And I'm keeping the smaller 7 inch version for myself. I prefer the smaller foot print. This device is mainly for video calling during quarantine. It is also at my kitchen sink where I regularly use it while washing dishes or cooking. A worthy purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pretty good It works really well, 2 main gripes are that it can't join audio groups with other Google home devices and it doesn't have full Chromecast capabilities. I can cast you tube videos to the screen but not Netflix which is a bit annoying. With a regular Google home and a Chromecast I can tell the home what show I want to watch on which app and have it open.

We have placed the display in our kitchen, which makes it very convenient for cooking timers, music, recipes, and Duo video chats from one of the most lived in rooms of the house. Very pleased. Only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 was because you cannot cast Netflix to this device. Not sure if this is a Lenovo thing or a Netflix thing, but either way, it is the only knock I have against this as opposed to a Nest Hub Max or something like that. Otherwise, fantastic purchase and I highly recommend!

The camera is a great feature but thankful for the security measure of providing the ability to block it off. I like how it lays horizontally and also can stand. Love that it has a built-in camera (unlike other smart displays on the market). Nice size and doesn't take up too much counter space. Video quality and audio is good, but sometimes the Google Assistant is glitchy - could be user or app's fault, but overall nothing wrong with the Lenovo Smart Display. Also love that we can easily stream music and podcasts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Google assistant and more Ever since its release two years ago I've been using the Google Home products as the core of my smart home. My only complaint was that a display of some sort would make it more useful. I got the Insignia product with the LED clock which was good for replacing the basic alarm clock, but still not enough. Then I saw the announcement for the Lenovo Smart Display during CES,. I was not disappointed in this product. Finally the device becomes much more than the original. Beyond just the basics of controlling lights and answering questions. I love that when you ask a for the weather you get the voice response and the screen shows both the hourly and 3-day forecast. Almost anything you request comes up with related and relevant information. I love the clock face which is essential for use as a bedside alarm clock. Video playback is good, but I don't use that very much. I'm looking forward to when they get portrait mode working for most everything. I'd like to see more screen integration for voice commands. Not sure what they have in plans for new/improved features but I can't wait to find out. Best voice assistant available.

Also the design is smart and looks great anywhere. I got it's an upgrade to my Google Home and with screen, does more. Also works without problems from New Zealand. Got the 8" version and feel the 10" is to big. Well worth buying, and worth upgrading your Google Home. Also love how it plays you tune, which looks nice and crisp on the screen and seeing live news is great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A new form factor that exceeded my expectations I liked the looks of the Lenovo 8" Smart Display so much that I bought two of them at the same time. I use one as a companion in my office so I can give voice commands for what I want it to do. It always recognizes my commands and executes them in short order. The display is excellent--clear and crisp, and when I want to listen to music its speakers give a full sound in all frequencies. I also like the touch screen, especially when I use the one in the kitchen. I use it to look up recipes for ingredients and cooking instructions. Like the one on my desk, the kitchen unit will be there for a long time. It has not failed me once in finding a recipe I asked for, and I keep it on during the preparation stage and cooking, consulting it frequently. It looks good and performs well. Overall I think the form factor was the most important element when I bought them, and now that I have used them, their performance is excellent--both do more than I though I would use them for. The voice control for playing podcasts isn't great, and when selecting to cast a podcast from my phone it'll sometimes play the last music playlist I had selected instead. This is all from Google play music. The speaker quality is very good and I quite enjoy using the display for recipes and cooking.

The 8" screen is bright, vivid and just the right size without being overwhelming. The sound is really good compared to the Google Home Hub. The microphones pick up really well. My only issues so far are that voice phone calls were broken with an update right before I purchased it. And that was one of the main reasons I bought it. And that the device seems to have problems staying connected to WiFi sometimes. I assume these issues will be worked out in an update soon, but Lenovo really needs to work hard on getting updates out in a timely manner. This isn't something they have a good track record on with their other products, so we'll see. I think if the "R5" update I've read about doesn't happen by January 31, 2019 (holiday return deadline), they're going to see a LOT of returns on this product. I like the fact that you can shutter the camera lens for privacy or if you are paranoid. Since day 1 have not been able to make voice calls. Based on comments on the blog not much is being done to remedy the problem. I would call that poor customer service! Wouldn't buy another Lenovo product based on my experience so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great compliment to a Google home. We already had Google minis in various rooms to control lights, or turn on the TV with voice command. This unit ties it all together. We have it on the kitchen counter, and it is currently controlling the Christmas Tree lights. We just tell Google to turn on the lights, and boom, done. My sons watch the previous night's hockey highlights on it while eating breakfast before school, and my wife uses it to see who is at the door via a Nest doorbell. The speaker is very good, much better than the minis. It plays Spotify tunes flawlessly. Also, we use it for video chat via Duo with the kids, and it features a manual switch to shut off the camera which my wife appreciates. Great purchase.

After logging into google you can set the screen saver to use your photos. Using google Duo you can make smart video calls. My wife put this in her kitchen and uses it to display recipes all the time. I highly recommend this smart display if looking for a visual google smart assistant. But unable to connect with Google Home in last app version (workaround - install previous version of Home app), don't work outgoing Duo video calls (incoming are working well), has sound noise in standby mode (didn't find any solution with this issue), overall work is rather slow.

I would like to say where and when the photo was taken, for example "My front yard, June 2017". Also if you want to sell a ton of these devices allow a user to link to Reddit to show photos with a minimum number of up votes from a specified subreddit. Then advertise this device on Reddit with this feature.

Decided to give Google Assistant a try with this 8" unit. My wife was so impressed with the cookbook features she took it for the kitchen and I ordered a second one for myself in the living room. Great device. Integrated easily with our Wink hub for home automation. The screen adds better functionality over just a speaker for things like recipes, weather, and searches. No problem having both systems in the house. Each has it’s own strengths. I think the Echos have better sound for music, Google does better answering questions. I enjoy the photo album slideshow.

Note, this is not a tablet, which is what I was sort of originally expecting, but it works for its intended usage extremely well. Ambient mode (the picture slideshow) is its most used feature, and implemented well. It's nice to use the voice control for watching/casting Youtube videos and control a smart plug. Search is OK, seems to be somewhat limited in where it can get info. It would be nice if it was easier to navigate maps and use portrait mode. A big ask would be if it could handle multiple languages, but that is a much more difficult problem, and more a Google ecosystem issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Looking Device with Good Sound The 8" Lenova Smart Display looks great. We installed in our master bathroom and use it to get updated each morning on the news and whats happening around the world. We also stream our local NPR station as it works better than an antenna (we live in the country). The sound is also nice and full for a device this small. My only gripe is the fact that I often have to say "Hi Google" more than once to get the unit to take what I requested. I have not used it to control any household devices. Thta is something I will try in the future. All in all, this is a great unit and I'm very happy I bought it! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than Google Home Hub Very good alternative to the Google Home Hub. The addition of the camera and the physical slider is great. I love that we receive lots of updates. The speakers are pretty good too, but the also won't receive any rewards; I'd call them better than the Google Home Mini but DEFINITELY not as good as the Home Max. This is so disappointing as the only reason that I got the Lenovo smart display is for the video calling feature . Please help Lenovo to remedy this!

In my family we speak English and Spanish, and have Google assistant all over the house. We speak Spanish and English to them and everything works except for the smart display.

Great for playing music and for hearing recipe instructions. Love the display. Crystal clear picture and I love the visuals that play during requests. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this device!! I Bought both the 10'" and th 8" to try them out. Love them both! The 8" is the perfect size for the bedroom and work great as an alarm clock AND assistant. The morning routine is awesome and I love the ability to listen to the news and get a visual on videos if needed via the screen! There is a transition period where one experiences a new way of interacting via voice but I'm finding it to be relatively painless. The video calling is great to have in multiple rooms and the size of the screen is fantastic! Can't wait for future upgrades!

The audio still works, but no matter how I tried to reset it according to the Lenovo forum, the display is still not showing. Very disappointed at this product. Will be returning!

I can ask the device to play music from my playlists, look up recipes and ask it to turn on my living room lights. I'm sure there's even more I could be doing with it but very happy so far!

A few key features expected reduced the overall rating, but expect these to be added sooner than later. Ability to add the device to a group is crucial. Adding the ability to continue communication is just required.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from from an APPLE everything person..... Pleasantly surprised, bought it so my grandmother with dementia can utilize. Didn’t want a tablet bc there’s too much effort to get in to get it started and find apps. With the smart display it’s constantly on and she can talk to it. She can also video chat with the family (which was the selling point). The video is sharp and the sound isn’t pretty impressive. I took away the star bc the setup was such a headache. After going through the process it continued to say that there was an error and could not initialize...multiple times. Took hours. Finally got it working then found out that You can only video chat through Google Hub And you need a cell number; can’t use an email. And my 90+ grandmother does not own a cellphone. So I had to connect mines....meaning I cannot video chat with her and sometimes the google calls bypass the Display and come to my cell directly. Also there is so little troubleshooting help on the site or through Google for this issue. Despite this issue I really love the display. Hoping Google duo can update the app to use email and make this more seamless. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better Communication is needed - Great Gear Though Highly disappointed that the rest of my order was cancelled and it took over a month to let me know. Other than that, the Smart Display is fine. I also have a Lenovo ideapad Y700 as my daily-user laptop at the office. Lenovo does make great gear.
