In the meantime I'd bought another couple from another maker, which have let me down badly. Can't believe the difference! Make sure to have the srt (Torx security) drivers with hollow ends before starting.

That Crucial item should be mentioned all the times the web site brags about how easy the cloning process is. Yes it's mentioned in the install guide but I didn't review the install guide before buying.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Be sure to give your NEW SSD a Letter Drive Name I had a huge problem getting this SSD drive to work in my Lenovo Edge 15. I cloned the drive twice to get the thing to work. After the second time, I gave up, and the following day, I went onto Crucial's website for support. They only offered chat, so I gave it a try. They were not much help, making me run around in circles trying to figure out what the issue was. After many hours of struggle, I finally figured out why the new SSD would not load my Windows operating system. Lenovo's OneKey Recovery software was booting up because the SSD did not have a drive name associated with it. It was a simple fix, associate a letter drive name to the new SSD drive and everything worked out great. So much faster than what I had. I am happy with the product, but not so much with their options for support.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy install and very fast The instructions may need to be updated. It looks like my MacBook Pro does not support the recovery of a disc connected via USB. I had to use a 3dr party disc copy, Carbon Copy, worked great the first time. After that install and function was great! My machine after the new SSD and 16G of memory is faster than when it was new. For under $200 you have brought new life to an old MacBook Pro.

Needed to buy the SATA to USB adapter to do the data transfer, which worked extremely well. Machine now runs super fast, boots in a 1/4 of the time (less than 10 secs) (Windows 10)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Planning to upgrade with more units First of all, the price is the best you can find for this fairly new technology; fast shipping, plenty of support, but you have to search out some things you might need. Is not crystal clear in the literature, but the cloning software is downloaded from another site. The software, once you find it, is comprehensive and almost foolproof, but again, for a fairly major hardware replacement like this, take your time to work with it. "Slow is smooth, smooth is fast." Firmware update is great. Bottom line? Older computers will have new life for many more years. If you like what you have and want to keep a familiar footprint, this is about as good as you could hope for.

I swapped out my regular 500GB hard drive on my i5 laptop with a Crucial MX500 SSD, and I have never before experienced any computer upgrade making as big a difference in a computer. I have upgraded desktop computers by adding an SSD as a boot drive, but with my laptop, the Crucial SS is the only drive, and now everything POPS! Boot, programs loading, everything. Wow, what a difference.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wish I could give a flat out review After installation with another SSD, bought previously, my laptop functioned like lighting in a bottle, 13 hours later my laptop couldn't find any hard drives, couldn't detect any boot device, after 10 hours of troubleshooting the only time it saw any thing was in legacy mode, and if you know ssd's they won't run in legacy. So it ended up with me having to wipe drives and reinstall everything. Not sure why that this happened or how. But over all my experience with the product, was a little difficult to install, seemed a hair thicker than it should of been, but installed and read with no issues, though I can say crucial software would not read my hp Notebook-15-bs0xx aka HP Notebook Jaguar.

Everyday usage has also improved greatly. Installation was easy and only one of my programs didn't work after the cloning process. Very, very happy with the results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great in a 2010 iMac Installation had it's "challenging" moments - iMac's are not the easiest machines to get into (getting the display out and back in is a pain - you just have to take your time). And figuring out how to best place the drive and the 3.5" adapter took two trys (hint: everything goes in upside-down). Lastly - just short the pins on the temperature sensor (that's what Apple does if you get an SSD). In the end, everything worked out - the drive works wonderfully. The bottom line - the machine is faster. OH - and don't forget to enable TRIM support in OSX (google for instructions - it's not difficult).

On the 18th I had my Tech upgrade my System Drive to your SSD 500 Gb and added 32 Gb of Kingston Ram [ removed from my other computer that I am no longer using ]. He also replaced my graphics card with a Gigabyte Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti! I couldn't be happier with the way my runs now! Thanks!

The SSD works great and more importantly the only problem with the clone is that licensing information for an accounting program did not transfer which required re-installation of the program. No big deal , and the laptop works great.

Stopped setup, installed SSD drive copied original drive to it rebooted, from then on everything was fast. Will buy more Crucial MX500 to replace slow drives in newer computers.

This came with cloning software so you can easily copy your old drive and have new life. Took about 30 minutes to totally install and copy. A night and day difference doesn't do this justice, it was much better than that. I wished I had done this sooner!

Crucial software for cloning drive worked effortlessly. Can't believe how well my 11 yr old dell responded to this little upgrade! After a hiccup contacted Crucial for a RM and within 2 weeks had a new drive at my door. Gotta love a company that stands behind their products with a 5 year warranty.

The cloning process seems to work fine then when I install the drive my computer just can't seem to find it. Anyways I call tech support to see if this is something we can figure out and about 3 minutes into the phone call this guy hangs up on me. I call back and the same thing happens. It was a lame experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fine adventure! Got 2 of these SSDs. Setting up the first one was quite the adventure! We run mainly Kubuntu but retain the Windows that came with the boxes, which was lucky since the cloning tool runs only on Windows. Some lessons learned over many attempts: * Be sure Windows is completely up-to-date before beginning, otherwise it will be updating in the background and interfering with the cloning and partition-editing processes. Best way to do this is to "update and shut down" multiple times until it stops saying "...% complete. Do not turn off your computer." * Beware: Unless the SSD is exactly the same size as the original disk, don't use the"Automatic" setting to clone the disk. Use "Manual" and specify "As is" so the partition sizes are preserved. Use other tools to adjust partition sizes and placement as needed after installing the SSD. * The process will likely break the boot loader if dual-booting. It's simplest to blow away the Kubuntu partitions, re-partition, then install a fresh Kubuntu and restore user content from backups. It took starting over perhaps half a dozen times to learn these and other lessons, but in the end we migrated two machines to SSD and have everything working just fine. The guidance from Crucial was very helpful, though I had to do a bunch of web-searching to resolve boot-loader issues and find a partition editor compatible with Windows. Fortunately, I like tech troubleshooting, so the many days I spent getting it all working were fun for me. Those who are running only one operating system will likely find the process much simpler, especially if the OS is Windows.

I see a big difference in boot time and opening programs. I backed up files from both machines prior to install and reinstalled files once the new drives were installed. I had no idea how slow my old drives were until I updraded to solid state drives.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very cost effective upgrade The Crucial MX500 SSD module is compatible with standard 2.5 inch drives. An adapter is required for 3.5 inch replacements. The ease of installation depends on the device being upgraded, laptops needing more attention as opening the case can be more time consuming and risk breaking some plastic clips. Installing an SSD is by far the best way to extend the life of a laptop or desktop, unless upgrading to Windows 11 as computers older than 4 years are unlikely to be compatible with this OS and most newer computers will have an SSD.

I turn to Crucial based on the web site's computer look-up process and scan options to ensure that I get the correct product for the machine. The free disk cloning software is also a bonus. Apart from getting inside a laptop or PC (can range in difficulty), the upgrade process is straightforward. Minor quibble: I feel that the USB/SATA cable should be mentioned as an option for cloning on all SSD pages. Other than that, all my Crucial purchases have performed well and I'll continue to purchase from them.

Lightroom loads in less than 10 sec, boot time is less than 20s from totalling, browsing is instant. A totally new experience on my 10 year old ASUS equipped with I5 from that era and 'only' 8 MB RAM. Seriously, my photos load from catalog to develop module in less than 5s, sometimes it is instant. Couldn't ask for more.
