The good and the bad of the HP Omen MAX 16
The unit came in and started up flawlessly. I thought the games (Ark & Grounded 2) looked great, but then I turned HDR on and they looked AMAZING! The system is a BEAST and handles everything I throw at it.
I configured mine with the Ultra 7 to minimize heat generation and the 5080 because I couldn't justify an extra $700 just for the 5090. I also got 64 gb of ram because that was a reasonably priced upgrade and I heard it was difficult to upgrade that on your own.
It is heavy, but I knew that if I wanted the power of a PC in a laptop, I would have to make some sacrifices.
My only gripe is that the power plug is big and gawdy. And I'm not talking about the power adapter - which is a monster. But the plug itself protrudes roughly 2" out of the center of the back. In the grand scheme of things this is a non-issue, but it concerns me that if bumped, it would break easily.
All things considered, becuase I travel a lot and cannot reasonably drag my gaming PC with me, this serves as both my personal computer, and gaming counsel with the ability to fit in my back pack.
I'd recommend it all day based on performance. But I have yet to have an issue with it and see how customer care is. I hope I never have to find out.

A pleasant surprise
An absolutely pleasant experience compared to other top-of-the-line Windows laptops. As a Mac user for a decade, I had numerous concerns and preconceptions. But they were dispelled almost immediately. The only downside that still spoils the impression is the keyboard layout. Why can't it be made standard for all laptops so that muscle memory doesn't suffer, and typing is equally pleasant on all devices? And then there's the weight of the device — there's room for improvement there.

Fast and Smooth
I’ve been using this laptop daily for about a month now and have also run a few performance tests. While I haven’t tried it with any truly resource-intensive games yet, my experience so far has been very positive. The system feels fast, responsive, and smooth in everyday use.

Dream laptop, the only few problems are the included accessories or information
I received this laptop on May 15th, as of writing it is July 15th so it’s been two months since I received it, and so far it has been a very worthwhile purchase.
It runs everything so smoothly and was a drastic change from my previous laptop, which was an OMEN 15 from 2018 with a gtx 1060 for reference. I loved the old laptop, but it was 7 years old and having issues, so I went with OMEN again due to the price, available customizations, and my good experience with my previous OMEN laptop.
This laptop does not disappoint in the slightest. Mine has a 5070ti and I7 Super, 32gb of ram, 2TB of storage. It’s been so enjoyable to use, it runs with better specs than a lot of modern desktops, though the specs are specifically designed for laptops so they may be less efficient compared to their desktop equivalent.
So far, I have only encountered 3 things that I believe could receive some improvement, but they aren’t at the fault of the laptop itself:
1) The user manual that comes with the order does not detail the use of the OMEN hub in a couple of ways that could be better clarified. In the performance control tab of the OMEN hub there are 4 different modes. ECO, Balanced, Performance, and Unleashed. ECO, Balanced, and Performance are all explained pretty clearly, but the Unleashed mode isn’t as clear. It does state that it will unlock power limits to certain parts so the user can overclock (basically running the computer at a higher speed than originally designed). However, it does not clearly inform the user what the level of wattage will change performance or usage wise relative to the 4 options provided.
-The 4 options do have a general concept defined in their info bubble, but not a specific answer that an introductory user can understand as easily.
-The same goes when looking at the Advanced Performance Tuning tab where you can tune the specific cores and their voltage among other things that I’m still not fully understanding. Just a bit more information that is easier to digest for less knowledgeable users, like myself, would be nice.
2) There is also a lacking of detailed information regarding the Graphics Switcher function/tab. There are two options, “Integrated Graphics Only” and “Advanced Optimus”. The language used on the online user manual is different than that which is used by the system, referring to the “Integrated Graphics Only” as “Hybrid”, while the “Advanced Optimus” is “Discrete”.
-The “Integrated Graphics Only” setting essentially turns off the discrete graphics card, which is the faster and more power consuming option, while only using the integrated graphics which is slower and part of the processor. This option is better on battery and heat production.
-Then we get to “Advanced Optimus”, which can be a bit confusing at first. With “Advanced Optimus” selected there will be an option below it with the text “Open Nvidia Advanced Optimus”, which upon opening will show the laptop display mode in the bottom right corner. This has 3 options. “Automatic Select”, “Nvidia GPU only”, and “Optimus”. “Automatic Select” is supposed to automatically change between the “Nvidia GPU only” and the “Optimus” settings. Usually, the “Nvidia GPU only” setting is selected by the automatic selection when opening a game title, as the “Nvidia GPU only” option is the faster, better performing for gaming option. Then when closing a game, the automatic selection will usually change to the “Optimus” setting as it is less intensive on the system. However, there are times where this change will not automatically happen when opening or closing a game title, which I had to figure out during my first week of messing around with the laptop, meaning you might have to manually set the system to one of the two options if it does not do it automatically before starting a game up. So a bit more clarifying information regarding this feature and how it should function.
3) The HP AC adapter (the wall plugin cord that attaches to the transformer, or the thick block thing, in the middle of the charging cord) has already been damaged after two months of use. The wiring at the base of the connector, which connects the wall plugin portion of the cord with the transformer portion of the cord, is already exposed. The plastic cord covering at the base of the wall plugin portion seems overly stiff, so it essentially bent until it cleanly and quietly snapped. It has no broken pieces but it is a very flat breaking point that does expose the wires, however, the charger itself still works. I have treated this charger the same way I treated the previous OMEN 15 charger for the last 7 years. So for this charger to be more damaged in two months than the charger I used for 7 years is a bit surprising. It’s not a huge deal, I will be contacting HP support about it soon to see if I can receive a replacement charger, or at least the specific piece that’s already damaged.
Overall, with that being said, the laptop itself is fantastic and I can’t recommend it enough. I will be waiting to see if it has any of the similar issues that the OMEN 15 did, like the rapid deterioration of storage HDDs or SSDs due to heat, which led to me replacing my storage drives 3 times over the 7 year span of the last laptop, until it had storage problems a 4th time where I then decided to just get this new one. Only issues so far were, again, only with the difficult to understand, or unavailable information HP provides about a few of the system functions, as well as the charger itself, the laptop is perfectly fine.

CPU runs way too hot.
Its a love hate right now. The laptop needs something done as it runs too hot when gaming. I am getting 200f/93c on the cpu, with a cooling pad. I am getting thermal throttling in games. Even professional reviews online say the same thing. Several have swapped the hp thermal paste for real liquid metal and it lowered temps 10+ c. I won't do that since it voids the warranty. I personal think HP should allow people to send it back and they replace the thermal material for real liquid metal for free.
My only complaint with the design is trackpad is cheap. I want a larger glass track pad for this price.

All Guts no Glory
I really enjoy the look of the machine. The white hides the fingerprints that the black unit was very easy to show and impossible to clean off and is understated enough. The lid really does need a notch or something to make it easier to open and it creaks every time I open or close it which is incredibly annoying and speaks to some poor assembly. I ultimately bought the unit because the price for a 5090 just couldn’t be passed up at the time but the thermals are SO bad it doesn’t really matter because it can’t utilize the card or processor to its potential anyway. I compared it to a RTX 5080 Legion 7i I also bought just before this and returned because I couldn’t justify the price but the Lenovo beat the pants off this Omen with a better 5090 card at the same power draw and fan speed settings so I am really disappointed even though I got a better deal on the Omen with a better GPU. All guts no Glory.

Great laptop let down by questionable QC
Pros - Beautiful OLED display, great thermals and incredible specs.
Cons - A bit on the heavier side and not so great battery life (To be expected from a high performance gaming laptop)
After waiting for almost a month for this laptop, I had the keyboard completely fail on me within a week of use. I've used laptops from several brands over the years and I never expected to face this kind of an issue on such a flagship gaming laptop. It's been a hassle waiting for replacement unit and I hope HP can work on preventing such issues in the first place.

Console replacement , absolute beast
This thing is an absolute beast. I have an Xbox Series X, I bought the Omen Max 16 to play Playstation/PC exclusives like God of War and Spiderman, also to play VR games like Half-Lyfe Alyx. Man this laptop blows my Series X out of the water. A have the version with the 5080 and Oled, I've been missing out for years. This thing is worth every penny, games look and play night and day better than when I play on my Series X. Here are the full specs of the laptop...
5080 GPU, 32 GB Ram, 512 SSD, I upgraded the 2nd SSD slot with a a Samsung Evo Plus 4 TB SSD, 240 hz Oled Display, wifi 7.
The only small nitpicks that I have are that it is on the heavier side, probably close to 10lbs when I carry it with charger, xbox controller, power supply and a few small gaming accessories in my bag. Second it gets a little loud with the fans and hot, but that has to be expected when you're running a 5080 in a laptop hahaha.
In the end if you're looking for a portable gaming experience thats far better than current gen consoles and more than likely better than next gen consoles, I myself am just skipping next gen and using this to game, just buy this laptop. You will not be disappointed, I bought mine on the July 4th sale and total it came to 1800$, add the 4tb ssd and it was 2k$.

My opinion on the Omen Max
I bought this laptop because of the specs for the price point during the 7/4 sale. It is well built compared to my Lenovo Legion 5. For the same price as my Legion 5, I got much more powerful machine. Overall, I’m happy with my purchase but I do have some minor complaints the biggest being the keyboard, the layout is awkward and the feedback response is lacking, I much prefer the layout and response of the Lenovo, it’s a much better typing experience. The OLED screen is good but the colors do not pop like my Samsung G9 or LG C3 OLED screens. I also wished that the screen can open up further.

Premium Laptop feel and performance to match!
I converted to the Macbook Pro for office use with the advent of Apple Silicon but I have always kept two laptops as I do almost all of my work from my Laptop and I cannot afford to be down waiting on a Laptop repair but so when I switched to Mac I kept my most current Windows Laptop which had an 11th gen Intel processor and a 3070 graphics card as my backup and used it to play games mostly as it was my back up. I waited for several years before I bought a new (windows) laptop (as I now have an m4 Pro Max as my primary) because honestly I was not in any way impressed with the Windows Laptop scene the last 3 years. That changed this year with the Omen 16 as I was a previous Omen owner a decade ago and I actually really liked those laptops and then they became absolute crap but started at CES the Omen 16 caught my eye and then I waited until some reviews came out and then I made my purchase. Look its heavier than my Mac, does not run as cool and doesnt feel quite as premium as Apple has nailed small light powerful and premium but OMG the Omen 16 is lightyears ahead of any Windows Laptop I have ever used. I despise a laptop that performs only if the fans are spinning so hard the laptop is hovering over my desk and this is the first and only Windows Laptop I have every used that on the lower performance settings absolutely nails good performance AND fan speed that doesnt sound like your sitting beside an airplane propeller. It is a solid peformer and if you don't care about fans look you can get your fill of fan noise by cranking the performance up but it performs so well (and I have the 5080 version) that you don't have to crank it up like that. I use mine again mostly for Windows games and I use it almost exclusively tethered to a 34" moniter in a desktop (lite) format with a keyboard and mouse and with the laptop closed and the exhaust setup allows for the laptop to work perfectly in that scenerio as screen does not have to be up for the fans to work effeciently which was one of things I was looking for design wise. Having said as much the Omen 16 screen is absolutely beautiful as I got the OLED screen as again this is my backup work laptop and if I am using it as a laptop then I wanted somethign good look at and it does not disappoint. In fact I have seen some reviewers call this the best Laptop Screen they have ever seen and I cannot disagree with that. HP thank you for getting serious once again about producing quality Windows Laptops in the Omen line and I am very happy with my purchase!

What stands out the most is the cooling capabilities. The laptop is on the heavier side, but it doesnt get hot and has self cleaning fan tech i would chose this laptop over the rest. All of the other gaming laptops ive tried got too hot and only lasted a couple years due to the extreme heat. I believe this laptop will last a long time and is a beast of a pc

HP OMEN Max 16 laptop
I purchased this laptop after purchasing games from GOG, STEAM and Epic games which my old laptop wouldn’t run. I downloaded the game programs and games onto my new laptop. All games opened and ran automatically, with the exception of FALLOUT 3. So initially I was disappointed. I knew this game won’t run under the installed Intel chipset. But my new laptop also has the Nvidia GEOFORCE RTX chipset. Why won’t it run? Did an online search, contacted HP assistance and found out I can use the graphics settings and Nvidia’s control panel to choose which graphics card this game opens with. Once set to open with Nvidia’s card, it opened and plays flawlessly. Haven’t tried using it for much else, but it is supposed to be powerful enough to handle heavy graphical operations, which is in my future plans. My only complaint is the color. I chose white, but thought it was going to be like a light silver-platinum, but no, it is as white as a sheet of paper. At least it’s easy to find! ?? To sum it up, I’m very pleased with my new laptop and am looking forward to using it with other projects.

Great laptop
Honestly lived up to the hype. It’s a big computer, looks amazing, only downside is the battery life… but it’s a gaming computer so what do you expect? By downside I mean 1 hr of gaming on the eco mode. Don’t expect this to run for hours unplugged. Other than that it is fantastic. I bought a fan stand to keep the temps low and that worked well, no other complaints.

Great Laptop - with one issue on the OLED Screen
I really like this laptop and I'm happy I bought it. I went all out this time with the RTX 5090, Ultra 9 275HX, 64GB RAM, Gen 5 1TB SSD (careful, the 2TB is gen 4), 240hz HDR OLED screen, Win 11 Pro, etc... I'm upgrading from an older Omen 17 with a 2080 (non max-q) from 2019, and this is a huge improvement.
What I like:
- USBC charging - I don't have to lug the adapter everywhere I go if I'm not planning on gaming. I can use my 65W phone charger even if I want to for low power usage
- OLED screen: This screen is beautiful, seriously. Cyberpunk 2077 looks incredible on this screen. But it does have a downside (see below). It can also get both brigher and dimmer than my older gaming laptop screen
- Not super heavy, but not light either. Ligher than my older laptop which is a plus
- I can just about max out most of my games which is awesome to do in a laptop.
- Full RBG keyboard is fun to be able to control all the keys. Last laptop had 4 zone RGB which was okay, but this has more control
- Advanced Optimus. Hardware mux between GPU and integrated CPU GPU for battery savings. Last laptop got 45 mins of battery life, even new. I can easily run this for 2-3 hours which is a massive gain from the last one.
- Easy to add another m.2 nvme drive - I added another 2TB SSD (gen 4) to the laptop because 1TB is not enough these days. From my reading, there is only one gen5 SSD slot and one gen4. The 5 requires you to remove the entire heatsink assembly while the 4 does not, so plan your options accordingly.
What I don't like:
- Biggest issue: OLED screen flicker - this one drives me insane. Especialy with the integrated graphics, the OLED flickers in darker light which is a huge PITA for something like writing code in VSCode or browsing at night. I've tried tweaking VRR, some of the power saving options, etc... but I cannot find the sweet spot for this screen. One the dedicated GPU, flicker is way less of an issue, if at all. I don't think I regret the OLED, but I did not realize how big of a frustration this would be.
- The fans are loud. Much louder than the older laptop when playing games. Though, you can overide this to be quieter - just turn down settings or you'll throttle thermally pretty fast
- No more "cool mode" profile on the OMEN gaming hub. I liked that setting when actually using this as a laptop on my lap, but now my only way to manage this is to create a custom fan curve, and it's a pain to do that, and requires you to be on "unleashed" mode rather than balanced/eco.
No regrets buying this. Biggest bummer for me is the OLED flicker. This is my first OLED screen, so I had no idea this was even a common issue with these types of screens. Beautiul, but that's annoying. So if you use dark-mode apps at night, you'll definitely notice that too. If that's going to bother you, either switch to the dedicated GPU with VRR turned off, or just get the non-OLED screen counterpart.

This thing is amazing!! The best laptop I've ever had. It puts my old gaming laptops to shame. It has excellent thermal cooling where the components and especially the keyboard stay cool, figuratively. I also like the HP omen software as it is intuitive and extremely customizable. The OLED panel screen is the best I've seen on a laptop.
Not a single complaint or issue so far!
