Without the hub, I cannot keep the 2-1 plugged in as well as connect to an external monitor at the same time. The port replicator allows me to connect my power supply, along with a VGA / HDMI cable for external viewing, as well as adds a few USB 3.0 ports for additional connectivity. The usb-c cable is long enough, about 14" to connect the port replicator easily and not have it hang off the side. There is one down side. I have an older Samsung monitor, and for some reason, Samsung goes with a slightly different VGA cable configuration as most monitors. The screen shows up slightly on the dark side when I plug into the port replicator. The HDMI port works fine, but I prefer VGA because of the higher resolution.
