Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not for Pro's I really wanted to like this camera but...this camera is not fast, 8fps at best and if you have any interest at all for shooting RAW images, it flat out, with current firm ware doesn't do it and only a single card slot, hello.... Outside of this, has a sensor cover that closes when off and lenses are removed to keep dust out, love the drop in ND filter on the lens adapter possibility, feels great in hand, I mean great and the clarity on the LCD is very acute. Canon needs to revisit their intention with regards to coming to market with a mirrorless body if this was their initial introduction especially with Sony and others setting such a high bar, I believe they could have done much better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Nice Camera I have had this camera for several weeks and I love it! This is my fifth Canon digital camera and it is the best one of them all. My previous camera is an 80D which I love too, and will still use in certain situations, like when I want extra reach with a telephoto lens. The EOS R was a great choice for my first full frame camera. I am impressed with its sharpness, dynamic range and high ISO capabilities. Anyone familiar with Canon menus will find it a fairly easy adjustment to use this camera. I love that I can use my EF lenses. My 24-105 and 16-35 f/4 "L" lenses work great with the adaptor. I also like that it has a totally silent shutter capability, absolutely no sound at all. The EVF is bright and sharp and I love that you can see in real time what the exposure will look like. I look forward to using this camera for many years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DISAPPOINTED I used this camera for the first time for not even 5 minutes and it froze and locked up on me 4 times! The screen started going haywire and turning blue and purple colors! Even with a full battery the camera would turn on or do ANYTHING! So after 5 minutes of taking photos I had to call canon and send it back in to be replaced! Still waiting for my new one....also I had to cancel 3 photo shoots over this past weekend on my clients. I’m beyond disappointed and let down

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Camera I’ve had the R for about 7 months. It replaced my 6D mk ll. The focusing since firmware 1.4 is spot on. The electronic viewfinder is crystal clear, focus selection is super easy and low light focusing is excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best. Camera. Ever This wonderful camera arrived in just a few days. Love the $500 discount. Knowing that this is an Official Canon camera and not a knock-off or overseas model is great. Photos are freaking awesome, even using my older EF and EF-S lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Mirrorless Full Frame Ever This the best camera I've ever owned. Picture quality is great. Ease of use. I need to tell those who complaint about the Touch Bar being inadequate. I'd tell those people: 'Just disable that feature, the camera would be great the same way is that feature is disable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camera, but.. This is a great camera, but it looks like Canon just listened to YouTube noise makers and not to the silent world by discontinuing DSLR cameras. The reasons and EVF is dark first and lights up, not necessarily to the correct brightness. The LCD screen goes blank at times. In the single point focus mode, the focus point is not small enough, therefore it often gets confused. In the eye focus mode, it misses eyes a number of times. The spot metering circle is too large, probably like partial area metering boxes rather than spot metering. Not sure by transforming to a mirrorless world, we have to compromise so many things. I am not particularly crazy about burst rate, since I don't shoot sports, but, so much automation is generally for photography challenged people, rather than experienced photographers. No offense meant to anyone. Other issues are if you leave the camera on, the sensor is constantly exposed and perhaps bad for life of sensor and it could destroy a few pixels. I am sure Canon's sensors are of high quality, and this is probably one of the advanced sensors, but the sensors if accidently exposed to constant bright light, could destroy. These is a warning about this in the manual. Therefore, I prefer DSLRs. I could list a number of things, but I was hoping for 5D Mark V and it certainly does not seem to be coming. Therefore my suggestion to Canon is to take a survey from its existing customers on what kind of products they would like, rather than listen to YouTubers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Camera I bought it back at the beginning of July 2021 and so far I am very impressed with it. I came from a Canon Elan7e film camera so I have no experience with digital cameras so that is why I am highly impressed. Number one reason I purchased the EOS R was that I can use the EF lens that I already had and it works flawlessly. Second reason, it is made in Japan and I highly regard Japanese workmanship. Third, the 30 megapixels. The rest, very many features at a very reasonable price. The camera is extremely well built, and the pictures that it takes are worth every penny…actually every dollar! I recommend you take it for a test drive, you’ll like it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bad i bought this a month ago and i couldn't be Unhappier with the camera. i have always supported canon cameras... my entire equipment is full of canon products and it saddens me to say how disappointed i am with canon and its claims for this particular camera. Being a professional photographer i shoot on sets and was excited about canon and its silent shutter speed. however this camera is NOT silent. even when i use the silent mode it STILL makes sound. on top of that shutter sound it another MAJOR disappointment was Image stabiliser motor sound which is always running and there is this odd buzzing constant sound... i had to turn the stabiliser on my lens off to keep the camera silent. its so sad cuz i used Sony only for a day.. and it was exactly what they claimed. a SILENT SHUTTER and you get a complete silent shutter!!! i no longer want to be a canon supporter. it should be direct with its customers!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Go To Body! Purchased my R when first introduced last October. Purchased the adapter control ring as well to take full advantage of my EF glass. Camera body ergonomics are excellent. Grip fits very nicely and comfortably into my hand. I use this body exclusively for my real estate work since it performs so well in low light conditions common to my assignments. I found the custom assignment of the buttons and dials to be intuitive and reliable. This is a well designed, feature-rich body that delivers as promised. The lack of IBIS is not an issue for me since my EF lenses all work seamlessly with the adapter ring. Will be purchasing the next gen version when it comes out later this year to replace my MK IV.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best for aging eyes I sold my 5D mark iv to buy the EOS R. Now I have the best of both worlds especially the ability to see more when composing and the hi res folding screen for candid shots. And all my L glass works perfectly on this body with a substantial weight reduction. My take is that DSLR cameras will go out of favor and mirrorless will take over the new camera market.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Give it to you straight Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic... different choices, different uses, different people. Specs aren't everything. What the Canon Eos R does, works for me, and I'm happy. A solid piece of equipment the moment I held it. Camera ergonomics aren't to my liking but I'll work with it. Overall, I like the Eos R and what Canon has done.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing camera, amazing new R system I love almost everything about this camera. Even most the things people are complaining about. The image quality is second to none. The sensor level focusing is a total game changer. No more calibrating lenses, and it nails focus every time, even with something like the 50 1.8 wide open. Just incredible. I have no problem with the touch bar, and I use it. The new RF lenses are ultra sharp all the way through the zoom, even wide open. I make my living as a photographer, and I'm fine with one card slot. If you absolutely have to have dual cards, obviously not the camera for you. I also don't shoot much video. So, if you also must have different video specs, also not the camera for you. Onward... It's super light and is more comfortable to hold than any dslr I have owned or tried. I have big hands, not a problem. Build quality is everything you would expect from a top end Canon camera. The only thing I don't like about this camera is that the rear screen turns on every time I take the camera away from my face. I want it to act like a dslr... off except for image review and menu. I have not found a way to do this. If I turn it off, it's really off. Everything is through the viewfinder. Annoying, but no big deal. I'm tired of typing now, so I will sum it all up with "Awesome!" So glad I bought it. I was a little on the fence about it after reading and watching all the reviews. I've found that a lot of the negative review aspects are easily corrected with custom settings, are blown way out of proportion are simply not even true. This camera is a dream come true for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best all around Full Frame camera at this price. Honestly the ergonomics are great. AF is best in class for stills and great for video for sure. with 4k limitation for af and crop mode. Usual Canon menus and added features for this body. RF mount is new and i love the 24-105 kit lens, tact sharp through out the range! Of course I love the full articulating screen. AF assist is a nice touch. Adapters bring a whole new world to the RF mount. If you shoot in "M" full manual like my self know Canon thought of you. Shutter speed on front main dial, Aperture on rear control dial and ISO on M/fn button right next to front main dial. From factory, nice touch Canon. Others would learn from your advantages! Not the best video rig or sports photography rig, but best for the masses 80% I believe. I've use Fujifilm, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic and more. But love this concept and I'm part of this Revolution for sure. This body begs for primes! Especially since it has peaking and focus aids just for manual focus. Loving it. There's always haters, no need to argue just put your money where your mouth is, I did twice first with the 5D3 and now with the EOS R. Dials are solid pro grade buttons a bit mussy. Inputs are all there Mic, Remote, Headphone, Usb-C and HDMI. Not impressed about slide bar but maybe later, Off for stills not to change settings and on Tripod could be helpful as another choice and adjustment. Front ring on RF lenses is a rare and unusual treat. Only one card slot. Use new card, format card before use. Don't pull battery or turn off power when card is reading or righting and you should be good to go!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast Autofocus in Low Light! Let me start out with a full disclosure. My first test was taking it out to photograph Christmas lights. It flat out beats the Canon 5D Mark IV in low light performance. Seriously. The thing will focus on the least amount of light and do it quickly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent value, performance and images I bought the EOS R to add alongside my Canon 5DS. The body is comfortable, and the controls are better than some people realize or speculate. It just takes a few days to adapt. The EOS R turns EF lenses into "new beasts" whereas they function better than I've ever seen on my 5D mk iii or 5DS. I got the new RF 50mm 1.2 also and its one of the best lenses I've ever used. I plan to order a future similar body later with two card slots, but I found that the Wifi transfer of JPGs suffices for a backup option (but I've never had a bad SD card in 10 years. The EOS frame rate is not speedy, which is noted in the specs, but I do not cover sports or fast wildlife. So this camera is almost perfect for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mostly great - a few surprises both plus and minus As a multiple Canon lover coming off a 6D, the EOS R was my final upgrade choice over a 6D MKII or 5D MKIV. More features over 6D but lower cost and newer technology over the 5D. The ability to migrate lenses was huge for me. From a user standpoint the camera layout and controls are very different from EOS SLRs so expect an adjustment period. Pros: Awesome AF possibilities, shutter speed and customization potential. Also with the view finder: exposure, DOF and multiple exposure potentials were a positive surprise and a plus. So was the MF guide. The 2 reasons I cannot say 5 stars: I have never had to go beyond in-camera Chromatic Aberration with my lenses before but have had to with this camera, even with Canon lens profiles. Worse, the noise starting at 800 ISO is more than my old 6D. I can fix it in post but at this price point, I should not have to. Would I recommend it: If you edit in LR or PS to fix CA or noise and you want to venture into mirrorless: YES If you are not into post processing or looking to experiment: No

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great, some observations Did not buy the camera yet, but checked it out at a store. Overall the specs look good, but, I had to go to the store thrice to be able to check some basic things. Had to reset the camera, but it looks like it did not reset everything since the multifunction bar and the extra ring on the lens still were set to ISO and aperture respectively. My observations: 1. I tried multiple exposure a few times and finished. It showed me the resultant image. I turned off the multiple exposure setting. During some of the next single exposure shots, it showed me a pre image of some of the previous multiple image pictures and it took the single picture over the previous multiple exposure image picture. The camera did not have a card in it. Looks like this is a firmware defect. 2. This camera should have had the aperture ring for aperture change in manual mode like the previous cameras. Removing the aperture ring is not a good idea. Often the focus ring and the function ring on the lens could be confused with each other and does not help with quick pictures. Basically, all three buttons or rings, for ISO, shutter speed and aperture changes must be on the camera. Glad the shutter speed ring is available on this one. 3. Also need the distance scale on the lens like the DSLR L lenses. Hope Canon keeps these in mind for subsequent camera releases.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EOS (R)ad As a photographer and theme park vlogger, I wanted a camera that could handle both photo and video seamlessly and instantaneously. The lighter, the better. For a while, I had been using a Canon 6D for photography and a Canon SL2 for vlogging. However, carrying the two cameras and constantly switching between them was a hassle, so I decided to sell the two cameras and preorder the Canon EOS R, as it seemed that it was the perfect camera to do both. When I recieved the camera on release day, I couldn't be happier! PROS It feels amazing. It's lightweight. It uses both EF/EF-S lenses. Superb image quality. Beautiful low light photo AND video. Snappy AF. Touch & drag AF works amazing. C-LOG! Long battery life. Looks slick. Seamless & quick switch from photo mode to video mode. There are too many pros to list. CONS? (They don't bother me but they apparently bother others! Cropped 4K - 1080p is crisp and is just fine for my work. I don't have the time to sit around and wait for 4K video to import/export anyways. One SD card slot - Too many people worry about this WAY too much. It's 2018, you can automatically back up photos to your device via the camera's Wi-Fi. I've tried it and it works perfect if you're absolutely worried about losing files. No in-body stabalization - just hold the camera steady, if you can't, digital IS is fine. All of my lenses happen to have IS so once again, this doesn't affect me. Overall, it's an amazing camera. Anyone completely bashing probably doesn't have anything better to do and hasn't even seen one in person. Get one and use it to death. Any camera you buy nowadays will be great. The EOS R works for me and maybe it'll work for you too. If you know what you're doing, you'll have lots of fun with it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Everyday Camera Been using this for the past couple days and I'm very impressed. It is a solid camera for travel, portraits, landscapes, and others. Only negative is it is not great for sports or wildlife due to its slower framerate and delay with the lack of a mirror. For everything else it does perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not backward Compatible. Just received my EOS R from Canon, overall the camera is good, however my SDXC UHS-1 cards did not work. I tried 6 different cards non of them worked. According to the documentation these cards should be compatible. I called Canon spoke to support they told me there is a switch in the menu to enable these cards before you can use them. However we could not find the switch. The engineer at canon stated they took out the option in production units and made it auto feature. I am having them replace the unit and hopefully it was a defective unit with a bad card reader. Does any one have similar issue?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Pictures But! Two issues I have encountered are slow and clunky Auto Focus. Near impossible with Birds. I set my focus point and when in view finder it walks around on it's own. For Landscapes and Stills it produces a great picture. Canon has to update the Auto Focus, hopefully future Firmware will address this.

The AF system is great and can use a firmware to make it superb and outsanding. Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Decision First, you should know that I suffer from a genetic abnormality common to many men of Scottish ancestry. I have deep pockets, but extraordinarily short arms. LOL. Spending money on a new camera is something that I don’t do lightly. I’ve also been in the Canon ecosystem for quite a few years now. My wife and I started with Rebel T3i’s some years ago, then moved to 80D’s for the past year or two. Between us, we’ve invested a significant amount of money in both EF and EFS lenses, and other Canon specific equipment. As our skill levels and photography requirements have advanced, we’ve both been discussing the move to a full frame platform, but we were really struggling with the idea of how much of our expensive lens inventory we’d have to leave behind. We were also hesitant to invest a large sum of money into an expensive camera like the 5DmIV and others because the future seems to be moving toward mirrorless. We wanted to make sure our investment was ‘future proof’. Then they announced the EOS R. We’ve been continually impressed with the quality of our Canon cameras, so we eagerly read a lot of the negative comments and watched all of the ‘disappointed’ reviews of the EOS R on YouTube, but as we looked over the specs for this camera, it’s competitive and contemporary feature set and price, I just couldn’t imagine we’d be disappointed by the purchase. Now I can tell you I absolutely made the right decision when I purchased this camera. I’ve been shooting with the EOS-R for a few of weeks now, and every day I’m blown away by its incredible quality and every day there are new capabilities I’m learning about. It’s the perfect solution to all of our needs. I had a long and specific list of features that I needed satisfied in order to justify the purchase of a new camera: I needed a full frame, mirrorless platform. Competitive pixel count and specifications. 4K video. Good low light performance. Common Canon interface (I didn’t want to relearn an entire ecosystem), a STABLE platform, and access to ALL of the lenses I already own. There was only one camera that checked EVERY box, and that was the EOS-R. The value proposition with this camera is just enourmous. It’s built on the same platform as the 5DmIV, which remains a very well regarded platform for both still and video photography. It’s quality and low-light performance is exceptional, and it’s also incredibly stable, which was a very deliberate (and frankly brilliant) move by Canon. By basing it on a rock solid and well regarded current platform they’ve ensured that their new offering will offer high quality AND be completely stable. And, even though it has every competitive modern feature that most shooters could want, it still won’t suffer the bugs and failures that are inevitable with completely new designs. I can’t tell you how happy I am with the fit and finish of this camera, and the extreme quality of the images. A $99 adapter gave me access to every lens I own, complete with all of the stabilization and autofocus functions, and… BIG bonus here… when I mount one of my EF-S lenses on the R – the camera automatically handles the crop factor. How elegant. And, as someone who’s actually owned and shot an EOS R for the past few weeks, I feel I’m qualified to also talk about all the negative comments you might hear about – which are all being made by people who don’t actually own or use it. Here are some of the things that you’ll hear from ‘disappointed’ non owners. 1. Lack of two card slots – Who cares. Older CF cards were somewhat prone to corruptions, but contemporary SD cards are rock solid and it’s extremely rare that they become corrupted. I’m not concerned. 2. Cropped in 4K shooting. Again, who cares. So does the 5D. So do many FF cameras. I purchased an inexpensive EF-S wide angle to overcome this (see the rave about the adapter below). Problem solved. And… I can answer anyone’s who has questions about the video capabilities of this camera with one term. C LOG. The EOS R has it built in. That’s should tell you everything you need to know about the quality of the video available on the R. 3. And finally, the lack of IBIS. I’m boggled by why anyone is surprised or ‘disappointed’ by this. Canon has made it very clear that they believe that moving IS to the lenses results in much higher quality stabilization because it’s specifically tailored to each lenses geometry. They believe IBIS to be inferior because it’s too broad. No Canon made has ever had In Body Image Stabilization. I can’t imagine they ever will given Canon’s design preferences. It certainly not an issue for me. Don’t let those who don’t own or have never shot an EOS R talk you out of one of the better decisions you can make. Just a quick example of what life is like with the EOS-R: I’ve been agonizing over the purchase of one of the more expensive Canon EF 70-200 lenses, and struggling with the difference in price between the F4 version of the lens, and the way more expensive F2.8 version. Apart from the fact that it’s awesome that even with the R’s new RF mount, I still have access to Canon’s entire existing EF and EFS inventory, I’ve also discovered that the low light performance of the EOS-R is so much better that it makes the significantly lower priced F4 version of the lens perform to a level where it’s not even a worry. I recommend the EOS R VERY highly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for me! I waited a long time for Canon to offer a full frame mirrorless camera. I passed on all the others because I have been heavily invested in Canon since the days of the old rangefinders. I trust them and have never been disappointed. At Christmas this year I purchased the EOS-R and have been blown away with how amazing this camera is! The menu and controls are easy to learn even for a novice. The image quality and color rendition are exceptional and in my opinion unsurpassed. It's a sturdy camera with rugged construction elements and light weight. One thing that really amazed me was how compliant this camera is with all of the other Canon lenses that I already have. With the proper EOS-R to EFadapter, my EF lenses work better on the EOS-R than on my EF mount cameras! Being able to autofocus and expose with my 100-400mm L II lens with a 2x and 1.4 X extenders coupled together allowed me to take breathtaking images of the lunar eclipse in January. My older EZ and Macro speedlites work flawlessly on the EOS-R, as well as my older Canon FD, FL, and Canon rangefinder lenses (with third party adapters. And the ultimate pleasure for me was when I saw the high resolution, low noise performance of this camera at the higher ISO speeds. Beautiful images at 12800! Never seen anything like it! Rated 5 out of 5 by from EOS R #2 Bricked itself I've had my second EOS R for 7 days and now this one has bricked itself as well. It will not turn on and the shutter cover that usually comes down when the camera is off is stuck up. The whole thing in unresponsive to anything. 2 EOS R this month to have broken.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great camera Moved from a 5d Mkiii and just love it. Some people don't like the new controls layout, treat it with an open mind and you will enjoy it. A small full frame filled with great features. I was planning to buy a 5D Mkiv but after some research I came across the EOS R and decided to go for it. Glad I did so. Buy the addaptor and you can use all your EF lenses and extenders with no efect to the picture quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Nice Full Frame Mirrorless Camera! My apologies up front for the length of this review. Let me start off by stating I purchased the EOS R (w/RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM and control ring adapter) directly from Canon since I am able to receive a very nice discount through work. I am also a very dedicated enthusiast photographer learning every day. Just stating my observations and opinions – I hope this review helps you in your decision to purchase or not to purchase an EOS R. I am very glad the EOS R eco-system came out when it did since I was already considering moving up from my EOS 80D DSLR (APS-C sensor) to a full-frame (FF) sensor DSLR like the EOS 6D Mark II or 5d Mark IV. So, this purchase/upgrade made perfect sense for me and my video/photography styles since I already wanted to upgrade anyways and I am also heavily invested already in the Canon EOS eco-system with Canon EF/EF-S lenses, Canon Speedlites and accessories like SD cards and the LP-6N battery (which both the 80D and R bodies use for their battery). BTW – my 430EX III-RT Speedlite works great on the EOS R while some other mirrorless systems cannot use their older speedlights. Just one minor issue using a Speedlite with Auto ISO set in Av, Tv, or Fv modes. The ISO does not drop below 1600 if first looking at a dark scene where the ISO goes above 1600 – the Auto ISO will only come back down to 1600 – no lower. If looking at a brighter scene that is below ISO 1600, the Auto ISO adjusts just fine with a speedlite. Auto ISO, with a Speedlite, should drop the ISO to 100-800 depending on the amount of light, Aperture and Shutter speeds, etc. Canon will probably fix this in its next firmware update. Price and performance wise, the EOS R falls right between the 2 FF DSLRs that I was considering anyways. For my lens collection, all of the following lenses will work great on the EOS R (with an adapter) – fantastic job Canon! - Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS II USM - Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM - Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM - Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM (nano USM) - Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM (nano USM) - Yes, I know a lot of redundancy, but I really like zoom/telephoto lenses and compression in my shots - I also got “L” lens fever after purchasing the EF 100mm f/2.8 L Macro IS USM So, on to the negatives of the EOS R: a.) no In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS), b.) no 2nd card slot and c.) cropped 4k video. These features do not really matter to me since these are not on my priority list for my video/photo shooting style or my work flow in processing videos/images. Answer a.) in my opinion, lens stabilization work better than IBIS, but still would have been nice for lenses without built-in stabilization. Answer b.) a 2nd card slot would have been nice, but I just honestly don’t care either way. Answer c.) If I ever feel the burning need to be a vlogger, I will purchase the EF-S 10-18mm STM lens, since they will both be cropped together, otherwise cropped 4k video or full 1080P is fine for my types of video work. Now on to the positives of the EOS R. One of my wishes came true with the RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM – first “L” lens with nano USM motors – a HUGE plus! Canon heard its customers! Based off my experiences with the nano USM lenses listed and the new RF 24-105 F/4L, the nano USM motors are blazing fast for auto-focusing and dead silent. The USM motors are fast and silent too, but definitely not as fast nor as silent as the nano USM motors. So, using a nano USM lens, along with the silent shooting mode from the EOS R, this makes for a great combo doing video work and/or for taking photographs in places where you do not want sounds coming from your camera (weddings, funerals, churches, school functions, etc.)! - Image quality – very nice WOW factor – all I can say here if you are already a Canon shooter the images are crisp, clean and impressive as always - Ergonomics – very nice – fits well in the hand just like a DSLR but a little smaller and lighter - Menu system – just like my 80D - very similar if you are already a Canon shooter – it will take me some time to get use to the slight differences though - Color Science – you get that great all around Canon color science – matches very nicely with my 80D - I absolutely LOVE the new 3rd Control ring and the fully articulated screen – just brilliant! Especially since I am so use to the fully articulated screen on the 80D. - Another HUGE plus with having a mirrorless camera – no more micro-adjusting lenses! YAY! WOOT! PARTY TIME! - Micro-adjusting lenses is a very time consuming and a very tedious process to get lenses correctly focused in, even using an automated tool like FoCal. - Having the new RF fast glass available to purchase and the drop-in circular polarizing/Variable ND filters (Behind the lens! No more purchasing different size filters for the front of the lenses!) – more huge pluses! The other companies with mirrorless cameras do not even come close to these new very fast aperture lenses and filter options. If you have read this far down into my review – then you must be seriously considering the EOS R/RF mount eco-system. In the end, I am just like a little kid at their birthday party or waking up the morning of Christmas – Very Excited and Very Happy All at the Same Time!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stills shooter I have been a Canon 5DIII shooter for years and did not step up to the 5DIV as I was happy with what I had. But, with the release of a close equivalent of the 5DIV in a mirrorless format with a flip screen I went out and bought the EOS R last week. The flip screen is a difference-maker. It now enables me to get unique angles for shots of which I used to have to get on the ground or hold high and hope I had the right composition. I also really enjoy the touch screen and the wealth of customization I can do to set up the camera so it’s optimized for my needs. As a stills shooter, the only thing I miss is the joystick. The new screen method to select your focus point is a little awkward with your face also up to the screen when shooter through the view finder. I appreciate the new Touch Bar in that it’s innovative, but it does not provide any tangible feedback to let me know, by touch, that I have activated or selected anything. When a photographer’s eyes are otherwise engaged on a subject, the sensation of a button click or depression is helpful. I’m a little concerned about the single card slot, but if I’m honest, I’ve never had one fail. But, you don’t have to be in an accident to know you should always wear your seatbelt. At this price point it should have two slots. Otherwise I am happy with my decision to buy the EOS R. I have now done one shoot with it so far and absolutely love how easy it is to choose focus, customize settings and be able to fill us more on the shot and less on the camera. A great first crack at full frame mirrorless from Canon!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Magnificent Camera coming from a canon eos 80d I can say that the jump that I have given with this camera is abysmal, with all its specifications I have more than enough. excellent approach, magnificent sharpness, excellent view and argonomy, and excellent colors and textures, I've been with her for a month and I have not yet found any problem. as an amateur photographer covers all my expectations and needs

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I simply love it It's simply what I needed: a compact, high quality camera (I rarely do video), with spectacular new lenses (currently just the 24-105mm, but ordered the 500mm and will get the 28-70mm later in Dec 2018), excellent ergonomics and more than needed features for a prosumer product. Will buy exclusively RF lenses from now onwards, and anxiously waiting for more advanced bodies.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Home run I have been a Canon user for years--film cameras, their first digital cameras, through the 5dmII and now the 5ds r. I also have many Canon L lenses. I bought the EOS R for family travel, etc. I couldn't be happier with it. (note: I do stills only Here are some thoughts. Pros: Focus is spot on--no micro adjustments necessary. The first lens I tried it with was the 50 f/1.2L. Sharp, sharp, sharp. (On the 5ds r, I had to use the micro adjust to get the same result). Also tried it with the Sigma 85 f/1.4 Art--same thing--perfect. The Sigma is a lens that I gave up on with the 5ds r--focus on that camera was just too inconsistent for me. Love the flip-out screen, for the obvious reasons. No more getting down on the ground to take photos from that vantage point. Histogram display in the viewfinder is very helpful. Especially paired with the control ring--I set my control ring for exposure compensation. I can not only see the exposure simulation, but also the histogram while I adjust. No more take the photo, then look at the histogram. Greatly expanded range of focus points. I set the multifunction bar to focus select; one side tap for eye detect on/off; the other side tap for focus point drag. I can then easily--without taking my eye from the viewfinder--set single point AF and move my thumb around the lcd screen to whatever point I want to set. Great to be able to select a focus point based on composition you want rather than where an AF point is available. (BTW--regarding AF system, it's true that eye focus works even in very low light!) Multifunction bar. OK--as I've said, I'm also used to the usual Canon setup. But with a little time investment and experimentation I made the transition with no issue and find it to be a great tool. Especially along with the control ring. Control ring. I've been using mine primarily for exposure comp, but also set it to aperture. Makes the system very flexible. I also got the 24-105 f/4L kit lens. Very nice range and performance. Finally--form factor. This is a matter of personal taste, but the overall size reminds me of film SLR cameras. Very comfortable for me. Cons: Have had a bit of lagginess occasionally. I expect this will be corrected with firmware update. Kit lens is large and a bit heavy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Image quality in a lighter load The EOS R is a fun camera to use, light weight with great image quality. The controls are similar to the other canon DSLR cameras with a minimal learning curve except for a few extra control buttons. I use the EOS R with my Canon 5d mark 3 and 6D and that covers my complete range and types of photography uses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic value In the last 7 years I have progressed from the Canon SL1, to 77D, to the RP, now the EOS R. Each camera has been great, and each has been an improvement. The EOS R is clearly the best camera I have owned. I received the R this week, charged the battery, and went to a local park to shoot. It was dull light, late afternoon and quite breezy. I shot handheld, often using the touchscreen. I used the RF 35mm lens. My immediate impressions are that the R is clearly faster than the RP, the focus is fast and accurate, and the files are excellent to work with. If someone is thinking about moving to FF or upgrading, my opinion is to jump on this deal, the R is a terrific value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent eye detection, lightening fast focusing I received this camera 12-2019. I’ve owned several full frame Canon’s. The photos are all Canon color science with good detail, and consistently sharp focus. The mirrorless viewfinder is very good and helps a great deal in using exposure compensation compared to traditional mirror based view finders. I really like the FV mode as well. It’s going to take me some time to transition from the 6D mk2 controls to the R but I’m getting there. Video is great in both HD and 4K. The digital stabilization works way better than I expected but there is a crop. So far, I find the camera to be a great way to leverage all my EF L glass and move into mirrorless.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EOS R is a great camera! I bought the EOS R to replace an aging 5D Mark III. I've used primarily for stills so far. I have to say, this is a great camera and a very nice update from the 5D III. Autofocus performs well and support for manual focus lenses is very well thought out. Overall, I'm very impressed with how this camera performs for still imaging.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very versatile - Great for Stills and Video I have had this camera for 6 months and so far I am very impressed with the results. It does an excellent job for both still and video photography. The RF lenses are superb and the backward compatibility with both EF and EF-S lenses is also a great feature, although when using EF-S lenses the camera only uses a portion of the sensor (it crops to APS-C size. This works out well for shooting 4K video since the camera crops that (you don't lose any fidelity as the 4K looks great). The camera is very reliable - no overheating issues and it makes a great upgrade from an APS-C sensor camera. The low light capabilities are worth the upgrade. I have shot on Canon cameras since my first SLR, the A-1 and that camera still works almost 40 years later. I can whole heartedly recommend this camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a beauty! I was holding on to my temptations to buy a mirrorless full frame to add into my collection. I was reading and watching a lot of reviews and as I read and see more and more about EOS R, i just could not resist anymore until thanksgiving. Bought it and started admiring its hidden features everyday. Every day I am learning a new feature and oh boy its a thing of beauty and the details it captures is breathtaking. You can only feel this only when you own it. Fantastic piece of equipment, never felt so satisfied and happy with a Canon product. I started my Canon experience since the 70s Canon Canonet 28 (still have it!), today i feel like I have climbed the top of this experience with my new Canon EOS R.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much More Than Poor Specs to keep this short the EOS R is the easiest, smoothest, and most satisfying camera I've ever had the pleasure of using. It is not a pro sports photography or a paramount level cinematography camera but it does everything effectively, efficiently, and has definitely exceeded my expectations in pre and post production. PS i just tried to upload some of my images and the files are "Too Large" for canons website...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still Loving the EOS R This is an updated review. I purchased the EOS R last June. It is my first full frame digital camera and an upgrade to my EOS 80D, which I will still use when I want the extra reach with a telephoto lens or need the built-in flash. I have been using Canon cameras for 40 years now. The EOS R is working very well for me. My workhorse lens is the RF 24-105 f/4 L which I use most of the time. This combination is very sharp and the autofocus is very quick and quiet. There are very few shots that the AF misses which is great because my eyesight is not as good as it used to be. I am impressed. Recently, I was photographing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for several days. Part of the time it was very overcast. I used the camera hand held on many shots with a higher ISO than what is normal for me. I was quickly moving from scene to scene and just didn't want to have to use a tripod. Even at ISO 640-1000 the image quality is amazing, with no noticeable noise. The camera is very close to the same size as my 80D and even more comfortable to hold. It just feels good and balanced in my hands. I am pretty much used to using the menu controls and have set the control ring on the lens to ISO. Before buying it, I didn't think I would like the EVF but I absolutely love it, especially in low light. I am very happy with this camera!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Flexible, diverse camera that needs to be sturdier I love the functionality of the camera and how it works with the EF lenses I own. I am super impressed with the menu, applications and flexibility. I've worked with my 7d2 for so long and I love it too partly because of the control, flexibility between video and photo and even for the weight. I mention the weight of the 7d because that is one thing I don't like about the EOS R. The "R" is so light weight and smaller than the 7d I hardly feel it in my hands and often times want it to be bulkier and sturdier. The lightweight frame allows the R to adapt to a gimbal or a cinema rig more than the 7d but I still feel that it feels cheap or like an amateur pro-sumer camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Silent Satisfactory Partner for My EOS 5 Solid build as typical Canon EOS series though feels less solid possibly due to the decreased weight. Wish this had stabilization and perhaps should have waited for the next upgrade, but since all my lenses have built in stabilization it hasn't been a problem, though the focus doesn't seem to do as well in low light (with the same lenses as my EOS5. Since menus are similar it has been fairly easy switching between my EOS5 and this EOS R. I got this mainly to utilize it's silent mode when taking pictures of musicians within quiet listening rooms. The silent shutter mode limits the frequency of shots and I do note a slowness to image coming up on this new camera view screen even when not in silent mode (and yet using a faster SD card in the EOS R). Overall I am pleased with the overall performance but when shooting outdoors and/or in noisy venues I will still utilize my EOS 5 (which also allows the double cards).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon's future is bright. After watching basically every video on the EOS R, with claims that Canon had disappointed everyone with a lackluster release, I trusted my instinct and purchased one anyways. My previous Canon cameras have been the Rebel T1i, 5D Mark 2 and 6D. This camera improves on Canon's awesome legacy and paves the way for an awesome new lens format with all of the benefits of mirrorless technology. Lightning fast focus, incredible ISO performance, beautiful video (despite the 4K crop and a familiar yet intuitive menu system. Couldn't be happier with my purchase. I think people were expecting a 1D type of release when this is more in line with a 5D release.
