Cisco Building Broadband Service Manager (BBSM) is an access gateway for public access networks that enables simple, plug-and-play access, end user self-provisioning of services, multiple authentication and billing options, web-based management, reporting, and configuration.
Cisco BBSM works with Cisco access-layer LAN and WLAN products to provide a complete solution that enables businesses, venues and service providers to create, market and operate broadband access services in markets such as public hotspots, enterprise, healthcare, retail and hospitality. The Enterprise can securely offer their guest's access to the Internet over existing networks. Public hotspots and other venues with high visitor turn over can offer Internet services to customers or visitors for a fee or as a free amenity.
Key Features and Benefits:
Cisco BBSM enables user access regardless of their network interface configurations. Computer users can connect to the network using devices configured for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) or static IP addresses, as well as static proxy settings or DNS entries. This plug-and-play capability enables access for the widest variety of users and laptop configurations without requiring costly IT support.
Security Hardening:
Cisco BBSM has been designed to utilize only the necessary services and ports to allow guest access. Cisco BBSM appliances ship with hardening enabled, which involves disabling unnecessary services, removing and modifying vulnerable registry key entries, and applying appropriate restrictive permissions to files, services, and end points.
Assists venues in providing a secure and high quality Internet access environment.
Protects from malicious attacks that could affect the quality of service.
Increases uptime and end user satisfaction.
Reduces total cost of ownership
Enhanced System Fault Monitoring:
Cisco BBSM has been enhanced to register system faults, errors, and warnings to the Windows operating system event log. Each Cisco BBSM event is assigned to a specific ID that can easily be monitored and analyzed.
-Offers system administrators more granular insight to system events that can be used to proactively address issues affecting service.
SNMP Trap Alerts:
Cisco BBSM will offer the option of sending pertinent system alerts via Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to allow for real-time system monitoring.
-Provides priority alerts to system administrators on Cisco BBSM's current condition.
-Allows for effective monitoring and management of Cisco BBSM deployments.
Dual VLAN Support:
Cisco BBSM can query network devices and end users on separate VLANs.
-Prevents possible security issues, such as network device compromise, related to having users residing in the management VLAN.
-Allows for more secure multi-functional use of network devices in sensitive environments
Support for Duplicate IP Addresses:
Duplicate IP address support allows end users who have the same IP address to be challenged for credentials in order to gain access to the Internet.
-Increased ease of use by challenging all duplicate IP users, instead of assuming malicious activity and denying service.
-Reduced support calls and lowered total cost of ownership
Gigabit NIC Support:
-Allows for more optimal and efficient transmission speeds on the Cisco BBSM appliances
