Rated 5 out of 5 by from It’s a great printer I was a bit skeptical to purchase this particular printer because of the reviews, but I took a chance because I needed a laserjet printer and I only wanted an HP. When trying to setup the printer, I did experience connectivity issues at first, but when I spoke with a representative, they fixed the issue and it’s been perfect ever since. It prints super fast and works off of Wi-Fi. It’s great to me and it’s doing what it’s supposed to do.

All I wanted was an inexpensive, black and white laser printer - it took hours to set up, only to learn that it requires an active internet connection. There’s no internet in the location that i needed it. Not only is the app glitchy and unusable, but the printer can’t be added manually unless you’ve set it up through an HP app. Absolutely infuriating experience.

Connected fine to my iphone (which I don't use to print from), but the software was not able to even find the printer. I followed the instructions to the tee. Disappointing.

Our organization bought 30 of these, thinking we could use them as local/desktop printers, and they would not function unless we attached them to the secure network of our building which presents a security violation. DO NOT PURCHASE IF YOUR INTENT IS TO USE IT OFF A NETWORK!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small Footprint, Stellar Performer I was prepared to NOT like this printer because I could not have imagined it would perform as well as others I have or have had in the past at this price. I thought it could not meet my needs. But it does! Would-be purchasers need to shop wisely and realize what this is, and is not. It IS a printer. It is NOT a copier, scanner or fax, though faxing through the app is possible so long as you have a phone number and virtual fax capability as I do. Is it the best? No, but it works for the occasional single or multi-page fax. This is a wireless black-and-white laser printer that includes six months of toner through subscription with HP. With a small footprint, up to 30 ppm 600 dpi output, dual-band Wi-Fi, built-in duplexer and up to 150-sheet input tray, the results are excellent. Subscription is required, and may be canceled at any time. If instructions are followed, all will be well, including downloading and using the HP Smart App. I followed the guide and easily joined the wireless network, added the printer to Mac and Windows 10 computers, to iPhones and Android phones. I was surprised, and pleased. If you are not one who follows packed-in instructions, things will not go as well. Why not follow the guide that HP provides? To test the printer and the free toner program, I printed virtually nonstop a manual that is about 200 pages. Over and over again. I did this in duplex mode and watched. This thing is fast and never missed a beat. I wanted to see how much it would print until the toner cartridge was at 20%, the threshold for automatically sending a fresh toner cartridge from the HP Plus program. At a shade over 700 pages, the trigger was tripped and I was notified that a new toner cartridge was on the way. I do not miss the lack of display because all settings are accessible through the app and through the web interface on Windows and PC computers. Scanning documents with a phone through the app is impressive as is the ability to print that output, and so much more. Please do pay attention to the many capabilities available from within the app. If you are not interested in mandatory use of the app and not willing to enter credit card information, DO NOT BUY. It is just that simple. Print from anywhere remotely is also enabled, so wherever in the world you are where there is Internet access, you can send documents to be printed by this printer. With its small footprint, excellent software and foolproof operation, I am impressed. If your needs rely on an ADF, scan and copy capabilities, look farther up the HP LaserJet line for printers in this same series that have these features for not a lot more money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awful Printer, Trial Expired In a shocking display of poor ethics, this printer will work fine over USB for about 2 weeks, then it will stop working. After an hour on the phone with Tech Support it turns out this is by design. The unit will work during a "trial period" then will shut off until you register your account and connect the printer to the internet. And keep it connected to the internet. This is malware, this is unethical, I own this equipment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice printer, except for one big thing This is the first HP printer I've purchased for personal use. Overall, it's a very nice printer. I've had a couple of tech issues that I couldn't figure out, but support was very helpful. My big regret in buying this model is that it MUST be connected to the internet in order to properly function. Based on reviews and comments from others, I'm not the only one who didn't realize that until much later. Although I mainly use it at home, I had planned to occasionally use this printer in a situation (away from my home office) where I would NOT have access to wi-fi, and therefore no simple way to connect the printer to the internet. It's unfortunate that the specs/product description didn't clearly state that the printer won't work if it's not connected to the internet. HP could have at least made this "feature" optional.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Won't Setup w/Out Special WIFI Router - Returned Very disappointed. There is a port on the back of the printer and the sales rep sold me a cable. Got it home and although I'm quite adept at installing new devices, this one would not recognize my WIFI password even though it is entered correctly. It won't allow connection using cable also, the initial setup MUST be using WIFI. Called tech support and they said to push buttons on my router, that wasn't possible. I tried using my iPhone to setup and that wouldn't connect due to 'Bluetooth Weak Signal' but it's a brand new iPhone and I'm standing 12 inches from the printer. Massive waste of time. HP had phone support and they were not very helpful. Nothing to do with this printer. I was told not to get an HP PLUS in the orange box, need one with a blue box and that will support cable connection to my laptop. HP - poor design.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from HP+ requirements are unbelievable… Avoid Buyer beware of HP+ and models that end with “e”. Internet connection is required. You cannot opt out of the HP+ service and you have to associate an HP account with the printer before it will work. HP has made it very easy to confuse non-HP+ printers like the m209dw and the m209dwe… they look exactly the same. I don’t know who came up with this branding idea, but it’s clearly entrapment. Ridiculous attempt at selling a subscription. Small businesses like ours that need a spare USB or LAN-only printer due to VPNs/firewalls will not even allow HP+ to connect anyway. Complete waste of time. Printer will be returned.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice, small footprint double sided laser printer I bought this onthe Labor Day sale to replace a failing laser jet 1200. Use with win-10 Pro desktop workstation, cell phones, iPads, network laptop. The printer is solid, much quieter and faster than its predecessor, prints dark black, and has had zero paper jams. setting it up was not easy and I called HP for help because the unit did not respond to the quick setup sheet instructions. We would up hooking a usb cable to the computer and printer starting it that way. The hp smart software seemed poorly responsive and even the tech seemed surprised, HP has really lost ground in ease of installation since the windows plug n play days. After installing 6 devices to use the printer over the course of 1.5 hours, everything continues to work as expected. My only wishes were for the installation simplicity of plug and play and a software control to adjust the print darkness for graphics intensive applications. Small dots and thin lines could use to be darkened a bit to be more useful. The cost of a cartridge of laser toner should be 30% lower, this is a well established technology.

Had the setup guide indicated that the Wi-Fi connection must be 2G instead of 5G we could have saved time and the long phonecall. Also the few buttons for power, information and such are small and not illuminated and respond slowly.

My issue comes from the fact that ive had to take it with me for work and setting up the printer is not a fast process by any means. Interestingly enough, I had an easier time connecting my phone to the printer to print documents than i did my own PC. Now that it is connected to my PC I pray I don't have to disconnect it until I move out.

I have actually printed less than the 700 pages with the toner that came with the unit by printing off game guides for a new game that I got for Christmas last month. But, I did manage to get my first shipment of toner via HP Instant Ink for it last week, and installed it just recently. While I wouldn’t recommend this to someone printing photos, it does do very well with text and regular documents. Coloring book pages within the HP Smart app print out looking just like they do from a coloring book. And per my grandmother’s take on those pages, they don’t run or anything when she uses markers in them. The duplexer on it is fast too. I told my dad that it is as fast as some of the photocopiers that he had at work in the past, and that he should get one too if he should have a need for one.

We were disconnected several times, until I finally gave up. I have tried wifi and ethernet. I am sending it back and getiing something that I can actually use.

It periodically goes offline, sometimes necessitating a call to IT to get it to communicate with the computer again. When it works it is works well, but more often than not it doesn't work when I need it the most. I will never buy another wireless printer again that doesn't also come with a USB cord!

It's not possible to even add this thing to the network during setup without providing email addresses. It's clearly made for consumers and it's a shame because we normally prefer HP laserjets. If this trend of consumerizing HP printers continues, we'll have to look elsewhere.

After set-up discovered the printer will only work with a totally wi-fi network. Since I have 4 HP desktops with two on ethernet and two on wi-fi this limited the usefulness of this printer.

It's constantly disconnecting from the wifi and there is no ability to connect it locally to my computer with a USB. This printer has made me decide to never buy a HP product again. A HP computer I bought in 2020 has been in for service twice to replace the same problem - the camera. I'm actually hoping for it to break again because I believe the next time I take it in for service under the extended warranty, it will be replaced. We just bought a new colour printer and it is a Brother. In the past we would have automatically bought a HP. Never again. I've had to call twice for service to get it connected and I'll probably have to waste another half a day today doing the same thing.

It is difficult to set up the wifi printing, keeps going offline, even printing when hooked up via a cable gives me issues. Never had such a challenging time with a printer. Even the IT guy at work couldn't get it hooked up to my computer.
