I’ve been a long-time customer and have purchased numerous Defender Series cases over the years. After 25+ years as a police officer—juggling multiple work and personal phones—I’ve always trusted OtterBox for top-tier protection. Until now, I’ve never had an issue. Their durability and performance have always been second to none. Unfortunately, the new Defender Series case for the iPhone 16 Pro has a significant design flaw. There’s no protective covering around the new camera control button, which leaves part of the screen surface and right side of the phone exposed. The very first time I dropped the phone, it landed directly on that vulnerable area. Fortunately, the screen protector absorbed the impact and saved the screen from damage. That said, OtterBox’s customer service remains unmatched. They’re U.S.-based, incredibly helpful, and genuinely understanding—a breath of fresh air in today’s world of automated systems and outsourced support. They worked with me to find a practical solution and a replacement case. Despite the design issue, I remain a loyal customer. OtterBox continues to stand out for their service and commitment to their customers. This is exactly the kind of company you want to do business with.

I really looked it over before clicking buy.And to my surprise it was in American funds that added $50 to the order. Next time. I just go into a store I guess.

So disappointed in the design for the iPhone 16 Pro with the camera button cut out. I am prone to drop my phone alot so I spend the extra money on a case to give my phone the extra protection it will need. However, that exposed camera button area will make my phone vulerable to break in that area. Most of Otterbox competitors have that area protected. Will have no choice but to return and start using a case from a competitor.

However, due to the 16pro side button, that area is SO vulnerable. I have a screen protector that cracked right at that point and again I haven’t dropped it at all. I’m not even sure if the screen itself is broke or not, but I feel design-wise they’d do well to protect that area

Compare the prices to Apple monthly it’s crazy. I’ve had these protectors for years. I’ve dropped my phone anyway. Possible on the floor in the dirt and war and I’ve had many of these every time I get a new phone I order a new one before it arrives.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from User issues and terrible customer service I am highly disappointed in my overall purchase with OtterBox hundreds of dollars and needing to exchange one phone case that wouldn’t fit the phone as it was the incorrect purchase but could never get an answer. When I called their customer service, every single time I was 30th to 40th in line and had an estimated wait time of 45 minutes to a hour. Tried reaching out online and nothing. To top it off, the defender is not really a well built case for users and in particular the issue is when you’re trying to drop down your notifications on your phone at the top it doesn’t allow that because the cover is too thick and it overlaps the ability to pull down your phone notifications easily. Not happy Otterbox and big fan of your small town vibes in FC but please try to be better on the customer service front.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Average but coverage is lacking Offer decent protection but very disappointed in the Camera Control coverage. many other cases have a way to at a minimum protect the area, but OtterBox chose to just create a massive section of their case to be removed. This in my opinion leaves a very large unprotected edge to the phone, which isn’t acceptable. Much less expensive cases offer the same protection and better design over the camera control button. A returning the case for this reeason.

The clip is flimsy and it seems that I constantly have to make sure the phone is clipped in otherwise it falls out of the holster when walking and when I get in and out of a car. On several occasions the phone has fallen out in the car without me knowing.

This is almost the perfect case, except for the size of the cut out for the camera button. While I understand the need for access so I can use the Camera button, it seems the cutout is larger than necessary, and that cutout space makes it difficult to put my phone in my squeeze grip car holder.

I prefer the holster to be on my right hip because I am right handed. I have always kept my phone there horizontally with the top facing forward, so when I take it from the holster I can bring it right up to my ear to talk. However, partly due to the design of my iPhone 16 Pro, it does not feel secure in the holster in that orientation. I had to put it with the bottom of the phone facing the front, which forces me to have to flip it around as I remove it from the holster to use the phone. That is less of an OtterBox issue, and more of an iPhone issue.

I dropped the phone about a foot and it hit on the top unprotected phone button. It broke the protective glass I installed on the phone. Loved Otter box until now. I sent all 3 phone cases back and went with another top brand.

I have owned many others through the years and it has protected my phones after dropping them. Some people complain about the open button that is not covered by the rubber case. I don’t think it is a deal breaker, because it would have to land perfectly in line, with that gap in the case, on a small stone or other protrusion to maybe do any damage. Be aware, if you buy after market screen protectors, the camera lens protector, that is one square piece that covers all three lenses, may not fit through the opening in the case. I had to buy the three individual lens covers, which fit perfectly. I will always continue to use and recommend OtterBox. The case also works well with magnetic chargers.

My only issue with the case is that the phone doesn’t go into my otterbox holster with screen facing inside of case like my previous IPhone 13 did. With the screen facing outside, I am constantly checking to ensure my phone (sometimes it’s not) is off.

But still a good case. The new case I just got for my 16Pro is a heavier duty case with a grip texture. The DEFENDER PRO MAGSAFE IPHONE 16 PRO in DENVER DUSK and I love it! Although, it’s heavier duty, it’s still sleek and good looking and probably more protective than my first case from OtterBox.

I wanted to like it but the dealbreaker for me after I had it in my hand was the cutout for the camera button. Corners on either side of it were very clunky and no border to guard that inch or so of the screen left to much to chance for breakage in my mind. 2 layers of case yet an open area. Felt not 100% protected. Sent it back.

We each purchased Otterbox Defenders for them and they did not disappoint! I was a little concerned about the camera button opening after reading some reviews, but it doesn’t seem to be an issue for the overall integrity for the case. Every iOS device we’ve owned (from the iPhone 5, 7, SE, 11PM, to iPods, Apple Watches and numerous iPads) has been perfectly protected by Otterbox products and I feel confident that this case will live up to that standard.

Although they slowly faded on the rugged part over the years, they really completely dropped the ball on the iPhone 16 pro defender case as there is no “rugged” protection (or any protection, really) near the camera button, which leaves the screen/edge of the phone in this location completely exposed. He returned the case and purchased a pelican, which offers the same rugged protection that he used to love from otterbox defender.

First, it no longer has a tether point which would allow a lanyard to be attached. Secondly there is a gap on the edge protection on the right side where the new camera slider is located. A drop which lands at that point will surely cause damage.

Also, the holster isn't as rigid as the i phone 5 I used to own as the locking clip and the phone position in which the phone snaps into the holster has the front lcd screen facing outwards which when moving in tight quarters has a high percentage that tthe screne will get damaged even with a screen protector

I understand it may be ok for drop tests on a flat surface but Murphy says if I'm on rocks or drop something on it, that's where it will hit. Also don't care for the fact that it only latches in the holster in one direction. Still having to put it in twice most of the time because it's backwards the first time.

The only thing that’s weird, is that exposed port, on the right for the camera zoom, but that’s a phone issue so you can’t blame otter box. But other than that, I’d say I would definitely recommend it to protect your phone for sure.

I had this phone 4 days and dropped it from my hand to the floor. The screen protector was immediately cracked at the notch. There is simply zero protection at the notch cut out. I will be getting a different case as I keep phones 2-3 years and will not be replacing screen protectors on a constant basis.

I’ve had several defender cases throughout the years and the little cover piece for the charging port always seems to wear out first, often falling out and getting lost. With this new case, I don’t have that problem as I was able to transition to MagSafe charging. My only concern is the little notch where the new camera button is. I know I’m going to drop the phone and something will eventually break that button, but I know why it’s there, as the button is touch sensitive.

The protective bezels don’t feel as raised as they used to be and there isn’t even a protective button for the new camera button. The camera button is just exposed with ZERO protection. I understand that designs change over time… but this case just doesn’t have that classic Otterbox feel that I came to expect. Bummer.

The volume on and off button is not covered so it is easily touched I have Otter boxes since they first came out. I would trust no other cover for my phone

The clip was not included with the phone after I added it as a “free gift” and I had to talk to support through their AI bot to get the clip shipped. The actual case doesn’t have a spot for the holster to clip into, so my case has a dent in the rubber where it sits. If you don’t want the clip, the new button for the 16 is left completely exposed meaning one drop at the wrong angle will shatter the phone regardless of the $70 case.

However, the Defender is not compatible with standard camera lens covers for the iPhone 16 Pro. In order to use the Defender with the 16 Pro, one must use individual lens covers; not the standard cover that is placed on the whole section.

As with my previous phone covers I really like this one as well. I do have two little points I’d like to make though. First of all I wish they could have designed it to cover the new camera button. Secondly, I would like for the cases to go back to being a little thicker the way they were on the iPhone 11’s and older. Mainly thicker or taller on the front to protect the screens and/or front of the phone a little better. They are still very very good cases though and I fully endorse them.

Where it lacks is at the camera button, leaving about 1" entirely exposed. You wouldn't think this was such a bad thing, but on a previous phone mine slipped off the console, hit the seatbelt buckle and hit right on the edge cracking the screen. You know that millimeter between the glass cover and the edge of the phone, yep CRACK all the way across the screen. What are the odds that this would happen twice? Fingers crossed! With that exception it offers pretty good coverage but definitely needs improvement.

I have been using the Otter Box cell phone cases for a long time now and still think that they are one of the best cases on the market. They have provided excellent protection for my cell phones for many years. However, in my opinion the newest designs are not as protective as those in the past. I do not understand why they got rid of the front panel which protected the front of the screen from dirt and dust. Now my 16 PRO iPhone is open to the elements and the stick on screen protectors are no substitute for a closed in front panel. I hope that Otter Box will consider giving the option for customers to purchase a case with a front cover other than just the water proof case model that is not affordable for most customers.

Case and belt clip just don’t work and my $1,299.00 Phone just keeps falling and falling and only locks on one way. What a hassle!? I grab my phone and the camera button is where I always grab, I can no longer use my stand up charger. The case is too thick. No to the Defender model. My kids bought Serenity, but they cracked on the second day of use.

Went straight to my local Verizon store where I was surprised to find an in-stock otterbox for my five year old I-phone. The fit was perfect, quality was consistent with expectations, and I plan for my new otterbox to serve me for another five-plus years.

I keep my phones for a long time and when the case wears out, I never have trouble getting a replacement. If you keep your phone for the long haul and put it to the test, Otterbox is the way to go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Defender 16 Pro case needs update I have relied upon and have enjoyed Otterbox for many years. It was the only phone protector for me. When I ordered and received the 16Pro defender case with clip, like every year, I was surprised and saddened to find that in my opinion the case is lacking the attention to detail I have come to expect. The Defender case doesn't cover the edge of the phone where the new camera button is on the right lower side of the phone. Before I received the Otterbox case I had another case temporarily that did have it covered and I dropped the phone and my glass protector cover cracked right there. I said to myself that i'm glad I had the glass on or it could have been my phone display glass and the Otterbox Defender case would not allow this to happen. So now I wait and see if Otterbox does a little research and maybe they will have an updated version soon. I will always buy Otterbox over any brand.

Otter Box protects my phone and the belt holster keeps in close when I am wearing jeans or khakis and need to have quick access. The belt holster also doubles as a phone holder on flights.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It’s not the case, it’s the phone . . . After upgrading from an iPhone SE to the iPhone 16 Pro, I needed to get a new Otterbox Defender case and holster. Unfortunately, due to the design of the new iPhone, I have to make adjustments to the way that I secure the phone to the holster. With my previous case, it did not matter which direction that I placed the case in the holster. With the “indent” on the right side of the 16 Pro phone, there is only one way to securely attach the case to the holster. Nothing major but definitely a learning curve to make sure that the case doesn’t detach from the holster.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Needs two belt clip slots The case itself is good, but it only has a slot on one side to put it in the belt clip it comes with. Which means you have to make sure that slot is facing up, otherwise it falls out. I guess if you carry your case on the left side you probably won’t have this issue, but I carry my case on the right side. I understand there is a button the right side of the phone but i have lined it up and the is enough space to put a slot on the other side.

The side camera button has a larger cutout and it just doesn’t seem so secure. My last phone had an otterbox. I forgot it on the roof of my car and drove off. Another car actually ran over it. But no damage to my phone!

Already broke one screen protector and it’s not super comfortable to hold in your hand. It would be nice if they had a non cutout version.

When I bought a new 16 pro I bought the otter box case with the holster. Perfect protection the case protects the phone from dropping the holster covers the screen, then just in case I got the screen protector which is thicker and each are a perfect fit I am so impressed with Otter Box I didn’t get insurance. We will see about insurance. Definitely recommend.

Cracked the edge of the glass and thus cracked across the face with a week. After having previous otter boxes, never have i had this type of weakness and never have had an issue until this one. Now inhave to get a new glass face for my phone. As a fire fighter. There should not be any exposure to a glass edge. Also phone only clips into belt clip upside down, one way only vs prior models

I have been a loyal otterbox customer since iPhone 3 and it seems they just gave up on the design of this case. The holster does not securely hold the phone either.

Very expensive for the most basic case. I remember paying half the price now just a few years ago. All in all a great case tho. I may have to shop around next iPhone tho, we’ll see. No one does warranty replacements like OtterBox, which is always necessary.
