The small size, versatile 35mm focal length, and outstanding overall performance of this Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* lens make it an ideal match for compact 35mm full frame format E-mount bodies. Although the optical design is state-of-the-art, this superb wide angle lens remains true to the original Sonnar concept with a bright F2.8 maximum aperture ("Sonne" means "sun" in German). Three double-sided aspherical elements minimize aberration so that stunning contrast and resolution are maintained right out to the image edges at all apertures. The renowned T* lens coating contributes to natural color reproduction as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes me look like a pro. This lens produces the absolute best pictures I have ever seen. It's also compact so I can take it with me. With the 1.4 extender it is great for macro shots. My favorite lens of all times.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens to capture distant scenes Purchased this lens over 1 1/2 years ago. The quality and standard of photograph is really excellent. What you get for the lens price for me represents very good value. For me as an avid landscape photographer the F4 aperture is perfect as it helps keep the lens light and I really don't need those extra stops to capture views. I love the photos it takes of distant scenes, for example mountains, as it helps emphasis the contours and colours. Used with a Sony A7iii landscape photos from this lens are really excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent, fast focusing and compact lens For the first time I decided to buy this kind of zoom with F4.0, the widest aperture. As zooms go this is a quite a compact one. Quality of the images is exemplary, as long as you are happy to settle for slightly deeper depth of field. Focusing is fast and precise, and overall this is an excellent lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tack sharp While everything about this lens is to be liked - there is one particular problem that is pretty annoying. There is loads of purple fringing in high contrast areas. To go for a 2.8 is way out of my means, the reviews that I had read before making this selection is that you lose 1 stop of light compared to f2.8 but everything else is comparable. Not saying regretting the decision but when you pay over a grand you expect the native lens to stand head and shoulders above similar 3rd party lenses

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best (and only tele) there is for Alpha 7 FF line This lens is capable of delivering impressive results. The build form (size & weight) match very well with the a7 series. It is at the moment the only really useable tele lens, providing both AF and IS, for use with the a7 line of FF cameras. All alternatives that I've tried have had some drawbacks: full manual focus (in case of Canon FD lenses or slow AF in case of Canon EF lenses). I have not had the opportunity to test Sony's A-mount lenses, however. Did I mention the excellent build and finish of this lens?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens producing great images I bought this lens about a month ago and had been bringing it with me every time I go for a shoot. This is attributed to the lens’ light weight (for this class of lens) and its image quality. The lens renders very sharp image even at F4. Compared to the GM, I wouldn’t say it’s far off but it is so much lighter! The function keys on the side makes it so much easier to control the lens/camera making the workload a lot lighter when taking photos. It is an absolute joy to use and I’d recommend it to everyone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent if you get a good example! My lens is super sharp, handles really well, OSS is amazing, really happy! Only problem is you’ve got to get a good copy, my first one was terrible, blurry shots, OSS issues but was claimed to be ‘within spec’.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I Love it. Sure, is Ridiculous Expensive, I think Sony need to review it's price, it's heavy, it's big, it's Beautiful, it's insanely Sharp, Fast AF, robust, really well built and the pictures, are amazing. I just love it, specially the hold buttons, the right amount, 3 of them, so when I use in a portrait mode I still have a button on my finger tips, just love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it. For an F4 it’s perfect Focus hold us excellent. It is so light, it weighs like a cheap lens and shoots like a pro. Pity about no 2.8 but the weight would double just pray for sun. Image quality is excellent - did I mention light

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First impressions Although I have not had the chance to test in depth, I took the lens with my A6500 along a Thames walk last week. Highly impressed with the sharpness from all angles. Zoom is smooth. Colours accurate on the sunny day. Autumn colours especially. Lens is heavy which I expected, but I carried it around all afternoon with no fatigue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens with a bargain price When I bought this lens I already owned the 2.8 GM version and this was a purchase for my son. All I can say is wow. It's a joy to use, af is fast and accurate the iq is amazing and it's so light weight. Obviously the 2.8 is better but at this price it's a must have. Buy it you won't be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best 70-200mm I’ve used in my life I’m a pro photojournalist, and I’m shocked about how wonderful this lens is to use. It’s lighter, sharper, quieter, and faster to focus. It was worth every hard earned penny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp and light in weight I bought this about a month ago and I am glad I was talked out of buying the F2.8 version as it is nearly half of the weight but even at F4 minimum I found this lens to be very sharp and with excellent shallow depth of field. Its lightweight means that I can carry and use a telephoto most of the day without getting tired compared to a very much heavier and more expensive F2.8 70-200 lens
Date published: 2019-03-10T00:00:00-05:00
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice medium telephoto I bought this to get a bit of reach for some wildlife photography in the mountain forests of Uganda. Worked well despite some focus challenges as the subject was hidden behind leaves and branches. Spotfocus was a help. Would have liked an f2.8 but could afford it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from love it I bought this lens just a month ago, but i already falling love with. it was my dream since its came out many years ago, but i could'nt afford one until now. the lens itself not to heavy, not to big. easy to handle. the oss is great 1/10 by hand held and the image is still not blurry. The image quality is excellent. Focus is very quick, silent and accurate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic lens. Shame about Sony's pricing This lens is often overlooked as people seem to be drawn more to the G Master. This is ashame as this lens is a fantastic performer and extremely light. It's just ashame that Sony still sells its lenses at prices that are far too high

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Light Lens Been shooting with this lens for a few years with my A6300 and A7iii and its a great lens. Its compact, lightweight and internal zoom which is great for shooting in wet conditions such as the UK. My only two Gripes I have are aesthetical. The white isn't ideal for shooting in muddy environments and also travelling around as i screams expensive lens and i much would have preferred black. Being a landscape photographer the tripod collar would be much better if it was already designed to support Arca Swiss tripod heads instead of buying a 3rd party collar. Apart from those its a fantastic lens!!

Performed like a dream. Left the lens foot at home to lose weight. Internal focusing was a real boon. Good robust lens hood worked well in bright sunlight. Recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sony - FE 70-200mm F4 G OSS I have had the lens for about 5 months now and I am very pleased with the resulting images that the lens produces, couple with the Sony A7R mkiii it's a wining combination. I used to have a Canon 70 - 200mm F2.8 but I really don't miss it and this lighter lens is a joy to carry around. I am a wedding photographer but this lens is perfect for portraits, landscapes and brilliant for sports.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing lens! I have been using this lens for the past 2 or 3 weeks. It has so far made my life easier, the quality of the glass is just so good. I never thought I could take photos as good as I did with this lens. It has a lot of switches for focus, stabilisation, focus lock just like it should. The weight is ideal. Being a lens that doesn't extend and with a constant F4 is very useful, but if I could improve on that, I'd like an F2.8 or lower (I know there is an F2.8 GM version but for almost twice the money). In evenings you start to struggle unless you have your own lighting. An amazing lens that I do not regret spending my hard earned money on, at all! The zoom and focus rings are very good, with the perfect amount of dampening and the zoom ring has a shirt throw so you can be precise and quick. Autofocus does a great job, you would almost never have a situation where you'd have to use manual focus. I use it with an A6400 and it does a tremendous job. Couldn't recommend it more!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Covered in sea water I've only had the opportunity to use this lens on one project and, as yet, haven't had the time to closely review the images. I can say that, due to a miscalculation on my part, the lens, camera and myself were covered in sea water. The lens continued to function through the rest of my shoot. A wipe down with tap water was necessary at the end of the shoot and the lens continues to function as designed.

Lost a star as I've noticed a bit of dust has gotten under the front element. How it happens who knows but doesn't appear to affect the picture quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent zoom lens with good range and optics I bought this lens about 9 months ago and have used it extensively with my a7lll to shoot air shows, vacation photos and wildlife. I am an experienced amateur photographer, but have gotten serious about photography after I retired. The lens is compact, not as heavy as my Sony SEL200600G lens and has always focused quickly and quietly for me. I pair it with my SEL24105G for a full range of options when shooting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great AF and bokeh I bought this over the 100-400 a month ago and am delighted with the purchase. The bird eye AF is superb and sign has short throe on zoom which allows shots I never had before, great reach cf 100-400 and can still use a telconvertor . Plus it is great value for money

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love the lens as an all around I bought this lens few months before Sony released the 2.8 version. I was not sure I did the right buy but eventually it turned out to be perfect for my need. I used mostly in the day light and for landscape on tripod. I am not looking for fast AF as I use it mostly manual focus. The sharpness is as expected and the colours are the strengths of most Sony lens and camera. To close very satisfied and think twice to buy the 2.8 version as I see that lens for different users.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens, forget F2.8 Really good lens, I don’t need the F2.8 and this F4 is great and very sharp, using it on both full and crop sensor cameras A6000 and A7iv. Well made and having a 72mm thread all my filters fit. Moved to Sony from Nikon and to be honest I’m very happy, Nikon lost out as in many ways just seem to be falling behind with their mid range cameras, for what I need anyway

I considered that this lens would not be as sharp and the quality would be lacking however I was pleasantly surprised and I can honestly say that I am not disappointed. It offers great versatility whilst on a shoot, it looks good and it performs very well indeed. I am glad I made the decision to buy it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent value for money This lens is my go to telephoto lens to match with my a6400. The compact size and light weight keep my keep easy to transport and fairly discreet. The f4 aperture gives a nice bokeh for portraits and the sharpness is out of this world for the price of the lens. The tripod mount is strong and sturdy and can be adjusted to rotate the lens to any angle. The zoom ring is smooth in its action and the range of motion to go from 70mm to 200mm isn’t so long that you have to strain to reach from one end to the other. The internal zoom action keeps the lens compact and balanced and the case and lens hood are of excellent quality. I would definitely recommend this lens to others and it is incredible value for money for the sharpness and image quality that it produces.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens Having used this lens for a number of weeks on a 7R, I am very pleased with the purchase. I have used it as a general purpose lens, because it has the image stabilisation which my prime lens does not have and with the 7R you do need to be careful of camera shake/movement, so when I cannot use my tripod I like to use this lens. Of particular note for me are some of my outdoor portrait work with this lens, producing excellent results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not a robust lens Looks like a tank and appears as an competitor alternative. Lens is not pro grade and can't be used as I used my competitors white lens. Focus not working after a impact within the camera bag. Inside it is a plastic lens, cheaply made. A big surprise to me. I googled and many 70-200 f4 and f2.8 users have the same experience. It's a pity that a small steel ring gets bended and fail the focus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning.... I purchased this lens for use on both my A7 and A7R - and it certainly does not disappoint. In fact, after coming from the Nikon world - I expected this Sony lens to fall a bit short in IQ compared to my Nikkor counterparts - but, in fact - it is as good as, if not better! - then my Nikkor 80-200mm F/2.8 IF-ED and other Nikkor lenses (I own a bunch of high end Nikon lenses). A couple of very simple truths about this lens... 1) Looks are deceiving. I expected this lens to be hefty and heavy - but, looks are indeed - deceiving. For the form factor, it's actually quite svelte and handles and balances beautifully, either in-hand or attached to a tripod (from the lens foot). While the weight overpowers a bit my NEX-7, it is wonderfully balanced on either my A7 or A7R. 2) Focus speed and focus acquisition is fast. Really fast. Even when stopped down to smaller f/stops. I haven't experienced any focus-hunting on either my A7 or A7R. 3) I keep being asked "is this lens sharp". Yes - it is. It is SHARP. It's as good as - if not BETTER - then my Nikkor high-end lenses, some being twice the price of this Sony lens when I purchased the Nikon lenses "new". So, that's a huge compliment to the Sony Optics team. Stunning lens..And yes - again - it is SHARP - even "pixel peeping a 36MB RAW file from my A7R... 4) There are manual controls on the lens to facilitate your shooting style and what you are shooting. These buttons/switches activate and deactivate settings you may have set in your camera - and work wonderfully. No longer to you have to go back to the Menu on the Camera to adjust "on-the-fly" these same features and take your eye from the viewfinder. This lens was "made" to fit with the Sony FE bodies - and it works wonderfully. 5) The build quality is stunning. The focus and zoom rings on my example are silky smooth and give exactly what I expect for tactile feedback. So - here is the bottom line... If you are coming from the Nikon or Canon world of professional lenses/bodies - BUY THIS lens if you are looking for a native FE lens to match what you've come to expect from other professional optical manufacturers. This Sony lens does not disappoint. A little about me..? I shoot commercially and expect the best out of my equipment. For that? This lens will fit right into my shoots and style, I hope this helps.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light, versatile, accurate and extremely fast auto Purchased last month and has been my main camera lens so far and I am very pleased with the results. Though rated at F4 the Sony A7Rii that I am using it with far outweighs this. I am looking forward to Sony releasing a 2,8 which I am sure, when released will become the lens of choice for many photographers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Bargain Of My Year I borrowed this lens last summer for a very intensive shoot overseas in Korea for two weeks. It was a life saver. Using the Fe 70-200 F4 G OSS was the same as finding an oasis in the desert. The lens was so light on my Sony A7 so that even with a bum shoulder I always would forget about it until I needed it. Working with it and my 24 to 70 mm F4 lens was a pleasure and I really worked it hard. I shot every day In all kinds of conditions sometimes in really dark places and using the 70 to 200 mm, I shot a lot of interesting photos without a tripod shooting wide open at F4. I made images with that lens at 1/15 of a second handheld and sharp as a razor's edge. I was able to capture the subtle color that lived inside the color photographs that I saw in some very dark places. Buying this lens may be the best deal that I may have made recently. It is small and light and travels well. You can carry it in a jacket pocket or photo vest. And finally - the lens sturdiness is a plus and it is also as sharp as a serpent's tooth. It's a truly great lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great telephoto lens with ultimate sharpness Having already bought the Zeiss 24-70mm & 55mm I decided to buy this telephoto lens to add to my collection. Some may consider this a very expensive lens but the price is justified by the results it produces. It is sharper than its rivals but in a smaller and ligher package. No negative issues to report and it is one of my favorite lenses so far. I hope Sony continue to make lenses of this calibre and consider releasing a tele-converter for it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous lens for travel While it is true the newer Sony lens is faster, the fact is it is really heavy and the barrel extends. If you travel or do hiking, it is a load to take. The f4 G OSS is simply a wonderful lens and razor sharp at nearly every point. Frankly, the A7'rII I have has such a wonderful low light ability, a faster lens simply is not a priority for me. I can't recommend this lens highly enough.

I was very happy with how clear and crisp the photos were. I have a Nex 7 camera and the colors were great. I have loved my NEX 7 and find this new lens a great addition. The lens fits well in my hand. The only draw back is the weight when I carry it around. Both photos below were taken while the car was moving at a good speed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent, sharp lens. Absolutely excellent lens. The build quality is fantastic, although with my sample the tripod collar moves too easily when it is supposedly locked down. The IS is decent, not as good as a cheaper competitor lens that I have, but it is a heck of a lot quieter. Focussing is essentially silent, as is changing aperture. This lens feels like it's built like a tank and could really stand up to abuse. The size is great for an FE system like my A7s, although I feel it's a lot more comfortable to use with a battery grip installed. It's a bit pricey for what it is, to be honest, but offset against the cost of the camera (in comparison to the competition) the overall price about evens out. But the lens is super sharp, lovely bokeh. I've been using it for aerial photography, and just general photo taking, and it's performed extremely well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just the ticket On camera most of the time since getting. Size and weight are reason I chose this rather than to f2.8, being I shoot landscapes f4 is fine. Stabilization works great for hand held shots though that's rare. Image quality so far from lens and the A7R have really helped take my photography to a new level, so much so that I now have prints rather than just digital copies. Regularly print 20" x 30" and 16" x 36", also a 20" x 59". Anyone with E mount who shoots landscapes should get this lens as it doesn't disappoint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sony has done a great job with this lens! After reading the many articles and tests that involved this lens I was really starting to second guess my purchase. Now after getting it and putting it through my own tests the lens was well worth the purchase. The lens is very sharp from 70mm all the way to 200mm. I didn't see any problems in the corners at 200mm even when pixel counting. Maybe I got a newer release of this lens, I'm also using the latest firmware update on my Sony A7r. Great lens, quality is superb! Focus can be a little slow in low light but that's given with an F4 lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens Purchased the FE 70-200mm F4 G OSS Full-frame Zoom Lens to use with my a7 and a7r. This set-up works great for me as it feels lighter in my hands than my old set-up, Nikon D610 + Nikkor 70-200m f/4G VR. The images captured with both Sony cameras are sharp and as good or better than my old set-up. I am very happy that I made the switch. I do not care about the techno stuff. All that I care about is the output and with this equipment, I can see an improvement in my images. I have no problem carrying the FE 24-70mm, FE 70-200mm, FE 55mm along with either the a7 or the a7r all day with no complaints.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Optimus Prime If you own an a7R, this is definitely the lens to capture images of sports, birds, portraiture, and videos. It is the only zoom lens that has the razor sharpness to match the high resolution sensor of the a7R; for example, when you take a picture of NASCAR 51, you will be able to discern each and every hair of Justin Allgaier's eyebrows. I have been using this FE 70-200 F4 G since it was first issued by Sony for everything but macrophotography. The color is perfect and there is no distortion. Marvelous landscapes come from closing the aperture down to have foreground to infinity in focus. Attach a polarizing filter and capture rainbow trout swimming in the clear mountain streams. Project the image on a 12 ft screen to see shimmering fish scales. If you are going to attach a zoom lens to the a7R, make it this one; and take spectacular photographs everywhere you go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid performance, just about small enough Recently purchased as part of a move from a DSLR-based system, complete with giant f2.8 zooms. While I miss that extra aperture stop a little, the overall reduction of size and weight in the whole system makes it worth the sacrifice. Very good performance right from f4, with the exception of the corners being just a little soft until you stop down. That's no a problem for my style of work, though. Out of focus backgrounds look very smooth and clean. Autofocus is fast and accurate, and the stabilisation works surprisingly well. Overall, I'm very happy with it so far!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality Lens I’ve had this lens for about a month and have taken approx 1000 shots with it. The results are stunning. Extremely sharp and quick to lock focus. I am very happy with the performance of this lens and would definitely recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ultimate Action Lens It's a great lens. F4 may not be as shallow as 2.8, but it still does a fantastic job!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much better than I expected I would like to have bought the GM version, however, I couldn't justify the much higher cost. I'm impressed; much sharper through the focal range than I expected, when used on my Alpha 1. Not very heavy and easy to handle. Focussing is fast and accurate. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great travel zoom Have had this for a few years and it is a really good lens if you recognize that it isn't a super fast lens. On the other hand it is something that you don't need a rolling suitcase to carry it.
