Rated 5 out of 5 by from Garbage, constantly disconnects I've had this thing for maybe...half a year or so and for the first month it worked great with great speeds. I now want to smash this thing with a hammer everyday of my life. It constantly disconnects and makes me listen to that stupid disconnect/reconnect noise constantly. I hate this thing with a burning passion and nothing fixes it. Driver updates do absolutely nothing to fix the problem, this thing is just straight trash.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great but some problem It's great! But also experienced some problem... But i solved all the problem. I have one problem when starting the pc.. it can't detect the device. So i just unplug the usb cable and plug it in again and then it works. The second problem with dropped connection i solved with a right click on the wifi so the computer forgets the wifi. I press right click and forget and then connect again...fill in the password and then it was solved. Also a reset on the router can do the trick if you have dropped connections. Iv'e connected this device with several routers and sometimes i have to change frequency on the 5gz in the router setting so the adapter can find the wifi 5gz... otherwise it will not appear. This may be a solution for dropped connection to..i'm not sure of that but give it a go if the other things don't work. If anyone els has this problems.. try this it may help

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Its okay This adapter has been my adapter for 2 years now. It's good for gaming and watching and that's why it's 4 stars. It lost a star because of the disconnecting driver issue, but that was quickly resolved using microsofts drivers.

Then I had to go in and try and change some of the adapters settings in order for my wifi not to drop at random times. Now after 4 months, its having troubles being found as a device.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Poor speed & support. Software reinstall Zero I bought this over 6 months ago and almost returned it but COVID-19 made that impossible. Speeds are almost as slow as 2.4. Total waste of money. Even reinstall that was recommended made it worse.

Maybe they're running they Wifi Network on 2.4 Ghz and have too many of them in their building. I run my Wifi on 5 Ghz and reach 760 out of the 866 Mbps theoretical maximum. With samba file transfers between my NAS and my computer reaching 350 Mbps. I am using the default Windows 10 drivers.

Have reinstalled drivers multiple times, all other devices function perfectly fine. Don't buy it unless you're only planning on browsing facebook once a month

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works, when it works The only problem, and the most annoying, is that the device will "disconnect" from the computer, like it is not plugged in at all. I have tried multiple USB ports, front and back, with no succcess. I tried different software versions, both with the netgear app and the standalone. No other USB device does this on my computer, so it is specific to the adapter. Also, doesn't matter if I use the included extension or plug directly into the PC. It is so random too, it didn't disconnect at all yesterday, but today it did it many times, even after rebooting everything in the house. Frustrated me enough to get me to write this review... When it does stay connected it works well enough for me to work from home, occasional streaming and downloading, etc. Perfectly acceptable. It gets 2 stars because the disconnects are the absolute worst and I've spent so much time trying to get it to work only to realize there is nothing I can do, but pray it stays on.

I'm not sure what the threshold is, but it drops its connection to my WiFi network every time it takes a certain volume of data. I can tell this because my internet diagnostics resets the adapter every time it drops connection and it fixes it each time. I work from home and use VoIP constantly, and this performance is unacceptable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Decent Works decently, as expected, but constant driver issues. When I start my PC the driver doesn't load with Windows 7x64 and I have to disconect it from USB3.0 port and reconect it so the driver could be loaded. Sometimes seversl times.

And I have to do diagnosis all the time to make it work. Switching between 2.4G and 5G also seems unstable. I re-installed all drivers again and it didn't work. I am using Apple airport as router. Other devices in my house all work fine, so it cannot be my router problem. Conclusion: Don't waste your money.

I dont know what the bad review are talking about but it sounds like theres might be the installer?... just saying. These are straight up WYSIWYG... what you see is what you get... a wifi adapter that works all the dang time. WTG Netgear, you hit a home run on this one. P.S. in case you are wondering we used them at about 75% in the cradle and 25% out of the cradle... amazing product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another Example of Disconnecting I have had this device for about three weeks now and I am having the exact same issue it seems that everyone has with this... disconnecting constantly. Within a 8 hour time frame it will drop connection, as if it is being unplugged (it even gives the plug and play disconnect sound windows plays) and reconnect a few moments later. I have tried different drivers to remedy this situation but it appears that there is no fixing the issue.

Constantly disconnects, no matter what it is plugged into, no matter the USB port, no matter if the PC goes to sleep or stays awake. Randomly and at the worst times, drops connection and frequently requires to be unplugged and plugged back in before the device will see it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from this thing is solid. ran speed tests Hey so I've been working from home and was hardwired. Due to a flood I had to move my workstation upstairs away from the wifi setup. I am proably 1600 sq feet away with 1 wall and this thing is lightning fast. I was wondering because a co worker was compiling about his brand and I just did a speed test on googles speed test and ookla speed and both of them came back at just under 200 which is my max i think. Saw the low ratings of this unit and figured id write a solid review as i am impressed and pleased

I didn’t know whether I needed a whole new laptop but I asked a salesperson at the store if there was a quick fix and he recommended I try this. It was really easy to install and works perfect. I’ll eventually buy a new laptop when I can afford it but this is great for now, plus now Wi-Fi is actually faster.

The set up was so easy went by the directions and in about 15 min the speed was very fast. I like the idea that I can use another cord to bring it closer to my modem for a better signal I am glad I got this so I am ready for movies all winter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super helpful! This little gadget is super helpful. Are use this Wi-Fi adapter on an older laptop of mine that tends to struggle with connection and not have the best speed. This Wi-Fi adapter really helps extend the Wi-Fi and helps my computer speed things up a little bit more and I believe it is because of the Wi-Fi adapter that I am now able to navigate the Internet faster and with more ease.

I gained on average 25mb per second faster page loads which helps on auction sites. Set up was super easy with the provided disc. Like that it comes with an extra stand so it isn't hanging out the side of my laptop when I'm using it at work. Definitely recommend this nice wifi adapter. Quality product from a proven company.

It was very easy to install just by hooking it up into your USB port and walked through the steps. It significantly improved the WIFI connection I was receiving prior to having it. It even have excellent range to where I'm even able to get high speed internet working on my balcony and garage! I highly recommend!

This is a quick fix and saves me from spending another $700 on another laptop. Was easy to set up and has a pretty good range. Happy with the product.

I'm not sure of what new product that has an option to connect to wifi, that doesn't already have that tech capability apart of its design? If there is one, that item could also be outdated. So for antique technology might have use for this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Adapter worked fine until one month after Buy I bought this adapter a year ago, and after a month, I enjoyed it, but at the one month, mark was when I started to have lots of problems with the adapter because it kept on turning off by itself. I kept on using the adapter for 5 months with the same problem going on, so I decided maybe it's the drivers. So after finding the correct drivers from Netgear, I installed it, and it worked fine most of the time, but it still turned off by itself even on other computers I had. It was just a few days ago when I was browsing the web, and the adapter turned off again, so I did the usual of unpluggin the adapter and plugging it back in, but except this time it did not turn on. I am still impressed it even made it this far, but yes now it does not turn on in whichever computer it is plugged in and now I have to get a new adapter to connect to the wifi for my desktop.

The genie software on cd had simple instruction for installation with easy set up push n connect. This adapter provides faster connection, speed and range increased, and has a reliable connection for my browsing and streaming needs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Wifi Adapter So, I've had this for a few weeks now and it does a good job for adding Wifi to my desktop computer. I like really that the kit includes a long USB cord and dock making it easy to access it for easy pairing with my router. I did do a benchmark test on this to compare speeds etc compared with my wired ethernet connection. The Netgear adapter topped out at approximately 79.5 mbps versus the wired connection of 192.6 mbps. Very good performance for a wireless connector. Quite acceptable and robust for this type of connection. So, while it won't be my first choice (faster speeds with ethernet) I think this is a great adapter for older desktops. Also included is a Setup CD and there is a link provided for the software if you don't have DVD/CD drive.

It only sticks out as far as a flash drive so I can fully extend it for maximum reception. My signal is better and my connection is smoother and more stable.

The setup is easy and I like that it is USB 3 but the setup GUI is dated. Many PC's do not have disc drives so a plug and play option would have been better. It is a stylish piece of hardware and has a nice desktop dock but the adapter is quite big.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unfortunately only 802.11N after > 2 hours of trying to install including updating firmware. adjusting settings to ensure that 5ghz only was used and trying to force AC standard, I had to return the adapter to the shop for a refund. My old adapter worked perfectly well before and after the attempt with Netgear at 866.7 speed, so parameters of the router are correct. No problems with Firewall nor other interference from other drivers, since I deinstalled them. Disappointing

In the mean time, I had the old one, which did not have WiFi, refurbished so I could have a second work station in another room in the house. It would not have been practical to run an Ethernet cable from our port to the computer. I asked the Staples computer technician what he would recommend so our old machine would be able to use our home WiFi. He recommended the NETGEAR AC 1200. It was very easy to install the software and connect the USB device. Then I entered our WiFi password, and we were off and running. Very simple and economical.

I really was not sure what to expect, but I am glad I got this adapter. I now have more power, signal and reception which is what I was after. The set up was easy and though I do wish it was a bit smaller in size, I love that it has improved my laptops abilities.

I'm also not very techy and was grateful for how easy it is to set up/use. Super awesome. This wireless adapter is perfect, it allowed me to put my office in the room that I wanted, just down the hall. The connection speed appears to be the same as when it was wired and it is a Dell desktop over 7 years old. I do not have a problem with the size of the adapter in its desktop dock, it really does not take up much space at all. Overall, this is a great product that met my expectations and I would recommend it.

With everyone working from home, the connection just hasn't been as good as it was in the past. I was happy to find this WiFi adapter helped solve my problem. I could not be happier with the Adapter and the combination of all three Netgear Products provides an incredible level of performance on my desktop [which is where I use the adapter] and throughout my two level home. I was super frustrated by this, and would not recommend. It was a whole to-do with my tech team from work, and was certainly not worth it.

It worked well initially every time, but after a while I noticed my computer slowing down and causing me problems. I read articles/instructions, but as stated, I’m not technically equipped to understand all the details of what to do to possibly fix my problems. I’m sure more computer-savvy users will have more success and find this to be helpful. Net Gear has some great products, but this one just isn’t right for me.

It is a breeze to set up and install and is very unobtrusive on my desktop. I have a very fast WIFI speed obtained with this device. The setup disc that is included with this product is useless as I don't use cd-rom anymore, however included with the setup guide is a web link to the installation program for those who has systems without cd-roms. All in all this is a great product.

Uninstall\reinstall, new Genie\Standalone\Mediatek OEM tried, all unsuccessful. Seems to be a commonly reported issue - not sure how this is on the market anymore, honestly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've never hated technology this much When it's actually connected to my network it works just fine, but whenever I need to download anything to my pc, it gives up and disconnects from my network. Sometimes it's so bad it will force my mouse and/or keyboard to stop working. I have never been so displeased by a worthless piece of junk in my life. Please stay away from this adapter, you'll be better off using any garbage left behind on trash day.

I used to only be able to use the 2G wi-fi on it but since I plugged this in I can now connect to the 5G, which is great. What I didn't like about it was the fact that it came with a CD-ROM to install it like something from back in the 90s. I think a corresponding app would be a lot more efficient than installing a software. Otherwise I like it.

That downgrade came with a poor wifi card as well. I live in a two-bedroom apartment and struggled to stay connected to the internet until I began to test this adapter. The USB connector is super convenient and portable, and it is able to help my pitiful laptop stay connected to the wifi in my already tiny apartment. I would recommend this to anyone whose laptop or desktop experiences similar issues.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Speeds 3 rooms away! I just bought this product this evening, installed the drivers from the included CD, plugged in the device, and boom! Good to go. I'm not sure what everyone is complaining about, this product works fine and 3 rooms away from the router, I only lose about 1-5% of my network speed on 5 ghz. Ping and latency response times of an Ethernet connection. No issues. I pay for 240 MBPS internet, and with this adapter 3 rooms away from my router, I get about 238 MBPS, which is nothing to complain about. Great product Netgear, just wish it was a little cheaper. See below my speed test.

This adapter, when connected is actually a decent adapter. The issue comes when you want to play a game or use an application that requires a steady connection. This adapter disconnects CONSTANTLY basically eliminating the chance of playing any online games or being in any sort of online call. It is the most frustrating piece of technology I have ever attempted to use. Along with this, NETGEAR has 0 fix for this issue, and will not even acknowledge that it's super common. DO NOT BUY THIS ADAPTER.

I've never had this much trouble with a wifi adapter and I work in computer/network support, so I've used a few different types thru the years. It doesn't matter if it plugged into my computer or any other, it will cut out randomly, stop working in the middle of games or downloads, fail to initialize and just suddenly decide it doesnt want to connect to any network. Netgear got there $60, will not ever get my money again.

I eventually found this wifi adapter to use on my personal PC for gaming and work and I almost don’t even notice a difference between it and Ethernet. I’m still able to have consistent quality wifi with no interruption for work or gaming. Highly recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wifi Life Saver Just moved into a new apartment, and my modem and router are in my living room, and my desktop computer is in my bedroom, and I could not figure out how to get my computer to connect to the internet, so I bought this handy dandy gadget and boom I’m connected to the wifi. It was not that easy to install and set up though, the CD software that came with it did not work, so I had to use my son’s laptop to download the software from the website onto a USB stick and then transfer that to my desktop computer to be able to get it to work, and I was on the phone with net gear customer service for over an hour trying to figure it out but the representative was very patient with me and we finally got it working!

For example I would use the Ethernet cable to connect a DVD player to the computer and when I make a bridge connection with the Wi-Fi adapter already on the computer, I can then use the Netgear USB adapter and use the mobile hotspot on the computer and choose to share my internet connection from netgear USB Wi-Fi adapter that’s connected to the internet. I like it.

Tried reinstalling drivers and older drivers multiple times, connection lasts a few hours to mere seconds before disconnecting again. I know the issue is not with my wifi itself as i can connect on multiple devices with no problem. Driver updates and software downloads do not fix the problem. Now that we moved it’s too difficult to hard wire my computer so I tried this USB device and it works great. I only do large downloads of programs/updates and videos and so far this is just as fast as my wired connection. I had doubts, but they are gone now! This little device is great!

There are fixes posted on forums that do not work, the problem will still persist. Especially for gaming, this adapter will get you booted from just about every game due to the frequency of disconnects. Take your money elsewhere!!! This adapter has singlehandedly guaranteed me to never buy a netgear product again.

I got this for Christmas for myself and the speeds were good until about a month and then I would constantly get unstable connection and I know it isn't my internet because I have plenty of other devices with internal wifi or wired through ethernet this is the only device I have problems with.

It also has dualband features which let's me choose the speed and connections to avoid interference! This is super convenient and handy if you dont have onboard wifi in your rig. However, I do feel it might be best for a pc rig vs laptop. Its secure but if you are accident prone with portability like me it could get wrecked.

I had an AC 600 Linksys adapter, but the speed was pathetic. Since buying and installs the Netgear AC 1200, I have a good connection and adequate speed on the dated PC. I recognize that the age of the PC and it’s processor a a part of the problem but the new adapter has improved my speed trmendously

I’m not sure if it really makes a difference considering you need WiFi to use it, but happy to have it in my electronic stash.

But the software constantly eats over 50% of my cpu usage, and sometimes it will crash on Windows 8.1. It also seems I can't disable Roam Tendency, and it will always switch to another weaker AP. (Even if I add filter on the router, it will still try to connect and end up disconnecting

I was definitely thankful that it was only the adapter (which I had had for 10 years!)

When using this product, however, I believe the product itself buffers network packets. Which means if you're watching a video it's no problem, and speed tests will all show high throughput. They don't, however, show that it's constantly stuttering in any multiplayer video game.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing So at first i didnt know much sbout it i did as any 23 year old would do, I completly tore into the thing plugged it in and expected it to work but as i did i quickly learned that that wasnt how things worked now im not saying that its a hassle or anything to download the driver by no means i just lacked to pay attention to detail but as i did i quckly picked up on how to use it and now that i do almost a year in the use of it i have to say it is amazing. It has not only given me longer range but faster speed. Thank you netgear.

I used to have issues with connection, especially in my bedroom, and now it’s way better - no more slow and intermittent connection which makes me super happy. Set up was easy; I do not have a CD drive on my computer, so I went to the website, download the driver, plug the USB into the computer, and that’s it – set up was successful. The instructions were also included. While I love this USB adopter, it is a bit of inconvenience when moving the laptop around because the adopter sticks out of the USB port. However, I am happy that it gets the job done.

Also really not sure how much this actually even helped, honestly could not tell a difference from when it was in use versus not in use. The speed is awesome, you get the latest 802.11 AC Internet max Wi-Fi protocol through the hi speed USB 3port. I don’t even notice that it’s not hardwired. I’m very pleased with my choice. I read the latest tech mag comparisons/reviews and I agree it’s the best buy now.

I did not want to run my ethernet cable up the stairs or through any walls. This was the simplest solution. I was worried because I heard that it was very difficult to load on my computer. I was so happy because the genie did everything for me basically. I am very happy with this product. It was easy to load on my computer, and it works like a charm.

Got hit again and lost the ethernet adapter on the motherboard. Started to research a PCI card, found this incredible device that not only was easy to setup but increased my internet speed by nearly 100 megabytes, getting 235 megabytes per second. I guess that even a desktop can be wireless.

Since I used it as recommended in the user manual and had the drivers up-to-date I think it wasn't my fault at all. Since I still have over 10 years old wifi usb sticks, that still work, I can't recommend this one. It is really sad, since I was happy with Netgear devices so far.

However, navigating the website to find the required resource was rather difficult. I am somewhat okay with computers and it took me quite awhile to figure this out. Other purchasers had this problem and the CSR response to questions was not helpful. Also, the USB is very wide and my ports are very close together making it impossible to use the adapter simultaneously with another USB device. The optional connecting cable is cumbersome.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Education use is my situation To put in my words, It's been a trying few months for me. Stretching my every dollar to make, sure my little boy, his mom and myself are afloat. This product came into sight as I seen the price. It was already discounted when I purchased it. Retail, if my memory serves, was 71.00$. it was discounted at 47.00$ when I spotted it. It wasn't until I checked out, that the CSR told me 18.30$ was my grand total. I was eccentric! I saved 77$ in thinking I was going to spend 100$ minimum. But the experience from unboxing, to setup, to registration for warranty, and account creation, simply a breeze. I'd say I spent no more than 7 minutes doing all of this and the product was setup. I don't have any problems to report with it so far. It hasn't kicked me off, disconnected in any way. It's lightning quick, so my much reaction is excellent for this item! I'd actually highly recommend it to anyone who is in need of something like this! Thank you Netgear! Money saver, Stress reducer, and I get to keep some of my remaining hairline too! All pluses in my opinion. As I have a liking to keeping my hair! Baldness wouldn't look good on me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Perfect I tried to just plug and play. Once I realized it wouldn’t work, I decided to do the opposite of what us men do, I read the instructions. I downloaded the update, now it downloads and uploads exactly how it should. Very good range. Probably why it was on the clearance rack for half off at Walmart. Win win for me and a little bit of reading skills and patience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast, Easy Setup; Fast Wi-Fi Great Wi-Fi Router. Easy setup. Almost tripled the speed I can surf the internet compared to my old, somewhat dated router. Wish I could use it when running Linux, but that's not something I need every day.
