Desktop Drives vs. WD Red Plus

Do right by your NAS and choose the drive purpose-built for NAS with an array of features to help preserve your data and maintain optimum performance. Take the following into consideration when choosing a hard drive for your NAS:

Compatibility: Unlike desktop drives, these drives are specifically tested for compatibility with NAS systems for optimum performance.

Reliability: The always-on environment of a NAS or RAID is a hot one, and desktop drives aren't typically designed and tested under those conditions like WD Red Plus drives are.

Error Recovery Controls: WD Red Plus NAS hard drives are specifically designed with RAID error recovery control to help reduce failures within the NAS system.

Noise and Vibration Protection: Designed to operate solo, desktop drives typically offer little or no protection from the noise and vibration present in a multi-drive system. WD Red Plus drives are designed to thrive in multi-bay NAS system environments.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Server Class Drive After losing several WD green drives in a heavy read/write situation, I switched to the Red drive and have had no problems at all. I have 50+ of these in varying sizes in service. I ordered several from another retailer and 3 came DOA. I've never had that problem from CDW. Every drive has been fine. Yes, the Red server class drives are more expensive, but they are worth the little expense in reliability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Using these in QNAP NAS I ordered 8 of these drives for some QNAP NASes and did not have any problems out of them. They are definitely better quality than the Green and Blue WD drives.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Degraded after 13 months I have four of these drives total (two drives in two different NAS). Two of the four degraded at 13 months of use. This specific NAS with the failed drives is only used to backup at night, once a day. They other NAS is used to backup onsite every hour. Very disappointed that they didn't last any longer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I bought 4 of these WD drives I bought 4 of these drives to put in a Buffalo NAS to rebuild a RAID5 brand new and so far everything seems ok. I usually don't buy Western Digital anymore because I have had bad experiences with them going bad really quick but so far they are ok. I will update this in 6 months to tell everyone if any failed yet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good average NAS drive When you don't want to spend too much on higher end, high availibility drives, nor too little on desktop drives, this is a great alternative. Works as expected. Too early to tell reliability on my recent batch. My older batch has been working fine since day 1.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Drive for NAS I recently increased the capacity of our RAID 5 NAS system and installed the WD Red drives. They are much faster than the old drives and have worked flawlessly since the upgrade. It's helpful to have the choice of a drive designed for this purpose in the WD Red product line.
