General-purpose test automation tool for QA teams who want to perform functional testing of client/server applications.

Lowers learning curve for testers discovering the value of test automation processes

Enables experienced test-automation engineers to uncover more defects by extending their test scripts with conditional logic to cover more of the application, and to define test cases to call external DLLs or executables

Provides test cases for common objects such as menus, lists and bitmaps, and specialized test cases for objects specific to the development environment

Includes built-in test management, and integrates with the tools in the IBM Rational Unified ProcessĀ® for defect tracking, change management and requirements traceability

Supports multiple UI technologies for everything from Java, the Web and all VS.NET controls to Oracle Forms, Borland Delphi and Sybase PowerBuilder applications.

Benefits
implifies configuration testing - Rational Robot can be used to distribute functional testing among many machines, each one configured differently. The same functional tests can be run simultaneously, shortening the time to identify problems with specific configurations.
Simplifies configuration testing - Rational Robot can be used to distribute functional testing among many machines, each one configured differently. The same functional tests can be run simultaneously, shortening the time to identify problems with specific configurations.
Ensures testing depth - Tests beyond an application's UI to the hundreds of properties of an application's component objects - such as ActiveX Controls, OCXS, Java applets and many more - with just the click of a mouse
Tests custom controls and objects - Rational Robot allows you to test each application component under varying conditions and provides test cases for menus, lists, alphanumeric characters, bitmaps and many more objects.
Provides an integrated programming environment - Rational Robot generates test scripts in SQA Basic, an integrated MDI scripting environment that allows you to view and edit your test script while you are recording.
Helps you analyze problems quickly - Rational Robot automatically logs test results into the integrated Rational Repository, and color codes them for quick visual analysis. By double-clicking on an entry, you are brought directly to the corresponding line in your test script, thereby ensuring fast analysis and correction of test script errors.
Enables reuse - Rational Robot ensures that the same test script, without any modification, can be reused to test an application running on Microsoft Windows XP, Windows ME, Windows 2003, Windows 2000, Windows 98 or Windows NT.

IBM Rational Robot - license + 1 Year Software Subscription and Support - 1 is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Robot For the tool that i was trying to use it on, it had a lot of errors that we couldnt resolve and was unable to determine whether it was due to the way the script was created or if it was software. But it was years ago, so maybe it has improved now.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great in applicaton availability monitoring I have used Rational Robot for application availability monitoring for years. And I must say that this product is powerful when my kind of use is the case.Ability to do complex tests and dynamic responses to situations with manually created test code is very good thing. If you have problems with sqa-basic you can call any language based script when needed during test phase. Allthough this needs quite a lot practise to handle all the benefits of the product.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Robot is appropriately being EOLd Robot was an integral part of our testing efforts, but was also a major pain point with its visual basic-based language, clunky interface, and poor reporting. Rational Functional Tester (RFT) is a preferable choice now that there is an alternative to Robot for GUI-based testing. One of the benefits that we actually did enjoy was the flexibility of use with object comparators, but overall, Robot was an archaic tool. If you are looking for a GUI-testing tool from IBM, go with RFT.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great except for .net Using this product for testing new versions of applications and everything is great until we run applications that use the .net frameworks. Our test machines lock up and the testing stalls at that point. Also difficult to use with Delphi written applications, but I think I'm an exception to the rule for this one.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Rational Robot This product was easy to use after using RFT for many years, but many features of the tool are out dated and crash many times a day on simple applications. The main feature that crashes is Inspector and occurs many times in a day, which is very frustrating. This product needs to be updated to handle browser upgrades and the inconsistency of it's tools.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Simple yet functional Rational Robot is an excellent tool for a new tester to get his/her feet wet with automation. The basic features are easy to use and the ability to include custom code allows deeper customization for advanced users. Its to bad support and innovation for this tool has decreased, it now lags behind the newer tools.
