IBM Lotus Sametime Unified Telephony software is an add-on offering to IBM Lotus Sametime Standard or IBM Lotus Sametime Advanced software. The software is designed to help users more easily access and manage telephone communications directly inside the Lotus Sametime or IBM Lotus Notes client with an appropriate Sametime license or in the context of another business application. The software middleware layer helps simplify connecting into multiple PBX systems along with audio and video conferencing systems.

With Lotus Sametime Unified Telephony, users are assigned one callable number - their unified number. Users can set their locations and preferred phone devices for making and receiving calls made to that number. Users can also choose to use their computers as phone devices, using the built in microphone and speakers, and Lotus Sametime Unified Telephony. Within the Lotus Sametime client, colleagues can see a user's Lotus Sametime status, and also the user's phone status from Lotus Sametime Unified Telephony.
