We commonly use IIS to deploy most of the applications or network services internally or externally. We have to deploy different kinds of applications on IIS to access them externally. IIS makes these applications available to the internal or external end users. What is most valuable? The solution is very simple to use and easy to deploy. Once you deploy your application, it can reach the desired users. Since the solution already came together with the Windows servers, the deployment of our applications is clear and straightforward. What needs improvement? Most of the time, we procure perpetual licenses, and getting support is not easy for us. We didn't face many issues with IIS because of our expertise and the extensive experience we have using the Microsoft Windows service. In most cases, we figured out solutions by ourselves. Sometimes, we encounter difficult issues, and getting support from Microsoft to resolve those issues is not easy. It would be good if IIS could add monitoring features. For how long have I used the solution? I have been using IIS for a long time. What do I think about the stability of the solution? Once it's up and running, IIS is a stable solution. I rate the solution a nine out of ten for stability. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? IIS is a scalable solution. You can add different kinds of services or applications within IIS by separating or using different kinds of ports. More than 2,050 users might be using the solution in our organization. I rate the solution a nine out of ten for scalability. How was the initial setup? The solution’s initial setup is straightforward. What about the implementation team? We implemented the solution through an in-house team. It takes around 15 minutes to deploy the solution. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? Users can get a subscription-based license or a perpetual license for IIS. What other advice do I have? We are hosting web-based applications using IIS. I would recommend IIS to people planning to deploy any kind of application. The solution requires additional protection or security because IIS can't be protected by itself. In terms of performance, the solution stands up perfectly to traffic spikes if your network backbone is good. It's an operating system. If you have a machine to be used as a Microsoft Windows server, you have to deploy it directly. From the security aspect, Microsoft provides patches every three years. Then, you have to patch on the Windows server machine you have. The side effect of Microsoft is that it can be easily penetrated by any kind of cyber attack. Rated 5 out of 5 by from The interface, simplicity, and ease of management lend flexibility to this configurable solution What is our primary use case? We are basically using IIS like people use SharePoint. Technically IIS is a configurable web server. SharePoint is meant to be a collaborative tool. We configured IIS to be a collaborative tool of our own design. What is most valuable? The most valuable parts of IIS are the interface, simplicity, and ease of management. What needs improvement? There are a lot of security issues with IIS, and this has become more of a concern, especially recently. That security problem is the biggest disadvantage. Scalability is also a problem. Microsoft needs to improve on that aspect of the product. There are many limitations on IIS that seem like they should not be hard to remedy. On the other hand, Microsoft is doing more to concentrate on Azure for the cloud solution, so it may be their intent that Azure is ultimately the better solution. For how long have I used the solution? Overall, I have been working with IIS solutions on the cloud and on-premises for eight to ten years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? Recently IIS has been more stable than in earlier releases and it has gotten better as it matured. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? I do not think that much of IIS as a very scalable solution. It is used by our entire organization, which is about 1,000-plus end-users. But the product itself has limitations built into it. We have a maximum of two people who manage the product. We work with it somewhat less now because of the scalability limitations and security issues, so we also dedicate less staff to projects with the product. How are customer service and technical support? The technical support is neutral: not good and not bad. It has become less satisfying because they changed how support is handled and we have to depend on forums. We do not have direct access to Microsoft support, in other words. It is not at all optimal. Microsoft tries to divert from this lack of interest in supporting the product, I think, by providing documentation. We also use the community and go into the forums — the Microsoft TechNet forums — and then use Google as a last resort. For technical support on IIS, it turns out that Google is our best friend. Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch? From the beginning, we have been using Microsoft products as our base solution. We have Unix and Apache and those things in addition in the places where we need them, but we are mainly running on IIS and Windows. How was the initial setup? The initial setup was straightforward. That is one of the biggest advantages for IIS. It takes just three or four clicks and the installation is done. The whole process takes just a few minutes. What other advice do I have? Recent versions, especially IIS 10, are very stable. For the stability I highly recommend IIS. On a scale from one to ten where one is the worst and ten is the best, I would rate IIS as an eight-out-of-ten. Which deployment model are you using for this solution? We use IIS for hosting service, user authentication, and Active Directory integration. What needs improvement? The product could be more compatible with Linux and macOS, particularly when applying user configuration policies. We have to download and configure other player controllers for the same. What do I think about the stability of the solution? The product is stable. We do not encounter any issues from IIS after configuration. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? We have 80-90 IIS users in our organization. We might increase the usage in the future. How was the initial setup? The product is straightforward to configure. However, there could be a component to add a feature for third-party system integration. What other advice do I have? I recommend IIS to others and rate it a ten out of ten. We primarily use the solution for application infrastructure. What is most valuable? The solution is easy to use. The solution integrates well with most Microsoft products. What needs improvement? The solution doesn't integrate well with all Microsoft products. There are a few that actually don't integrate well with IIS. If Microsoft IIS could work well with AppOptics or things like PHP, Python, and other custom languages that run on the webserver, it would be ideal. I think there are cases where people need to use Apache instead of IIS when IIS doesn't work well with other web languages. For how long have I used the solution? I've been using the solution for ten years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? The solution is stable. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? It's a good solution, but we don't use it on a large scale, so I'm not sure how well it scales. Currently, we have 250 users on it. Most are end-users, but we do have five admins on the solution as well. How are customer service and technical support? We've never reached out to technical support. Mostly if we have issues, we look to community support for answers. Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch? We also use Apache Web Server side by side with IIS. How was the initial setup? The initial setup is very straightforward. What about the implementation team? We handled the implementation ourselves. What other advice do I have? We use the on-premises deployment model. I'd recommend IIS for almost everything. I would suggest using use case scenarios. I'd rate the solution eight out of ten. Stability Issues It depends on the load of the server, but we have not had an issue. Scalability Issues No issues encountered. Customer Service and Technical Support Customer Service: I've not used customer service. Technical Support: I've not used technical support. Previous Solutions We switched because of the nature of the application and technology. Initial Setup I always design my systems simple and keep them simple as possible. Implementation Team We implemented it with in-house team. We like to keep the knowledge in-house. ROI It was crucial and it definitely paid off. Pricing, Setup Cost and Licensing Keep the systems simple. Try to work with open-source solutions and pay for technical support and subscription to support the projects. Other Solutions Considered Yes, I always and regularly evaluate. In case of Java we evaluated all applications servers which support JEE full profile. Other Advice I was using Apache Tomcat, JBoss AS (RedHat), WebMethods (Software AG) and IIS (Microsoft). All of them have they specialities, but depending on the goals and purpose it’s quiet easy to make a choice. Products based on Microsoft .NET do not give companies lot of options; either with Server Operating System shipped IIS, or the developer version called IIS Express. Applications written in Java, n opposite, can be accommodated on several fully profiled or non-fully-profiled application or web servers. Only have one application per server if possible. Room for Improvement * Logging * Monitoring Use of Solution I've used Microsoft NPS for four years. Deployment Issues No issues encountered. Stability Issues No issues encountered. Scalability Issues No issues encountered but always gor for two machines as one isn't enough and isn't fault redundant. Customer Service and Technical Support Customer Service: Haven't needed it yet. Technical Support: Haven't needed it yet. Previous Solutions Yes, we used RSA Radius. It was very hard to maintain and outdated. Initial Setup Straightforward, it's a feature of Windows Server and a basic knowledge of the radius principles are enough. Implementation Team In-house implementation. ROI Pretty good. Authentication for network appliances, load balancing products and wireless devices became easy to do. Pricing, Setup Cost and Licensing It came with the Microsoft contract. Other Solutions Considered No, we were unhappy with RSA Radius so we went for the 'free' solution. Other Advice It has many features, make sure they satisfy your needs. We are a system integrator and this is one of the solutions that we assist our customers with. Our customers are primarily government departments, agencies, and ministries. These organizations are not very comfortable with using the cloud, so the majority of deployments are on-premises. This solution is used for the customer's website or internal applications. What needs improvement? The areas of this solution that need improvement are monitoring, debugging, and troubleshooting. Having the monitoring as standard on the user interface would be nice. There needs to be an easy way to escalate technical support issues beyond level one, quickly. For how long have I used the solution? I have been using this solution for more than fifteen years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? This is definitely a stable solution. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? Scalability is neither here nor there. You can say it's scalable, but it's an open-ended question because you have to consider whether you can host an application or product for country-wide use. I'd like to say no, but it can be used as part of a scalable infrastructure. How are customer service and technical support? We have contacted technical support, albeit rarely. I would rate them a six out of ten. It is not that they are slow to reply, but rather they are slow when it comes to understanding the problem. They often repeat the diagnostic steps that we have already performed. The first level of support is not very good because by the time we speak with them, we are already past that point. This is because we do have experience and we can often solve the problems that are easy, or of medium-level difficulty. Consequently, if we have to open a support request then the problem is already difficult or complicated. We need to be able to escalate quickly. This is true in most cases, and the delay comes about because of the entry-level support people. If you previously used a different solution, which one did you use and why did you switch? In addition to this solution, we have worked with Apache Tomcat for Linux. The choice of solution is dictated by the customer's requirements. If it is a Java application then we need to use Tomcat or Apache. If it's a .NET application in use then you need to use the IIS. It isn't a personal choice, or whether one is better than the other. Rather, it is about the application. How was the initial setup? The initial setup of this solution is very easy. The deployment takes between thirty minutes and two hours, maximum. Usually, it will take one or two people to maintain this solution, including the website, if the whole infrastructure is Microsoft. What about the implementation team? We implement and deploy this solution for our customers. We have an internal technical team for this. What other advice do I have? This is a solution that I can recommend. The solution has been reliable. What needs improvement? The price of the solution could be less to improve. For how long have I used the solution? I have been using IIS for a long time. What do I think about the stability of the solution? The solution is stable. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? IIS is a stable solution. However, we use load balancers when we want to scale. How are customer service and support? The support from IIS is good compared to other vendors. However, the support is pooling over to the cloud reducing their support for on-premise. Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch? I have used JBoss and open-source Tomcat. Depending on the use we will use a particular solution. For example, if we use .NET as a core, we will use IIS. How was the initial setup? The implementation of IIS is straightforward. We do mostly MSI deployments but sometimes we do it manually. If automation is used the deployment can be done quickly. What about the implementation team? Depending on where we deploy the solution will determine if we use assistance. We use approximately two people for the deployment of the solution. However, The size of the service and the manner in which it is deployed or if it is automated will determine the number of people required for the deployment. Without utilizing such tools, as automation, additional personnel will be necessary. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? There is no license needed to use the solution. What other advice do I have? The newer version of the solution works better. We use two people for the maintenance of the solution. I would recommend this solution. If the user is developing around .NET then this solution is needed. I rate IIS an eight out of ten. Which deployment model are you using for this solution? The most valuable feature of the solution is its capability to create different kinds of reports and charts. It has an intuitive user interface and provides a lot of options for building reports. The solution is also very user-friendly. What needs improvement? The initial setup could be made easier. For how long have I used the solution? I have been using the solution for six months. What do I think about the stability of the solution? Our clients feel that other BI tools are more stable than IIS. I rate the stability an eight out of ten. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? The solution is scalable. I rate the scalability a nine out of ten. How was the initial setup? The initial setup is a bit complex. Our clients manage their own setups. What about the implementation team? The deployment can be done in-house. A team of three or four people is required to deploy and maintain the solution. We have a GIS solution from ESRI, ArcGIS Web Adaptor, and it is installed on top of IIS. It's part of ArcGIS Enterprise solution. What is most valuable? The graphical user interface makes it easy for users to configure the sites. What needs improvement? This solution needs to be easier for cases where you want to have an IIS cluster. If you have several IIS solutions running, it is not clear on how to make them communicate to each other. Normally, IIS Web Server run independently on each server. To have "IIS cluster", currently you need to have a network load balancer (NLB) appliance running in front of them. We use NLB to distribute the load and have high-availability of IIS Web Server. For how long have I used the solution? I have been using this solution for more than twenty years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? This solution is stable. However, because of the way IIS interacts with the application pool, it is possible that another application running in different application pool, can have an impact to other application pool. Theoretically, each application pool will have independent process and should not conflicting between each other. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? This is something that we are looking into because we want to have IIS Web Server that can communicate between each other. So far, we cannot find this options inside it, anywhere on the menu. In our office, we only have few people who use this solution and we don't have a plans to increase its usage. It is for internal publishing only. But for our client, we implement this solution in production environment and so far, no critical issue happened to run IIS Web Server on it. How are customer service and technical support? We have not been in contact with technical support. So far, we have been able to handle all issues. How was the initial setup? The initial setup of this solution is simple. Even if you aren't familiar with it, it is not complex. If you are installing it inside Windows Server, it will take less than half an hour to deploy. In most cases, it can be done in fifteen minutes. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? This solution comes included with Windows Server. What other advice do I have? My advice for anybody who is considering this solution is to go ahead with it. This is a mature product that is suitable for production environment. It competes with the Linux-based web server, which has more features. However, Microsoft is becoming more friendly with the open-source community, so hopefully they will implement more advanced features inside IIS. It seems to me that Microsoft has been evolving the product with one of the main goals to be ease of use. However, I think that they need to focus on handling the biggest load. We provide information systems for public and private companies. What is most valuable? The solution is easy to use, easy to maintain and isn't too technical. What needs improvement? The solution's security needs improvement. The solution should improve the cluster environment and load balancing. For how long have I used the solution? I've been using the solution since 2006. What do I think about the stability of the solution? Occasionally we have a problem with stability. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? The scalability isn't so good. We have about 2,000 internal users, but externally we may have as many as one million users. Our service is public service. We do plan to increase usage. How are customer service and technical support? We have a contract with technical support and they have helped us with issues in the past. We've been satisfied so far. How was the initial setup? The solution is easy to set up. It took maybe an hour or two to deploy. What other advice do I have? We use the private cloud deployment model. I'd rate the solution seven out of ten. We primarily use the solution for a publishing website. What is most valuable? The solution is the easiest way to publish applications which have been designed by older development tools. What needs improvement? Different parameters in this product can be a bit difficult. As soon as you introduce something new, and especially in the Microsoft environment, you always need to do new training sessions to understand what are new functionalities are. Finding the correct options are not more intuitive, and it should be. For how long have I used the solution? I've been using the solution pretty much since it was first released. What do I think about the stability of the solution? The solution is very stable. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? The scalability depends on how you have set it up. If you're running IIS on a single server, it might not be as capable as if you are on many in a cluster or with load balancing and so on. How are customer service and technical support? We don't a contact for technical support, so I mostly have to cross my fingers and hope that nothing goes wrong. How was the initial setup? I wasn't around for the initial setup, but I can say that we started fairly simple, and it's grown more and more complex as time has gone on. What other advice do I have? We use the on-premises deployment model. The solution is stable, it is working, and you can do a lot with this, but it is not my favorite product. What I like most about this program, is the fact that it's built into Windows, and then I also like the interface and the support. What needs improvement? I haven't yet come across anything that needs to improve. Perhaps the installation process can be simplified. For how long have I used the solution? I have been using IIS for ten, twelve years now. What do I think about the stability of the solution? The stability is okay. It's fairly enterprise-grade and robust for enterprise use. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? The program is scalable. We have between 50 and 100 users. How are customer service and technical support? Microsoft's technical support has always been very good, so I am satisfied with it. Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch? We've used this platform from the beginning. How was the initial setup? The initial setup was somewhere in the middle. It wasn't complicated but it wasn't easy either. The documentation isn't very good and the options are very complex. What other advice do I have? I will definitely recommend this solution to others. The primary use case of this solution is for infrastructure, Active Directory, infrastructure functionality, such as DHCP, and also, it's the main operating system for virtual machines. What is most valuable? What I like the most is that it is easy to use. What needs improvement? The price could be reduced. In the next release, I would like to see better integration between the cloud environment and the on-premises environment. For how long have I used the solution? I have been working with this solution for twenty years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? The stability is better than it was in the past. It is better today than it was five years ago. How are customer service and technical support? I am no longer involved in the technical areas anymore. Instead, I am a part of the trade sales team. In this role, I have contacted Microsoft for the commercial parts but not for support. How was the initial setup? The initial setup is straightforward. It is deployed in all environments, on-premises and on the cloud. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? The price of the cloud system is a bit high. It allowed us to set up and use a Windows Server we had in place already to host our internal web page. What is most valuable? We have not needed to scale out with it, as we use it for very lightweight things. How is customer service and technical support? I have not needed to contact technical support. Which solutions did we use previously? I have tried other tools (such as Apache), and found that IIS is more stable and easier on the memory for low resource systems. How was the initial setup? Initial setup is straightforward for a basic setup (e.g. one host hosting HTTP traffic), but can get more complicated the more features you want to add (e.g. Windows Authentication, HTTPs, web farm, etc.). What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? It is licensed with your Windows installation which makes it relatively cheap if you already have a Windows Server sitting around. Which other solutions did I evaluate? We also evaluated Apache, but found that IIS was easier to set up for what we wanted. What other advice do I have? Give it a shot. The features are included for free with Windows, so test it out. If you are unhappy, it is easy to disable and switch to a different solution. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? In the previous version, scalability was a bit difficult, but with the latest version, a lot of improvements have been made. It's getting better. How are customer service and technical support? We don't use technical support. We do find there is a lot of community support online if we need it. How was the initial setup? The solution is easy to setup. It's very easy to comprehend. What about the implementation team? We implement the solution ourselves on behalf of clients. What other advice do I have? We use the current version of the solution and the on-premises deployment model. We're partners with Microsoft. We generally work with enterprise-level organizations. I am working as a Software Project Manager for a software company in their Pharma Services Division and using IIS on Microsoft Windows Server for local deployment of our pharma related .NET application. It is built in C# and used for uploading and validation of pharma-related information in a locally deployed application by a team of data associates and data analysts. The information is then transported after validation to the web database on Azure from the local database using an internally-developed desktop application. How has it helped my organization? IIS is the best option on Microsoft Windows Server for hosting and deployment of .NET applications, either in a local environment or on the web. The graphical user-interface of IIS is very easy to use and helpful in the effective management of applications. It comes with Microsoft Windows Server by default, which makes it easier to get started for hosting .NET applications immediately, with no hassles of installation and setup of any other web server. The integration is the best, being a Microsoft .NET application hosted on Microsoft IIS running on Microsoft Windows Server with Microsoft Database Connectors and Drivers. What is most valuable? IIS has a very simple and user-friendly interface, which helps a lot in effective and efficient management. The simplicity of the interface helps the newbies to learn to manage it fast. What needs improvement? IIS needs immediate improvements, especially in the area of security management. Having no support for other than a Microsoft environment and programming languages limits the usage of IIS in many cases. The capability to host and deploy open-source applications would definitely add more value to it. There should be plugins to enable it to support open-source programming languages. It might be easy because we've used it for long. When we use a product for a long time, it becomes second nature. We have never had any security breaches. What needs improvement? The user interface could be improved. We do not like it when the UI is changed often. Every time there is a change, we need to restart the server. For how long have I used the solution? I have been using the solution for 15 to 20 years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? The product is completely stable. What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
