Rated 5 out of 5 by from Twist of the wrist critical for cutting tape I had a lot of difficulty with this model because it was not like my older (lost) one. I couldn't figure out how to cut the tape. After reading the response to the poor ratings, I see that a twist of the wrist is critical to cut the tape. My previous model did not have the retractable blade feature, clearly a modern addition, so it just cut. Now that I get the twist, I am ok. Probably need to add instructions somewhere on the frame.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unit is a total waste of materials incorporated Bought this dispenser with tape at Costco. As an engineer, whoever designed this should be fired, along with the staff that put this on the market. The instructions are laughable and the function is non-existent. It does not function. If this is an example of 3M's staff (which it is) I need to dump my significant number shares in the company. 13.8 Billion dollars in infrastructure completed (by me) and I'm stymied by an imperfect tape dispenser. A roll of tape and scissors seems to work 1000% better. Not a fine example of ISO9000 quality control. As a shareholder I am not pleased. By the way, your terms and conditions for posting are inconsistant with applicable law under UCC.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GARBAGE THIS THING IS AN EXPENSIVE PILE OF GARBAGE! It will not cut the tape and when you try to help by applying pressure to cut it will severely cut your finger! So, it is a severe safety hazard and should be banned! Only reason I didn't give it a zero is because that isn't an option! Such a BIG disappointment after all the years of using Scotch 3M products!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Convenient and Helpful This tape dispenser made shipping items much easier, cutting the time in half when it came to taping the boxes. I found the tape to be nice and strong, providing a secure bond with the cardboard. The only downside I found was sometimes the roll of tape would come off when not in use because the part holding it on had loosened.

However, the handle is a bit short so if you have large hands this will not be a comfortable product to use. Also, the instructions say "the serrated cutting blade will 'pop out' to cut tape". However, there is no mechanical movement like there is with packing tape dispensers I've used.

This is easily the best tape dispenser I have ever used. It is what you’d expect to find in a professional shipping and packing operation. The foam handle is comfortable in the hand, easy to grip and manipulate, and the metal and heavy plastic construction is robust and pro-level durable. The mechanism for adjusting the tension on the tape roll is an innovative and useful addition. The dispenser works flawlessly. I easily taped box lids and cut the tape with a mere flick of the wrist. This is the last packing tape dispenser I intend to own

I like the ease of how the tape glides along the boxes and that there is an adjustable tension dial. It cuts well and the tape sticks great! I like that this dispenser can be used over and over again just by refilling the tape roll when it runs out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smooth and Simple to Use This packing tape dispenser is super easy to use. The foam handle makes it comfortable to hold, which is a bonus when moving/ taping a lot of boxes. The rolling bit smooths the tape down as you roll, avoiding any annoying bumps. It isn't super loud, either. I liked that it came with a roll of tape, and it was easy to find where the tape starts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tape, dispenser needs work. I have been using Scotch shipping tape for years. It's my go to tape for all my work needs. I always purchase the heavy duty tape with the dispenser from FedEx. I was excited to try out the Heavy Duty Dispenser, but using it proved to be disappointing. It dispenses the tape fine. I like the soft grip handle and the tape flows smoothly. The issues happen when cutting the tape. It doesn't cut the tape efficiently. Most of the time, it dispenses about another foot or more of tape before I can get it to cut. It also caused backlash sometime causing the tape to get rolled back together. Cutting tape should be effortless. Using the basic plastic dispenser allow for more precision control of the tape and a easier cutting mechanism. I would never purchase this Heavy Duty Dispenser based on the issues I had, but will continue to use the tape.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The cushion handle is nice. This is okay. It's a bit on the heavy side which I don't mind. I do like the cushion on the handle. I feel like its a bit cumbersome to use. I do a lot of shipping though so I hope it will become easier to handle the more I use it. The cutting seemed a little hard at first but after you get into the groove if you are doing a lot of packaging then it does get easier. I have to say it works for its purpose despite that it can be difficult at first especially if you are not used to using an actual tape dispenser with a handle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Way to Seal Boxes I received the Scotch Packaging Tape with Heavy Duty Dispenser as a free product to try. Putting on the roll of tape was very easy and it even came with directions! As soon as the tape of fed through the roller it is ready. Using it to shut packing boxes is a breeze. The tape glides off the roll and sticks to the box with no problem. It is very easy to use the dispenser to cut the tape exactly where it needs to be cut. Just be careful because the blade is sharp!

We were moving our daughter to college and her many many many many boxes of stuffs needed to be secured for transporting. This wonderful little tape dispenser was comfortable in hand as we worked all day. Light and easy to use. Made the construction of boxes go a lot faster than it had been going. The tape holder tab thingie kept the tape ready for action, no finding the start of the tape over and over again. Very good product. Super useful and just a great piece of equipment to have on hand at all times.

I don't use this everyday, but it makes having to seal a box a lot easier. The only hiccup I experienced was the first time I used it the tape was trying to come of the wheel and not cutting, but once I increased the tension it worked fine.

It has a nice foam comfortable handle and an adjustable tension knob that you can dial to control the tape dispensing when taping up your boxes. It has a nice sharp blade to cut the tape with ease. This one is even better because of the nice cushy handle for a better and more comfortable grip and the guard to stop the tape from rolling back is good. I tape a lot of boxes throughout the year just returning packages or sending things to family so this will come in real handy. I will save more money on just having the one bigger tape roll as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This will be the only tape dispenser you need. I was given this product as a sample but I have owned one for a very long time. I used it a lot when I sold on Ebay. This is the best tape dispenser I used. I tried to cheap out but that didn't work. This one has strong tape that doesn't tear on it's own. The cutting mechanism works very well to cut when you do want it cut. And the part that pushes down the tape into place on the box is incredibly handy. The cushion grip is a big bonus. I wish I could take photo's of me using it, but that's kind of hard with my hands busy taping. Needless to say, buy and use this tape dispenser and tape first. It'll save you headache and expense later.

That is a big plus because I do not need to buy this again, just the tapes. The knob and non-retractable blade makes it very steady which I like. It is very easy to use and it closes boxes quickly. This time of year is hectic for me since I’m a teacher and live in a district where we have to pack our stuff up every summer, this has helped us quickly and efficiently seal up our boxes to keep our stuff safe over the summer. The roll spins very smooth and easy, way smoother than my previous dispenser. It is also very simple to cut the tape with the built in fixed blade. A+! The included tape is very thick and clear too!

I love the soft padded handle and high quality. I do not like the plastic blade to cut the tape. It often failed to cut and I almost want the metal blade. I will use this but I am not pleased with the plastic cut.

I had a small package to ship out and using the dispenser was surprisingly easy. I have used other tape dispensers in the past that were very difficult to maneuver, but this dispenser seemed smaller and lighter which made it perfect for my small arthritic hands. The cushioned grip helped to prevent slipping from my hand. The tension adjustment knob made it so I didn't have to pull so hard to dispense the tape and the cutter was very sharp and cut through the tape with ease.

It was so easy to load the tape and to use! The tape ran too smoothly at first, and then I learned that it actually has an adjustable tension dial. I was able to adjust how quickly the tape came out to what I prefer. The updated design with the non-retractable blade made it so much easier to cut the tape. I didn't end up having to jam my hand on it or having to tweak it this way and that for the tape to cut. The comfortable foam grip handle is amazingly soft and helps your hand when you have to tape up multiple boxes.

I was pleasantly supprised with the soft foam handle and that the product is actually made out of metal instead of plastic for once making it much more sturdier than others. It feels lightweight yet sturdy in your hand. It included tape which was also a nice touch. It was easy to load the tape into the dispenser and get to taping up boxes. It was very smooth in dispensing the tape and made taping boxes much easier especially with the built in tape cutter. After about 3 passes with the tape it did have a little issue wanting to cut the tape but I think that was mostly my error. Overall I really like this tape dispenser!

This new scotch tape gun works just as well except it’s lighter and more compact. Definitely easier to throw in a craft bag or bag for work for any projects I’m in the middle of. I would definitely recommend this to someone looking for an easy to use tape gun that is proven to hold up over time.

It was easy to figure out how to use and it has a protective shield over the razor-sharp teeth. It cut the tape really easy, and the tape was easy to feed through the machine.

At first I wasn’t sure how to load the gun with the roll of tape, but quickly figured it out. It wasn’t as intimidating as it looked. Once I figured out where the tape goes, it threaded through nicely and was a breeze to use. Glided like butter. I really love how it cuts the tape so easily and fast so you can move in to the next box, no need to use scissors. The gun was surprisingly lightweight and packed the boxes securely

The tape is thicker than most, doesnt break easily, sticks perfectly and stays in the dispenser when done. It also is quiet (not that it really matters, but sometimes it annoys the wife). Excellent item! I recieved the Scotch Heavy Duty Packaging Tape Dispenser in exhange for this review.

First off, it was very difficult to get the tape into the "track" and started without it sticking to everything. I wasted a bunch of tape before I got it ready to use. Once I got the tape in and ready to use it, it did work very nice and smoothly and made it super easy to tape up a box. The handle is nice and comfortable as well and would be great for someone who does a lot of taping. However, I found the tape would slip back out of the "track" easily and I would have to get it started again over and over. Basically, I think it needs some kind of notches or something like that to help keep the tape in place once it is threaded in. It would also be nice if it was easier to get started without the tape getting stuck. Other than that, it did tape very smoothly and easily and cut nicely.

I purchased my own which I use daily at my job, who supplies really cheap, crappy equipment, and have had the same one for 3+ years. Decided I wanted a new one and couldn't find the old model. Even ordered from Amazon, which showed image of the old model but recieved the new one. The handle is much shorter and the metal piece which holds the tape against the wheel is much thinner which causes the tape to wrap around it. I use this 100s of times a night in a distribution warehouse and hate having to unstick the tape for every use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from NEW design is not as safe as old design! Scotch changed the design of this tape dispenser. The old tape dispenser engaged and retracted the tape cutting blade. The new tape dispenser has an exposed tape cutting blade that is fixed. The problem is that the exposed cutting blade can easily cut someone. I have already had two employees accidentally cut themselves on the exposed blade. Also, the packing tape sticks to the metal lever below the roller really bad. Scotch, PLEASE bring back the OLD design and let your customers have a choice!! The old design was much safer and easier to use.

I'm often taping up boxes and packages, so I volunteered to evaluate this Scotch Heavy Duty Dispenser with Packing Tape. Time is money for me, so my evaluation was based on two main things that effect my time- ease of use and durability. This product met both of those requirements. Loading the tape onto the dispenser was easy, and I was able to quickly apply the tape to the box and cut it. I never had problems with the tape not sticking or the dispenser not cutting. It was a one and done job. (Side note- the dispenser has a way to adjust the tape's tension. This was great because I never delt with loose tape sticking to itself or the dispenser.) The other quality I evaluated was durability. Somehow my tape dispensers always get dropped or knock off the table onto the floor. It's super frustrating because the tape roll comes off of the dispenser, or worse the dispenser breaks. This dispenser got dropped several times and the roll of tape actually stayed on the dispenser. That was a huge time saver because I didn't have to stop what I was doing to fix the tape dispenser; instead, I just picked it up and kept taping. And, I don't anticipate this dispenser to crack or break like other dispensers when dropped because it is made of METAL, not flimsy plastic. All in all, this product worked very well for me and out preformed my other tape dispensers, so I'm going to keep it and toss out my old tape dispensers.

This is one of the worst products that we could have purchased. The teeth that cut the tape do not release close enough to the tape. You are then stuck with no way to cut the tape. We have even tried to take off the plastic guard if there was a defect that doesn't allow for the tape to cut. Our ULINE tape shipper dispenser works so much better.

The instructions aren't as clear as they should be and it can be frustrating and confusing. I found it easier to use the standard roll and cutter than this. It came with a roll of tape, which is nice. The foam handle is comfortable. The device and tape are high quality.

The handle is very comfortable and has a generous amount of padding. The only drawback that I have encountered is that it is difficult to start a new roll of tape. It wants to stick to the metal piece on the bottom instead of adhering to the package.

The directions weren't as clear as they could have been, but I did figure out the setup eventually. It does work smoothly, although I would have to say that the tape smoother is difficult to use due to the angle. I have carpal tunnel, so this dispenser will be excellent, and even a must, when moving. The handle just fit into my hand, so it might be more difficult if you have larger hands.

One thing I wished I had paid better attention to was the sharpness of the tape’s cutting edge. Even with the explicit warning of its sharpness, I still somehow got a minor cut (my fault). Overall, it’s a very helpful product and the tape secures really well.

The foam handle provides comfort while holding and using the dispenser. The tape provided was also quite heavy duty, so you don't have to fear your taping won't hold up. My only complaint was the assembly instructions were a little unclear and confusing. They don't mention there's a protective guard on the blade that you have to remove. So be sure to take that final step, and this tape dispenser will work wondrously! The tape glides smoothly off the roll, and the blade cuts quickly and efficiently. 3M provided me with a free sample of this product for my honest, unbiased review.

After removing the plastic packaging, you place the roll on the wheel and guide it through the dispenser. You can adjust the tightness/tension on the wheel that allows the tape to dispense. This would be great for sealing multiple boxes for shipping or packing to move. 3M sent me this free product sample to evaluate and review.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heavy Duty Must Have I work in a warehouse where they’ll happily add work to your day, but rarely provide the necessary tools to make your job easier and more efficient. So when 3M offered me a Scotch Brand Heavy Duty Dispenser in exchange for a review you know I jumped at the chance. It made my work day much easier, I didn’t have to sit there and scrape my finger nails on the edge of the tape to find the beginning of the roll. This dispenser is heavy duty and it can handle being dropped occasionally. I’m naturally born clumsy. My work efficiency has increased, and I’m taking the dispenser with me when I find another job. I definitely would recommend this dispenser to anyone that would listen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great thing to have I realize that a packaging tape dispenser might seem like an odd thing to review, but let me tell you why this is one of the best. I've used packaging tape dispensers in the past that I basically end up removing the roll of tape from the dispenser and just manually applying tape in that manner. Most of the time, the tape dispenser is flimsy and it can be very difficult to use. Sometimes the cutting mechanism is placed in a very odd position or it simply fails to provide a clean cut. I've even had tape dispensers in which the roll of tape wouldn't stay on. I am happy to report, however, that this packaging tape dispenser has none of those issues. It is quite substantial and I'm very impressed with the build and quality. Applying the tape is very easy and this just works like you would want an effective tape dispenser to work. The cutting mechanism is placed correctly, the handle is comfortable, and it works like a charm. This is definitely one of those items that you don't want to just settle for the discounted bargain-brand off-name substitute. Get the real thing. And be happy that you did.

I have cut myself trying to yank the tape away. This design is inefficient and wastes tape. This dispenser was not cheap, was Scotch branded, so I expected so much more. Like others, I tried to remove the plastic guard to see if I could get the tape closer to the teeth of the razor. Almost $30.00 for a tape dispenser that's harder to use than cheap packing tape.

Prior to receiving this, I was using a tape gun that was about 15 years old and made a loud screeching noise every time I used it. Not this one! It works perfectly! I love the soft, cushy handle on it and the ease of loading it! The compact design makes it easy to hold without with one hand while holding your box with the other. I will say, I did have to adjust the tension when I first got it, prior to doing so, my tape stuck to the dispenser. However, a quick twist of the knob and it was smooth sailing from then on.

It's also a lot easier to keep track of than a roll of tape on it's own, you can't miss this when you put it down! The tape rolls smoothly and the tension knob is a pretty cool feature helps me to control the speed of the tape roll, do I want to tape like a madwoman or someone with sense, those are the tensions that we've called them. The handle on the dispenser is comfortable for my hands it's got a bit of padding that helped keep my hands from getting blisters. The tape itself is strong, it held up to my tendency to overpack boxes. I was spared not losing any dishes from tape that fails! This product lives up to the Scotch 3M ruggedness!

The handle has a very nice, effective grip for holding. The roll of tape is very easy to manipulate through the roller, the cutter, etc, esp. with the included instructions. In addition to the parcels I use this tape gun to seal up envelopes and place over addresses so it doesn't get washed off in the elements. Another feature is the adjustable tension of the tape roll. This can make a world of difference on the usefulness of the plastic guard that pushes the tape down and make for an easier use. I can't imagine ever NOT using this with the parcels. Deduction is this is just a bit heavier than my last one but not a characteristic that would steer me from replacing with the same.

You can adjust the tension easily making the dispenser easy for anyone to use. Loading the tape takes no time at all. Pop the roll on and feed it through the roller and metal guide. That’s it! The only problem I had was figuring out the blade. There was a nice sticker to warn me it was sharp but I failed to realize not only did the sticker need to be removed but also the plastic guard. I tried everything until it hit me! I feel so silly now ?? but the blade guards is an awesome safety feature. Oh and I almost forgot— the clear plastic piece at the top really helps when taping up large boxes. I received the product from 3M.

The blade is sharp so keep out of reach of small children or clumsy people. Use the blade guard that’s kind of flimsy but you could always layer your tape over it.

This one was awesome and the tape didn’t stick to it, ruin a bunch of tape, and make a huge mess like some other brands I have used previously. This cuts through tape super easy as well and it is easy to put the tape on as well as take off the empty role when needed. This shouldn’t need replacing for a very long time, but when it does, I’ll be buying another one of these!

The foam handle is a very nice perk - much more comfortable than others I have used. The dispenser comes with instructions and tape which is very good. It was easy to use and worked just as I would hope. If you are in need of a packaging tape dispenser, I would recommend this one.

The retractable feature actually makes it more dangerous and almost guarantees some variety of injury trying to make it work. Returning it to the store same day I bought it. One star is too kind.

Either 3m tested this with junk tape or they're hoping the blade will somehow caress the tape apart. Easily and literally the worst tape gun I've used in my life.

If you cut yourself with a tape dispenser, hopefully that's a lesson you only have to learn once. If you learn it again, you probably deserve it. I miss when products weren't designed for the lowest common denominator.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product if Your Aim is Wasting Lots of Tape Everytime I tighten the tension knob (so that the tape won't just coming and coming), within a few more 'tapings' it's completely loose again and the tape just keep coming out forever and ever no matter how hard I try to cut it off. (You had one job, tension knob!) Everything sucks, but luckily China (and 3M CEO) are (more than) OK. Phew.

The tape that came with it is so thin it sticks together but that’s not what I am reviewing here. This dispenser is the worst because of the safety blade. It is sunk in so far it won’t come out enough to cut the tape off! I’m gonna trash it and search for an older model that works! With a name like Scotch you would think it would be great! Save your money and pass this one by.

I normally read reviews before making purchases but given it said Scotch and 3M I trusted it had to be the best. WRONG. The tape does not cut off. All the reviews are accurate now that I have read them. Do not buy this, you will frustrate yourself. I do not recommend this dispenser. I can’t believe I have to now do research to find a good tape dispenser This would be the perfect gift to someone you don’t like.

No matter how I try to cut the tape it does not cut, merely puts dents in my boxes and then I have to use scissors. I don't like it at all. I had to YouTube a general tape gun video and saw i needed to remove the blade cover. Once i figured that out and wasted a bunch of tape, packaging is a breeze. I took a star off because instructions definitely need to be clearer and the blade didn't work as well cutting as i had hoped. The handle is definitely comfortable to use. I have included a pic pointing to the cover that needs to be removed so hopefully you don't waste 20 minutes like i did trying to figure it out.

I can easily use it to cut the tap by slight twisting of the wrist without any mess. In addition, the cushioned foam handle is very comfortable for daily using. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tape is great, handle needs a little work I used the tape and dispenser to package a box to mail to a friend. We have also used it to make a cat house out of boxes. The tape itself works well but the dispenser was hard to use. It cuts really well and the weight/hold is good but it doesn’t help to catch the tape on the side of the box so I still need two hands. I was expecting to only need one hand to use it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great performance, sharp blade The instructions for installing tape is simple to follow but getting it started was just a little tricky. I also cut myself on the thumb but do appreciate the warning that the blade is sharp, so keep out of the way of the littles when not using. Overall, performance it works great and the tape cuts with ease. This will come in handy to pack moving boxes soon!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heavy duty tape dispenser This dispenser worked great to tape up boxes with a one hand function I was able to get the job done quickly . The handle was comfortable to use and I was satisfied with this tape dispenser . I didn’t have to keep stopping to find my tape line .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A little confusing I dont know if it was just me or the tape. The tape was a little confusing to wrap around the dispenser. In order for the tape to hold you had to press down and tape it fast. It was easier to use the tape without the dispenser.

This dispenser actually made the process of packing boxes a bit easier. It works smoothly and allowed me to stuff and seal every box with a nice steady flow. I would recommend anyone looking for assistance in packing to consider this!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes sealing boxes quick and easy This tape dispenser is so easy to use when sealing boxes or tearing pieces of tape for classroom use. The foam handle is very comfortable and the dispenser is not as heavy as older ones we have had, so it seems easier to use repeatedly. I like that there is a guard to cover the the cutting blade just to make it safer. It is bulkier than some smaller dispensers, so I had to find a good place to store it.

I am a teacher, so we need to box things up each summer. I’m certain this is going to do what I need it to. Very good product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Work well This is an ok tape dispenser. It's easy to load and to use. I was able to seal boxes without accidentally cutting myself. However, when I was done using it, the tape slipped out of place and stuck to itself. I thought that this dispenser was supposed to prevent that from happening, but it I guess it doesn't.
