When installing the SSD into the original chassis secured on 1 side, the alignment of the edge connector is marginally off to the mother board. This result when inserted it did not allow me to secure the chassis to the base and remains floating. Shims should be included in the kit to allow for this adjustment. 2. Although I followed the instructions carefully, at the end they talk about installing an additional app that would further increase the speed of the SSD. At the end of the tutorial It left me hanging without knowledge how to proceed. I not sure how much benefit I am seeing with the new SSD? I assume its installed correctly from a software standpoint.

It was very easy to clone and install, but you have to take it carefully, step by step. Overall, it didn't take more than 90 minutes (including the cloning). My computer works great now --much, much faster and smoother.

I tried to use install kit in a maingear custom computer, had problems getting it to fit with the adapter bracket and spacer as well as without it, the mounting screws did not fit into the ssd with the spacer attached. I got one maybe two screws to fit and it would not align with connectors in the slide out drive bay.

I also ordered and received the 24.99 install kit, that was supposed to contain a 2.5 to 3.5 adapter in addition to four other items, The adapter was not there. I called support and was told I needed to also purchase the bracket (Supposed to be in the box but wasn't.) at an additional cost of $22. This kit is a ripoff!! Don't buy it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Appropriate SATA to USB cable to clone HDD to SSD. The flashing LED light on the SATA connector was the only indication that the data were being transferred. There was nothing on the computer screen to show that the transfer was taking place. When the LED stopped flashing, I 'guessed' that the transfer was complete. Without the LED, I wouldn't have known what was going on. BTW, although the product is called "Desktop Install Kit," it also works for a laptop, which is what i used to for.

The data transfer cable doesn't work as the 2 computers I tried it on can recognize that there's something plugged in the USB port (USB A 2 and USB A 3 and USB C) but that's it I can't transfer or even format the external drive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from crucial SSD and seperate purchase of an install kit i am a first time SSD user. decided to upgrade my existing system which i built rather than design and build a newer system. an SSD and a video card was the upgrade. i do regret not going intel kaby lake processor when i had the chance a few years ago. this is my band aide to upgrade existing system. So. SSD is maybe 7 times faster than the more traditional spindle moving SATA drive. the SSD is a whole different animal with several advantages and perhaps a few disadvantages. SSD advantage is great speed and less maintence time to keep system optimal. the crucial kit contains a usb connector for cloning your existing os to the new SSD. the SSD being a 2.5 inch for laptops needs a 3.5 inch converter piece for a pc such as mine is. So my experience with my new SSD and the installation kit is overall positive a good investment so far. learning how to SSD rather than traditional SATA is an educational experience. follow crucial tips for maintaining longevity of your SSD. key word and phrases TRIM donnot defrag learn_how_to_SSD.

A step-by-step would include simple things like putting the new drive in the computer instead of attaching it to the USB dongle. It would also state how to use the Acronis software for cloning, as the software has many other and related uses.

Each installtion kit had a physical disk to boot from to perform cloning which I do on a semi-weekly basis for backup. This last purchase came with a link to download the software which, apparently cannot be burned to a bootable CD - at least not that I've found.

It has the required cable to clone the HD to the SSD plus an additional cable to add power to an extra HD which I did buy and install. I use the SSD for booting and programs. The additional 1TB HD is for data. The kit also includes an adapting bracket to facilitate installation into the desktop HD slot. Good price.

It would have been nicer, however, if a CD of the cloning software had been included (like you guys used to do) instead of requiring your customers to go online to create an account to activate the software. The drive caddy design used by Dell for standard-sized spinning drives requires an adapter that's the full length of a standard drive to be properly supported in the caddy. I wouldn't fault the adapter itself but there should be additional guidance for Dell PCs as they *all* use these caddy designs for standard-sized spinning drives.

Stand alone boot of the CD would not recognize my Razer Naga mouse. But using this product CD from within Vista worked perfectly, without any errors, and much faster than expected to clone a HDD to a SSD. No usage paperwork at all came with the product, and I found the weblink for help in the CD was confusing & useless. So I just used the CD in Vista and it worked fine!

No need to worry about MBR, GUID, etc. When it completes just pull your old drive and plug in your new one. Sizing is automatically done and no further setup is required.

I see one other review on here that is pretty harsh, and focuses on some non-standard users (like focusing on the adapter tray for use in a Mac tower). I don't know about all that; I think the most common use would be replacing your mechanical laptop drive with a SSD laptop drive. For this purpose, the kit works flawlessly and quickly. I used it on a work laptop on a corporate domain and didn't have to do a thing after the copy/image process. Highly recommended if you're just wanting to get a SSD in your laptop without re-installing anything, which I think is the main targeted use for the product.

Not so easy to install, but Crucial's kit, including Acronis True Image, and the conversion cable, made it much easier. Unlike swapping RAM, this can take several hours, depending on how much stuff is on the original drive. Also, don't forget to adjust the BIOS after installing. It would get boot errors the first several times until the BIOS was adjusted. Lighroom catalogs and photos appear more quickly without all the disk whirring, so that's an improvement. Also, bootup is noticeably faster, but not iPad-like as some people claim.

Simply select the options, reboot and wait for the coning to complete. The switch out the old drive for the new and never look back!

I've never done a replacement before so I was looking for assistance. This kit is a must for novices who want to clone a drive. What it lacks is useful instructions. I went back to the Crucial site and watched a couple of videos about installation and they used this kit. So, I ordered it. Things went quickly and fairly effortlessly. In the end the new drive booted first time. But then I would get random crashes. No warning, no feedback on what was wrong. Control Panel would not load. A cold restart and things would work for a while. I eventually started removing programs that were running in the background. One of them was the cloning software. I don't know if that was the one, but since I was done with the transfer, I deleted it, among others. No more crashes. Was it the culprit? I have no idea, but I wonder why it was still running. Did I miss some step in the installation? I don't know but that is where some troubleshooting docs would be helpful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Maybe save your money I had to use a drive enclosure and cabling that I had lying around, the included cabling would in no way work inside my Nvidia coolmaster computer case. I have been building my own boxes from parts since 1999, and this was not a workable situation. The software might be good, I have not tried it because I really don't see a need to mess with it so close to upgrading my OS. I used thespace to back up what needed backing up, and making an image of the old OS is useless.

The problem for me was the accompanying Acronis True Image program. Its backup service was locking my computer. It took me 3-4 days before I could resolve the problem (I uninstalled it).

You do everything it says, and you will not get any e-mail to unlock it.. meaning you have to either buy some other software or download another product. Notice there is more than one comment on this issue.. The hard drive comes with the same product.. you can't use that one on either. Bay holes don't line up to secure all 4 screws either. Total waste of money.. I ended up buying another product.. I might as well thrown my money in the trash.

How to use this device was confusing to me and the video/instructions were not 100% helpful. However, the customer service rep I spoke with was very knowledgeable on the topic and quickly gave me the info necessary for a successful experience. Further, as I understand it, I can continue to use this device with my old HD using my old HD as an external cloned backup for not only my files, but also my OS.

First run program, it doesn't find hardware, must terminate then run again. Simple problem to avoid. On apparent completion of copy, found unrecoverable errors in source. Instructions at that point not clear at all as to whether the copy is usable. Final result exceeded my expectations. Program smart enough to adjust file/partion size to match new hardware. Excellent!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Included software destroyed mt drive and data I am quite livid with the Acronis True Image software that is included. The software provides no instructions whatsoever. I followed the on screen commands to try to clone my drive. They neglect to mention I am supposed to create a bootable media and run off that, and not on the source hard drive. You'd think it is a good thing to warn people that this MIGHT destroy your drive. I didn't find all the KB on how to use it after my drive is messed up. Well now it completely destroyed the MBR and boot sector and I have failed at every attempt to recovery my data so far.

Sure its just a mounting kit, but the M4 SSD purchased in store works great too.

Ended up just installing the new drive and cloning it. The clone was not a god one, just got the operating system and no Doc's, Pictures, etc......

Loaded real slow & after waiting for 5 minutes & loading Win XP Pro all the way I stopped it. I think the program works fine, but not the drive although it says it's compatible!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unstable cloned system didn't work. Didn't work in my Laptop. I was forced to forget it, since using the clone with Acronis made the system unstable, full of crashes and freezes. I was forced to install the whole system new. Crucial SSD works now very well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from as others have said the software DOES NOT WORK The bracket does not line up properly, the software is useless can not get a key to open it, and if you are upgrading a desktop computer you can just buy a SATA cable and plug it in to the motherboard and transfer it that way instead of using this USB device. I ended up getting the software from somewhere else.. it took 15 minutes at that point. The same software comes with the SSD, it does not work either.. NO SUPPORT WHAT SO EVER

I bought this adapter set based on the SSD install video saying I needed this to mount the drive in my Desktop minitower. The set works well, except for the drive mounting bracket. The video refers to a sort of "housing cage" the drive goes into, while the set I received just comes with a plate the drive screws to. The plate sort of dangles slightly in my desktop's housing, but seems to be rigid enough to work. That difference in the mounting plate got a 1-star deduction, everything else works as described.

It took about 8 hours for the cloning to complete and after I swapped out the drives and turned on my computer it could not find the operating system. I tried cloning it again and the same thing happened. I ended up having to do a clean install.

One of the more large format drives available at a reasonable cost with comparable stats with other more expensive drives. Finally, a near Terabyte SSD drive that most can afford. My programs open super quick and my boot times are equally quick. I highly recommend this drive!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SSD's are excellent! When I added one to my laptop last Fall, I was amazed at how much faster it became. I had thought I was limited my memory, but NO, it was disk speed. I had another reason to justify the SSD. I give it pretty rough use by carrying it under the seat of my truck on long trips on dirt roads in the Southwest. I have always worried about a mecahnical disk in those conditions although I never had a problem. I just added one to a desktop recently. The there was less speedup as would be expected. In the last few months, they seem to be able to preserve dual booting with Linux as well -- although I ruined it (knowingly) by changing the partitions quite a bit,

I haven't had much of a use for them yet, but im sure that i will in the future and am glad to have them. Product worked as advertised and im satisfied with my purchase.

I started the process, and when it told me to reboot my computer, I did that and then it did nothing. no screen to tell me how long it would take, after 12 hours I shut it down and loaded winsows from the media. I would not buy this product again, its is a waste of time and money

It was somewhat simple to install and the price was reasonable. It shipped quickly and the personal attention I received over the phone and online was very good.

I only was upgrading to a 80GB SSD so not sure how long a larger hard drive would take but mine only took about 1 hour. Need to try and use the other utility to upgrade my MacBook Pro. Will let you know once I try that.

Disappointing software to clone hard drive so after many hours had to start a new reload starting from WIN XP to WIN 7 TO WIN10. Then all the drivers then all the programs and APPS. Have never been able to do a successful transfer of backed up drives so this is nothing new.

In addition, the cloning software does not work at all. No migration of the operating system to the new drive simply didn't happen. And you don't get any help whatsoever or step-by-step guide of some sort to help you through the process.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes it easy to upgrade to SSD I got an error message on my HP Pavillion Elite desktop saying hard drive failure was imminent, so I went online and bought a Crucial MX100 512GB SSD. The SSD is listed as compatible with my HPE-250f desktop, but the drive is a 2.5" drive to fit in a laptop. The adapter bracket included in this kit enabled me to fit the 2.5" SSD into the 3.5" drive bays in my desktop. Not all the holes lined up, but using two of the four included screws securely anchored the drive in my expansion bay. The kit includes the 2.5" - 3.5" adapter bracket to mount a laptop drive in a desktop, a SATA power cable, four mounting screws, a SATA-to-USB adapter cable, and a download code for Acronis® True Image HD data migration software. (The SSD already came with a code for the Acronis software, so I have an additional license to give to a friend or use on another computer.) There is much debate on the Web about whether it is ok to clone your HDD to an SSD or if you need to reload all the software from scratch. I figured I would try cloning first before resorting to spending a day and a half doing a clean install of Windows and all the available updates. Cloning was fast and easy and so far I have not experienced any problems! Here's what I did: I downloaded and installed True Image HD, plugged the SATA-USB adapter in the back of the new solid state drive and plugged it in to my computer, then ran the software. The interface was very straight forward and easy to use. I selected the cloning option and used the automatic settings. The software prepares your computer, reboots, then completes the process. The entire process took about a half hour but could take longer if you have a lot of data to transfer. Next I placed the computer on a suitable work surface, disconnected the power, and opened the cabinet. I secured the new SSD in the adapter bracket using two of the included screws and mounted the bracket in an expansion bay (I could have just as easily removed the old drive and put the new drive and bracket in its place.) Since I was replacing the old drive rather than adding an additional drive I unplugged the SATA cable and power cable from the old HDD and plugged them into the new SSD. Otherwise I would have used another available SATA cable already in my computer and plugged the power cable that came with the kit into an available slot on my motherboard or power supply. I didn't need the included power cable, and I only used the SATA-USB adapter cable for the cloning process. The adapter cable can also be used to turn any internal SATA drive into an external USB drive.

I followed the install instructions for the drive and found out later that I had to First create the Image onto the SSD before installing it using the USB cable adapter. I was assuming the image would be transferred from the hard drive using the same cable after the SSD was installed. Please provide better install instructions for people who arent computer hardware experts.

I liked the Crucial cable better then the Samsung cable, but how many times are you going to use it? If your wondering what my comments are about the software MMI go run the Samsung Magician.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything I needed to install the new SSD This kit comes with a SATA-USB adapter for cloning an existing drive, a mounting plate for mounting the drive on rails, mounting screws, and a power cable. The mounting screws actually worked better than the ones I had in my system already because they were a shorter length, and therefore fit better. Installation was easy, and everything was sturdy and worked perfectly.
