Product Reviews
Lenovo ThinkPad P50 20EN - 15.6" - Core i7 6700HQ - 8 GB RAM - 500 GB HDD is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've bought many of these, most are amazing I use this as my daily driver, and also is the standard workstation in the engineering firm I work for. There are about 20 of these in our production. The bad:Like another reviewer wrote, there are just a couple of workstations that have a bad dock replicator (big connector underneath the laptop), which Lenovo diagnosed as a bad motherboard. I guess the QA side of this model could use a tune-up.The good:Not enough space to write about the good. Let's start with the three year warranty. Yeah, and I've used it, and it's great customer service. We demand a core i7 quad core processor. The model that previously had this available was a Thinkpad W541, in which I also have many of. The improvements of the P50 are amazing. Thanks for bringing back the HDD activity light! Am I the only one who wants to know when my HDD is being hammered? Obviously not. I'm so glad this has one!The performance is amazing. I run virtual machines through VMware Workstation Pro every day, so I crammed 64GB of RAM into it. It just sounds silly saying it sometimes, but I definitely use it. It takes whatever I throw at it.For storage, it will take SATAx1, and M.2x2. I use M.2 for my system volume. Super fast. The down-side to this was that I had to separately purchase a caddy for my M.2 SSD, which was kind of odd since there's not much else to do with these slots. If you decide to go with M.2, make sure you buy the caddy with the heat-transfer material on it. It's like a padded foam. Also, make sure you have the M.2 SSD connected at the proper orientation. It is real easy (too easy, IMO) to accidentally connect it upside down, which will fry your SSD instantly. The cooling is great. There is one fan dedicated to the CPU, and another fan dedicated to the GPU. Exhaust vents out the back and out the sides. It gets hot in your lap on High Performance setting, but I really think this is a non-issue. It's a freaking quad-core i7... What do you expect? From the factory, it comes preloaded with Windows 7 Pro, but a quick call to Lenovo and you can have a Windows 10 Pro USB stick mailed to you that works like a charm. All the drivers will be included to get up and running. Side note: I can't say enough about Lenovo's support. I spoke to them three times and got someone who spoke English in the US.Using the touchpad fingerprint sensor is a dream; no more sliding your finger over the 'scanner'.The trackpad changed, and for the better. There are three buttons below the trackpad; ugh, thank you! I HATE using the trackpad clicker thing on other trackpads like the X1 Carbon and other models. It works most of the time, but not even close to using it on a Mac. I'm not really a Mac fan, but gosh their trackpad is amazing. Also, I have experienced some annoying things with the trackpad of the P50. I guess each trackpad has their flaws. The battery is fair, but again, this is a quad-core i7! I can get three hours on this working it like a dog on Balanced Power setting. A little over two hours on High Performance power setting. That's pretty good IMO, considering what a powerhouse this thing is.If you're an I.T. Manager or a technician, etc., you will love the repairability of the P50. The rear panel comes off to get to all the storage, Wireless NIC, and 3rd and 4th SODIMM slots. There are three labeled screws to remove the keyboard, and with the proper tools, the keyboard is off in no time exposing the 1st and 2nd SODIMM slots. I always upgrade my P50 workstations with more RAM and SSDs so I take the panel and keyboard off of every laptop I purchase. To sum it up, this is a great laptop if you need high performance and aren't one who is picky and complains about it being hot in your lap. ALL OF MY USERS love this laptop. It has not let us down.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Bought 10 units, had to return 3 of them I bought 10 units for the office, one didn't work with any docking stations.Another one wouldn't recognize the factory installed hard drive. And the last one would shut off after 30 seconds on battery even though the battery was 100% charged. Maybe it was a bad batch but still, one bad unit I understand, two units could be considered really bad luck, but three units? I don't think that's just a coincidence.I will say though, the return process was the easiest I've ever had to deal with. I called CDW and they sent me a new unit the following morning, (almost) no questions asked. And I had to do that three times. I guess that's why CDW has such a good reputation.
