I've been waiting for black ink cartridges for weeks but haven't seen any available anywhere. I contacted customer service but unfortunately they weren't able to help. I found an comparable Epson with a number of ink options so I ended up buying it so I could continue working.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It just works! I've had my printer for a short while now, and I'm very pleased with it. It's straight forward and easily does what it's supposed to do. Set up was easy, (and I'm an elder with only so much computer tech know-how) and shipping service from Brother was fast and convenient. It seems rather "plain" because of the interface, but all the bells and whistles are there. The software works well with my MacBook Air. I have found Brother very efficient and friendly to deal with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ink use never print in color, yet I the red and yellow cartridges are empty and I can't print anything until they are replaced. Other than that I like the printer. I plugged my laptop into it and pressed the print button on my laptop and it started printing. I didn't have to set anything up. That's what I call a smart printer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a Shakedown! Bought this printer after its 10-year-old predecessor locked up after an update. I quizzed reps at Brother in two calls before purchasing this model on whether non-genuine ink could be used. They said "yes." Fast forward 3 months, after I refilled the starter cartridges provided and fired up the machine. All sorts of error codes popped up, and the printer wouldn't recognize its own original cartridges. The error codes could not be cleared and the machine would not function. Called Brother again about generic ink and non-OEM cartridges, and this time, the Brother rep said: "We say they might work; we don't guarantee that they will." Really? He also said there was no error-clearing code he could provide, even though these cartridges worked fine that morning and were only half-way depleted when I filled them. The only solution offered was to buy their overpriced ink cartridges or join their Refresh ink program. I feel like I've just had some sort of mob encounter -- a real shakedown attempt! ("You pay us, lady, and you get your machine back.") How is this allowable? Reviews on other websites for this printer are also starting to mention trouble using non-Brother ink. Brother printers used to be solid, trustworthy machines that stood the test of time. I could never recommend one now. I am currently shopping for a tank printer made by another company.

It does drain your black ink pretty quickly and if you scroll down you can see that the most commonly used ink is consistently out of stock. The inconsistency has really turned me off Brother products altogether. Ive had the printer for a couple years now and it seems I am always having to buy ink somewhere different.

For one thing, it makes a great deal of noise when it moves the paper to begin a print job. The other is that, although the printer is working wirelessly (i.e., without a cable connection to my computer), the light that indicates that it s connected wirelessly does not light up. I've had two other Brother printers: the MFC-J870 DW. which, in my opinion, were of higher quality.

Printer is weak in that, it loses connection to router when turned on and takes forever and multiple sheets of paper to get it back online. The software has difficulty recognizing the modem not to mention the directions to re-establish connection are terrible.

As a senior, I had a little trouble getting the scan option set up but Customer Service chat helped and the scan is now working. Able to connect via internet to my phone, ipad and computer. This printer is much faster than my previous Brother Ink Jet, color photos turn our great, and it takes up less space. I am very pleased!

I did not buy it for the scanner but I love the printer calibration. Print up a test page drop it on the scanner and bingo the printer is calibrated. Excellent job Brother. I bought this as a 3rd printer in my home. I needed one on the main floor of the house because climbing stairs has become difficult. I own 2 Brother laser printers one of them is a high end office machine the 9840CDW. I always bought Brother printers because they are perfection. This new one is no exception. The Wi-Fi setup was a breeze. For this price it’s a bargain. I signed up for the automatic ink replenishment because it was inexpensive and this is not my main printer so I only print about 40 pages a month with it. The big jobs I save for the 9840. Also this printer is very fast much faster than the laser printers because there is no warmup. So don’t bother with Hp and go with Brother. I was never happy with my HP printer so years ago I switched and never looked back. No disappointments here.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just ok, when it actually works! I bought this printer when our old HP died, and it has accomplished basic one-sided scanning and printing for a few months. I have never been able to get it to scan in duplex (2-sided), nor print on both sides either. In fact, the initial yellow ink just ran out after about 20-30 pages, and although the black is still at 50% and the cyan and magenta are still at 25%, the printer and Windows simply refuse to print ANYTHING at all. Not even a black and white single page letter in “eco” mode!! If you like printing rather than not being able to until you run the the store to buy more ink, do NOT select a Bother printer!! You have been warned.

Love the auto 2sided print function which our older printer / scanner didn't have. One concern is that when copying the quality is set at Best, cannot switch it to normal. Best is not at all necessary & uses extra (expensive) ink. So I have to scan the document, save to a pdf , then print the pdf which can have adjusted quality. The plastic door / cover clips for the print cartridges seems easy to break. The output tray could be larger since the paper falls on the floor. I usually print only a few pages at a time so it not a real problem but inconvenient. Overall , it serves our household needs well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Scanner & Printer! This is a great All-In-One printer. I brought it primarily for the scanner, and even with that logic, I made a good choice. The self-feed scanner is a breeze to use, and it’s very easy to scan a stack of documents and have them go straight to my Mac instantly via my home Wi-Fi. Then, the icing on the cake is that this is also a really good inkjet printer. I have been using Brother Laser printers for many years, and found them to be amazingly reliable. I expect this one to be the same. It’s very versatile and every feature works well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Disappointed Printer is fast and efficient. I use it primarily for envelopes. I am disappointed with the quality of prints for photos compared to Epson. This is probably because it only has 4 toner carts and not 5 with a photo black as does Epson. No complaints otherwise.

Also, in order to recycle the cartridges, it’s not as easy as HPink to return. Brother needs to supply the return packets with their ink. Mine may end up in the trash due to this issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Printer, but beware of the Ink cartridges! I like the printer. It was easy to setup and initialize. No problems so far. Only one complaint - the Ink. Encountered my first ink cartridge to run out of ink (black). NO WARNING that it was getting low on ink. Did not have a spare. The unfortunate thing, the printer will NOT operate without an ink cartridge. Tried printing the document in blue/red ink - no go. The printer is setting there dead in the water, because there are no Black Ink cartridges to be found (Tried Brother, Amazon, Best Buy, Staples, and etc.). To me, this is a poor design and if I had known this before my purchase, I would have have purchased another brand printer.

Plug in the cords and follow step by step instructions on your computer. Installing the ink is a breeze nothing to it. You can setup by using ethernet or wifi. It's double sided print capable, which I absolutely love! Ink seems to be lasting still almost full. Printed about 80 sheets in 2 weeks. You can use the Brother mobile connect app and be able to print from your phone. The screen on printer is also touch screen and does it all. It prints quick, dries fast and you can also buy ink cartridges online to replace. It's definitely a good, worth it printer.

The printer has a easy startup guide and if you have ever used a printer before you can have it up and running in less than 10 minutes. I like that the printer is not to big where it takes up alot of room and I like the display picture on the front and is nice and clear. The big thing I like it has double sided printing!! That alone saves so much time! I really like that you can link your phone so you can get stuff printed while you are on the go. Using this printer really saves me alot if time and the print is clear and looks great! I use printers for coupons and those have to be really clear or it won't work at the register and so far has worked great! I also used it to make flyers for a group I am in and the pictures and wording looked great! This printer also is so much faster at printing than my old printer. I am very pleased. I also think that while it is printing it is not loud which is great to! After using this printer I just wish I would have had it before now!

They seemed very complicated for setup and just overall not a good buy. Looked into Brother printers and very impressed what I saw so I thought give them a chance. I'm SO GLAD I did. Setup was a breeze and mobile printing is so easy! Best purchase of a printer in a long time!

The features on this printer model are perfect for work and school. It is nice sized, yet compact and great for small spaces. The capabilities range from holding 150 pages, wireless printing capabilities and document scanning. You can scan to and print from Dropbox, Google Drive, and One Drive directly from the printer. The 2.7 screen is a color touch screen. The printer comes with one set of ink and each ink cartridge last for about 200 prints. The replacement ink is pretty fairly priced. This is a good printer for at home workers and even college kids.

It has the color & black ink, built in wireless interface so you can easily access things from your phone! It prints things pretty quickly and I love that I can fax things to my child’s online school, the only downfall was getting it setup maybe it’s because it was my first time.

Though I only use brother, i am very disappointed in this unit as it continually prompts me that there is a paper jam. Upon checking the back, there is no paper. This happens every time i print. I have to shut the power to get it back to printer status. Please send me a Return Authorization for this unit. It is apparently defective. thank you.

I always had poor customer service with HP for years and the setup for HP printers was always problematic due to the poor customer service. I did a deep dive on the internet for best printers to see what else was out there and found this Brothers printer that was a little more expensive but offered better features and great reviews! The poor reviews I read on HP printers were consistent as to 2 aspects: poor customer service and being forced to sign up for future ink refills automatically sent to your home and not being able to remove this from the order. My Brothers printer was easy to set up in half the time it took for the HP Printer. I have already performed an update to this printer easily, no need for customer service. The quality is much better than HP and assimilated with my laptop quickly. It is worth the small amount more for this printer. It prints from my phone or laptop with ease. I am never going back to HP!!

It does not wake from sleep mode and usually shuts off. This could be great but not maintaining the network is a deal breaker. I wish I could return it.

I am absolutely in love with this brother printer it connects straight to your internet wireless and it has tons of options for printing and scanning and faxing it literally does everything plus some. You can use your phone to see ink levels and all the options for this printer right from your phone all you do is download the app and your set to go. Also you can print things straight from your phone you don't need to use a computer if you don't want to. I think this printer is literally the best one I've ever owned and I'm super happy with all the things it does I feel like this is a all in one and I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great reliable printer.

Has a lot of nice functions and good overall print speed. This is a perfect addition to a small home office or work setting. It has been a fantastic printer for my stay at home work environment.

I have never established a password with Brother. Such updates should be pushed to a device without requiring a password, as it is done with the other printer makers.

I love the fact that you can print from anywhere even if you are not home. I thought I could live with the washed out colors but I am in a course where I need to print out the notes. The headings are in bright green and when I print it they come out dark forest green and in low light conditions it looks like I printed the page in black and white.

I was amazed and grateful..as I watched other people having issues with, or having to replace their printers. I wouldn't have needed another printer at all, except my operating system was upgraded. So, the MFC was no longer compatible with my MAC. My first choice was to buy another Brother. I shopped around for this one. And, it is another great Brother printer. It's a little smaller than my MFC, and also has all the great functions I'm used to, and it is just as easy to use.

I like Brother Printers and find them more economical on ink, offer better print quality, and are more reliable than Cannon or HP (especially HP printers. The MFC-J4510 stopped printing colors. Black was fine but colors would not print. I didnt need all the features of the 4510 so I selected the MFC-J1170DW. I am VERY pleased with the ease of setup (Wi-Fi) it was up and running in 15 minutes. All of the required drivers and programming were downloaded and installed quickly, no glitches, and worked first time out. Print quality is AWESOME, duplex and two sided print, all the bells and whistles, plus PC Fax if you want it, and its a document scanner. These guys make good machines, that dont drink ink like a drunken sailor, and puts out a high quality copy, scan, or print quickly and from ALL your devices. Good Job Brother

Perfect size not taking up much room, ink easy to install, prints like a charm with our wifi. Easy is important for this senior who struggles a bit after a stroke. Have had zero issues with it. Plus shipping was fast and printer boxed well which was important since it looked like UPS punted it into their truck.

I love being able to print from my phone so that I don't have to be in my office on my desktop or on my laptop. I typically check my email on my phone, so this is ultra convenient. Ink was provided with the unit, and the size is not overwhelming while offering all the options you would expect from a high end printer. The scanner and print options are much needed in my house!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brother MFC-J1170DW Using the printer on 2 Linux Mint and 1 Win10 computers. Downloaded and installed all available drivers from Brother. Basically, the printer prints well from any of the printers except that the printer has to be manually woken by touching the printer display before it will print (at least, from my primarily used Linux computer). Note that I have "deep sleep" turned off. Tried to use it wirelessly, but printer would disconnect itself from the router several times a day which required that I use the small printer screen to log back on the router to use it. Wound up having to wire the printer to the router to solve this. The special scanner functions from the printer display, ie scan to computer, et al, do not work as the display says that there is no computer connected even tho I can print to, ping and login to the printer from the computer. The doc feeder appears to work OK. I have not noticed a tremendous ink usage as reported in some reviews (turning off deep sleep may have helped this as that is why I did it). Overall & as a light basic user, it is acceptable as a "beside the computer and router" printer. Would not be so if I had to depend on a wireless connection or routinely needed the printer screen scan. This is my first Brother printer and altho it basically meets my current light needs, I wonder if a more expensive version may have worked better and more comparable to other printers I have used.

The installation is very easy, you just have to plug the power supply, insert the cartridges and turn on the printer and wifi. Your computer will find it and install the proper driver. if you are using your phone, just use the given QR code.All function works great, I like the scanning part, I can digitize all my document quickly and easily. The printing is very fast which my kids appreciate a lot. I also like that the screen can rotate. In summary, I recommend this printer center, especially in these times where everybody works from home. It is easy, quick and good quality.

This is such a productive product. It has all the features you could need. Install was very easy and took no time. It’s so perfect for your home or even a small office area. Have to go to settings to change that. The only other thing is that it will not accept a setting change to print the last page first. Workable but annoying at times. Overall, I am pleased with the performance.

I love that it is wireless and very easy to set it up. It's an all in one also, so you are able to do everything, copy, print, scan, fax, all your needs met in one compact printer. A bit hard to read with our old eyes and the touch controls are really small. Time will tell if this is a great printer, but so far it is.

Here are a few comparisons. 1 The HP prints better photographs overall but the Brother is not far behind. 2) The scanner is top notch. 3) The copier is very good. 4) The setup was easy. 5) The software is good whereas the HP was a constant frustration. 6) Too early to tell about the ink except to say that photos print on the cool rather than warm side. i will experiment to see if I can get better photo printing. The ink seems moderately priced. 7) The printer quality seems to be on the "cheap" side. However, that said, it seems to work just fine. 8) I like the small footprint of the Brother. Good value. I'm happy with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love my Brother machines I bought this printer to replace my old Brother printer (still working but wanted the wireless feature). I couldn't be happier with this product. By the way, I also have a Brother 6 color embroidery machine, and a Brother Scan and Cut. I rely on the Brother embroidery machine for average 8-10 hours a day and really need to upgrade to a 9-11 color. BUT, my 6 color just keeps rocking on, and on, and on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What Good is a Printer that you Can't Use?? The printer itself is fine. The problem is, ink is not to be had anywhere. The best the company could do was estimate availability in "2 to 4 weeks." We know of a lot of small businesses whose livelihood depends on being able to print daily schedules, orders, contracts, invoices, etc; who've had to buy a different printer because of Brother's ink shortage. I've done the same, and I will be billing Brother for the cost. Brother should be ashamed of themselves.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great printer, Lousy service The printer is great. The service and follow up, not so much. I was without a printer for a month because the ink cartridges were dry. It took an act of Congress to get them to understand that a printer is useless without ink. At first, the retailer wanted me to buy replacement cartridges for a brand new printer that I had been unable to even print proper test pages. Finally, Brothers agreed to replace the cartridges. I only had to wait three weeks for them to arrive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Scanner is a disaster The printer seems to work fine, but the scanner is a disaster. It doesn't work and just pumps blank paper through the feeder..no messages with any useful information. Looking online, it seems a lot of people have the same problem...Even worse, Brother is useless as far as fixing the problem...no definitive analysis of what may be wrong and just a bunch of gibberish online as far as maybe being fixable by finding the right driver.. If you cared about the customers you've fleeced with an inferior product, you would put a simple down load on your web page with simple instructions on how to install and fix the problem. But you don't. Definitely not world class behavior.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small But Mighty This printer is small but mighty. Easy to set up and produces high quality prints. Very reasonably priced too. My only complaint is that I wanted a set of spare ink cartridges and they are hard to come by.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The printer would be great if only I could get ink My office purchased this printer for me in January and it worked very well for my needs until I ran out of black ink which cannot be found anywhere. The printer is absolutely useless to me now because it won't run without a black ink cartridge. I am seriously thinking of returning the printer and buying a different brand so I will be able to access ink for it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Home Office & Personal Printer Bought the Brother MFC-J1170DW to replace an HP printer that had mechanical issues showing up. Researched printers for over a month before purchasing this Brother printer. I am very please with my choice. This printer turns on very quickly compared to my former printer. It is ready to print in just about 5 seconds or less after I power it up. Its screen is bright, clear and easy to read. It is very, very quiet and quickly produces copies, even double sided copies. Am very pleased with this Brother printer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Could be better Printer does alright but sometimes has issues with scanning documents straight despite having the document lined up in the corner of the glass, and the document feeder sometimes does not process documents straight either. I usually have to correct this in PDF after saving to my PC.
