Rated 5 out of 5 by from Product is trash I owned a RAX40 for just over an year now and no matter how many times I have tried to update the firmware, make tweaks to my wifi settings and do performance tests between wired/wireless the product just doesn't work. When it works it works well for just a little bit. Then it has a stroke and never recovers. a constant daily/weekly power cycle is required and the web interface whether you use Chrome/Firefox/Safari/IE it just hangs, fails to load or save settings, and takes several minutes for it to stabilize after waiting about five minutes for the device to figure out it's a router and does the basic functions.

Over the last 8 months of owning this router, the router would always constantly drop out wifi and require reboots to get it up and running again. this would happen DAILY and not very good experience when working from home. After weeks and weeks of complaints through support forums and emails/calls, finally got some sort of support but in the form of TESTING A BETA FIRMWARE. Basically, Netgear sell you a product that is faulty, expect you to be their lab rats testing their beta firmware and also try to upsell you their support plans when you are outside of their 90-day customer support period. It's absolute robbery - you'd expect that with a 1 year manufacturer's warranty that you'd also have 1 year worth of customer support! If I knew how bad this experience was going to be with this Netgear router I would have opted to buy from another company that's more reputable and honest like ASUS and TP-Link. Heed my warning, do not buy this product or any other Netgear AX product as they ALL have had faults with firmware.

Turned extender off and it works like a charm. To be fair the extender is 4 or 5 years old so me be complications in version 6 radio bands

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Problems after 4 months, no Tech Support After 4 months, the router started losing wifi capabilities. Both the 2.4 and 5.0 networks disappear and every device connected to them loses connections. A wired connection still works, but the router must be rebooted to fix. This happens daily. I called tech support and they won't troubleshoot the issue unless I purchase support for $90 (6 months of support). I'd be better off just buying a different router.

I have been on the phone for hours and hours with tech support and still no solution. Keep shopping if you want to stable fast wifi 6 router.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely Buggy I bought this in Dec when it was on Thanksgiving sale at Walmart. Big mistake. Its been problems every since. At first the wifi speed was slow which took a couple of firmware updates. Now after the last one, the wifi "freezes" once or twice everyday. I tried the support and they basically "guessed" that the problem was with the router and asked me to pay $50 for service support to fix the router config. You swindled me enough.. no more. bye bye netgear.. will never buy a product from you again.

He said I would probably need a stronger router than theirs to go through the insulated interior walls of my house. Mostly, it has been great. Will not connect to the internet anymore. Prior to that massive failure it started dropping connections. It continued to get worse and then became an absolute failure. This is junk. Im sure you will add your canned response of is your firmware update done... Yea you blow toads why dont you find a real solution to fix your garbage.

I bought this from walmart when it was available ~ 100USD. 1) It needs an update else wont work out of the box 2) The unit stopped working after about 4 months of use. No hardware reset or update seems to revive this. Cant configure the wifi and wont save any changes. Defaults dont work. So its now an expensive paper weight

Spent 4 hours with IT trying to reset and 2 times I got dropped and they never called back so I had to start over. Finally just returned it and went with another brand!! Stay away from this Router! Multiple times throughout the day the WiFi stops broadcasting and computers are not able to see the router. Only fix is to reboot the router. Pretty crappy performance from a $200 router.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing little router I work for a cable company and have seen and worked with several routers from same and different companies and can tell that this router is great for the size and price. Most houses that i go to and myself have more than 10 devices connected to the router and at least 2 smart TVs. This router had no issues with transfer speeds and lagging issues. My son games while we stream Netflix and he can see the difference. I have a gigabit 8port on it with extender and no issues at all connecting with new router. Is on open space in living room and has much better distance (@2200sqf than my older netgear ac router. In my opinion if the price is right and you have a small to medium size home with more than 16 small devices and 4 TVs this device will make a difference with stock cable company routes. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Only works if you don't upgrade When working, the WiFi range and speed are better than my older router. The newest firmware (1.0.3.80 makes this about as useful as a brick. Turn off automatic updates for the firmware and keep it at a previous revision if you want the router to actually work for more than a few hours. I've been using version 1.0.2.60 fine for the last month or so. There is a large thread on Netgear's community forms about this issue, search "RAX40 Firmware 1.0.3.80 Crash/Bug Log" to find it. Occasionally after a power outage the router will fail to boot. Usually turning it off and on again will fix the problem, but sometimes it takes multiple attempts. This router is not currently supported by alternative firmware such as OpenWRT or DD-WRT, so you'll be stuck with the OEM firmware. While the older version will get you a functional device, the UI for managing it is garbage.

I was able to get a refurbished model through their service dept (after several phone calls) and it had the same symptoms within a few weeks. I went through the same process and had a brand new one sent out which within a few weeks shows the same signs as the other two devices. TL:DR consistent packet dropping and ping spiking after only a few weeks of use on multiple devices

Setup was simple, it looks nice and is not excessive in mass like many modern routers. Unfortunately it doesn't maintain a reliable signal. It drops at varying rates but will drop 8+ times per hour at its worse making it literally unusable. There are very limited controls for the router too as it is a very basic configuration. These routers are on clearance or have been discontinued by everyone, for a reason.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from RAX40 is down more often than up Up until this RAX40 I've been a faithful Netgear guy for the last 12 years. Every new router I get from them just seems to get a bit slower on reboot and the RAX40 is no exception. If I had to reboot this router once every month it wouldn't be so bad but this router is so bad about disconnecting that it has to be done daily if not every few hours. From unplugging it until you have a usable signal is roughly 5 minutes. I've read all the Netgear forums, checked off all the problematic areas, shutdown every function that made this a $160 router and to no avail still goes down daily. 2 week ago 8/17/20 I rolled my firmware back from 1.0.3.80 to 1.0.3.64, still crashes daily. Last week I rolled it back to 1.0.3.62 and I still have the same effect. Monday the 8/31/20 I rolled it back 1.0.3.60. Crashed once last night and today I've rebooted it twice already. I'm done Netgear, I've already ordered a replacement from your competitor. You guys have lost your touch. If my laptop can reboot in under 30 seconds why does this router take 5 minutes? Then to top that off why does this router have so many problems. There is so many people who are having troubles with your products as of late. You guys really have left the realm of quality over quantity. I'd hate to see what a $400 router of yours looks like let alone this piece of junk. Good bye.

In my search for a solution, I discovered many Internet complaints re: the same. I contacted support and received rudimentary diagnostic steps. I ultimately returned the unit and purchased the ASUS RT-AX3000. Also easy setup and working reliably - no issues at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely glitchy - Support Can't Fix It Avoid buying this router!!! About a month after I bought this router, it stopped allowing any devices to connect to the wifi network. Restarting the router would solve the problem only for a few days at a time. So, every few days, I would have to restart my router. If it happened to break when no one was at home to restart the router, nothing in the house could connect to the Internet until someone got home. This is a terrible experience given the cost of this router. Customer Support had me change a bunch of settings, but that did not resolve the issue, and then the free support period ended. From researching the message boards, this is a known issue with the router, exacerbated by faulty firmware releases from Netgear.

Firmware is unstable and unreliable, eg. you cannot change settings on log page; if you enable AX features, the speed drops instantly; ... Netgear doesn't care about users' problems as you can see people complain about still the same errors that go unnoticed. Avoid Netgear at all cost.

Wifi continues to drop, support tells you no fix, sends you a refurbished one, will have continued issues, then support conveniently let's you know it is out of warranty and tries to evade you. Oh and by the way, these are "Customer Care Advocate" as they call themselves. All they advocate for is waiting for your warranty to expire to kick to you to the curb. Netgear needs to wake up and support their customers who own this product. This is absurd and terrible that you have a product like this. Make it right, show some human elements into your customer service. What is even better is they want you to pay for shipping to send back their defective product. With these types of jokes, they could start their own comedian gig.

I did so because I was getting extreme breakup of the streaming signal to my three TVs in our home. Since installing this new router two weeks ago I have experienced a clear, crisp, and faster WiFi signal to all of my TVs with no signal breakup. Thanks Netgear!

Bought it in November finally installed it in February 4 months later doesn’t work called mergers for support since it’s broke and when they have me do what they say and it doesn’t work I get disconnected from them in the beginning of the call they ask for a good call back number in case we get disconnected but when I get disconnected they never call back so after 3 times I give up just won’t buy netgear again support is bad and apparently if you try to get warranty to cover something they disconnect call so you will never get them to replace it

The AP setup was a breeze save a lot of time when setup needed to be done quick. The WiFi has a hard time on the second due to fluorescent noise. all in all would buy again.

I have the Netgear gear head package which has helped we fix all the issues however the issues still arise and I am quite bummed.

When I did get it setup, it had to be a wired connection because the wifi DOES. NOT. WORK. and now that I have had it for a few months, even the wired connection has stopped working for some reason that I can not figure out. This is the WORST router I have ever had the displeasure of dealing with. Absolute garbage, you would have a much better time buying a 20$ router from walmart.

Doesnt handle multiple devices very well. Smart Connect feature does not work. QoS doesnt handle traffic well. After waiting patiently for firmware updates to correct these issues knowing Netgear was committed to their products due to prior product experiences, after 4 updates in one year. It appears Netgear has dropped the ball BIG TIME with the RAX lineup. So many features are broken for $200... You have lost my decade+ of loyalty to Netgear networking products. Good Bye

I cannot find it so I can’t get help. Terrible experience and terrible router. Hulu works when I switch to cellular data but as soon as I turn on my Wi-Fi it errors.

I switch to the "smart connect" and it made it even worse on all my devices. Please don't advertise that it's better gaming experience with "smart connect" because it's really "stupid connect" as everything just keeps connecting then disconnecting. I upgraded from the R6250 to this AX3000. My R6250 ran better than this hunk of junk. The R6250 was running great till it started powering off by itself all the time. Think I'm done with Netgear products after this one.

After a total of 6 hours phone time troubleshooting the night hawk router apparently, possibly during a update deleted my WiFi. Luckily my IT vendor solved the problem! Disappointed that my under warranty Night Hawk router failed me. Tech support was adequate through the troubleshooting process with my ISP and NetGear.

I haven’t been able to get my printer connected to it yet, and i’m not sure how far of a radius it casts for wifi… but from what i’ve seen on my phone, staying fairly close to the router, it’s a huge improvement in speed.

Netgear I want to make a statement that on your devices we all know your hardware, router design and WiFi coverage are great but you lack big time in Firmware design, stability and most importantly features and that too when those all features are even provided by the cheap routers by Asus & TP-Link it's really should be a shame for Netgear and Shame for us being Netgear loyal customers we missing so much.

After 6 months it started to lose connection and would need a hard restart to fix. I ended up sending it back. Don't buy this. The RAX20 works but this is crap.

Admin password hard to change, and still the very last step of set up comes back with an error so set up cannot be completed. Worst router I have ever tried to set up.

The set up was very difficult and it was not as easy as just changing name and password. There was an increase in some through put, but eventually the speeds would shut down to 80 megs on some wireless channels. Just strange.

I've experienced bugs in - adding IP reservations - specifying a DNS primary/secondary server - login admin password reset - being able to access local resources over LAN but not WIFI. I thought I would be able to migrate easily from a Netgear R6220 that I was previously using. Not such tool available. Was not even able to manually port the backup configs over. I absolutely do not recommend this product until a serious firmware overhaul.

The UI is slow and hangs when trying to use. I could not be more disappointed in Netgear, cool box and name though. This product was all about marketing and zero about performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WiFi fails on RAX40 V1 This router was working fine until it hit the 3 month old mark where tech support now charges to get a replacement under the warranty. After having this router for 3 months, my v1 router no longer works reliably for WiFi, and I am now using my Mikrotik access point for WiFi after the RAX40. I took a chance on another Netgear thinking they had their mess together, but no it is still the same garbage they have been selling for some time. Many others have noted the loss of WiFi functionality I have found with this unit, and Netgear releases a patch that removes some functionality yet does not fix the failing WiFi with this unit. I have now switched to Mikrotik for my home use, and will eventually replace this unit also.

I’m just a regular person who has used various Netgear models since 1996 and my last setup was the CM500 and R6250. I’ve used the R6250 on cable and Fios, it always performed well for me. I recently gave my R6250 to a relative and accepted the “free” modem and 802.11ac router from Charter. The Charter router looked good on paper, but in actual use performed terribly. I rectified that problem by purchasing the AX4 when Walmart had it on sale. From unboxing to install to first use – took just under 22 minutes. I’m getting results of 480/24 on a 400/20 service, with 4 Roku’s, 5 laptops, 5 smartphones and 2 iPads, all pretty much doing something most of the time and I haven't noticed any negative impact to performance. On another note, Wi-Fi Calling on my iPhone stopped working with iOS 13. I tried everything to fix it, it’s important to me because I use my phone for work. Happened to visit my relative with my old R6250 last week and found Wi-Fi Calling to work again. Once I installed the AX4, Wi-Fi Calling came right back and working fine. Don’t know what it is with Netgear routers, but if you need that feature like I do, then you need to consider Netgear as your choice.

However, every once in a while when the power outrage happens, the router will go wild neither your password or the factory password works. I have to push the reset button. Then use computer to go through the initial setting. When I was upgrading the firmware the router died again. I have to push the reset button and go through the initial setting again. I was expecting a router should get back to normal after you turn off the power and turn it back on. But this router may not get back to normal after the power is back.

This is behind a cable modem only and I have tried to use it with 2.4G and 5G networks and multiple PCs, Android phones, and IOT devices. There will be drops of connections especially on 5G that occurs with phones and PCs. Isolated speed tests can show the full speed I pay for my ISP but web page loading can have unbearable pauses. I've tried using ISP DNS servers and Google DNS but the problem recurs. I am using the latest firmware as of May 26 2020. Rebooting will fix it for a few hours but then page loads will slow to a crawl. Using a competitors ancient N router results in stable and fast connections so I conclude the problem is not the ISP or ISP modem. Warrantee support is realistically 90 days because at this point I can not get support unless I pay $50 for a Gearhead contract. For all these reasons I strongly advise to look elsewhere for your WiFi router.

The firmware version 1.0.3.80 is a fiasco causing line drops and random deletion of security settings. Netgear promise about a new beta firmware for months. I contacted support for a copy and my request was simply ignored. Will not recommend any one to buy from Netgear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Avoid this model until NETGEAR fixes DHCP. I bought this router in March and put my R6220 in AP mode. 3 times since then DHCP has stopped working. Already connected devices work fine, but no new devices can connect because the router will not give them an IP address. You have to assign a static IP on the device and not all devices allow this. All 3 times I was able to get DHCP working again with a simple reboot. Today: a week past my 90 days free support, DHCP stops working for the 4th time, and nothing would bring it back. I tried rebooting, I applied a firmware update, access control, and various other settings. I found a post in the Netgear community full of messages from people looking for a fix for the same issue. I had 2 options; try a factory reset, spend all the time configuring, and wait for the same issue to come back, OR put the RAX40 in AP mode and make my old R6220 assume DHCP duties again. I went with the later. To be fair I never once over the years had a single issue with my R6220 as my only router, or as an access point. The RAX40 needs DHCP to be fixed before I can recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's A Great Nightlight and Paperweight! I bought this lovely nightlight from Amazon nearly a year ago and realized months later it was also a great paperweight! From day 1 I had concerns, but price and new AX capabilities had me ensnared. On day one I tinkered for hours, thinking my network engineering degree and decade of experience had failed me. I finally got it to a stable working environment. Then I moved to a new home, and this is where the devices true capabilities really accelerated. I've moved it to at least 3 different places in the homes because I thought the signal strength was bouncing in a weird way. I installed a new shielded twisted pair Cat5e cable to my ISP's modem, then configured connecting devices from scratch and reset the router to factory maybe a dozen times. The AP intermittently drops signal or access to the ISP's modem, 5G is literally unusable, AX mode doesn't function as intended (broadcasts but doesn't authenticate on either spectrum, standard configuration options are severely lacking even in "Advanced" mode, the mobile app is a joke as it provides no real configuration options, and throughput negotiates at one speed but transfers out at another. I literally can only use it on 2.4 for all devices. At this point, hiring a squirrel to sit on my roof with a tinfoil pole is probably more consistent than using this well-lit plastic rock. While most people are talking about how the detriments of COVID-19 was for years to come, I'll be talking about my experience with the AX4.

It supports both 2.5Ghz and 5Ghz separately and has an amazing iOS app to keep tabs on every device divided by 2.4Ghz, 5Ghz and wired devices. Also it has built in tool to test your internet speed and the history. Also a data traffic meter graph and the possibility to set up a guest Wi-Fi network and password so friends and others can have access but not be linked to your network. An amazing and strong signal network device for very reasonable price.

It took a while to setup and customize. eventually I got it working as I wanted after going through multiple DNS server pointers (it could not lock). My biggest gripe is the signal range, It works through walls in the back yard at 300 MB/s at 30ft. but I cant go into the 1st bedroom without losing the signal (25 feet away) the other direction. ??? I'm hoping the 5400 (RAX 50) with bigger antennas works better.

I followed the instruction to update the firmware. At first it seemed to be working very well, but unfortunately it isn't reliable, and I soon found it was dropping the signal. It drops at varying times, usually when I change from one web page to another, both in 2.4G and 5G, making it extremely frustrating. It is a very basic router and should work well. Apparently this router was on sale for a reason. Guess I should have paid more attention to the reviews.

It simply drops all connections and won't allow me to connect via the app to investigate. When it comes to the actual wifi service, my wife and son have brand new iPhone SE's, only my wife can connect. Starting from scratch five days before I move into a new home, and need to have a reliable Wifi connection as I'm working from home. Not a good look, Netgear!

(these days: UI speed = quality - few times Samsung 10 phone did not connect to wifi, I had to reboot Netgear router My sister has the same router and she noticed similar intermittent issues. Most of the time is working well, but since it is an expensive product I give only one star. Now I am not sure if Netgear has in general bad wifi routers with bad firmware quality. Possible they acquired other small companies with less 'quality' mindset. I will try Asus of Nest wifi.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Should have trusted the 1 star reviews The connection is unstable! I need to reboot the router almost every day. Wi-fi 2.4 and 5ghz is constantly dropping both on my computer and portable devices. I was expecting more from a 200$ wifi6 router. Please avoid my mistake! Look elsewhere!!
