The major flaw is that it blocks the Thunderbolt port. Lenovo's support tells me that you cannot use both ports at the same time. So, very very poor design of an expensive laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad)! Better spend money on faster WI-FI or cheep c-USB/Ethernet adapter, at least c-USB/Ethernet adapter will have use beyond your current ThinkPad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple, but effective, adapter for those with LAN Given the limited space on most laptops for a LAN connection, this dongle allows one to connect to a LAN, in this case using Lenovo's proprietary tiny "LAN" port. It works well, offers much higher transmit speeds than WiFi and much greater security to boot, since your computer won't be transmitting radio signals as you work! Lenovo also offers another adapter for LAN to USB3 for those machines with that type of port.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not worth it It makes absolutely no sense to buy this adapter instead of a generic USB-C / Ethernet adapter. - It's impossible to use this adapter on a Carbon X1 laptop at the same time as a USB-C cable in the adjacent port, because of the size of the ThinkPad Ethernet Extension Adapter Gen 2 connector and the position of the port on the laptops (right next to the USB-C connector. - There's no significant performance difference between a ThinkPad Ethernet Extension Adapter 2 Gen 2 and a generic USB-C / Ethernet adapter.

In order to connect to an RJ45 connector there are two choices, one is to use an USB to RJ45 adapter leaving only one USB port available. The second is to purchase this adapter which is well built and has been working effectively.

I think this was somehow done intentionally based on the molding on the connector, probably has to do with power out of the multi-connector. Plug feels firm at the moment, so it appears it will not easily pull out of the laptop, time will tell however. Works at gigabit speeds so; so I'm happy.

Compact - easy to throw in the bag with the laptop, mouse, etc. Not sure why Lenovo chose to produce a premium laptop in the T490s without an ethernet port. Not all of us spend all of our time in the office on a docking station. The T490s is still a great machine, just a little disappointed that I have to use an adapter for a cabled ethernet connection.

Although pricey and should have been included with lap top, I would still recommend getting it it you want to connect effortlessly to ethernet RJ45 connector. You can get USB to ethernet adapters also but sometimes cause other issues. Using the ThinkPad adapter does block one USB-type C port.

I'm subtracting one star from my rating though because the manufacture date on the adapter shows 2012 (I purchased this in 2021). Also the serial number and part number listed on the adapter's ID sticker do not match the packing list provided by Lenovo, which complicates asset tracking.

My only gripe: slot for this extension is too close to one of the USB-C slots and is impossible to use both simultaneously. Extension's connector is pretty narrow already; the problem in laptop's design.

This is basically one of the saddest purchases you must make for an overall great laptop because they do not give you a second usb-c port on the carbon notebooks.The "lock-in" for the adapter is just sad.

Only took off one star because on my ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6G the port for this adapter and one of the Thunderbolt/USB-C ports are so close together that using one prevents using the other. This may not be an issue on other models of ThinkPads.

I would of course prefer a stationary LAN port on my ThinkPad, but this one is an OK alternative too, because it uses a dedicated port and leaves free the valuable USB ports.

The device-specific port and connector cable do the job, but the attachment of the connector to the port blocks access to the thunderbolt connector port on my Lenovo T490s. In other words using this device blocks access to the most useful port on the laptop. If you are going to buy a hub to work with the Thunderbolt port, then skip this cable and get a hub with an ethernet port

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Proprietary Connector Needs to be Standardized I don't understand why Lenovo feels the need to have a proprietary connector for the ethernet dongle. If it chooses to do so, then the cable should be provided with the system so that a user doesn't have to spend additional money for one. While the system does come with WIFI, it is a huge miss for not being able to connect to LAN line for stable connection. This feels like nickel-and-dime a customer. For the record, I did call Lenovo to request for a free cable, but it never came even though the customer representative told me I would get one. I travel for work, so I need this dongle, which at the end, I bought one because I couldn't wait for it from Lenovo. It does work when using it with the Yoga X13.

The thing is that the sides of the input cable that plugs into the X13 port covers up 1/2 of the usb-c port As I discovered when I purchased a webcam with a USB-C connection. My conclusion? The ports are too close to each other on the lenovo x-13.

I guess I could chop off one side of the connector housing to allow the USB C port to be used but I suspect that will cause issues.

It is just what I needed for connecting the laptop to ethernet when I am not using a docking station. It makes file transfer a lot faster than when using wifi. It seems to be well made.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well - as advertised This is a proprietary adapter for the ThinkPad and avoids using a USB port. My network tests showed it ran at full speed and zero overhead to slow the adapter down. Well worth the money. Remember a USB ethernet adapter will use your CPU to handle a lot of the process and create overhead.

It arrived safely, is the correct item (4X90Q84427), but won't plug into my ThinkPad X1 Extreme 2nd Generation, model 20QV-0007US! Its plug is too large for the ethernet socket, and indeed will not fit in any of the sockets. Customer Service insisted this is the correct item for my specific laptop (by serial number) - until I sent them a close-up photo. There is an error somewhere! (sigh)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ThinkPad Ethernet Extension Adapter Gen 2 Since Lenovo decided to no longer incorporate RJ45 connectors in the new T-series Thinkpads, this adapter is a must. It adds another cable to carry around and if you need it where you are, another dongle hanging off the side of the laptop, however, there are no problems with functionality and it does work well.

The USB-C port seems to be build upside down as the gap is on the left side. It should be between the USB-C and the Ethernet connection. Wow.

Super frustrating as now I have to purchase I USB splitter so I can use all my peripherals.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really, spacing flaws when using all connections! On my Thinkpad T90s, spacing on left hand side connectors are not adequate. If you use this device you loose one of your spare connections. This is identified in the manual "Note: The Ethernet extension connector Gen 2 and the adjoining Thunderbolt 3 connector (USB-C) cannot be used simultaneously." Probably would be resolved if wide of connection for this product was reduced?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Using this means you lose access to USB Type C The only issue is that the USB Type C outlet cannot be used as the ethernet connector restricts the access to the Type C outlet. Since there is no gain or loss in using the USB Type B adaptor and since there is another Type B outlet available on the right side, I would recommend using the Type B instead of this adaptor. I didn't realize this before otherwise I would not have bought it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bad engineering - blocks thunderbolt port access The adapter blocks the usage of the thunderbolt port simultaneously with the adapter. It is just bad engineering, Nothing to do with connectivity. Some people have used sandpaper to get the profile of the adaptor down to fit another slimed down USB-c/thunderbolt cable, but this shouldn’t have to be the case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Poorly designed adapter blocks thunderbolt 3 port! Very poor design. I purchased this adapter tor my Gen 6 X1 Carbon. Unless I'm missing something, the problem is that when the adapter is plugged into its port, it blocks one of the two Thunderbolt 3 ports on the Carbon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why name it Gen 2 if it doesn't fit the Gen 2? Does not fit the ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 - in fact, there is no adapter for the P1 Gen 2 that fits the mini Giagabit ethernet port. Not sure what you are supposed to do if you want to use an ethernet connection on that laptop outside of a USB adapter, which defeats the purpose of the ethernet port.
