Great camera, but...
I purchased this refurbished R50 about a month ago with the kit lens. Upon arrival, it came just as it should with everything that was included on the description. However, shortly after taking some pictures, I quickly noticed a very thin line stretching from the bottom of the picture to the top. After using different SD cards and doing a deep reset, I came to a conclusion... The sensor was broken. Yes, they sent me a camera that was defective. I was not happy about this at all after spending the money on it that I did. Fast forward a couple days later, I talked to Canon support on the phone and they told me there was no way I could exchange it because there were no more in stock. So, what they recommended is that I have it repaired. Shipped it off and they repaired it free of charge because of the warranty included.
Needless to say, be careful when buying refurbished products. Always check to make sure everything is working properly before waiting until it is too late (luckily I found out quickly)

Love the camera and the kit lens!!!
I've had this for about 3 months now and absolutely love it. This is exactly what I wanted; it's small, light weight, easy to use, has all the functions I could ask for, and it takes amazing photos! The camera and the lens are much better than what I expected for the price, I can not imagine what else a person could want at this price point. I love the flip-around screen that can be tucked away for safe keeping. The thing that has sold me more than anything on this little mirrorless is the viewfinder. The viewfinder is phenomenal, it literally looks better than real life. A few years ago I had a camera with a digital viewfinder and I did not like it at all. The technology for the viewfinders has now caught up to where it should be and it's awesome! One very minor negative about the whole package is that it is so small and compact, the buttons can be a bit hard to use. If you're wearing gloves it might be hopeless...

Great camera and lens kit
I upgraded from a DSLR (Canon 90D) and prefer the mirrorless Canon R50. It's more sensitive, MUCH lighter, "smarter" (can do more automatically), fits in my pocket with this lens retracted, and is just a nice companion.
With the 90D, it's so heavy that I'd have to consciously think "Do I really want to lug a camera around today?" But the R50 just comes with me no matter what.

CUSTOMER101 - Have you recieved your camera yet?
Dear Canon,
Beautiful camera. However...
More importantly. Far more importantly. Apperently, it appears, a concerned customer of yours did not recieve their purchased camera at all.
CUSTOMER101 - Second review down. Has NOT recieved their R50.
Canon USA. Please consider the implications, please consider your customer base and the value of these reviews. Please do not disregard this matter. Please update your community on the resolution of this matter.
I sincerely hope a replacement or refund has been issued for this customer. I, personally, find it impossible to leave an unbiased review, knowing someone out there cannot leave a review at all - when they are clearly entitled to do be able to do so, at thier own discretion.
Thank You Kindly.
A concerned Canon camera user.

Great Beginner Camera
As my first camera, I am happy with it after 3 months of use. I think it is a great teaching camera. I am learning a lot and feel like I can take the photos I want to take. It doesn’t pressure me to buy new lens or a new body. I get at a pretty good price the ability to take photos that surprise me. I recently was gifted a 16mm lens and that made me more addicted. I like the control rings too. The only consistent issue I have is when I am walking around with it in my hand sometimes I will trigger the shutter settings to take multiple photos at once or to the 3s timer option. I think something that makes this camera fun for me is the point and shoot ease with jpg. Eventually I did switch to raw and learned more about aperture and iso. The auto focus was really nice and I have played around with a few of the other modes. Video capture is good. I can’t say too much about it but I do like the quality. The audio it captures is meh but I assume I will need actual mics and proper sound equipment because it tried to capture everything. Overall great for my level of experience and I look forward to taking it with me as I travel

Good camera to dip your toe in the mirrorless world
Buying a refurbished R50 seemed like the best value to stick my toe into the world of mirrorless cameras. Lower priced than a new one, but still backed with a Canon warranty. Although I didn't really want the standard kit lens, it was cheaper to buy it that way than buy the body only. The R50 is a lot smaller than it appears in online photos. I was expecting a full size DSLR camera, and it's smaller than a Rebel. Good if you like to travel light and have small hands. With the Canon adapter, it works great with my old lenses, which makes the transition to mirrorless less painful. The R50 has allowed me to play with mirrorless in a cost effective way. Opinions seem in favor of mirrorless, but personally, I'll stick with conventional DSLR for as long as I can. I just don't care for electronic viewfinders.

I have taken this camera all over... But...
The Canon EOS R50 is the bargain of the camera world for most people it's perfect for the "I wanna get into photography" or just taking better pictures then a phone or a parent that wants nice photos of the kiddo. For me the things I love about it are its lightness the tilt flip screen the on switch location the dial location and feel and build it feels good in the hand. I love the colors of my photos also canons color tech and sensor tech is really wonderful. I rarely ever have to edit my photos color-wise. The things I hate about it are that it for some insane reason it is not dust and weather-proof and as a landscape photographer in the pacific northwest that is a large flipping issue. I honestly when I got the camera didn't even bother checking to see if it was I assumed that all mirrorless cameras where now weather sealed and dust sealed to some extent cuz like all my mirrorless cameras I had owned or rented up to that point had that just built in. Huge L Canon. I have complained to cannon service about that and even told them they need to release a rain jacket or some kinda waterproof box for it. They politely declined to do that. Honestly This camera could have been my main camera for the next 5-10 years but without weather sealing I feel like imma want an upgrade after the summer is over and the rain really starts coming back in full force. Buy it for the Sensor and tech inside but just don't get it wet or dirty. The other major issue is that Cannons RF lenses have a little IR light inside them to confirm focus so my hope that one day I could convert this camera to IR and use the lenses I have is not possible and it feels like a huge bummer. If you are aware of this issue you might say well it doesn't have that big of effect at fast shutter speeds and I would say yeah but I wanna have a camera thats not limited to only shooting fast speeds.
RF-S 18-45MM kit lens that came with my R50 is decent. It's got that image stabilization and thats the main reason I still use it cuz otherwise honestly it's a bit sad. It just feels like its missing something everything feels meh out of it there's no excitement or anything just a bit dull really. oh also for the 18mm side I use it for that also cuz im not putting more money in this camera system getting the RF 16mm if I can't one day use it for IR. It's also great for night shooting. Great for holding you over till you save up enough for a better lens. Also canon why in the world are you using plastic for your mount. PLZ STOP is the little metal bit that expensive to make? This lens is also not waterproof as it's not an L lens and doesn't get the fancy red ring. Once again as a landscape photographer in the pacific northwest that is a large issue Cannon takes the L on that. Maybe thats why canon has the L lenses cuz if your tired of taking L's you pay the big bucks...

A Good Travel Camera
It has a pop-up flash, fully articulating back and is small size. It is a good camera for casual shooting and a travel companion. Canon's does not offer any prime RFS lenses. The zooms are limited also. I like 1.4 to 1.8 lens for interior shooting and a macro for flowers/stamps/coins.

Compact but Capable and Budget-Friendly
I was looking for a lightweight yet capable camera for video and stills. The R50 has proven pretty handy for both purposes and is definitely a lot more lightweight than the other setups I have.
The stills in particular have been impressive, with most pictures coming out sharp and detailed. It struggles with noise at higher ISO levels (3200+), but it has done the job when needed. I do find the viewfinder a little lackluster, but it's fine generally, just not as nice as some I have used.
As for video, with a little more practice I'll be plenty happy with the results. My main problem with video capture has been the autofocus in some way or another. It's great generally, but it's acted up a few times and I missed my shot because of it.

Very nice for the price
I've got an M6 which I love and use for hiking -- it clips on my backpack and is both small and light. Of course the "M" series is discontinued -- my daughter wanted something similar. We're both Canon shooters with plenty of other cameras for the last 20 years. This was what I got her to fill the bill; its very close in size with the kit lens to the M6, and she loves it for this purpose. Of course its not waterproof so you have to take some care with it, but for this application small and light without compromising much else is the key, and that it has the same quality of sensor is the biggie.
Now if there were just more of them at the price I paid for this one (I'd upgrade my M6 to one of these too.... :-))

I really appreciate the value of the Canon refurbished kit. Everything arrived quickly and so far it appears just "like new" and appears to be operating normally. I intend to mainly photograph landscapes/outdoors as I travel.

Great "beginner" camera for a good price.
I love my r50 so far, I'm a photography beginner who mostly just took pictures on their phone but wanted something more dedicated and higher quality. For my first "real" camera I think it meets my needs perfectly and I'm very impressed by it. I still need to learn how to get better at shooting manual but everything about it so far has been great, easy to learn, and easy to use. Despite being refurbished my camera arrived looking and working like it was brand new with zero signs of use at all which was lovely to see considering buying refurbished was a much better deal than going with new. No complaints from me right now :)

Camera Overheats as an HDMI Webcam
Bought this on 12/31/23 to use as a webcam through HDMI. Canon said this is possible and won't have overheating issues. I was out of town and unable to test it until after the 14 day return window and within 1.5 hours, the camera overheated while using it as a webcam through HDMI. Canon won't make a return exception, so I'm left having to hope that a firmware update will resolve the issue or apparently I'm out of luck.

Great beginner/budget option but possibly a little too compact
This is a very compact camera and lens combo and very ideal if you need something lightweight and discreet to shoot with. I bought this for my wife as a beginner and upgrade from a T6 and it was easy for her to use on our trip to Europe.
The kit lens is very basic in the look and feel and we ended up using the RF 24-105 that I already had which made a huge difference, so keep your expectations in line with the kit lens as it is pretty limited. Purchasing a more capable lens either RF or RF-S is pretty much a necessity.
The camera is very compact and performed well. My wife was easily able to fit it in her purse even with the RF 24-105 lens and using RF-S lenses will make the entire package even more compact. I read other reviews about the camera being too small and have to agree if you have average to larger size hands. This camera would not work for me size wise if I had to use it for an extended period of time.
The battery did die quite quickly the first time it was heavily used which I attributed to the battery needing to have a few charge cycles before performing optimally. Other than that, this is an excellent choice for a beginner or someone on a tight budget but still wants a mirrorless camera, while also considering the compact size potentially being an issue.

After reading up on entry level models the r50 stood out for a number of reasons. It’s allot of camera for the money and did not disappoint. The packaging/presentation is that of a new unit so it served well as my sons 18th birthday present-
He’s been enjoying it and says the shots are “crispy” ??
Shipping was completed quickly and without hiccup. It was refreshing to be reminded what a quality brand is like to do business with, well done Canon.

Easy to focus and get the right exposure.
My first mirrorless camera. I wanted one so I could have some exposure preview in the viewfinder. A couple of things that I have not seen highlighted much in reviews... I'm really pleased with the programable control ring on the lens, which enables me to notice a need to tweak the exposure and do it without taking my eye away from the viewer. I am also really happy to have discovered the ability to pick focus points on the touch screen even when it is off and I am using the viewfinder. I bought the EF to RF converter and my lenses seem to work very well. Getting a good photo requires proper exposure and focus and this camera makes it easy to do both fairly intuitively so I can concentrate on the other creative aspects. The small, light size will make the camera easy to tote. The kit lens is nice in its range.

Great camera with room for firmware improvements
The R50 is an amazing little camera. It packs great image quality and video recording features into a small body. For my skill level, it has features and options beyond what I currently need. The flip-out screen is a very useful feature and worth the extra cost over cheaper models. Unfortunately, there are some firmware glitches that need to be addressed. Controlling the camera via WiFi fails on some Android devices (notable Pixel devices, but also Asus phones). This could be the phone's fault, but that is of course no help to you as the user (phone manufacturers won't address an issue you have with a 3rd party device).
