Terrible, terrible printer: A thirsty ink hog with meh results, frequent paper jam notices with no jam and other bogus "errors", in short the very WORST printer I ever had. Only 5 months old and already more problems than in entire 10 years I had my previous HP budget printer. Trashing this Brother!

I contacted Brother but did not get a response and my warranty has expired. I only used a few times and had it for less than 6 months. I don’t like giving bad reviews but my frustration is greater than its performance.

Nowhere on the face of this planet. How is that??? I took the printer back for a refund. I have no faith in Brother for my future printing needs.

This was an inexpensive all in one I purchased because I wanted a machine that printed color. I have had a brother laser printer that I was very pleased with which was why I went with this unit. It has worked quite well for handling the tasks I was using it for. I am now very close to running out of black ink and it has been almost impossible to find any ink. I also haven't seen anything on the website about what is causing the issue.

Black ink ran out, but I looked everywhere, for hours, I could not find any black ink. This is horrible, no place have inks for this model. And they are still selling this product without warning buyers knowing that they dont have black inks. I understand this as a SCAMMING tactic before you buy. READ THE REVIEWS everywhere, you will see huuge number of people stuck with this nonfunctioning printer. Brother, you must make sure you have enough ink before selling any more of this printers and make current customers happy ! Otherwise you are creating even more shortage.

When I bought a new laptop, I discovered that the old copier wasn't compatible with the new Brother J1010DW (driver no longer available). I wish I had bought this copier much sooner. Before I bought the Brother I asked everyone I knew for suggestions on which brand was the current leader. My son-in-law said he has a Brother and said it's been terrific, so since I respect his opinion I bought one. Boy was he right! It's been great! It wakes up faster, prints MUCH faster, and it's design is awesome.

Only thing I wish was different is that it had mobile fax instead of the hard fax line. Noone has a home telephone to use it anymore.

I have contacted customer service and I get a "Thank You message. They did not read the message. I cannot find any ink anywhere, so basically I have a printer that I cannot use. Their response? Contact us in about 4 to 6 weeks. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE. I guess I am going to have to find another printer.

Set up is easy if you follow directions and have a USB-to-USB cable. It's quieter compared to my old Epson XP-850. I don't print that often so I can't speak to how often you need to replace ink. Very satisfied. Recommend.

This "newer" printer is also much louder than my MFC485. How does that happen? Hopefully some 3rd party ink becomes available for this printer because I might just end up donating/selling this printer based on Ink Cost alone. Other than that, the printer prints nicely.

After setting the time using the software on my computer, the display on the machine still shows 1 hour ahead. I can't seem to correct this. Otherwise, no complaints at this stage.

The printer lasted about 15 years so I knew there was no other company I’d consider. I’m the union representative for my office in Long Island so I need to use a printer frequently. This one is great and I can print directly from my smartphone being on the same Wi-Fi network. It performs great. It’s compact so it can easily be wired with a full computer setup or be kept separate on a small bookshelf. In the past I had a Dell, Eason, and another brand that currently slips my mind; but once I purchased a Brother, there is no comparison. This one represents the brand very well.

I do not even do a moderate amount of print jobs, and I am getting notifications on toner. That's not right. But this is my only complaint.

It has been rendered useless for even scanning to my computer. I purchased it for Christmas and my black ink went down rather quickly. I ordered more, and it seems to be out everywhere. I finally was able to purchase an order for a full kit on Ebay, but I don't need all the color ink -just black. I haven't received it, but I do see it is on its way. I reached out to Brother to ask if there is a problem with that particular ink, but the question was never answered. I was sent a link that it was in stock at Office Depot in a city near me, but when I clicked on the link an hour after receiving it, it was out of stock. The email told me to wait 2-4 weeks if it was out of stock once I clicked on it. I am really sorry I ever purchased the printer. I am a teacher and need a reliable printer that has no shortage on ink. I wish I knew if manufacturing has had issues with that particular number and, if so, how soon can I see that issue resolved. I asked this but that question was never answered.

I followed the directions, but was asked for a password to access the internet. I was confused by that since the printer was already paired with the internet via my laptop and iPhone. I researched on google and ultimately found that I could download a Brothers firmware update tool to accomplish the same result. However, it asked for a password also. After more research, I found that it was looking for password found on the back of the printer. That seemed to work. It might help if the alert/directions specify what password is required.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT machine so far regardless of price point. Rarely write reviews but this product requires a shout-out. Have always used other companies’ printers. Have never been totally happy with performance. Researched many options when i needed a new printhead which made no sense to replace. Was leery of this machine given it was so inexpensive. But it had a lot of features that other units in this price range, or even at much higher prices, did not have, such as an automatic document feed. This was the absolute easiest printer to set up with very few, very simple directions in about 45 minutes I had the printer set up, on our home wireless network and attached to my and my wife's laptops and phones. Amazing. I'm not using the fax as we just do not need it. Easy, fast printing (for short documents). Only have it a week or so but so far very happy. It was a little cumbersome to sign up for an ink subscription but was able to do that on a laptop rather than on phone as I was first trying to do. .Did the monthly ink subscription plan which also came with two months free and an extra 1000 pages free. We would spend way more to fill our old printer with ink so this will be way less expensive annually. I do not know if the color printing will be great for presentation type purposes-other reviewers say not great for that but that is not our primary purpose. You usually get what you pay for and who knows, in a month maybe I will view things differently. But for ease of set-up, attach to network and printing wirelessly, it seems to be an amazing machine for the value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Difficult setup. It was impossible for me to set up the printer, necessitating a service call from the Geek Squad. Then it necessitated a second follow up call when you sent out a firmware update notice. I am not a techie, so am very disappointed in this printer.

When I got it home, it turned out to be very frustrating for me to install and set up to my home computer. (I admit I in the lower percentiles of adept technological users.) I tried the Brother help center and was on-hold for about 30 minutes each time. I was disconnected by three different helpers, all of whom started out trying to be genuinely helpful.. None called me nor tried to reconnect with me. An example of difficulties: I was trying to enter a code on the back of the printer. Even the illustration in the printed directions was overwhelming to look at. Maybe Brother makes and sells a bask printer, scanner.If so it was not available at the Staples store nearest me. I am sure that Brother has an excellent reputation. For me that reputation did not translate into a rewarding experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome printer. I bought this printer to replace an 8 year old Brother, MFC-J-650. The setup and use is very easy. It copies and prints very fast, and two sided printing is a great feature. Scans can be done from the control panel on the printer, or the Brother App on the computer desktop. I prefer to scan documents from the desktop app because it is easier to select the location where I want the scanned document to go. I am very pleased with the way the printer performs. It is quiet when printing. The control panel is easy to use, and the touchscreen prompts you through each step. This is an awesome printer. I signed up for the refresh ink program. I pay a little each month, and ink is sent to me automatically when I need it. It is economical, and there is no running to the store to look for ink. I do not need the FAX function, so I can't comment on that.

Brother has been out of black ink for 30 days which makes this printer totally useless. I called and spoke with customer service, who did nothing, and when I asked for a supervisor I got cut off. I was sent an email saying someone would contact me, that never happened. Very poor service from a company that should know how to treat customers

We all were told that the computer was going to do away with the need for paper copies. They were wrong. If you need a printer and don't do a high volume of print jobs, this is a printer for you. They simply walked me through the same steps I already walked through online and then put me on hold indefinitely when they ran out of options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works like a Dream Printer. MFC-J1010DW Printer: I am totally satisfied! I use this printer nearly everyday. Perfect for me. I had my WiFi on, and was connected to the internet with my Bluetooth turned on. I followed the instructions for setup, using the little screen on the printer, and followed the instructions explicitly. It connected my laptop to the printer automatically. I loaded the paper tray and closed it, and the printer worked perfectly. First time out. When it turns itself off (like overnight), and then, when I need to print something, I just make sure that I'm connected to my WiFi/internet and click print. The printer automatically turns itself back on, and prints the job I sent to it! Awesome! Most of my printing is just Word documents, so after a few days I checked the ink, using the status monitor. The colors were being used to print my Black & White docs, so I went into the settings, and changed the setting to GrayScale (I reverse the setting if I need the color), and now I use more Black ink than I do the color inks. The Black ink is cheaper to buy. I also print mostly in Eco mode. When I want an especially classy hardcopy, I switch back to Standard (or better). Works for me. I love this printer. My wife made a dust-cover for it out of some good fabric (I live in dry, dusty, west Texas), and it fits just loosly enough so that I just raise the cover up off the front of the printer, pull out the paper support, and click Print. It turns itself on and does its job. Perfect! All these reports of Brother printers using too much ink --- Well, this one doesn't use ink nearly as fast as my old Canon printer used it. I am happier than a pig in a slop bucket! I recommend this printer.

Setup is not difficult. iPrint and Scan software is helpful and easy to use (more convenient than using the panel functions). Good wireless interface. Print quality is good for my needs, but I'm not printing high quality photos. There is no printer "door", so the paper catcher has to be deployed each time you print and it seems too flimsy to leave extended. Black and white prints quickly, but color is considerably slower. There is no rear paper feeder, only the front cassette, so if you frequently change paper types it would be inconvenient. It's noisy, but not much more so than my old Canon. I knew I was buying a basic multi-printer and this is what I expected. It works very well for my needs.

The required cartridge is out of stock on the Brother site, Amazon and at all office supply stores! Why is this printer still being sold?? I can by off brand compatible cartridges and void my warranty or wait an unknown period of time an hope Brother stocks these again? Ridiculous!

The "free bonus" for signing up for the auto renew program for print cartridges is not explained clearly enough. The troubleshooting guide in the online manual is confusing in spots.

Set up is easy and the process for printing anything from simple text to color photos is intuitive as well. I've used it to print double-sided 5.5 x 8.5 booklets and they've come out perfectly too: no jams, errors or any other issues. For the price, I couldn't ask for more.

Contacted support, was told two new cartridges would be sent out. This was late Jan/early Feb, and it's now March 17. Perhaps it's still out of stock? Even if the cartridges worked fine the first time, if I can't readily reorder ink and no one else makes compatible ink, this printer is not going to work for me. I wish I could return it.

Only real complaints are that it will not print 6 3/4 envelopes and printing #10 letter sized envelopes is a real pain. Printer needs an envelope bypass slot to be more convenient.

One thing I hate is the control panel is not lit, sonething you do not realize when in the store purchasing. I have to use a flashlight to view the buttons where I have the printer stored. I do like the ability to rotate the control panel but what good is that when you cannot see the buttons. I would not buy this unit again.

It replaces an Hewlitt Packard Envy. I have had bad luck with Hewlitt Packard printers - 3 in a 5 year span and decided to go with this Brother after the last one went caput. The printer quality on my new inexpensive Brother far exceeds the Hewlitt Packard printers that I have owned. So far very pleased.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Photo scanning is bad, documents fine The unit is functional, prints fine and is fairly quiet. Did not set up or plan to use the Fax function. The wireless works well even with using the usb connection with my desktop. The down side, Brother customer support is not very good. Be aware the scan function cannot scan and separate photos. Unlike other scanners that allow one to scan multiple photos at a time and save as individual jpegs, this one will not. After several emails, a failure of their tech support to call at a scheduled two hour window and later after a 40 minute wait and then a 45 minute on phone conversation with their tech support, I was told "Oh, it can only scan one photo at a time." This after clearly stating I wanted to scan multiple photos and save individually. And on top of that if you scan say a 4x6 photo, it saves the whole scanned bed, so you would then have to crop away all the white on whatever software one might have on your pc or laptop to get your picture saved correctly. So if you just need a printer and maybe to scan documents, it's usable, but if you are planning on using it to scan your photos, find a different scanner.

Other than that, it is totally functional, and will work for me, since I have another faster laser printer that I can use for any big jobs.

It's easy to set up and the print quality is above average. It is not the least expensive printer on the market, but having tried those bottom of the barrel printers, this one more than earns it's price. The cons: Needing to buy 4 ink cartridges is pricey and they are sometimes hard to find, so if you do a lot of printing this might not be a good fit for you. As a nontech type person, I ran into a problem when I decided to unplug my printer and move it to another electric outlet and getting it synched with my laptop. I had trouble trying to find info on how to solve that and finally had to remove all the software and start from scratch. Other than those issues...I'm very happy with this machine.

Have a wireless network to Iphone and I pad seems to work fine though required a tech I have a W7 desktop and it will print but can't use the scan function,won't make the printer dominant. the w7 is hard wired to the router It does about 95% of what I need. Luckily am retired so don't use in a business setting

Happy and hope it last awhile. Did take a few trys to hook with WIFI but finally worked..just follow directions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Needs help with firmware bug This printer is exactly like the older MFC-J491-DW I’ve have had for a few years except in three ways. There is a bug in the software and that causes the printer to go back to a setup mode screen that locks everything up and unusable until it is good and ready to reset itself. It also uses a printer cartridge that is identical in appearance to the older printer but is not interchangeable. Black ink cartridges are very difficult to buy but I solved that by subscribing to the ink replacement program so now it is my preferred printer because I’ve prepaid for a years supply of ink.

It works totally fine for basic home use like kid's homework and occasional government forms. Print quality is good. Speed is rather slow, and the paper tray doesn't hold much so don't plan on using it for high volume jobs. Ink cartridges are kind of expensive which is typical for most inkjet printers. The scanner software works fine and produces legible PDFs. One annoying thing is that you still have to manually set the clock, like a VCR from 30 years ago. It's 2023 guys, at least make it set the time automatically from the Internet like every other modern consumer device.

Being a senior citizen and elderly, it’s very difficult to understand how to use a printer to the fullest extent without having a manual right in front to read and learn from. Printing out the manual uses a lot of ink and paper. There’s no excuse as to why a manufacturer cannot include a manual along with the product. Other than that, the printer does a good job of printing both in color or black.

The reason for a low rating is that I cannot find Brother ink cartridges for it anywhere, including on the Brother website. I am forced to purchase generic cartridges, which the printer points out, but what choice do I have? So to sum it up, it's a fine all-in-one device, but poorly supported by its manufacturer because of the manufacturer's inability to supply OEM ink cartridges.

The laser printer has been a reliable mainstay for years, and I expect the inkjet to be equally reliable. It's got all the features one could ask for at a very reasonable price. It was easy to set up and use, and output is certainly acceptable. I don't print an excessive amount, so I don't expect ink cost to be a major consideration for me.

The printing process begins a little noisy with the paper feed, but the quality of color & b/w print is very good. Duplex print process works very well. Have not used the scan feature yet and did not hook up th FAX option. I did sign up for the re-ink supply program and was impressed with how the usage is monitored and how quickly new ink supplies are sent. The Brothers' re-ink supply system actually saves me money and adds convenience compared to the HP and other systems.

The scanner was one of the reasons I bought it. I am highly disappointed in that feature, as far as I'm concerned you might as well left it off pretty much useless for photo scanning. Unless I got a bad one, which I can only compare to other makers like HP and Canon,

I love that I can print photos, make copies, letters and other items for my small home business and send a fax which is a plus plus for me. It was easy to assemble, has a mobile app and I connected it to my WIFI. This machine is compact but it gets the job done whether you're using it for your business or personal use.

Other issues: WiFi can never tell its online (been through all the help, forums and cust svc); printer pops up stupid ink, firmware and marketing messages daily that you have to physically clear to print or enter some arcane password. The user experience is as bad as the Brother website (that has taken over 25 minutes to fill out this stupid form because it just stops responding). I used to love Brother. Those days are over.

Only ding would be initial setup for firmware update - printer has a tiny password sticker on extreme back of printer which wasn’t obvious until I searched on web. Have to use password each time firmware updates so wrote it on Post-it note and stuck to front.

The brand maker wanted too much input in it's operation and finally the printer stopped operating no matter what I did. So I decided to try a Brother printer. It was very easy to setup, the ink is a lot cheaper and I haven't had a single issue or problem with it. I will be sticking with Brother products for now on! Very impressed.

The printer was extremely easy to set up and load to all of my computers. The printing quality is top-notch and quick too. My old printer was somewhat loud, but this one is super quiet and doesn’t take too long to start printing. I couldn’t be more pleased with this product. Plus, the ink isn’t too expensive either!

As with most multi function ink cartridge machines, the brother ink is pricey, but that is a complaint I have with all manufactures. I settled on brother printers after having reliability problems with other manufacturers. We still have our first Brother and it's been operating for 5 years with no problems. The brother machines just keep on running with very little intervention on my part. That's their strong suit reliability with no frills, bells, whistles and low frustration for the user.

The set up process was super easy to do. I love the little screen on the printer. I think it's extremely easy to use and makes high quality prints. It looks complicated but I can say it was pretty easy setting up and didn't take too long. The ink cartridges is different than other printers I've used before but also was easy figuring out, there is ink included with the printer. You can also fax on this but I can honestly say I have not used that part. Scans and prints fabulously! The display is nice! Nice sized with nice light. I think it's a pretty good printer that's a step up above your average one.

Love that you can purchase only the ink you need and not the whole cartridge. That makes more sense and more cost effective. It prints faster than my old printer (not a Brother) and was easy to connect to direct wi fi printing. I don't regret the purchase and for the price, can't be beat in my opinion. I've paid way more for other printers. Time will tell how it holds up, but so far so good.

I had bad experiences in the past, particularly my last printer. This was quick and easy to set up, I like the ink plans. The plan allowed me to upgrade from my initial selection when I had exceeded the page allotment. I would’ve given 5 stars but finding a black and white only selection in the printing screen on my computer is eluding me, therefore when printing images from the internet I only need in black and white or manipulated into an outline (I’m a stained glass artist the printer takes far too long printing as if the image were a photo. I’m still trying to work it out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic printer! This printer is fantastic, it does everything you need like wireless printing, copying, scanning, and faxing using your computer, tablet or phone. Which is an option I never had before in a printer. It even has a convenient top try to hold excess paper. It has a nice set of useful features. There’s even a brother app to download on you phone to keep track of the device that lets you know if there are any trouble shooting issues or if you are low on ink and paper. Setup was fairly easy not to complicated. I followed the getting started booklet that also included an app for an easy setup. The only thing that was a little complicated for me was setting up the WiFi, but it was not the printer’s fault. I was having issues with my internet router, but I managed to figure it out in a reasonable manor. The touchscreen is easy to read and filling up the ink cartridges are simple. I’ve had no issues whatsoever since my initial use with the printer. I love it, it does everything I need efficiently and effectively. That also has excellent fast printing quality. It is a great all around printer and I would highly recommend you consider getting one for yourself.

But after reading reviews and comparing several options I quickly brought Brother into the selection process. The printer is super FAST and the set up is fairly easy - there's a little bit of work to use WiFi as the printer needs to be on the same router as your WiFi. The output is crisp and clean and the color is vibrant and detailed. If you're looking for a new all-in-one, consider this printer.

That brand's quality had dropped substantially, so I thought I would give Brother a try. I was very pleasantly surprised. Ease of use and quality of printing, scanning, copying have me sold on Brother products. My only complaint is it was a tad difficult to set up. I had to get help. It was definitely worth it!

Consumer Reports profiled positively a companion printer so I assumed since they seemed so similar, this one would be great too - and it is. Printing is first rate with good speed. Haven't done a photo yet but I assume that will do well. Have done scanning to computer and that also has worked. Haven't had occasion yet to fax but happy to have the ability to do so. Directions fine. You can download manual to your computer and find what you want very easily by just clicking the page needed.

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and my HP printer would no longer scan to my laptop. After hours of trying to get help from HP and re-installing the printer and updating drivers, it still didn't work. I have a Brother FC-J491DW at work and absolutely love it. So bought the F-J1010DW for home. Set up was fast and simple and the quality of the print and scan is excellent. Highly recommend this device!

This printer is finally the last one we will need!! Very simple to install and easy to use. The quality of the prints is phenomenal and noticeably better than anything we’ve had before. I also really like the sleek design of this printer and don’t think of it as an eye sore or something that needs to be hidden. If you are frustrated with never having just the right printer, give this one a try!

With supply chain issues, there are no printers on display so you can't visually see if the product will work for you. Have to rely on product specs, which in this case are incorrect. So wasted time and gas for the 20 mile round trip to to get a product that I'll have to return. Never owned a Brother product before. Guess what, never will.

It requires a password to do this. I can't remember the password. Went online to try and figure out if I could find it or reset it but that didn't work. It then wouldn't let me use it because it was wanting a password for the upgrade. So useless. Why would you need a password to upgrade the firmware?

It actually setup on my phone faster than the laptop. Love that I can print double sided even right from my cellphone documents. Haven't used the fax or scan function yet but they will get used. Speed, this unit is far faster and quieter than my previous unit. Only knock was it could have been a bit more "plug and play". I had no problems with the install, but I could see that many would be speed dialing tech support to get this installed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Choice! Bought the MFC-J1010DW direct from Brother, and based on my experience the first two months it looks like I made a great decision! Based on my past experience with Brother consumer/small business MFC's I was expecting it to be a good machine, but it has really exceeded those expectations! Really fast, with impressive print quality -- frankly even better than my old Brothers, which were good but definitely surpassed by the crisp MFC-J1010DW printouts. Scanning works well. This is a solidly built, easy to use printer. I haven't tried Mobile Connect, as it works fine with my iPhone's Air Print, as well as the Brother iPrint & Scan App on a family member's Android -- and I don't need the cloud-print features (but I know many people will find them useful. The only nitpick I have is that the LED and some of the controls are on the small side, but the fact that the control panel can be tilted upward (tightly snapping into that position) makes that nitpick even less of an issue. Easy to setup with the included quick start guide. Comes with standard size cartridges of black ink and each of the 3 colors, which are easy to snap into the machine. While I don't think it's mentioned in the full user's manual (online pdf), I've found that -- when I can accept just-slightly lighter printing -- I can save ink by changing a print job's print Quality from Standard to "Eco Mode" in the Print Preferences Dialog (Windows). Really happy with this machine after almost two months, and have no reason to expect that to change!

Now, whether this is my machine's issue or the internet service, I don't know. Except my last brother multi function machine never had that issue. Another issue is the paper tray paper catcher doesn't always catch the printed paper. Otherwise this printer works well, quiet and fast. I would recommend it as this may be just my bad luck.

I came across this brother printer and decided to purchase it. That was the best decision I made for my business. This printer is absolutely amazing. It is so easy to use you can control everything with the printer from your phone which makes everything so much easier and faster. Sometimes I do not have time to sit down and get on my laptop to do everything I need to use my phone and carry it around to get test completed and it helps to be able to type what I need into my phone and the printer delivers what I’m asking for. The one thing that I am very happy about with this printer is how amazing the quality and detailing on everything I print. Everything that I print with this printer comes out absolutely amazing where it looks like real live photo shoot taken with your camera professional quality. Part of my business is printing pictures off in creating pendant for customers with customized necklaces. The quality of the pictures is absolutely perfect. I really like that this is all in one printer. The printer allows you to mobile print, it allows you to double side print which is a major plus and the ISO print speed is up to 17 ppm black and up to 9.5 ppm color. I print so many shipping labels from home that I needed a printer that could keep up with printing nonstop all day long and this printer has been amazing. The printer holds 150 sheets of paper up to legal size paper. You can print wireless from your desktop, laptop, smart phone or tablet. This printer also to helps you save time allowing you to multi page copying and scanning via up to 20 sheets with the automatic document feeder. The printer is compatible with windows and with Mac which will allow you to use the printer with different devices with no problem. The printer has been very simple to use I didn’t even need to pull the directions out to figure out how to work majority of this printer. this printer has absolutely been a game changer I am beyond happy with my product I highly recommend it you will not be disappointed. I recommend it for business use or home use. My son has use the printer to print out anime pictures for him to hang in his bedroom and they look like they were professional posters. The quality is absolutely amazing with this printer technology has come so far and once again brother has done an amazing job with another great product.

We print menus for our small restaurant, averaging about 5 black and white pages a day. If black ink runs out, we are screwed for the day. Unlike other printers, you can't by-pass it and print in another color. We decided to sign up for the ink subscription to save on the cost of ink but had technical difficulties that have taken several calls and a few weeks with tech support to resolve. To date, we are still working on resolving it but thinking of just ditching the machine altogether. We've invested way too much time and ink. It's too late to return it. If you're using this to print a few pages a month and don't plan on printing full color pages (visible print lines), you will be good to go. Don't buy it for school unless you have back-up cartridges. Inevitably, you will run out of ink when you need it the most (10 page mid-term due the next day). Definitely don't buy it for your business, small or large. Also, didn't it say it has capability to print remotely? Tech support says they don't support it.

This printer seemed to check all the boxes so I bought it. It wasn't hard to set up and works great for what I need; but, finding replacement ink cartridges is a HUGE pain. The only places I have found to get the LC401xx ink are from the Brother website or Amazon. I don't mind ordering the ink; but, it's a problem when I can't just run to the store and get some if I need it. I am not sure why this ink is not carried anywhere; but, "availability of ink" is something I will add to my list of things to check the next time I buy a printer.

It prints in color, FASTER, and double-sided! As a teacher I’ve cut my time and costs. The refill cartridges last long and aren’t too expensive. They’re affordable to keep a backup around.

I have had this printer for about 7 months and have had the hardest time finding Ink refills for it. I am currently out of Black ink for the 3rd time and can not find Ink for this printer anywhere on planet earth. Go ahead give it a try LC401 you won't find it. I contacted support a couple weeks back and they couldn't give me a time frame to when the cartridges would be available again if ever. Nor did they offer any kind of new product for my trouble.

The Brother App that allows you to SCAN doesn't work. I've downloaded all the drivers and nothing. I've spent time with Tech Support but again, nothing. I forget exactly how long because it just keeps on printing. I recently purchased a Brother ink jet to do color. Was disappointed that a separate phone app was required. I wanted to stay in the Brother family for consistency and ease but I guess that isn't important to Brother.

The connection is unpredictable so it's impossible to print necessary document often. The Cartridges are advertised with the ability to print 200 pages which does not appear to be the case. The Black has lasted for about 50 pages and the color cartridges are almost depleted as well. The Black ink cartridges have not been available since early 2023. Brother should buy these devices back!!

Brother Customer Service has not offered any work arounds, such as enable Blue ink for black. I am so angry that I got to discover this problem after the store returns period passed. SO I had the original black cartridge ink and can get no more. As Charlie Brown would say "I got a rock."

I finally got it open but then it would not go all the way in without turning the whole printer upside down. Now it won't open again.

Prints well, prints quickly, a little noisy and changing ink cartridges is simple....if it continues to perform this well in the coming months/years my rating will surely increase to a 5.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Color printing is slow A decent unit overall. Black printing is fast. Color printing is very slow. This printer would not pair with my Wi-Fi. Needed to use a USB cable. The little screen on this unit is very little. The screen is therefore hard to read. Print quality is good. Scanning works well also. I really like the front loading of paper. No paper jams so far.

Only thing I wish was different is that it had mobile fax instead of the hard fax line. Noone has a home telephone to use it anymore.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Decent printer. Decent paper handling and printing clarity and speed. Could use a bigger paper tray and duplex document feed. Definitely needs an upgrade to the install documentation for the case where one has a single router home wifi network where the printer is connected to the router (wirelessly) and the computers are also connected to the network (wirelessly). Once it works, it works well. The ink subscription plan is not explained well and is hard to order. As best as I can tell, it is a "pay by page" lease plan where brother sends you ink based on your usage level for some # of $ / mo. Ink is expensive, but the printer is not.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Two-sided printing for Macs I used the printer at home where there are three computers, two windows PCs and one Mac. I set the printer up to be accessed by wi-fi. The windows PCs have no problem installing drivers but the Mac could not install the proper drivers. With generic drivers, they print two-sided by default.The Mac prints labels 80% of the time so two-sided printing becomes a problem. After spending a couple of hours trying to get the right drivers installed with no resolution, I decided to return the printer. I had no issues with the windows PCS but since the Mac is used by my girlfriend I wanted to make things as simple as possible for her and I envisioned more issues down the road without having the proper drivers installed. I liked everything about the setup of the printer, its size and form factor, but I found the buttons on the printer confusing. I expected simplicity with making it accessible to the Wi-Fi network but it was tricky. Had I intended to keep the printer I would have taken the next step in going through the user manual to figure it out but I stopped there. Interestingly enough, I was searching a wedding registry for a gift and found this exact make and model on their registry. The box was fragile and so I didn't send it to them because I wanted it to look pristine. I hope this review is useful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional Printer at an Incredible Price!! This is an exceptional printer at an incredible price!!! This printer is a powerhouse in such a small compact package. I was a little skeptical it could do all I needed it to because of the small size and low price. I got really tired of my old printer never working right. It was also a very big unit and the ink was ridiculously expensive and it ran out way too soon. The print quality of my Brother MFC-J1010DW is truly impressive. I currently have it hooked up 2 different ways at the same time. I have it hard wired to my work computer vis USB and wirelessly to my home desktop and it works seemlessly. As soon as you hit print it takes at most 2 seconds to start the print job. It does a great job of doing double sided printing as well and the colors come out great! The document feeder also works surprisingly well. The software and ease of use of the printer and software are awesome! The ink lasts a very long time and the replacement ink prices are very reasonable especially for how long they last. I could not be more pleased with this printer and wish I would have purchased one many years ago. It would have saved me tons of headaches and tons of money!! Thanks for an outstanding product!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice printer We bought this to replace a different printer which never worked via wifi. We were constantly unplugging to re boot. Installating this printer was not fast and a bit frustrating at times. Forget the paper instructions and use the online tutorial(s). You will need to buy a specific USB cable. You may need to download updates and drivers for windows 11. Linking to our Androids was extremely easy. I'm still working on getting it to print whilst I'm away from my own wifi. It's probably not hard to do-and not a real priority at this time. That said, when first using the printer with the Android/pc/laptop all three brought up the previous printer. I had to set them to recognize the Brother, not the "Brother USB". Not hard to do. It is reasonably priced, reasonably fast and the quality is very good. 4x6 photos are very "good" though I've not enlarged one to 8x10 yet. I've printed 100 plus B&W and at least a dozen colour with the ink levels barely having moved. Buy the xl cartridges right away though. ALL printers like ink! So overall we are most pleased with this printer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DON'T BUY i received this from the V.A. after my other printer(an HP) went outi do a lot of pictures sometimes, and make a lot of copies. on the printing, i give them about 3 stars. you have to print on normal or best to get a good readable print. don't bother with draft. it is quick, but only on printing documents. printing with color is a whole other story. when printing pictures in the best color format with borderless selected, it takes between 4.5-5 minutes per 5x7 to print. so if you have a lot to print, plan on an all day event. the quality of the prints on the best quality is part of where the 2 star grade comes in. the best pictures, stink. sorry brothers, it does. the other reason for the 2 star is the brothers version of h.p.'s insta ink. hopefully it is a great thing. but you almost have to have a college degree just to sign up for it. it is not blind, or low vision friendly. i had to call their tech support, and was on the phone well over an hour trying to make it ready to buy their ink replacement. there was no excuse for it. i even considered going to the store to buy me another h.p, or something else.

The only thing I don’t like is updating the firmware. Need a pass word and the 1 that came which printer does not work.

I contacted Brothers but the rep never got me the help I needed. I finally called my neighbor; she came and solved my problem.

You will! be sorry, unless you speak Chinese, Japanese, Greek, French or "G E E K" The operating instructions and steps are impossible to even just make a copy. It can't be like other machines where you just press copy and you magically get your copy. No with this machine you need to push start, stop, print, next, back, up, down, copy, right arrow, clear, left arrow, Black, left arrow, and three days later you MIGHT get a copy or you MIGHT NOT GET A COPY. So after a week you might have to go to a copy center. I highly recommend this machine if you are made at your wife, boss, children, IRS, Or even your next door neighbor On a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate the .operating instructions at ,----Minus 36

It fits nicely on the slide-out shelf of my computer desk. The only negative is that it jams with any kind of label or slightly heavier paper in both the sheet feeder for scanning and the paper tray for printing. It is handy for plain paper printing and scanning, but not for photographic quality or card stock. Very affordable.

Also like ease of two-sided printing - no need to place first sheet back in tray to print second side of two-sided document. Very fast black and white document printing. No connectivity issues with Wi-Fi, and easy to set up. Brother software seems very intuitive. Ink consumption reasonable for basic home use, and replacement (individual) cartridges seem relatively inexpensive. Machine seems well built. Only minor negative is that dimensions of unit a bit large, and printer is pretty heavy - barely fits on my slide out desk shelf. Nonetheless, think its a great value for the price.

I have been extremely pleased with the quality of the printing, the power-saving feature and the small footprint. The paper tray is a smaller capacity than before but is easy to load as needed.

You must purchase ONLY Brother ink cartridges, no refilling or aftermarket supplies will work. I sent the printer back and purchased something else.

It could print color photos a lot faster, but that's somewhat to be expected. It prints them about as fast as advertised. Although the only frustrating thing is that when you're printing color anything, you just FLY through the color ink, so I recommend signing up for the EZ Refresh subscription option and asking them to send two color ink cartridges at a time, or buying the XL size ink cartridges. Aside from these hiccups, we love this printer! It really is a great printer overall. It has great features that it offers. It is truly everything that we need. It's a multi-function printer, and it offers so many functions all in one. So the small hiccups that we mentioned are the ONLY hiccups that we have found. Every single thing else in this entire printer works phenomenally, and believe me, we have been putting it to the test for a while now. We've used just about every single feature and tested just about every single thing out, and everything works great! We're highly impressed with everything this printer has to offer. From a business standpoint, that's saying a lot, considering we put our printer to use quite a bit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brother MFC-J1010DW hard to find ink Brother printer MFC-J101DW is a good home printer for the money. Have had no problems with it in the 6 months since i have owned it. It prints black and white copies at ok speed but color prints are a little slow. The biggest problem i have is trying to find LC401 ink cartridges for it. Brothers website shows all Lc401 ink cartridges out of stock. would definitely wood check for ink availability before purchasing again.

The one problem I have is the difficulty in sinking or using the it with the blue tooth option, which is one of the reasons I purchased this item. I'm not the tech type. At 55 I am more old school without computer skills.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No Ink available for 6 months Absolute trash company. This was my first Brother product, MFC-J1010DW printer, and will be my last. No black ink available at all anywhere. I wish there was a way to return this printer and get my money back, but I didn't find out about the lack of ink until it was too late. This company just took my money and ran. They will respond to this post about how they care about customer satisfaction, and that they are working hard to get the ink back in stock, but its been about 6 months now with no ink. Hopefully this company goes out of business.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good basic home printer Overall, this is a good printer. The clarity of print is good, and the quality of both the black and color printing is good. The controls for the various functions are somewhat more complicated than what I am used to, especially for a simply home printer. A lot of seemingly unnecessary steps are often required, which can be challenging to figure out. This printer is poor when it comes to printing envelopes. The paper has to be removed from the tray, and then the paper guides readjusted for the envelope. Because of the sharp turn of the paper path at the back of the printer, envelopes often jam when forced to bend sharply during the printing process. A separate feeder for envelopes would eliminate this chronic problem.

For the price and ease of use, I really liked this little printer when I first got it - it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of my bigger ones, but it's also a fraction of the price. However, after a few months, it's now been rendered useless, as there are no black ink replacement cartridges available anywhere and even Brother customer service has stopped responding to questions and reviews on this site - this just tells me that there are is no imminent solution to this problem! Disappointing, as it's a handy little printer, but not worth it to just have it collect dust!

Their aftermarket coverage of something as simple as a black ink cartridge really sucks. I have come to find out this shortage has existed for several months and many users are being affected by the lack of support for cartridges. I purchased the printer about two months ago and cannot buy cartridges for it because of the issues. I have also been told that generic cartridges may not work because of imbedded chips. This really is disappointing and has led me to buy another printed for home use (obviously not another Brothers item). Very unhappy with my purchasing this printer and I am pretty sure Brothers has seen the last of my business and, hopefully, the business of anyone reading this review. I gave it a two star only because it delivers fine copy when it has ink.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Black Ink is not available without a subscription The printer itself is good, but you cannot buy black ink refills since Brother has restricted the distribution to the normal market (for example ...Staples, Amazon, and Walmart). The only way to get ink is to sign up for a subscription plan where Brother will sell the ink but you have to guess how many pages you will print. If you guess too low, the penalty is severe ... its sort of the same plan cell phones had when they first came out. This printer is no bargain with the inability to buy ink and I am so disappointed in Brother ...

The way the usb cord comes out of the inside of the printer makes for a very short cord. Then 4 weeks ago I couldn’t find black ink anywhere. I fianally ordered a pack with all colors just to get the black. Finally about a week later Brother notified me they had black back in stock. I never had this problem with my HP printers. Being out of ink is a major issue.

MY former printer (another brand) allowed me to see the paper, so I could put more in when necessary. The other thing I don't like is that right now, I can't get any more ink!! I got this printer 3 months ago & everywhere says the needed ink is "out of stock". other than those things, I do like the printer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good printer Pros: Quiet printer (much quieter than the Cannon and HP printers I previously had), Good pages/minute print rate (faster than prior printers), Easy to replace cartridges, Automatic self cleaning, Good print quality (both document and photo), Good scanning resolution, Good copy operation (single and multi-page), Power Saving Standby ready operation (don't need to turn on printer or turn it off, assuming no power glitches), WIFI operation is nice (only power cord, and can send prints from smartphone, and any WIFI device) Cons: Seems like average cost/page for ink cartridges but need to analyze this more, Don't believe it allows printing in black and white only if color cartridges are empty (need to have non empty color cartridges in there otherwise it says it could damage the printer)

If I want to change paper size, or print envelopes, I must remove the standard copy paper and adjust the feeder tray for the desired paper. My Canon model had a second feeder that I used mostly for envelopes.

My only complaint is the onerous process for updating its firmware. It requires entering a password on its tiny keyboard, and typically it takes several attempts before it recognizes the password, no matter how carefully you enter it. I hope they fix this!

When I registered this printer found out that the old one was 14 years old. So far so good, I’m sure I will continue to be pleased with my new printer.

I had an HP that had no issues for years, but this one is an idiot. I will need to replace it because the support chat I was on, basically said I was an idiot for not being able to understand the issues. I've had this one for 6-weeks. Ridiculous.

Even though it's what I have it set to, once I hit the scan button and start it reverts to a full page scan. I have to stop it set it to default and redo it for it to adjust to auto size. Could be something I'm doing, don't know For I also keep getting a connection loss warning when it's connected.

And Brother just hasn't sent it. My case keeps getting escalated with no resolve. I am giving it one more week than just returning it since I can't even use it. It feels like cheap plastic and I don't have much confidence in it anyway.

I've searched all through the Brother site and reached out on chat, but haven't received sufficient customer help. It works fine on older MAC operating systems, and the specs state that it it's compatible with Mac OS 10. I've installed the drivers, and uninstalled them, but can't cannot at all! Wish I knew this before purchasing.

I already owned a Brother HL-2140, and wanted a Brother Printer, Scanner, Copier, with affordable ink cartridges, and the HL-L2325DW seemed to meet my needs. It has not been a disappointment, easily installing on my home WiFi, delivering crisp color copies directed from my desktop, laptop, or phone, with ink cartridges considerably more affordable than the HP it replaced.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from this machine has exceeded my expectations I replaced an aging and ink guzzling HP printer with this Work Smart Series Brother printer. Although both machines are at the same relative price point, the Brother printer has more functionality for my needs and (so far) is much more economical to run. Setting up the machine wasn't too taxing and I've managed to print several documents directly from my smart phone, which has turned out to be a real time saver. The print quality and speed are both more than adequate. All in all, this machine has exceeded my expectations. My only concern is that the bracket onto which the printed sheet is delivered, while being a clever little piece of engineering, is not particularly robust.

Scanner seems a bit slow but is quite good does a great job. The only complaint is I'm not sure how to get the scanner to automatically read multiple documents. I have to do one at a time.

Well this filled the bill. It's a color inkjet & scanner all in one. It comes with starter cartridges that are pretty respectable as far as page count compared to other brands.Has WiFi & Automatic Duplex.. As with my laser the software was a little buggy but i got through it. I would recommend this printer to anyone that needs a low cost color printer who doesn't do a lot of color printing like would be in an office.

The new printer was easy to set up, easy to operate. I have not tried wireless. I only use it for home use. It prints plenty fast. Some noise but not noisy. Control panel easy to understand. I did not know the control panel was adjustable, what a game changer that was! I never saw anything about that in the instructions or on the box. I have had the printer for about one month, so far, so good. I am very satisfied with my purchase and do recommend this printer. Thank you Brother.

I have some complaints. I have to use my hp printer to print addresses on envelopes. The Brother printer does not position the address where it should be. It is inconvenient to enter the password when an update is needed. Why not just download and instll the update? Document pages are not colated. The first page is printed first and apppears as the last page.

It is a joy! Paired immediately with my PC. Prints photos from my phone in brilliant, accurate colors. I love it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brother Model MFC-J1010DW Have used the MFC-J1010DW printer for a month and it works okay most of the time. Sometimes it will pick up two pieces of paper to print rather than one but the most upsetting thing this printer does do is print the date ,etc. at the top and bottom of each page, but will not print the information it is supposed to print. It leaves the middle of the page blank. It also does not hold much paper in the tray.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just One Issue... This printer is a big improvement over my old Canon model. It prints quickly and efficiently. My only complaint is that it has only one feeder. If I want to change paper size, or print envelopes, I must remove the standard copy paper and adjust the feeder tray for the desired paper. My Canon model had a second feeder that I used mostly for envelopes.

And it has been ACouple months so can’t return the ink. . I am wondering did I buy a old model? .??? Hate to spend more money on more ink, what if they don’t fit???

That’s the only tiny complaint that I can find so far with this printer. I very rarely use my printer. Surprise was important. The price was very competitive on this product. It was one of the least expensive, but it works very well. I would recommend it.

The reason that i took points off was for following reasons This is an all-in-one printer, but it doesn't have a slot for 4x6 photo paper. the second point was deducted because only sometimes that paper has a tendency to jam up

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great multipurpose printer at an outstanding price My HP printer finally died and I bought a new, updated HP but after going to Microcenter, I decided to buy the MFC-J1010DW and did a comparison of out and usage of both printers. The HP did slightly better in color print quality but not enough to justify the different in price. As I continued to use the Brother printer, I became more and more impressed and I am very pleased with my decision.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Software is SALES oriented The printer hardware works well; the software seems to be very sales oriented, insisting that ink MUST be replaced in order for the copy function to work. A printed page from the computer worked just fine, colors as expected. As someone on Social Security as our only income, discarding something before it is TRULY used up is anathema. Replacement of ink cartridges should be at the owners' discretion, as when print quality suffers ... NOT when estimated ink levels get low. The software prevented me from making a copy of an outgoing payment until ink cartridges DEEMED low were replaced. EVERY button on the printer just beeped at me, having no effect ... even the POWER button refused to work, with a message such as "Busy, try again later"!

I purchased this to print directly from my phone but I didn’t know it was gonna take 5 minutes to print 1 simple paper. At first it was working fine but after couple use it started printing it so slow. I called Brother customer service but they said there is nothing they can do. It was my first time buying brother products, and LAST !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value for the home or home office I am very pleased with my new MFC-J1010DW all-in-one printer that I bought in early December. I like the new control panel up front instead of on top like most printers. If you print a photo, be prepared to wait a while, but the quality of the printout is amazing. I also noticed that enabling the quiet mode slowed down the printer considerably. It is a little nosier than my previous Brother printer. The 2-sided printing is also a slower process since it has to pull each page back in and flip it to do the second side. If I had many pages, I would probably use the old odd/even page method to speed things along. As for the ink cartridges sometimes being hard to find, I enrolled in the Ink subscription and received a replacement set in about a week. The printer will tell me when to put in a new cartridge. For home use, it is the perfect printer with very good quality output at a reasonable speed. Probably it is not suitable for someone printing a lot of material at once especially 2-sided printing. I love being able to scan and copy documents at home. I used to have to search for a place to make copies that I needed. I don't use the fax function, but it is there if I decide I need it. Setup for my Windows 10 computer was very easy. But setup for my phone took longer as it involved installing apps and was a bit harder to go through. I did manage to get it working without having to call Support.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wireless printer Do not buy this wireless printer.MFC~J1010DW. At first we only had to clear the spooler. You have to go to the web site to do that. Now we have to clear the spoiler almost every time we use it. Plus it keeps defaulting to the fax mode. We never even set up the fax!! So if you want to get frustrated on a regular basis this would be the printer for you. Why did we buy it you ask. Because our daughter has an older model of this printer and it works great for her. And the salesman at Office Depot recommended it.

It was affordable and does not take up much space on my desk. I also like that it is bluetooth so I don't have to take up a port on my computer. The ink is also very easy to install. It does everything I need it too.

I love that I can go to YouTube and find out how to operate certain features. I have scanned single and multiple pages by way of the app. I have printed and copied documents. The only feature I have not used yet is the fax. The price was very reasonable, and it packs a punch. I strongly recommend it. I also recommend joining the Refresh subscription. It is so easy and efficient. Brother tracks the usage, and you receive your refill cartridge.

The paper tray and fold out are a bit flimsy but this is great for home use. Probably would not hold up in an office environment. I would give this 5 stars but the black cartridge is unavailable from anywhere. Not sure what I will do when the black runs out. I’m very hesitant to buy knock offs

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm happy with it. This machine is doing all I need it to do and like it much better than a previous HP I've owned around the same price range. The only reason I'm not giving it a 5-star is because I like to work using it in the quiet of the nights, and the scan is a little noisy when it starting and so I'm afraid it could be waking up my roommate. Other than that, it's a great value for the price. And one more thing, to figure out how to install it, use the video, because I wasn't able to figure it out using the paper instructions. But the video made it really easy because I had certainty that I was doing the right thing and wouldn't break anything.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Decent but not great My printer seems to work fine, however the printing is slower than what I expected. Setup was fairly easy. The scanning software is simple and intuitive. Scan quality is good. Print quality is clean and good.. The paper tray is a little small and the output tray is clumsy and looks to be fragile. One could bump in to it and break it. But with it, the output has nowhere to go buy on the floor. Decent but not great. I give a 3 1/2.

I am glad to have a scanner function, and to be able to print documents from my phone. I can't get updates because it won't take the password, and I can't figure out howl to change it. There is no information about how to deal with paper jams, which happened with the previous printer. Brother help with recycling the old printer would have been appreciated.

Includes the 4 color ink injecto. I can print and scan to popular cloud services. Wireless connectivity. Work with the Btother app and my phone at the same time. Include the USB cable but is always to check because may not work with the equipment you owe.
