Autofocus function
I use this with an R5 primarily for birds, including birds in flight. The autofocus function is very spotty. I can take ten photos of a hawk, two will be tack sharp and 8 will be fuzzy. Same with swallows.

One of my 2 favorite RF lenses so far
I was on the wire on buying one of these. But after reading reviews from the likes of Dustin Abbott and Whistling Wings I finally bought the RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L IS USM lens. I put it through its paces steady the first week I had it. It not only lives up to the good I have read and watched but it has earned my praise. This lens is fast to focus on my R5, nails focus regularly, renders some of the most beautiful images I have and is light enough to hand hold for full morning sessions of birds in flight. It is also great for butterflies, flowers and compressed landscape photos. When Canon finally releases the RF 35mm f/1.2 L MY HOLY TRINITY will be the 35 f1.2, 85 1.2 and the 100-500.

Excelent optics, poor build quality
Thought on paper f/7.1 at 500mm doesn't sound great, the optics are fantastic and paired with the R5, I get awesome pictures. However, it's just nowhere near as durable as past L-Series lenses. the EF 70-200, for example, is a total tank and in perfect condition after many years of abuse. This RF lens got dust inside the front and back element almost immediately. The lens mount also broke off and got stuck inside my R5 after just a small drop. I am positive any of my L-series EF lenses would have been fine. To repair the R5 and lens, Canon charged me like fifteen hundred bucks and of course I was without my camera and lens for a long time. The gear came back still in poor condition. The repair is warrantied, but now I have to send both the camera and lens back to Canon again. It's really not acceptable.

Absolutely outstanding lens. Expected nothing less
I bought the 28-300L years ago. I loved it. It was an incredible lens. Then I moved to the 100-400, followed by the Mark II. The 100-400 II L was the best long zoom lens I've ever put on my camera. (Please read the full sentence, ZOOM, not fixed(prime))
Then technology changed, as did the prices of course, and the new toys came out. I've had a 5DIII since it launched. In fact I had two. Once I made the switch to dual R6's I figured it was only fair to upgrade the glass, despite the fairly hefty price mark up.
The 100-500 is by no means inexpensive. Nothing Canon makes in the L range is inexpensive. However, if you're using top quality glass and the highest end full frame products, most who use them are professionals who make their money using the gear so the expensive part fades away quicker than for most.
The photos are tack sharp. The extra 100mm is great, and the lens is lightweight. However, don't expect this lens to be small like the new RF 70-200. It's massive. It's as big as the 100-400 but feels a lot lighter. So far I've shot dance retcitals on it, and when the lighting is right, it allows for incredible closeups. I did buy this strictly to take to Alaska, so I will be shooting wildlife with it.
If you have the money, purchase it. Think 100-400II plus less weight and even more quality improvement. I love all the features. I'm excited to toss on the new extender to see how that comes out.

Awesome lens!
This is a great lens! I am using it on an R6 and it works flawlessly. The focus is very fast and accurate, and the zoom range is ideal. As with any RF L lens, the image quality is fantastic. The size and weight are good for handheld use. I have used it for taking pictures of dog agility training, and the dog running around outside. I also used it for whale watching and got some fantastic shots that don’t need to be cropped.

A disappoinment
I've owned the EF 100-400 since it was introduced, and it was one of my favorite lenses. I anticipated being just as happy with this one, but I am not. This lens focuses more slowly and is slower and not as sharp, particularly on the 500mm end. After giving away my old 100-400 and buying this lens, I was so disappointed that I bought a new 100-400. I use it with the EF and RF bodies with an adapter, and it frankly works much better on both kinds of body than the 100-500mm. It's also much more solidly built.

I have had this lens for a couple of months and I’m still on a learning curve, but so far it lives up to the hype. I’m a rank amateur photographer who loves farm shots, wildlife and birds, but I feel like this lens has really helped me to get some nice shots. Would highly recommend.

on receiving my Rf 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM lens, I was very happy with the weight of the R6 camera with the lens. I have a lower disc problem carrying my !DX and 500mm prime lens. I do a lot of hands shooting, I don't use to much my tripod. with R6 and lens combination helps with my back problem. the lens is light for hand shooting and take wonderful and sharp captures.

This is a fantastic lens. Crisp, fast, able to be used handheld. It's comparable to the EF 100-400, which I previously owned, but the extra reach is an asset and it feels like the stabilization is even more secure.

Great lens. Super sharp. Excellent zoom range. I'm using on the original R so I'm sure the experience would be better on the R5 or R6 in combo with the built in stabilization. I have only had limited opportunity to use it but so far so good. If Canon only had an upgrade program for bodies (hint, hint.

Very nice glass. Focus was sharp and crisp at all ranges so far. I was shooting with Canon R and the only complaint I have is focusing seemed a little slow or sluggish. Waiting on new R5 and hopefully it will be better. I am used to 5D Mark IV and L series lenses. So we will see. New to mirrorless and this is only complaint.

Good Telephoto but not a prime
I purchased this as a secondary lens for wildlife photography, smaller form factor, hand held shots, more focal ranges in comparison to my Canon 600 f/4 II prime lens. However, in comparison to my 600mm f/4 this lens doesn't really compare in the quality of the details. I guess you really can't expect it to compete since they are in different leagues. Birds in flight are way slower to focus in action which leads to missed shots and is not as good in low light situations. I'm seeing noticeable grain in comparison to my 600mm f/4. In post I'm having to edit my photo's more to get them right. I did use this with an RF 1.4x extender and I was able to achieve a decent result at a distance. However I would have had more reach with better details using my 600 f/4 +1.4x III or even 2x III. I don't feel it provides the same WOW factor that I get with the Prime. For larger Mammals like deer the RF 100-500 will probably be my preferred option in most cases. This is an excellent grab and go lens. I was surprised by the bokeh backgrounds that you can achieve with this lens it had grain but it was good. For enthusiasts who cant afford a prime or who don't want the weight of the large prime lenses this is an excellent choice. If I hadn't been spoiled by the 600 f/4 I would have given this lens 5 stars.

Incomparable piece of glass
Let me start by saying that build quality, design & performance are absolutely stunning.
Love the little window on the hood for easy access to maneuver a polarizer filter. A fabulous idea indeed!
It is by far one of the sharpest super telephoto lenses I've ever seen in my 40+ years in photography, no question about it.
Image quality of this lens being completely sincere not a bit far from perfect.
Love its compact size, its 77mm diameter filter; Fits perfectly in my 13" backpack when I'm just panning out around the City, superbly amazing in low lights conditions, focal range unequivocally marvelous, close ups are gorgeous at minimum distance.
Exceptional ultrasonic motors.
Would've preferred not so narrow aperture f/4.5 - 7.1 but it is what it is and overall, it is a superb piece of glass which I recommend 100%.

Great -- for 2 months.
I am a bird photographer and really looked forward to using this lens. It seemed to check all the boxes. In the field it worked great -- (though at times getting the autofocus to pick up on birds in flight with a solid cloud cover sky was a challenge, but this is probably my user error in part. Overall, I was really happy with it -- UNTIL the lens filled with moisture. I live in the Pacific Northwest so being able to shoot in light rain is a must -- I had the lens covered the entire time with a lens/camera body cover AND the lens is supposed to be weather sealed -- yet moisture got in and the lens failed. Now I am without a lens for however long it takes for Canon to check out the issue -- and regretting my decision to lay out a giant pile of cash for a lens I only was able to use for two months. Really disappointing.

RF 100-500mm f4.5-7.1 L IS USM Good for Photographing Birds
I recently received my Canon RF100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM zoom lens. I've had a chance to use it twice at a National Wildlife Refuge within an hour from my residence. The lens takes very sharp pictures and works well with a 1.4x or 2x extender. With the R5 body it works in autofocus which is a great benefit. The lens is very light at 3 lbs. and a 2x extender adds about 12oz. I would not mind if this type of lens went to 600mm and weighed another pound. The present f stop ranges from f/4.5 to 7.1. This seems to work well with the R5 camera body, but an f/5.6 or f/6.3 design would mean a lower ISO. Overall this lens takes photos at the same quality as the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS, and has the benefit of autofocus with the 2x extender, and the extra 100mm which is good for photographing small birds at a further distance.

RF100-500 The Good and the Less than Good
On it's own I really like this lens, lighter than the 100-400mm but with an extra 100mm of reach. Image quality is definitely on par with the 100-400 and the RF 70-200. RF100-500 by itself on the R5 is an excellent lens. The loss of 1 star is for two reasons. The max f-stop of 7.1 is rough. Compensating by upping the ISO helps but if this could have come in at 5.6 it would have been perfect. The other reason is the issue with the RF teleconverters. I can live with the minimum focal distance being at the 300mm mark for shooting purposes but you still have to zoom out to that point just to attach the teleconverter and thats not very practical in usage, especially if out in the field where this lens is most likely to be used.

Canon RF 100-500mm lens review
I was really hoping to love this lens, but in the end I ended up returning it. First, what I like, and that would be image quality. This is a sharp lens. Unfortunately the one thing I didn’t like, and what caused me to return the lens, was the zoom from 100-500mm. I shoot a lot of fast action stuff like birds in flight, and throw on this lens, at one and a half turns, is just too much for me personally. I would much rather have had a bigger lens with a shorter zoom a la the Sony 200-600mm. For now I’ll just stick to my 400mm f/2.8 and use the money from this lens to eventually buy the RF 600mm f/4

Superb lens for the serious amateur
It is amazing how much Canon has managed to pack into this lens that is quite small for what it does. With the image stabilization, you can expect to get almost pro-grade shots at 500mm while hand-holding. You would need to spend almost 4-5 times the cost of this lens to get the next level up in image quality.

Well worth the upgrade from the EF version
I have the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens that I used with my 80D and 5D Mark IV. I have also used it with the Canon R5. I found that the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM produces much sharper images than my 100 - 400mm. And I found that the extra sharpness was well worth the price. I will be selling my 100- 400mm and moving away from the EF series of lens.

I'm using it on an EOS R5 and almost always have to zoom out to 100mm, get general subject focus, then push into 500mm. Which, if you're trying to capture birds in flight, is a complete bummer especially since it's not a cheap lens. I was hoping for the performance of my EF 70-200, a completely awesome lens, but it just doesn't compare.

One of the sharpest lenses I own. Great at the race track and air shows and everything else in between and out between.

Nice lens, relatively light
I use this lens way more than I did my EF 70-200 f2.8 IS USM with 1.4x and 2x multipliers on my last Canon cropped sensor DSLR. I use it with an R5. Still learning how to use it well.

The best mid-to-long telezoom
Bought this when the R6 first appeared to replace an EF100-400m1. Quality at least as good as you would expect from an L telezoom at this price point. It really stars when paired with the R7, the resolution at full aperture more than matches the 80Mp (FF equivalent) pixel density of the R7.

Fantastic Zoom
This lens is simply fantastic. Super sharp, quick to focus, exceptional minimum focusing distance. I use it on my R6mkii and love it.

Versatile Supertelephoto Lens!
I've been working with this lens for almost a year, and it's just great! Super sharp throughout the range and has great bokeh especially at longer focal lengths. Would definitely recommend if you've got the money.

Sharp, excellent zoom range
Great lens. Super sharp. Excellent zoom range. I'm using on the original R so I'm sure the experience would be better on the R5 or R6 in combo with the built in stabilization. I have only had limited opportunity to use it but so far so good. If Canon only had an upgrade program for bodies (hint, hint).

Much better than I thought it would be
Mostly a portrait photographer, long lenses have until now not been in my camera bag. But after starting on a wildlife project, I decided to the 100-500 a whirl. I'm blown away by the images.

Optically great ergonmically bad
I've been using the lens now for over a year and I'm really trying to like the lens but just can't. The lens is fairly light and easy to pack retracted. Optically it's extremely sharp. Focuses very fast. The slow F7.1 aperture is dismal and gets trounced by the competition. Should be an F5.6 or 6.3 at least. The twist zoom ring is horrific. The zoom through makes it' impossible to zoom on fast moving subjects without losing your subject. Internal zoom lenses are so much better in this regard it's no contest at all. Wake up Canon look at the Sony 200-600 or the new Nikon 180-600. Pricing is also outrageous for what you get. The lack of Canon competing in this segment really has me considering switching systems after 31 years of using Canon products.

Exceptionally good at 500mm, especially for a zoom
This is an exceptionally sharp lens throughout the zoom range, but especially at 500mm. On an R6 and R6 Mark II, it produces amazing results. If you provide enough room between your subject and the background, there’s plenty of separation and pleasingly smooth bokeh, even at f/7.1. Bump the ISO and use DxO PureRAW if the light is a little low. You’ll still get beautiful results. This lens is worth the price.

Wow
I'm blown away by how sharp this lens is at 500mm and they stay sharp when using the 1.4x & 2.0x extenders! Also, this lens works perfectly with the R5, it's almost like they were custom made for each other!

Great lens, not a fan of variable aperture, but for the price, small disadvantage, especially with new cameras and being able to use higher iso's.

Worth every penny
I have a few months on this lens and it does everything I need it to do. Even shooting outside the range images crop pretty well and with some Denoise are excellent quality so I’ve never felt the need for a teleconverter. So far I’ve carried it on 10 mile hikes with 2000+ feet elevation gain. I notice it but it’s manageable.
