my Sony TV and Dolby Atmos receiver. The Dolby Atmos and picture has improved from my PS5 as a play back device. The only issues I have is that sometime the Sony Bravia TV decides to switch the sound to the EARC channel from the dedicated HDMI sound connection channel. When it does I need to change the Denon Reciver back to the correct sound input. It would also be nice to install Disney+, Vudu, and movies Anywhere to the players options. The images and sound from Netflix and my Blu-rays are great. I setup 13 speakers in a 7.2.4 on my receiver. I had to do a pre-amp out for two of the channels.

Excellent performance but not user friendly
The build quality and overall performance are excellent and the inclusion of SACD and DVD-A playback is very welcome, but as others have pointed out, the Dolby Vision implementation is abysmal and there’s no reason for it to be so difficult to to switch to. After many firmware updates without resolution, I’m assuming there is not going to be any fix for it anytime soon which is why I’m leaving only three stars. Also, the lack of streaming apps is annoying since the previous model in the line included many options. Note to Sony: You don’t gain customers by removing popular features from your newest models of electronics. Overall, good performance but lacking in user-friendly features and use. If the DV issue is ever fixed, I’ll gladly re-evaluate my rating.

I brought this in Sept 2021 & upon of operation of DVD player, the unit would not display any graphics (hello, track #, time etc). Just a blank screen. Therefore, I took it back to BB & exchange for another unit. The 2nd DVD unit, process the same defects ( no read out of graphics). I'm very disappointed with this product.
I brought this same model approximately 1.5 years ago and it operates fine. Your input is absolutely needed. Regards

A exquisite 4K Ultra High Definition Player
I first read many of the reviews written by present owners. I then went on line & placed my order for in store pickup. Once I set the unit up and connected it to my 4K UHD TV and turned it on, I was blown away. No matter the disc format it loaded rapidly. The dvd and blu-ray movies were brighter as well as more vivid color wise. When I played a 4K disc, I was stunned at the quality of the image. The sound quality was absolutely amazing, detailed, and immersive. It clearly out performed the LG blu-ray player that I had been using over the last 3 years. The remote control is lightning fast without any delay whatsoever. I have always loved Sony’s DVD players/recorders and now there 4K UHD player remains a high quality product. I highly and strongly recommend the UBP-X800M2 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray / DVD player for anyone looking to upgrade from a standard blu-ray player. You will not be disappointed!

DISAPPOINTED!
This is a great player except for one thing: the 'pause' doesn't hold very long on many Blu-ray discs and you have to start over from the absolute beginning each time you come back to the movie. This is ridiculous when much lower priced players (LG) don't have this issue. Very disappointed that Sony overlooked this simple item on a pricey 2019 model.

So far, so very good!
The wife let me update the main living room's video system, and since we had a Sony 4K TV I decided to get a 4K player. I did some quick research and the UBP-X800M2 came up highly rated in many reviews. I've always been a fan of Sony, so I was intrigued and took the plunge.
Full disclosure: at the time of this review I have yet to purchase/view a 4K disc, so I can't really comment on that. What I can say is that the player really upgraded the visuals of my bluray discs. I watched the old Kurt Russell movie "Soldier" on it the other night and although it was my first viewing of the disc since purchase, it seemed that the picture just popped. I have a lower mid-level soundbar so I'm sure I missed out on some of the audio options, but overall I really enjoyed watching the movie for the first time in many years.
At some point I may have to do some song and dance to get another one of these for the Man Cave and really run it through its paces with my home theater receiver.

Connects well to other Sony products
I bought this machine to replace an older Blu-ray player that stopped sending video to the TV. The background info for the player indicated that you can play just about any of the older technologies like CDs, DVDs and BlueRays. So far, that is true with different disks that I have. I also bought the machine for its 4k capability. In my case, that is looking forward to the day that I purchase a TV capable of taking advantage of the player.
Set up is simple, and is totally compatible with older DVDs and Blu-ray discs. Also connected perfectly with my home network, so it talks to my computer as a media renderer. The machine is only a couple of days old, so I can't say how long it will hold up, but good experience on installation so far.
The remote control seems a little flimsy. The older one that was with my previous Sony player was higher quality, but the bonus is that the old Sony remote is completely compatible with the new player.

Decent update, but not keeping pace
I bought this to replace a 13 year old Sony. The previous model was good, but had a few quirks That seems to be a trend with sony. The new model Is sleek and I like the form factor. They just don't go far enough on the features. No USB connection, despite what the manual and software say. You can stream NetFlix, Amazon, and YouTube, but not YouTubeTV. Disney plus requires an Android TV. The product details says "may play more streaming services", but that apparently is wishful thinking.
I can see these limitation if you are looking at a $50 model, but at $250, I was hoping not to be so limited. I don't think Sony really cares about this technology like it should. I am looking for a device that I can centralize everything. But as it is, I need Roku and a DVD player...more devices and multiple remotes (have not found a universal that works well with what I have.)

Well first I bought a LG player thinking that since it had streaming WiFi I could just add the apps I wanted onto it (prime, Netflix, & Vudu) I was wrong so took it back to store and bought this Sony instead, cannot add any apps to this one either, and I wish there was an update for it so I could get Vudu on it, my last Sony's had all three of those & many more apps as well. At least have 2 of the 3 apps I use on this player, I wish I could add other I wanted!!!

So far this product has worked flawlessly, I purchased the same unit 3 years ago and had nothing but troubles with it starting a movie and freezing up mid way through a streaming movie. Great Picture and Superb Wireless Streaming
Even though selection of Apps is the severely limited, the resulting high quality of the display of movie Blu-ray and DVD discs and the superb wireless streaming get this machine a five stars from me.. Fortunately for me, Amazon Prime is one of the apps so it does not really affect my use of this device but check the apps available before buying to see if your streaming service is covered.

Beast Little Big Thing!
First of all, the packaging was a bit difficult but it's not a big hassle. They packed it with well done padding to hold it together so it wouldn't bend or tear or broken. After setting it up, learning about the Dolby Vision issue, I was able to enable it through the setting and let me tell you this. This thing had made all the movies I have BEAUTIFUL. After watching Final Fantasy XV: Kingsglaive, I can't tell you how much this thing had turn this incredible incredible with every details and such. Oh, also, I got it on sale so it's a no brainer, I had to buy it. Don't pass it up, its worth every penny. Coming from LG UBK80, this thing IS FAR BETTER than that 4K DVD player. Go AND BUY IT. You won't regret it. Thank you, Sony for this amazing thing. :)

Terrible Waste of Money
I bought this for Black Friday in 2019 to replace my existing Sony Blue Ray player which has become increasingly unresponsive to remote input over the years. I was initially disappointed to find that the UBP-X800M2 does not allow installation of any additional apps, so you are stuck with Netflix, YouTube and PrimeVideo. That eliminates our ability to use Hulu, DisneyPlus, HBONow and VUDU for which we also have subscriptions.
I was willing to live with that, but, due to the fact that we typically just cast the other services from our phones using Chromecast, we really didn't use this thing much in the last 6 months. So just a day or two ago I went to turn it on so my 4 year old could use the remote to watch Netflix (without the need for my phone) and low and behold the UBP-X800M2 turns on but will not transmit a signal to my TV over the same HDMI that it's been connected to since November. Additionally, the remote control will not open the disk tray, but when i manually click the bottom on top of the UBP-X800M2 the disc tray opens. I put brand new batteries in the remote to double check and it still won't open, nor does it appear to respond to any of the other button clicks, except the TV on/off button, which does indeed turn my TV on and off.
So in short, owned it for 6 months, barely used it because there's a limited app support, and it crapped out. And naturally I didn't keep my receipt, which is required for proof of purchase to register this thing online and make a complaint, so I'm stuck with a $150 electrical paper weight.

Versatile Universal Disc Player
I received this as a Christmas present and have been putting it through it's paces daily since then. This is one of the only, if not THE only, universal disc players on the market. I have a small collection of SACDs and DVD-audio disks that I want to be able to continue playing. In addition, I am building a collection of UHD Blu-ray movies. This player does all this and more.
The music handling is perfect. It correctly decodes the aforementioned special music format discs and sends out high-res audio and DSD to my receiver. Since it is using an HDMI interface, no quality is lost and the result is perfect playback. The machine is very quiet in operation as well. The ability to load audio files on a USB drive or from over the network is much appreciated as well.
Video handling is also excellent. The video processing is extremely good and movies look fantastic on 4K TVs as well as regular HD TVs. Conversion from 4K HDR to 1080p SDR is very accurate and doesn't introduce any problems. HDR and Dolby Vision work very well. Playback of UHD content from a USB drive works just as well as playing a disk. There is no front panel time counter on this model, which would have been nice, but the lack of it does make the player better if you like a perfectly dark viewing environment. The only issue with the video features is lack of Dolby Vision auto-detection. Dolby Vision needs to be turned on and off manually. If this feature is added via software update, this would be a perfect player.
Overall I am very satisfied with the UBP-X800M2. It handles all the formats with with flawless quality and is very reasonably priced for the feature set. Highly recommended!

Great quality disappointing features
Great quality, but no Dolby Vision auto detection
Great quality, but no DV (Dolby Vision) auto detection. The same issue that the Sony has with UBP-X700. This issue was heavily criticised on the Web with the sony UBP-x700, still Sony decided to ignore it with this new model. If you turn the DV on, all hdr only disks will play DV (Too bright and wrong color scheme). All content played from the Netflix app even SDR will be Dolby Vision (Even worse). My Apple TV 4K streamer has an option to play according to content. Come on Sony why Apple is better than you! Another thing surprisingly bad that this player is worse than the previous (UBP-X800) regarding streaming services. Only three streaming services (Netflix, Amazon prime, You Tube) and no way to add streaming services. The UBP-x800 had much more streaming services and the ability to add services. I see already a lot of reviews on this new product criticizing its lack of Auto DV and few streaming services. I hope Sony will hear it's customers and will update it's software to fix the issues. Until then don't buy this device.

Immersive SACD
Pros: This blu-ray player is a multi-tasker. Unlike the PS5 that cost me $500, this player beautifully supports all the goodies; HD Audio (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X*3) and 4K 60p/Ultra HD, 4K HDR, Dolby Vision. Better yet, it supports redbook CDs and multi-layer SACD, the main reason for my purchase. Con: Streaming is handcuffed.

What happened to all the apps????
I also own a UBP-X800, and I bought this unit thinking it would be comparable. I am sorry to say it falls way short of the X800. The X800 has Pandora, Hulu, Sirius XM, Slacker Radio and so many other wonderful apps. All this has is YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon Prime, as does the X800, but out of all of those, I only use YouTube. Sirius and Pandora would have been nice as I bough this unit for the living room and I do have subscription. A weak imitation of it's older brother. The only thing I can say is a superiority about this unit is that its YouTube app works better than its older brother. It does not truncate the beginning of videos like the older model does. I am disappointed, and it is your own fault, Sony, for setting such high standards and then not keeping up with them.

Easy to setup 4K Blu-ray player
Received this Blu-ray player as a birthday gift from my son and set it up and had it running the same day. The video quality and connect ability is fantastic. The remote control is extremely easy to use and has all the features that just about anybody would be happy with. Upscaling is excellent from 1080p blu-rays and 7.1 audio when available will work great even through the digital coax cable. Disc loading is also very quick. Video streaming is also excellent. I can't find any faults at this time.

Excellent All-around Music & Movie Player
I debated between this and the X700 Blue Ray player by Sony. As I had just purchased a Sony OLED TV I wanted to stay in the Sony "family" as prior experience with other manufacturers had been less than satisfactory. This is a well made, structurally sound machine that would be able to handle transient vibrations in my audio unit. It also had the ability to play via Bluetooth which was a great feature for listening to music. I have lots of CDs and this unit will play nearly any version of music you have on CD or DVD, and play it to your bluetooth headset/headphones, etc. The playback is easy, the remote is compact and easily usable. It also streams. It is worth the extra cost for the quality of the build, and the excellent BluRay pictures it shows on our TV. It also upscales older DVDs as well - I watched an old non-BluRay Springsteen video on DVD and was blown away by the color & clarity - it seemed like a BluRay disc! This machine is well worth the extra money over the X700 in my opinion.

Average-Slow
On the positive side, the picture quality looks good. However, it takes a while for the unit to turn on/off. If you insert a USB, the files sometimes display a picture of what is in the file and sometimes displays the actual file name. Go figure. There is a noticeable delay between inputting a command and the execution of the command.

definitely an upgrade from the X-700
I retired my mostly functional X-700 to the bedroom and upgraded to the X-800M2 for my main theater and Its quality build is immediately apparent and its Stylish as well but Its Not Just about aesthetics, I also notice the big Improvement in clarity even in already exceptional HDR Enhancements. Does Help Having A QuantumLED TV the X-700 Was Good enough But the X-800M2 is Immersively vivid and Bright and the contrast in the picture is the best I've seen

Sony blu-ray players keep getting better
Bought this a couple months ago with a new Sony sound system to go with it. Great purchase. I have always had Sony products for digital media since CD players came out in the 80's. I have found Sony products to be of high quality and very reliable. This is no exception.
A salesperson tried to steer me to a competitive brand, but I refuse. I will always purchase Sony audio and video products when given the choice. They have never failed me.
The quality is outstanding. I really enjoy listening to my 5.1 mixes from blu-ray discs on this. When combined with Sony speaker system and subwoofer the sound is totally awesome.

One Exception
I am very pleased with this unit. Had two more expensive Panasonic units, both that refused to eject media after a few month's normal operation. This unit is also heavier than the Panasonics; it appears to be structurally stronger and better designed. Operation... So far, the few times a disc has stalled turned out to be smudges and finger prints on the media; after a quick cleaning, the unit has played on without a problem. The only improvement I would like to see involves playing Dolby Vision HDRs; you have to go into the Screen Settings menus to enable the separate Dolby Vision option before playing a Dolby Vision disc and then go back and turn the setting off for playing other media. Surely, any widely used video format should be automatically sensed after hitting the Play button. Overall, I think the UBP-X800M2 4K UHD Blu-ray Player is great; it is better than the two more expensive units that had disc drive problems. My last comment and recommendation is to compare brand warranties before you buy any expensive electronics. Some warranties cover parts for one year and labor for only six months!

I bought this a month ago and still haven’t used it because it won’t sync with my TV still trying to figure out the format to let them pair together. Otherwise it’s not an easy installation and I have had many people looking at it and couldn’t figure it out and called Sony to try to figure it out it works on one TV but not the other. So the DVD player works it just won’t pair up to my 4K ultra high definition TV so I am very dissatisfied

Sony should be ashamed of this poor quality, its very much not consistent with the rest of their product line.

Missing some features but still a good machine
I would have liked a zoom feature so that I can fill the screen with those 1,000 titles that I recorded on a DVD recorder. They show up window-boxed otherwise. Images look great although I'm not using a 4K TV - yet. The upscaling feature makes DVDs look super and Blu Ray discs shine - as long as the source material is good. Having easy access to Netflix and Amazon Prime is great, if only it had "Watch TCM" - I would be a happy camper.

Bad device
Sony UBP-X800M2 my personal opinion
1. Pixel motion in smooth and good " 24p True Cinema movie "
2. Very low background noises
Compressed colors, there is no wide stage for colors, faded and poor quality paint
a. No good conversion to 4: 2: 2 or 4: 4: 4 and not 12 BIT - the mechanism works but weak, good idea but weak hardware.
4. HDR is weak and imperceptible
5. Missing details in color
6. Lack of shades in color
7. Medium contrast
8. Lack of image sharpness
9. It is not possible to hear DD + and not Atmos TrueHD / via USB and even on original discs these formats cannot be heard
10. No sound conversion from 48HZ to 96/192HZ
11. Remote control lacking lighting
12. Slow film loading
13. Color can only be calibrated in two foci and not at a quality level
14. Only one USB port
15.there is no sharpness mechanism
16.there is no texture mechanism
17. Outdated image calibration - missing gamma calibration, no sharpness calibration, no Cinema Motion / Smooth Motion and more ..
18. Noise reduction mechanism / noise filter - weak and imperceptible
19. No marking for movies - HDR10 + or HDR 10, only HDR mark
20. Bonnie seals the image from noise with chrome which prevents seeing texture, details, shades so the image quality will always be mediocre
a. In light of this there is no difference between 1080P and 4K film in this device because no details and shades of colors can be seen
b. HDR on this device only ruins the image more
21. "The player can support video bit rate up to 40 Mbps " -It is listed in the operating instructions, when 4K is over 100mbps
the device does not come close to OPPO 103 in image quality a very mediocre device, smooth and pleasant film movement.
the processor is very weak and took time to load a film.
the processor cannot convert color quality or sound quality.
can't believe OPPO has not been producing 4 years and Sony look like a joke !!!
HDR 10 or 10+ is not noticeable that works at all no depth to color or quality to color
I did a test - I brought 15 people / couples to see HDR in my house
1. I showed them OPPO 103 and told them it was a 4K HDR movie
In practice it was a 1080P SD movie
1.1 I then showed them a full ultra ray on a Sony UBP-X800M2 + NVIDIA PRO level 4K device
all 15 couples / people were in shock I told them that what they see in OPPO103 is normal blue ray
1.2 All men and couples preferred the movie on OPPO rather than on X800M2 + NVIDIA PRO devices
not a serious product, a big disappointment from Sony.
no wonder people do not buy Blu-ray - because it ruins the experience and quality of movies compared to a computer
can't believe how Sony is ruining its name!
there is no service in Sony like talking to a computer that will not help you in anything.
I hope I no longer have to buy a Sony

Upgrade from UK90
Bought a Sony TV, and wanted Dolby Vision, so I upgraded to the X800m2.
My only complaint is the requirement to switch Dolby Vision on and off. It would be nice if it auto-detected the DV metadata and enabled itself.

Review of UBP-X800M2
I've had this amplifier/receiver for about a month and it is working well for me. It has many features which I may never use, and a software manual which takes quite a while to print (over 130 pages). I have much to learn about the amp, but so far it does all that I need. My previous amp lasted me about 12 years. I hope this one lasts longer.

Solid, Fast, Quiet and feature-packed
One of the best no-frills players Sony has offered in years. Sturdy metal case, very low noise, 4K HDR performace is quite speedy. Doesn't struggle and the remote control is a good size and layout. My only complaint is the STOP button... why is this on the remote? If you hit it accidentally, everything shuts down and you have to find your place in the movie to get it going again. Perfect, other than that.

Easy setup. Fast loading of movies and flawless playback so far. I like how it grips to the glass table I have it sitting on so it can't be picked up easily or slid about.

Plays everything. SACD, UHD 4K Movies, BluRays
Very happy with this purchase. Perfect for my needs. Wanted something to play SACDs, DVD-Audio, Blu-Ray, UHD-4K Movies, etc. It does it all really well. Plus it streams Amazon and Netflix built in which is a bonus. I just plugged it into my Onkyo 5.1 AV receiver (via HDMI) and it started working fine. Might be nice to have some kind of display on the unit, but I don’t need it since I always use my TV as the display. Highly recommended.

Excellent player
This is an excellent disc player. You do need to select app Dolby Vision in the menu. When Dolby vision is on the Bravia feature is disabled. Some reviews have stated you can't play discs without Dolby Vision when the Dolby Vision is on. You can play discs that don't have Dolby Vision with the Dolby Vision app is selected. I like the new home menu which is simpler without all the apps the previous model 800 had,. It is great disc player for CD"s and a SACD's. Picture and sound for video playback is superb.

Sony TV excellent. Blu Ray not as much
I bought a new one to replace one that I had less than two years. Before that I had one that didn't even last that long. I did buy the extra ins. but because of the covid virus I couldn't get help with that. It's just my husband and myself and the only time we use it is in the evening and I clean it periodically so I am not pleased with the lasting power. I am pleased with the sharp color and I would not have replaced AGAIN if I didn't basically like it.I am so hoping this one last since I couldn't get ins. on it because of the covid. It was nice to be able to tell the store what one I had and to order a new one and do a pick up because it was a necessity, again because of covid. Anyway I hope you can improve their lasting power.

Replaced a dead blu-ray player. I was reluctant to purchase because everything is about streaming these days. I wish I would have not waited so long. What a difference. I expected a better picture but the sound is amazing. All of my old DVD’s have never looked or sounded better. Really good upscaling. Bought on sale so was reasonably priced. Player is solid and heavy and does not look cheap. I hope it lasts for a long time. Can’t comment on Netflix. I don’t use it for streaming I have other devices that I use for Netflix, YouTube, etc.

Known issue - DO NOT BUY
Had this player for about a year now. Great player when it works, but the known issues on this player and its flaws are complete deal breakers
1) There is an alleged laser issue both with this model and the cheaper one in the lineup, that causes discs to freeze or skip during playback. I've had this happen to me each time in the last 4-5 discs I've watched, from LOTR 4K to Harry Potter 4K. Discs are completely smudge and scratch free, brand new discs, yet the player freezes and skips. Restarting the machine usually fixes it, and I can resume where I left off, but that's simply not acceptable coming from Sony (didn't they create blu-ray in the first place?).
2) This other issue is more documented, and is more of an inconvenience than the first problem, and that's with how Dolby Vision is enabled on this player. The user has to go into the Setup menu each and every time to either enable DV playback when playing a DV disc, and to turn it off when playing discs without DV.
In the end, the freezing/skipping is a deal breaker - DO NOT BUY!!!

Not auto 4k, must force it to sync with 4k TV
Just got this, to replace a previous Bravia sync BD player 10-12 years old that is acting up and only plays DVDs now. Since I have Sony 4K near top-of-the-line OLED TV, I opted for their better 4k BD player model. After hooking it up with a 4k HDMI cable and going thru all the settings, it only syncs at 1080p output. The only way to get 4k is to manually set the BD player to 4k, "Auto" resolution setting does not give you 4k output even on the best TVs Sony makes. My less than 1-year-old A80H Sony TV using the proper ARC HDMI port would not auto-sync for 4k unless I set the BD player to only be 4k. I prefer to use "auto" functions in most of the settings, so for a higher-end BD player price, not so "auto" detect. Please fix in software updates, please.
The unit is heavy - so should have some good built quality inside. The door seems to be the flimsiest thing on this unit. A little strange to have only 2 buttons on this unit, the remote controls everything, and can't play from the player. 1- year warranty is nice,
I would give this a 5-star unit, if the 4k was auto-on, when capable. But this should be a solid unit compared to competitors.

Nothing but issues from the start!
I've had this player for a little over 2 weeks. I've used, or tried to use to be more accurate, the player maybe a dozen times in that time period, and I have yet to start it up once and make it through a movie/show without having to restart the player. It either completely freezes, or more often lately, the picture cuts out and audio continues running. It's nothing in my setup causing the issue, it's the unit. Returning it this weekend.

Nice player but 4K HDR was disappointing.
In general I like this player. Quality seems good. The 4K resolution looks amazing on my XBR-55X900F. BUT, 4K HDR was a bit disappointing, and it's not just Sony but HDR in general. I popped in a 4K UltraHD disk (SOLO) and was surprised how dark and flat it appeared. The Blu-ray disk for the same movie was much brighter and contrastier. A bit of research on the internet and it seems this is the general consensus for 4K HDR. If there is any ambient light in the room then 4K HDR will seem dark and flat. And with Dolby Vision the brightness and contrast are baked into the file format - I couldn't adjust the brightness. Later that evening I watched another movie in 4K HDR (The Mummy) and I had the room totally dark, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Luckily most, if not all, 4K UltraHD discs come with a Blu-ray disc, so I'll save my 4K viewing for the night and enjoy Blu-ray in the day. Blu-ray looks fantastic on this player. Even my old DVDs look great.
I also like that I can stream music from PC through this player to my surround speakers.
I would recommend this product with the above caveat about HDR.

I have only played 2 movies on it so far but it has very robust features and is very well built as well, I only buy Sony players for my physical media as they tend to make the best players in the mid range market, If you are into collecting physical media like I am then just do yourself a favor and get this player. It has dual band Wi-Fi ethernet connectivity as well, has dolby vision plus HDR for 4K blu ray playback as well upscaling for regular blu rays and dvd dics as well. It will also play your super audio format cd's as well if you have any of those kicking about. Just get this player and do not hesitate!

Sony does NOT stand by its products.
I purchased this blue-ray player 12/2/19 and it has had very little use.
A few days ago I got a message that the firmware needed to be upgraded.
After this process, the player was useless!!! The Sony forum was filled with other
users with the same problem. A link for a replacement circuit board was provided by a user. The cost of the board was $294.83!!! Sony knew about defective main boards in this unit and did NOTHING to compensate the unlucky people that bought this player. I've spent a great deal of time with Sony technical support and customer support and they will NOT provided a single penny towards the replacement circuit board. I will NEVER purchase another Sony product!

Truly universal player
I already have the previous model (UBP-X800M) which I had bought needing to buy a 4K player with a build quality comparable to my OPPO Blu-ray player with SACD and DVD-Audio capabilities. My
Conclusion? The Sony has a build quality every bit as good as the OPPO yet with a much faster load and response time! With this new purchase I decided to upgrade to get Dolby Atmos, HDR-10, Dolby Vision, and region free capabilities (region free is available only with players specifically marked as such) . I disagree with one negative review I read online that switching between regions is difficult - it is not difficult at at all! Highly recommended.

Blu-ray players; get 'em while you can!
I bought this Blu-ray/streaming player as part of an update my home theater. I like it and it works well with speakers I had before. I needed a new Blu-ray player as I have a library and am concerned about the loss of Blu-ray players as the market disappears. I like this because it is well built and sturdy.

Great picture quality but only 3 streaming chanel
Sony is a great product and the picture in 4k is great. It nice a heavy so has good quality. My only main problem is it only has 3 movie channels to stream them in 4k so u have to either have a Roku or something if u want anything else. Otherwise for 299.00 it the best 4k DVD player for the price.

A Pleasurable Experience
My final selection was this Sony UBP-X800M2 Blu-Ray Player. I researched and shopped players within this price range that would compliment my new AV Receiver and OLED Televison. I decided this unit would fit the bill for me. It has all the newest features allowing it to communicate with my other new feature rich home theater components via HDMI connectivity. It can currently stream Wi-Fi from YouTube, Netflix and Prime Video if needed although I have not performed this task as of yet. This model also came bundled with two 4K Blu-Ray Disks. The unit itself has a well built solid feel to it and has been playing my HD 4K Blu-Ray Discs beautifully as advertised with no problems detected. It's a very feature rich unit with a included remote controlling all of the usual optional features including it's pleasant onscreen menu system.

Good features but…
Been working up to today…I went to play Guardians of the galaxy #1 today and it froze (see picture) very disappointed I have been buying Sony equipment for years and only problem I had was with one of the first hi def CRT TV set’s they made 30 inch wide screen but the took good care of me and sent me an upgraded set was a new 34 inch model.
So as you can see doubt very much if they will help me out as this ultra hd Blu-ray is not cheap. :(

Great Player
I own both this model and the less expensive 700. I can say both deliver excellent images with 4K, Blu-Ray or DVD. I can't say I see any difference even with this model's "Bravia Mode" engaged. (Using a Sony 75X900F TV). In my opinion, the key differences between the two models boil down to 3 features which may or not matter depending on your planned uses. This model comes with Bluetooth and the ability to play hi-res music files. Its also much nicer looking and feels more substantial. The 700 is much smaller physically and this may be important if space is a consideration. So I don't think you can go wrong with either one. If you really just need an excellent 4K player with the ability to handle Dolby Vision and all the latest sound formats (Atmos, DTS-X) then you can save some money and go with the 700. The only negative for both players is how Dolby Vision is handled. Neither unit auto-detects Dolby Vision so you need to manually set this each time you want to see a disc with Dolby Vision and remember to turn it off after !

Not a fan
I just got a warranty replacement for the original unit purchased last November because the player would continually lock up every few weeks. The only way to correct the situation was to unplug the unit and plug it back in, a frustrating experience since Sony hard wires the cord to the player. In addition, the remote control is way too small for anything other than playing a disk. Try maneuvering around while watching streaming video and you will quickly find that the "HOME" button is too close to the down arrow, causing the player to revert to the home page due to a slight error in placing your finger. Also no visual displays on the player and the power on light is way too small. If that isn't enough, I run the player through a Yamaha audio visual center. When playing a disk, the audio was not synced with the video requiring an adjustment on the Yamaha to correct it. Hopefully, that was another fault with the original player and not a normal characteristic of the player. Bottom line, buyer beware

Great Ultra HD player spoiled by lousy remote
The UBP-X800M2 is an excellent disk player with a beautiful picture and fast loading. However, the remote control is awful: no backlight and the buttons are hard to identify in the dark. The disc player's front panel is also dark with no indication even that a disc is loaded or playing or how far along it is. To save perhaps $50, Sony left these features out, which is why I lowered my rating to three stars. This is the best and simultaneously hardest to use DVD/Blu-ray play I've ever had.

Its a very good bluray player, if you get a good one. Would have gave it 5 stars easily but it freezes once in a while and the only way to get control back is to unplug it and plug it back in. Other than that its great would recommend. But for 300 dollars it should have came without those problems.

Beautiful Picture and Sound
I own a 85" X950G so I purchased a Sony blu-ray player to take advantage of the HDMI passthrough feature and eliminate the need for a 2nd remote and that works great.
The picture quality is amazing and I've only watched standard HD blu-ray content. I plan on watching some 4k content this weeked to see what my tv/blu-ray combo is fully capable of.
It works seemlessly with my atmos capable soundbar.
So why only 2 stars?
Anytime the device is powered off for more than a couple of hours it will not power on. To make it useable again you have to unplug it from the wall outlet and plug it back in. This is unacceptable for such an expensive product.

Great...except for some big flaws
I have waited months to get this machine and was very excited to set it up yesterday. I tested several movies and the picture quality was amazing all around.
BUT, as has been mentioned by other reviewers, there is no automatic sensing of Dolby Vision content. You have to manually turn on/off DV accordingly. You then also have to know which movies are DV or not when you play them.
What was more concerning for me was the fact that the player menu started flashing off to a black screen quite frequently after performing an update and testing several movies. It would stay black long enough that it was difficult to do anything in the menu. Luckily this did not happen during movie playback but only in the menu. It was so bad though that I may have to return the product if it can't be resolved by an update.

I purchased this player in November 2019. Try to play Hacksaw Ridge in 4K disc got an error message, can not play. I put the same disk on Samsung 4K player, played just fine.
Try to play Skyscraper 4K disc, playing half way than freeze, play it on Samsung player no issue. I have the same issue playing Avengers End game, John Wick 3, and Mission Impossible Fall out. I just don't understand what is this player good for. I just wish I could take it back to the store, but it's already pass 30 days. The player is just sitting in the cabinet now collecting dust and continue using my old Samsung 4K player that playing perfectly.

Great player, very happy!
I haven’t actually upgraded to any 4K discs, but wanted the flexibility. This is a top player though, wringing every last pixel of detail out of whatever it plays. The sound is even more impressive, with all sorts of source materials. I’d recommend this machine - the only thing I’m missing is my 4K disc of Bohemian Rhapsody, that I was supposed to be able to claim having bought the player, made the mistake of registering it to my Sony account first and now don’t appear to be able to claim for the disc?! Apart from that though, top machine!

Good universal player - bad Dolby Vision function
This plays my SACDs and DVD-Audios well.
The 4k Bluray HDR output looks really good.
But the Dolby Vision on/off switch in the deep settings is bad. They player should switch to Dolby Vision when it is present like you can choose SACD two channel or multi-channel output.
But to use Dolby Vision it's either ALWAYS on and all output is encoded by the player to map to it, or you'd have to start in Dolby Vision mode , insert a disc, wait for it to play, hit the INFO button to check if the disc has Dolby Vision and if it doesn't then hit stop, then go into Settings, Display Options, Dolby Vision and switch the flag, then start the playing again to get the right output. (And you have to do this for every disc you insert.)
If there was a very easy button press on the remote to do this it *might* be acceptable - but how it's implemented now it's a deal breaker for me.

A Great machine
I have been using the Sony UBP-X800M2 for a few days, I am very happy with my purchase of this machine.
After switching on the Machine I was presented with a clean and simple start menu screen including the only three apps on there for Netflix ,Amazon Prime and You Tube.
The menu was easy to navigate and the machine was set up and running quite quickly using the remote control which for me was the right size and the controls was easy to use.
Dolby Vision is on this machine this helps to deliver sharp and stunning pictures in vibrant colours with amazing details when using the 4k discs and with 4k media on the You-Tube channel. There is an option for Blu ray 3D as of now i have not been able to try.
I love Dolby Atmos so i connected the machine to my sound bar to utilse this function, the sound was powerful, crystal clear with a rich deep bass which was delivered using the digital sound enhancement machine.
The machine is great in design with just a little green light to show it is on and is quiet running.

Best 4K player on the "mainstream" market
I've been using an Xbox 1S for my UHD disc playback, and decided to upgrade to a real player, because the Xbox kept not sensing a disc in the player, as well as not truly having Dolby Vision for movies.
I bought this player and it's not only better than the Xbox, it blows the xbox away! Picture quality is superb. Vivid color, tight blacks, and no jitters with animation. Audio is fantastic with ATMOS and my 7.1 system. Bootup is quick, disc loading is speedy, and options are fantastic. On top of that, it plays many types of frequently found video containers such as mkv files. Really is versatile.
Only two negatives are it has limited streaming apps and no auto DV/HDR10 switching. You have to have a Roku, AppleTV or smart TV if you want a lot of streaming options. You have to manually turn off DV if you want to watch a movie in HDR10.

The best disc player I have had
This is a very versatile disc player and worth noting it can play almost any type of media disc. It has two HDMI outputs, one with audio/video and one with audio only, which is handy for those wishing to use their sound system with it, for example playing a music disc. The sound quality is dynamic and clear. On 4K the HDR discs are beautifully rendered and colorful images are wonderfully vivid. DVD playback is perfectly acceptable. The disc mechanism is quiet and tray operation smooth and quiet too. There is no detectable vibration during operation. Definitely happy with this purchase. Worth noting the device can easily be connected to the internet via Wi-Fi which is handy for future software updates. I tested it out-of-the-box with the pre-installed software and have had no problems.

Really good player, and nice to see Sony still making UHD blu ray players. Excellent performance, although the odd lockup (known issue with bd-100 discs. Google it, it affects Panasonic and LG too)
The only issue, is dolby vision doesn't switch automatically. I myself and many others want this added via firmware. I love the player but others are telling people to go for the Panasonic Ub-820 just because it auto switches dolby vision automatically.
Aside from that, player runs well.

Multi-channel SACD On The Cheap!
I wanted to add multi-channel SACD capability to my Ambisonic surround sound Hi-Fi system but the price of dedicated SACD players is astronomically high. Additionally, they no longer seem to sport RCA phono output sockets for the analogue multi-channel surround sound. The Sony UBP-X800M2 player plays SACD's but again, no analogue output sockets for the surround. So, I purchased the X800M2 and added a CYP AU-11SA-4K22 (HDMI in/RCA phono analogue out up to 7.1) and the two units together are still a lot cheaper than a dedicated SACD player. The X800M2 will also play many other types of discs and is a streamer too. As a former TV engineer I can tell you the build quality is excellent too for this price range. The X800M2 player is fantastic value for money, very versatile and I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone.

Best One I Own!
I bought this over the weekend from my local Best Buy. My original LG UP970 began having malfunctions (movies stopping halfway through, mainly). I needed a replacement and discovered the X800M2 at CES 2019. This player had my attention, with support for both HDR10 and Dolby Vision (my TV doesn't support HDR10+, so idc about that). I heard that the X700 had crystal clear picture quality and viscerally bombastic audio quality, with HDR that entices. I bought it at full price (using built up store credit to get a self-made discount) and installed it right away. I tested Pacific Rim, which showcased brilliant HDR colors and clean 4K resolution, along with a thunderous and impactful Dolby Atmos sound mix. I also tested Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Black Hawk Down, The Dark Knight, and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (which, along with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, came free with the player, thanks Sony!). All of these movies displayed similar results on all fronts.
The built-in 4K upscaler is the best I've laid eyes on! This player is capable of upscaling old Blu-ray movies to near-4K resolution and the results are impressive! Avatar the first movie I tested, the movie looked as clear as most modern UHD Blu-rays! I haven't seen Avatar look this good since I watched it in IMAX! I also tested Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, which boosted similar results as Avatar (while also revealing dated CGI).
Finally, the streaming apps. Look, I have a Roku Ultra, Apple TV 4K, Fire TV Cube, Xbox One X, PS4 Pro, and Chromecast Ultra. So, I really don't care if this Blu-ray player only has Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, and YouTube, all of which is all I use anyway. I just wish that the player supported Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision on Netflix, but that's a licensing thing, so it's not a big deal for me.
Overall, this was well worth $300 for me. I now own a top-notch 4K Blu-ray player that has everything I need. Sure, the Panasonic DP-UB820 or the rather expensive DP-UB9000 are superior, but the Sony X800M2 is the best budget 4K Blu-ray player anyone can ask for.
Extra goodies:
- This player supports a wide range of video formats -> HEVC (.mkv, .mp4, .m4v, .m2ts, .mts), VP9 (.webm, .mkv), VP8 (.webm, .mkv), VP6 (.flv), MPEG-1 Video / PS (.mpg .MPEG, .mkv) [.VOB, .VRO], MPEG-2 Video / PS, TS ( .mpg.MPEG, .m2ts, .mts, .mkv) [.VOB, .VRO], MPEG-4 AVC (.mkv, .mp4, .m4v, .m2ts, .mts), MPEG-4 / AVC (.mov, 3gp, .3g2, .3gpp, .3gpp2, .flv), Xvid (.avi, .mkv), WMV9 (.wmv, .asf, .mkv), AVCHD Disc Format, VC1 (.m2ts, .mts, .mkv), Motion JPEG (.mov, .avi)
- This player also supports a wide range of audio formats -> AAC (.AAC, .mka), HEAAC v.1 / v.2 / level 2, WMA9 Standard (.WMA), LPCM (.mka, .wav), DSD - DSDIFF / DSD (.dff, .dsf), FLAC (.flac, .fla), AIFF (.aiff, .aif), ALAC (.m4a), Dolby Digital (.ac3, .mka), WMA10 Pro, Vorbis, MP3 (.mp3, .mka), AAC (.m4a), Monkey's Audio
- Can't forget it's support for various picture formats -> JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg), GIF (.gif), PNG (.png), MPO MPF 3D (.mpo), BMP (.bmp)
- Multi-Disc support -> Ultra HD Blu-ray, BD-ROM, Stereoscopic 3D (profile 5), SA-CD (SA-CD / CD) Playback, DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-R Dual Layer, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R Double Layer, CD (CD-DA), CD-R / -RW

I bought a month ago and it hasn’t played one disc fully from start to finish. It keeps juddering and freezing. Changed leads and done factory reset and running latest firmware but still not working. I’m getting another delivered on Monday and this ones getting exchanged so il review this next month when I’ve used the new one. Always bought Sony and bought this to partner my Sony KD65AG9 but this is obviously a dud do hope the new replacement does the job

Dolby Vision Fail !
Great player with the exception of Dolby Vision implementation. Navigating through multiple menus for manual DV toggle is an absolute design fail! Auto detection is needed. At minimum program one of the yellow/blue/red/green buttons to toggle.

The non plus ultra in home theater experience
Unpacking the Sony UBP-X800M2 is already an experience of its own.
While unwrapping the product you realize immediately from the weight that the produce has been built differently from every other consumer blu-ray players. Solid and well constructed. The Audio and video experience is of another planet. Vibrant colors and deep contrast, crystal clear sound and full bass make the UBP-X800M2 the non plus ultra in high end audio/video products.

Amazing
Had this a little while now and still getting to grips with everything it can do, however, so far so amazingly good.
Firstly the picture quality of my (mostly old) DVDs has suddenly renewed my pleasure at seeing my favourite DVDs like they were Blu-rays. This in itself is a huge bonus, one that makes the cost of this player worthwhile and yet on top of that, the even better picture quality of my Blu-rays (and the sound is far better too) blows me away. AND I have not yet mentioned 4K - all I will say is that until you see it you won't believe the difference.
OK so I have a new Sony 4K TV so it was 'necessary' for the player upgrade, but in all honesty I was not expecting such a huge quality increase. Wow!
At this time of needing to self isolate my wife and I are watching a lot more television so I am patting myself on the back for getting the new tv and player at just the right time. In all honesty, I do believe I am enjoying my favourite films more now than ever before. Thank you Sony.

Stunning Image and Sound
I already had a 4K UHD but wanted a Sony to match my TV. The UBP-X800M2 was really the only sensible choice to utilise and release my Sony TV's performance potential.
The colours just pop and the depth of the blacks is stunning. If you thought that your DVD's, BluRay's and UHD BluRay's are stunning on your current player then prepare to be amazed. This player will bring them to life, properly.
Then there's the audio. A movie is nothing without is soundtrack and again this player doesn't disappoint. It handles most audio formats but it's really 'on song' when handling Dolby audio formats, Atmos sounds amazing with my Sony soundbar. I have started to ask, "why go to the cinema?"
Some have commented on the UBP-X800M2's streaming abilities. It has Netflix, Prime and YouTube apps built in, but are you really buying this player as a streaming device? Not really. You're buying it for is ability to play your disks the way that they were meant to be seen, sharp, full of depth and with a rich soundtrack.
I've had 4k UHD from other manufacturers; Panasonic and LG, but have found my 'soul mate' in this player.
Would I recommend this player? Yes absolutely.
Now I'm off to rediscover some old movies and the life I never knew they had in them.

sony boycott
I was deciding between a new 4k tv and player for a great room I had just added to my house when my old Sony player discontinued supporting a streaming service that is still available on another brand. Any company that sells you on a products capability and later changes what it can do does not instill a desire to use the company. I am now boycotting sony for all future business.

So far so great
Razor sharp picture and movie theater sound. Fast [very fast] menu navigation and response. Finds and joins network within 30 seconds. I have never seen such a terrific picture. None of the grain that sometimes accompanied 1080p Blu-ray movies. I also like that it connects to my sound system via Bluetooth or ARC, your choice. The unit is heavy, well built, and runs cool and quiet. Best picture quality over streaming, easily. This player takes the 4K experience to the utmost level. Way to go Sony !

Awesome Player
I bought this player at Best Buy a month ago. It looks great, you know like an actual AV component and not a plastic piece of junk. The build quality is excellent. The picture and sound are awesome! I play discs, so I really don’t care one bit about streaming. Those complaining about not having their favorite streaming site app available, you just learned a valuable lesson... Buy the disc! If you don’t see your streaming app, buy a fire stick and use the USB port. My only complaint is that there is no display (a very minor complaint). This is a great player for the money!

Player freezes when playing 4K disks
I regret not having done more research on this player, for if I had one so I would have learned that the unit has a history of freezing when playing 4K disks. I learned the hard way that it often freezes about 3/4 of the way through the movie and there is no firmware update for this player.
All I can say is that it is a disappointment and a waste of money. I was looking forward to replace my 1080P Blu Ray disks with 4K versions of the same, but now I don't see that as a wise idea.

Great if you use gaming headphones
One of the problems I experience is that it seem like the only devices that can do either DTS-> Dolby or Dolby-> DTS conversions are gaming consoles. If you’re going for a 4k console, your only choices are either an Xbox One S if you don’t care about 4K gaming or an Xbox One X if you do. Playstation 4 has no 4K player on it, not even the pro model.
Dad insisted on getting a Sony for the front room. Our previous LG 3D BD player broke down. Dad saw a sale on the Sony UBP-X800.
For a while it was a good player. We have the ability to play 4k discs, but we don’t have a 4K TV yet. We could ply 3D discs, but since no one makes either a 4K 3D TV or a device which can turn any TV into A 3D TV, we’re just "futureproofing" and "pastproofing".
Then I read an interesting article on a Sonos Soundbar website, which was referred to me by my surround headphone manufacturer, Turtle Beach. Sonos owners have been complaining that their DTS Blu Rays being silent for many years.
Apparently nothing Sonos, and nothing Turtle Beach, even the new DTS X: Headphone headphones can accurately can give if DTS sound unless it relies on a external DTS-> Dolby converter, which is typically found in PS3s, PS4s, (if one wanted to watch HD DVDs, Xbox 360s) and all Xbox Ones, especially the One Ses and One Xes for 4K movies.
Someone said there were 2 good brands of TVs and one good brand of Disc player, if you define good as one that can covert DTS to Dolby, the Disc player brand and one of the 2 TV brands was almost ANY Sony.
So I looked for a setting. Look at the setting "downmix". The only 2 settings are "stereo" and "Surround" I notice no sound gets through on my Turtle Beaches if set on Stereo, which you have to connect to the Coaxial out and then through a Coaxial ->Toslink converter. But change it to surround, and a whole new world opens up. The lower text description mentions Dolby Digital, so I gave it a try. I checked a Blu Ray, made sure it said DTS, tried it, and I got surround sound. And with headphones 5.1 is all you need for 3D direction, because that’s all Toslink can deliver.
If you live in a media room which is in no way symmetrical or accousitcally balanced, you’ll have a hard time with "communal speakers". Turtle Beach (and possibly other brands, I don’t know) offer pinpoint accurate sound gamers rely on to get directional and distance cues in first person shooters. They are in situations where hearing something can be a matter of virtual life or death. If they trust surround headphones, shouldn’t you?
Turns out the effect livens movies more too. It also made me more stereophonically aware when tracking down a lost cell phone or a cat puke noise. The only caveat is those DTS movies which about 60-65% of my Blu Rays are in. I was going to try to convince dad to dump this and buy a second Xbox One S, but as it turns out, the setting was already built in. You just had to know where to find it.
Ironically, LG does in the OTHER direction, converting Dolby into DTS for DTS-exclusive equipment. Now I’ll watch movies upstairs with dad if I don't feel in a 3D mood.
By the way Sony, there is a way to revive the 3D movie/TV industry. it’s a 2 part plan. One make a 3D decoder that is independent of the TV. Sony was a champion of Shutter-based 3D, and Sega proved you can turn any TV into a shutter-based 3D TV, just look at the Master System Sega Scope 3D. So if Sega can turn any TV into a 3d TV using pre-1990 tech, then the patent should be expired. Also you don’t have to buy a new TV to make it 3D, or you can buy any size, any make, any resolution, any aspect ratio, any color depth TV into a 3D TV, or use an existing one. Have the model of 3D TV decoder bet like adding surround sound to movies, a nice little extra, but not strictly required, and totally independent of your screen choice
The other secret is to make 2D/3D combo discs, where the 2D presentation is just the left eye half of a stereoscopic image. Even 4K discs can be made 2D/3D combo. And if you want to encourage 3DTV, make it so that it’s 2D compatible, unlike Super Bowl 2013, which people complained that they can’t watch the Super Bowl if it was only in 3D. If you can encode a Dolby 5.1 soundtrack, closed captions, and alternate language in a TV/Cable/Satellite broadcast on ATSC 1, then with ATSC 2.0, why can you encode right eye views that are invisible to ATSC 1 but decodable in ATSC 2? If you can do 120 Hz, but no one films in 120 Hz, then you can make 120 Hz mode into a 60 Hz x 2 Eye mode. Some people can get along with 30 Hz, so a 30 Hz x 2 Eye mode would be good too. Heck decent-TV quality animation is 12-15 Hz. I notice no choppiness in Kim Possible, but I frame-by-framed it to 2 stills on one image, or 15 Hz assuming 30 Hz NTSC satellite broadcast back in 2004.
You don’t hear fuddy duddy people complain that they have to pay more for 5.1 surround, or feel they pay for Atmos / DTS:X, yet people actively avoid 3D because of the extra disc. If discs were designed 2D/3D combo, it’d be always there if you need it, and hidden when not. And there’d be more 3D copies because they are not differentiated by 2D and 3D SKUs, and 4K has more room so it can incorporate the hidden right eye as a feature in a 4K 2D/ 4K 3D combo disc. Just like Blu Rays can accommodate 2-track stereo TVs, and DVDs mono TVs
And stereoscopy of "real world" things is so easy, just put a dual lens and record both halves in a synched format. at a fixed distance and parallel angle. As a matter of fact Side by Side Half is a 3D VIDEO EDITING format that doesn’t require a special editor... as long as you don’t want to add effects or play with the stereoscopy, in other words, just doing "real life" things.

This is an excellent player with great picture and sound quality. My big problem is the fact that the DVD function isn’t multi region which the technical specs appear to indicate it would be. Dolby Vision Implementation
Bought this 2 days ago and considering replacing it with the more costly Panasonic UB820 mainly due to a major design flaw by Sony...AGAIN. Dolby Vision is not auto detected by the player, and as such, must be turned on to view a DV disc, and turned off once finished. This is an inconvenience most people who care about picture quality cannot overlook. Those that don't care will watch all 4K disc via HDR10 format. Seriously need update to correct if that is possible, but for me, I'm moving on.

The item arrived in sturdy packaging. I would have preferred that the internal packaging was recyclable. The item was easily set-up with good documentation clear instructions. I was pleased that the unit could be connected to my network and the ability to do it wirelessly was a real bonus. The ability to connect to YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Prime is a useful addition.
The menus are easy to navigate and the remote worked well. DVDs and Blue Rays played on the unit and the image and sound quality are very high.
This unit is well engineered and good value considering the high specification.

Much improved on the X800M
I’m loyal you Sony and over the years have had many products from them. I’m in my 5th TV and umpteenth Blu-Ray player. My four year old XM800 inexplicably packed up and wouldn’t switch on, which seems to be a common trait with Sony Blu-Ray players. I replaced it with the X800M2.
Overall, I’m much happier. It feels less clunky, faster and smoother to load up discs, more responsive, has a much better UI, amazing audio and picture, and offers Dolby Vision. The only issue I have with it is the silly nonsensical way in which you have to enable / disable DV dependent on the 4K discs that is being played. That is, if DV is enabled and the disc is not DV, it plays it in DV regardless and looks terrible. So it’s a bit of a faff and seems like a crazy user unfriendly way to enable DV. Other than that, this is far better than the previous model.

Great for bluray but struggles on SACD disks
I chose this particular model based on great reviews and compatibility with SACDs. However, some SACDs do not play, especially the Dire Straights' Brothers in Arms disk. I've yet to find a solution to this.
Please note, there is no display on the unit, just a power light
So, for anything other than SACD, I would recommend this unit.

Rip Off
The Sony UBP-X800M2 4K UHD Blu-ray Player is a good well engineered piece of kit. It is silent in operation and has played all types of discs that I own ranging form DVD's, Blu ray, 4K Blu ray, 3D Blu ray, CD's and SACD. I have some DVD audio discs but have not yet tried these. I would certainly recommend buying this player. On first switch on of the device and connecting to the Internet, it automatically updates its firmware. Once connected to your network, you can then, should you wish, stream other devices through it (I do not as I stream other devices through an AV receiver). The picture is as good as I have seen from a player.
So why only three stars and a rip off. The player was advertised on Amazon sold by a third party company - TPS - and shows an accompanying 4K DVD, Bohemian Rhapsody. However it is only on receiving the player that you find you have to log into to Sony for the DVD to be sent to you. There are some terms and conditions, none of which are shown on the Amazon site and you can only see them by logging into the Sony site given on the leaflet in the player packaging. On sending away for the DVD I was returned an email from Sony stating
"Thank you for sending us documents with regards to your purchase. After validation we have noticed that
you have purchased from 3rd party dealer on Amazon.
Based on this information your participation is unfortunately no longer valid. "
This despite TPS being listed in their website where you request the DVD be sent.
Whilst I did not specifically buy the player for the DVD, it certainly leaves a sour taste to the purchase which is a shame because as I stated earlier in the review, the player is a good piece of kit. So whilst I can recommend the player, be aware you might not get the accompanying DVD depending on where you purchase it. This does seem somewhat penny pinching on Sony's part, bearing in mind this is DVD costing £25 if bought separately on a DVD player costing £350.

Big improvement over an Xbox as a UHD player!
If you’ve been relying on your Xbox ad your UHD disc player, this Sony is a huge improvement in picture quality. The Sony adds Dolby Vision, and then overall the Sony outputs the picture with more sharpness and clarity and less film grain it appears. The film grain is still present in the source material, but less noticeable, with the picture having a cleaner look.
Sony player also operates faster than the Xbox and is whisper quiet.
If you’re the type to still buy UHD blu rays, then go that last mile and ditch the PS or Xbox and get a stand-alone player like this Sony.
Only downside is the Netflix app on the Sony doesn’t output Atmos, and in general doesn’t have any other streaming apps on it aside from YouTube. As a disc player though it’s a 4.5/5.
Highly recommended. So good I took the time to write a review.

Great disc spinner.
Bought a month or so ago and extremely happy with the build and disc playback quality which is all I bought it for. Cannot fault picture and sound quality of 4K and standard bluray discs and that's coming from an Oppo 203 owner.
Only given four stars as one or two areas that could be improved.
1) Ability to auto detect and switch between HDR and Dolby Vision.
2) Atmos/DTS X pass-through not available on files played via attached HDD's.This is not a major issue for me as I have a separate player used for files which does this.
3) The flappy cover over the USB slot is cheap and nasty compared to the rest of the machine. A USB slot on the rear would be good.
4) I don't use the apps but the availability could be more for those who intend to use them.
Despite the minor improvement points if you are looking for solid build quality and disc play back this unit is highly recommended.

Excellent DVD, Blu-Ray, 4k Blu-Ray player.
I upgraded from a Samsung Blu-Ray player that I'd had for probably ten years, WoW! What a difference in the picture quality, even my standard DVD's look much much better. Im guessing the upscaling software for standard DVD's in the Sony is much better than my old Samsung because all my standard definition DVD's look great now. Dune in 1080p Blu-Ray played on this Sony looks amazing! 4k Harry Potter is stunning and the audio on the 4k discs is incredible. By this player then watch all your movies again and see what you've been missing.

The software feels dated
My experience with Sony has typically been that they make good hardware, but mediocre software. The same is true with this Blu-ray player... and it manifests itself in the controller design.
Dated Controller Design
The usability of the controller feels like it's 20 years old when compared to the usability of the Apple TV controller.
- My biggest complaint is the placement of the stop button. Why is it so close to frequently used controls? Do you know how annoying it is to press stop when the UHD Blu-ray from Paramount doesn't know how to resume the movie and you are forced to sit multiple screens before you can search your way to the place your were at? And what exactly is the difference between the Stop button and the Home button? Why do we even need the stop button?
- If you press Pause and then Fast-Forward, you step through the frames... but if you press Pause then Rewind, you Rewind... how does that make sense?
- Having to cycle through 24 different subtitles in order to turn it off because you pressed it accidentally - that's 20 year old stuff. The Subtitles button should open/close a menu on the screen with all the subtitle choices. This is not the same as the popup-menu, which opens the entire main menu. The same goes for the Audio button.
- A dedicated Netflix button also feels like it's 20 years old. In players that support multiple tasks (disc or streaming), a task switching button/function (like on cell phones) is a better idea.
Odd Default Settings
- Why is Playback Options/Picture Quality Mode not set to "Direct" by default? Playback Options is a "hidden" menu that is available only during playback. The default setting applies Noise Reduction, which removes the sharpness of Blu-rays.
- Why is Audio Settings/BD Secondary Audio not set to "On" by default. Some Blu-rays apparently use that for the soundtrack. If this is disabled, the menu will have sound, but the movie will be completely silent. I can't imagine a usage scenario for this feature, let alone for it to be the default setting.

I bought this to upgrade my theater room to 4k. The image is good and it loads quickly, but why won't Sony fix the Dolby Vision setting to auto?!!! I have read many complaints about this and no one from Sony deals with this issue. If it was noted on the package I would not have purchased it. Seems like a simple fix!

The image quality is as brilliant as before, and the system a lot easier to use.

Almost Perfect
This player is physically built to a very high standard. However, it is not without issues. For example. The machine routinely freezes and requires rebooting which can be very frustrating. But, When it plays a movie throughout the experience is fantastic. This machine is also superb for its audio output and support, which I often run-through a very decent amp. I very much hope the firmware continues to update to improve upon and reduce or prevent the freezing, assuming that it is in-fact a software bug as opposed to a temperature issue as this does not seem to be an issue when tested. Although I have made extra efforts to prevent any potential overheating as a precaution. I keep the machine well ventilated and elevated with some larger rubber feet underneath the chassis to increase airflow. I believe the freezing is most likely linked to the onboard network controller but it difficult to say for certain as the freezing is intermittent and without an obvious consistent cause. Finally it would be phenomenal if Sony added Spotify and Tidal support as this machine would then do it all in my humble opinion and for the money be tough product to beat. So iron out the kinks please Sony as this machine is well worth the effort for all to enjoy and not just the loaded audiophiles.
Almost perfect for the money!

Excellent play-any-disc machine
I started looking for a disc player initially to act as a CD player in my home set up, then realised that this plays everything. I've used my PS5 as a UHD player occasionally but this player seems far better for handling discs (it's played through some that have stuttered on the PS5), is quieter and looks great in my front room. It does a great job on sound and the picture is great on both 4k and 1080p discs.
Having had a period where I thought streaming was the future, I now appreciate the better quality of a physical disc and can see 4k UHD becoming like vinyl is for audiophiles - something you do when the film warrants the investment and you want the best quality possible (and to know it won't be removed for any reason!).
The UBP-X800M2 is a great addition to my set up and I would recommend it to anyone looking to take full advantage of their TV and home cinema set up.

Almost Perfect
Had this almost 6 months now and no problems (touch wood)!
To sum it up in three words, slow, slick and silent.
For 4K discs I have to say its a little sluggish for load times - but only 4K discs (which I guess you could argue is the main point of having it) Obviously there is a huge amount more data on a 4K UHD disc compared to a Blu Ray disc, but pop a Blu Ray inside and it's rapid. Scene selections are instant. Upscaling fantastic too.
I'm not going to review picture quality (although mine is simply outstanding) as it will depend on what television you have.
I cannot get over how silent this machine is - I don't think I've ever heard it.
Audio features are excellent, I also use mine for CD's. Interface is a little bog-standard, but simple and concise. The unit had a great weight and size - and even sits under my bravia - not in the telly stand. It looks so slick too, remote simple.
All in all, I wish it was a little nippier for 4K discs loading times and to turn off can take a while, but this isn't enough to knock it down a star.
5/5!

Great universal player
Had some problems with the sound on HDMI2, a factory reset to the sound helped. Plays everything you through at it with great sound, use it for SACD, DVD and 5.1 BD discs. Don't recognise HDCD though, but of course plays the disc. Miss the display, you need the TV on. You have to adjust the setting to get the best sound, but then it performs very well.
Not many universal players around like this - and to a decent price.

Excellent player but with one major flaw
I have this player as well as its predecessor, the original UBP-X800.
It plays movies, CD's and SACD discs beautifully. It does not have as many apps as its predecessor but that is irrelevant as every app I need is on my Sony 930E Android TV.
The M2 has the same excellent build quality as its predecessor.
I bought this player for one reason: to add Dolby Vision. And that is the rub. Sony added Dolby Vision to its 930E series televisions and I wanted a play to match so I had that option. The Sony TV readily switches from HDR10 to Dolby Vision depending on content. Unfortunately the X800M2 does not. You manually have to switch the player from one format to the other. While I have heard many technical and operational explanations of why this player does not yet do auto switching I don't understand why Sony cannot incorporate that feature into this player.
Hopefully Sony will release a firmware update that enables auto switching between HDR10 and Dolby Vision, both for this player and the previously released UBP-X700,
Meanwhile I am enjoying everything in HDR10. I could go to the bother of manually switching formats. My wife? No way! So, the new M2 is connected to my 930E and the original X800 to my Sony 900E. I love the player but will love it more if Sony updates it to auto format switching.

HurryupandFreeze
I just bought this unit brand new, full price. Played brand new movie purchased at same time, Invisible Man. Movie froze @ ~1:35 in. Took 4 minutes for unit to respond. I was replacing the worlds first 4k player, Samsung UBD-K8500, only because I wanted to play my SACDs. My Samsung has NEVER froze, EVER...! I was so impressed with the packaging and build quality. Only for it all to be ruined by a freeze at an extreme climax of a movie. Unreal...

Quality DVD Player and easy to install and set up
I bough this DVD player to match my new Sony BraviaX85L 55" Smart TV.
I was so impressed with the TV picture quality I wanted to get a 4K HDR DVD Blu-ray player to deliver a similar high quality viewing experience.
The obvious choice was from Sony and this machine does not disappoint.
Heavier than expected, solid and oozes build quality even by just opening the box.
Slim and good looking design sits nicely on the stand below my Sony TV.
Very simple to set up (HDMI and Power Cable) and the simple on screen set up process got me connected to WiFi and ready to play in no time at all. It comes with the capability to play discs, USB devices, streaming and playing files (connecting to a Home Network) and listening to audio through a blue tooth device. Very quick and easy to set up and go.

Great design and video quality but chassis twisted
First off – I love the player's video quality and design and would definitely recommend it to others. However, there is one thing that bothers me a little – I have purchased three of these so far, two used and one new from a very reputable authorized Sony dealer, and none of them sat flat on a perfectly flat, even surface.
With the used ones I assumed that it was because of shipping damage and sent them back, however, the brand new one, which was double-boxed and came sealed in a glossy Sony box that had zero damage and not even a single dent or scuff on the outside, had the same issue. It goes without saying that I have tried multiple flat surfaces – first the TV console, then coffee table, and finally a side table with a glass top. The glass top is definitely perfectly flat, and I tried it just in case the wooden tops are not. On all of those surfaces my brand-new X800M2 rocks a little. A 1/64" thick piece of electrical tape under one of the feet will fix this, but I feel like I should not have to do this.
If this is a manufacturing issue and the chassis cannot be made perfectly flat, one of the feet simply has to be made adjustable the way furniture makers do it. Actually, Apple had the same issue with their latest iPad Pro, which also arrived to some people slightly twisted, and Apple's response was that it is impossible to make them perfectly flat. I suspect that the same is true of Sony's Blu-ray player frames.
Based on my web searches, others have noticed this issue as well, although from what I see it is not a common complaint.
Again, this is not a deal-breaker to me, just something to be aware of. If the player is unsteady, it can start skipping due to vibrations from the subwoofer, speakers, and people walking by.
Sony –
Is this normal?

Plays all my discs and is a good renderer
The UBP-X800M2 is a good looking, well built compact player and streamer. I found it easy to set up and connect via 2.1 HDMI and Ethernet wired connection to a Netgear switch. I have a Sony Bravia 55" 4K TV so the smart link works a treat and also operates the Yamaha AV Receiver. One of my fave functions is the Hi-Re Audio this works on all discs and streamed media from my server. I have successfully played 4K/1080p/3D Blu-ray, CD, DVD Video, DVD Audio & SACD Discs the upscaling working well on the older media. I use the Plex & PS3 servers to deliver home network media to the UBP-X800M2, it could be a little quicker when it comes to navigation but it's more than adequate. The only audio codec it does not play for me is EAC3 5.1 I have not researched this as yet. Here again the player upscales MP3/Flac beautifully. As with all quality Sony video equipment the colours are natural and deep, 24p setting is lovely having a true cinema look and the sound is epic! I could go on but the player does what it says on the box.
Only two small reservations though. BBC iPlayer is a glaring omission and a Gigabit network connection would have been nice. One last thought does anyone remember the Betamax C6 press advert back in the early 80's? 'So simple a cat could use it'? well with its power button being on the right hand corner of the machine and being very easy to press our two black cats have learnt how to switch it and my entire system (smartlink) on but they have not figured out how to navigate to the nature programs yet.

Wanted to love this but cannot
Solid well built plays discs quietly. But the awkward manual turning on and off Dolby vision is just ridiculous and cumbersome (come on Sony). Very few streaming apps compared with other pastsony disc players. No atmos either on Netflix or prime as compared to other players. Haven’t played many discs yet but so far good. Long as there are no freeze up as in past Sony uhd players. but based on this ridiculous lack of auto Dolby vision I might be returning it. Appreciate the two free discs but a choice would have been preferred.

Sony really missed their mark on this one. Without auto detect of DV content, it will be going back. Really disappointing as the rest of the features could make this my go to player. Great new tech but sadly lacking high end features
While a great 4k player, well styled and loos amazing. Zero noise when spinning a disk.
What has happened to premium players..?
It's nicely built compared to lots of lower down models but the remote is the most cheap and basic remote I have ever seen on a 300 pound product.
It's like a firestick or now tv remote, we don't all want to just press play.
How can I get to track 20 on a cd..?
Hitting fast forward 20 times...
What if an mp3 disk with 100s on...?
Also Sony dvd players used to have great features, use dvd image when paused, store dvd image as permemant logo, controls on the front, jog shuttle frame by frame advance options.
No angle button, no pure direct mode button.
Can't do any of that any longer, isn't tech supposed to improve.. Why have these features vanished..?
Sometimes I wish I still my old 725 dvd player.
Might have to dust of my 900 and use that for my sacds, at least I can directly get to track 20.

Beautiful Machine
There is so much to tell you about this player. The first thing you notice about the player is its weight. It is a proper heavy player at 3kg that’s a whopping 8lbs. The players weight may be explained by the premium chassis it uses to reduce micro vibrations.
It is a full size machine and it’s width fills the shelf it’s resting on. It is however much slimmer than my old machine. One slight annoyance I find with the fixed cable and moulded UK plug. As I am using an oak tv cabinet the plug would not go through the port in the back of the unit. I would have preferred a detachable lead. That aside, Sony has done a great job of mixing materials that give the player a High end feel and appearance. I particularly like its sharp corners and rectangular shape that will integrate well with the most expensive audiophile systems and the plastics used have a metallic feel.
Setup is quick and easy and mine has the latest firmware installed. I chose WI-FI connectivity over LAN and the player supports 2.4 & 5GHz. I couldn’t get WPS to work and lost patience with it.Probably finger trouble but I couldn’t get it to accept my password first go either and it connected to the adjacent router at 2.4GHZ by default when it did?
The Sony boasts a myriad of hi res sound and picture specifications (not photo cd’s) in its resume. There is a dedicated HDMI sound port and with the latest Bluetooth connectivity (LDAC) works well with Bluetooth headphones. I opted for a Bluetooth speaker to pair it, this had no lip sync issues although it can be tweaked in the settings if necessary. I then tried a 5:1 sound bar via HDMI. Sound quality is excellent for both music and movies and could only be bettered had I got an Atmos setup (this is on my Christmas list).
On the subject of ports aside from HDMI the only other connectivity is Coax SPDIF (for none HDMI amplifiers) with very little by way of instruction for the latter contained in the operating manual? The specifications too are a little vague. I eventually found the HDMI port is 2.0a for HDR and supports BT.2020 colour palette. The front cover hides the one and only USB port and Is horrible. I do not like this design; make proper hinges Sony!
Spinning a 4k disc takes around 10 seconds to load but unlike my old player operation is totally silent perhaps due to the metal chassis. In fact the Sony is so quiet had it not been for the tiny led in the corner of the box one might be forgiven for thinking it had stopped working when not in playback mode?
The remote is simplistic and matches the shape of the player with its straight lines and square angles. I particularly like the fact in can be just used! It is intuitive unlike my complex old player where I have to study every function. It has a Netflix button. Netflix is one of a very limited number of preinstalled apps on the very minimalist menu. There is also a programmable function via a heart button and the tv can be operated by the remote. My tv turns on and off when controlled by the player despite not being a Sony tv.
On the subject of apps I have a number of movies stored on Sony Pictures servers, wouldn’t it be great to see a native app to play them back?
Dolby Vision is breathtakingly good, although the function is not turned on by default and I think it stays on and has to be toggled off? Deep blacks and vibrant colours are eminent with no signs of artifacts, colour bleed and smooth motion without the dreaded soap opera effect.

Excellent Player at this Price Point !!
Having, the predecessor UBP-X800 for nearly 3 years (without incident,) and also having enjoyed it's "rock solid" performance & construction, I didn't hesitate to purchase the new UBP-X800M2, as my new (Sony) television supported Dolby Vision - a format which I'm convincned will become increasingly dominant in the years to come. So many have "lauded" this product already, among the reviews, that I'll skip parroting those same glaring reviews. I will be brief, and only say, that unless you absolutely require the enhanced connectivity associated with Sony's equally terrific "ES" equivalent, I can assure you that acquiring an "800M2," and integrating into your A/V system will, in fact, be one of the best decisions that you can possibly make - dollar for dollar, they are unbeatable !!

Goodbye streaming, hello optical media!
A few years back, I decided that streaming services were just as good as getting a disc...Until 4K came along. I was never fully convinced that 4K streaming was giving me everything. So I finally picked myself up one of these along with the Batman Trilogy in 4K, OFT! The sound and picture this unit produces in comparison to my streaming version of Batman Begins VS the 4K disc version of Batman Begins.....there's no comparison, the disc wins. Sound, there's so much detail this produces, even without having ATMOS just wow. I'm utilising the HDMI Audio Out into my DN860
Whisper silent too, nippy interface in comparison to their other normal Blu-ray players. Super happy and can't wait to build the 4K disc collection.
I love the design of the unit too, personally I like the boxy feel of some of the Sony kit. This fits quite nicely on the Hi-Res shelf :)
Super happy! Just need you guys to bring out a replacement for the 1080 AV Receiver.....

Great picture and sound and very easy to setup and use but my one minor gripe is the on TV screen menu which is basic. Most people would prefer this but I prefer a bigger expanded menu. Foor me, it is easier to navigate.

Skips
For the moment, wanted to just use it to play audio CDs. Skips within every song. On every CD. Had to plug in my teenage daughter's cheap, portable kareoke machine for no-problem results. Also, there's no front panel display to indicate what is going on. I guess this is supposed to be progress. What a disappointment.

Almost there Sony!!
Not gonna go into the details of the player, only what it’s missing.
1) This player cannot automatically detect between HDR10 and Dolby Vision discs. You have to manually turn Dolby Vision on when watching a DV movie then turn it off when not (unless what you want incorrect color mapping).
2) Also lacks HDR10+. I know that only a handful of movies have this HDR format, but i own 2 of them and would like to watch them as intended.
I truly hope Sony can patch one or both of these and if so, it gets a perfect 5 from me!

Dolby Vision still not fixed?
The average consumer will not adopt DV if cant automatically be detected like every other consumer media sold. This unit has great potential but needs auto detect DV and access to more APPs, it should have more not less than the x700. Also where is the update to fix the sound field switching issue on the STRDN 1080?

No Auto Dolby Vision detection or Vudu app
This is a great 4K player but missing Dolby Vision auto detection and a 4K DV Vudu app makes this player barely better than my previous UBP-X800.....Sony needs a firmware update to add these two items as well as throwing in atmos for netflix and vudu if added, then this player would be a solid 5 stars.

Excellent but Dolby Vision needs an update
This is an excellent player, video and audio quality are absolutely outstanding.
Dolby Vision implementation is lacking, and I hope can be updated in a future firmware update: there is no way to select "auto" for Dolby Vision: if it's enabled, every disc (even if SDR / HDR10) will be played as Dolby Vision with wrong colors. So, the only way is to MANUALLY enable and disable Dolby Vision for each disc.
That is the only issue preventing a 5 stars rating.

Needs an update
Splendid look and excellent build quality. Very good picture and sound from BD and Netflix.
However there are three problems:
1) Dolby Vision doesn't activate automatically. Must be turned off manually each time you are watching a non DV movie.
2) Does not support Dolby Digital Plus (eac3 codec) when watching movies through USB hard disc.
3) Moving through the Netflix menu is very slow compared to my LG TV or laptop.
I hope Sony solve these issues with a firmware update.

Sony X800M2 -- Poor Dolby Vision implementation
Sony's implementation of Dolby Vision on this player is terrible. Requiring manual switching to/from Dolby Vision, and outputting everything in DV when switched on, creates an extremely cumbersome interface. I own the original X800, but returned the X800M2 and bought a Panasonic UB820 due to this poor implementation. Every other manufacturer automatically senses if a Dolby Vision signal is present and turns the processing on automatically, and then turns it off again afterwards.

Fantastic 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player!
I bought the Sony UBP-X800 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player after doing some research and reading some rave reviews. I also looked at a few other players before I decided on ordering it from Amazon.
Compared to some other players the Sony is built like a tank! The build quality is fantastic, it feels strong, solid with some weight about it and feels like it’s going to last a long time!
I tested it with my Samsung UE55JU6500K and watched The Martian extended edition 4K Ultra HD and was not disappointed! The Sony operates quickly and silently and the picture quality is fantastically detailed and crisp! It’s jaw-dropping in fact!
For £279 it represents fantastic value for money! The build quality is amazing and the picture quality, sound, smooth & silent operation will not disappoint you!

Quality picture and excellent sound options
The picture quality is excellent. I already new that getting Dolby Vision out was not automatic and required menu changes so that did not bother me.
The unit will output Video on one HDMI and Sound on another which was part of the reason I bought this unit so I could send 4K to my TV directly and sound to my AV amp which does not support HDR etc.
The excellent sound quality was also a reason for the purchase.
Sound can also be sent by Bluetooth to headphones.
I have tried the Netflix and Youtube apps which work fine, but its easier to use the TV ones. (LG48CX)
The unit will see a network drive (Buffalo) I have but not the HUMAX set-top box server, I don't need this to work but be aware if you do.
The unit also happily plays MP4 from USB. I cannot tell the difference if I play them on the TV or via the SONY quality is excellent on both, whether upscaling with the Sony or not.
The onscreen information is adequate but its implementation is lacking. There are multiple options (maybe 9) for the on screen info but I can only see 2 that make any difference.
CD's and BLU-RAYs play flawlessly, unfortunately 4K Blu-rays almost always stop after 1-1.5 hours. This appears to be a common fault. The film will resume but it is annoying and sometimes requires a full restart; when I have tried all the problem solving options if none work I will be requesting a replacement or repair. Without this fault the unit gets 4.5.

Rattle rattle thunder clatter boom boom boom
This machine, packed with so many features, is supposed to more than sit in the rack and spin. DVD, BD or BD UHD my ability to watch a disk is a crapshoot. Sometimes from the beginning, sometimes during the movie (embarrassing having so many of your products racked) it just spins making noise. It may come out of it or sometimes I have to do a cold reboot.
I am floored this hasn't been annotated by the individuals leaving recommendations. It doesn't meet the quality standard I am used to in Sony. Every one but one other of my Sony components work until they die years and years after racked or are given to a family member. The UBP-X800 Mark 2 has been a complete let down, especially with guests. Until now since the eighties and my VHS, SACD table, tape deck and Walk/Watchman(s) I have run only Sony and Polk. I am at a loss as to what I'll do with this thing. Had to break out my BDP-S5100.

Excellent with a reservation
Excellent machine - great audio/visual quality. However, I bought this as a source for my home cinema projector (Sony) and would have appreciated access to subscription services and, such as, TV catch-up apps. All it has are Netflix and Amazon Prime. I appreciate that if connected to a TV, such would probably no be necessary but my projector does not have any apps installed. Older machines were better in this respect - I would like to know why.

Canadian Model Loses Features
Based upon the US reviews and unboxing videos, I was disappointed to find no bonus 4k discs, and a paucity of streaming services. There is no logical reason to remove Amazon Prime from the CDN product, and this was a failing with the original X800 model. Come on Sony - my other TV has Prime! Anyway, other reviewers have commented upon the lack of automatic switching for Dolby Vision (my X700 shares this issue) but this is not a concern for me as my projector is not HDR compatible. So far I have experienced no playback issues or lockups (the M1 was a problem). The new interface is an improvement. It's just rather empty!

This is an excellent product
Robust chassis fantastic picture and sound with Dolby vision. Personally going to the setting to start a Dolby vision disk isn't an issue for me. The player does respond to all needs, including 3D , but then like others you stop making 3D 4k televisions for those of us who bought 3D movies in addition to 4k bluays with Dolby vision. Then, people like us are going to think twice about buying a new television .
This, the X800M2, is without doubt a really top drawer
player. Now let us have inclusion of 3D again on your latest TVs, so we can use it to the full.

Disappointed in this 4k/blu-ray player..
Bought this 2 weeks ago along with 3 movies. One i. Ultra 4k, one blue ray movie and one regular DVD. From the moment I turned it on and placed the 4k movie in the trouble began. It froze! I could not even turn the player off. I had to in plug it and then plug it back in just to eject the disc.
When the Blu-ray was put in, it loaded but 10 min into the movie it stopped and gave me a black screen and 3 min later it restarted at the beginning. This was very frustrating. The regular DVD movie would not even load up. The tray would go in halfway and stop. The eject button did not work and I had to pull the tray out the rest of the way. I then put the movies away and packed it all up in its original box and took it back to where I bought it. They did not have any in stock but did find one at another store and will be delivered in a few days. Seeing these reviews and from what i have experienced with this product, I will not advise ANYONE to buy this product.
I have a feeling that this replacement im getting will do the same thing...

The other reviewers are correct, this product is non-functional. Within 30 seconds of playing several brand new discs it would lock up. Good picture quality
This was an upgrade to take advantage of the Dolby Atmos and HDR features on my new oled TV. I already have the mark 1 version of this player which is brilliant, not sure what I expected but for all intensive purposes, it's no different, looks identical, features are the same apart from the apps menu is a bit cheap looking compared to the older version and the picture and sound are good, but not noticeably better than the older version. I can't help think that this is more or less the same with a software upgrade which should have happened with the old version. A bit disappointed overall.

Maybe don't get this if you want to play 4K disks
I should have done a better job of reading support forums before purchasing this piece of equipment I got it specifically for playing 4K disks. Every 4K disk that I have played freezes during playback. All of them have been brand new, store-purchased 4K movies. It seems that this player has been plagued with that problem for quite a long time. Based on what I found on several support and/or review sites, the problem appears to happen when the player has to switch layers on the disks. The issue was reportedly corrected in the player's newer firmware, but that does not seem to be the case, at least not with the player I received. The Sony Store will not issue a refund for it, nor will they send a replacement until after I pack up the defective device and send it to them. I, as an individual consumer, have comparatively more to lose by having nothing to show for my purchase for however long it takes Sony to process the exchange, as compared to a multi-billion dollar company sending me a replacement before I ship away the defective one. They could easily collect payment information from me so they could charge me for the replacement if I failed to return the defective item within a predetermined time frame. That is the way my computer hardware vendors handle replacements of defective equipment. If you are considering purchasing a 4K player, do yourself a favor and look at some of the other brands. There are less-expensive players on the market that have better reviews than this particular model. I just ordered a non-Sony replacement and I'm going to write this one off as a loss since Sony won't issue a refund to me. I see no point in getting an exchange from Sony that is probably going to have the exact same problem. That is a waste of my time and effort.

Excellent for what I bought it for , Hires audio from USB , audio out via Coaxial. But video(mkv) from USB drive audio not supported E AC3 (Dolby Digital Plus) ,that is only lack for Sony UBP-X800M2. All kind of disc play perfectly.
Maybe firmware update can fix Dolby Digital Plus compability with mkv files from USB.

Piece of garbage
I know that this unit was quite expensive and thought th it would last longer than 3 years since I have a cheaper Sony tha only cost $40.00 and it works just fine. I'm very disappointed.

Great Disc Player!
I got this mainly for its ability to play multichannel SCAD & DVD-A audio discs. Not too many players can do this nowadays. It has played these and Blu Ray exceptionally well. In two months time, I have yet to have an issue of it locking up. The audio and video aspects of this player have impressed. Really can’t go wrong at this price point.
