Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great unit, regarding the noise I found a solution. I replaced the cheap and nasty default fan with a Noctua NF-A6x25 and it's dead silent now, voided warranty of course but I wasn't willing to put up with the absurd jet engine racket.I've ran it under max load decharging, charging and normal use. No temperature issues, even inspected it with a thermal camera and there are no real hot areas. I guess the default fan is there to deal with being in hot cabinets etc.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I tested an Eaton 5SC in pre-release and really enjoyed this unit. I put the UPS through the tests and everything came out more than satisfactory. At one point I had 8 desktop machines connected (without monitors) to this UPS and was seeing 4-6 minute run times which was more than long enough to safely shut down or keep the machines running during quick power spikes. The small footprint of this UPS really makes it ideal for under a desk for your power users that have big beefy desktops with tons of peripheral devices.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from HARDWARE REVIEW: I have had a 5SC 1500 in production for a few months now and I really like the hardware. The 5SC came with all of the features I wanted like true sine wave output when on battery, built in surge protection, user replaceable batteries, etc. without a bunch of fluff or features that I would never be able to use. I feel like it is well built and will last at least as long as our previous other brand UPS devices.SOFTWARE REVIEW: ** 2 stars and that's being generous. I have had issues with the software from the minute I installed it. For some reason the software wouldn't find the UPS when connected by USB. I tried serial connection out of desperation and that finally worked. Then I had a terrible time getting the network shutdown configured, then the problems with "lost communication" started, then the issue where the software would re-spawn itself faster than I could kill it off (I think I had 100+ instances of the "Intelligent Power Protector" open)... come on Eaton, make some software worthy of being paired with this great hardware!

The 4 outlets are currently running a Clone Core2 Quad system running Windows 8.1, a HP 2211X 22" monitor, a Epson CX6000 printer and my DSL modem. The USB is connected to the computer but a first the software would not find the UPS. Had to reinstall the software and now it shows up. currently showing 102w load. software is good for a simple setup. The estimated runtime is 14 minutes and tested to 18 minutes which is very good. The only option not available is a network card and would not recommend this for a production server where you want the ability to be notified of a power failure. but would do good for desktops, switches or routers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I received a 5SC 1000 2 weeks ago. This unit is a nice size for an under the desk type UPS. It has 8 power outlets on the back. More than enough to plug everything into the device!I had an issue getting the Eaton Management Software to find the unit but afterupdating the included software to the latest version the UPS was immediately detected.The display on the unit is very nice! very easy to read. and provides more info then Iwill probably ever need. Such as the estimated run time, Volts, and Watts currentlybeing drawn from the UPS and many other pieces of info.My only real complaint with the unit is that the fan is noisy and runs all the time. Ican see this being a complaint if this unit is used under a desk for workstations oranywhere people would be nearby. It is a great unit otherwise and mine will likely find its home running my Switches, NVR unit and small NAS unit!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Eaton 5SC 500i ReviewThe hardwareThe review unit is an Eaton 5SC 500i UPS with a rating of 500VA or 350W. This is the entry level 5SC unit with others in the range going up to 1500VA (1050W). The 500i has 1 IEC C14 input socket and 4 IEC C13 output sockets on its rear and communicates to a host machine by USB or RS232. Its physical dimensions are miniscule at 210x150x240mm (HxWxD). To give you an idea of its scale it’s about 2/3rds the size of an HP MicroServer (see pic) so in my small office it doesn’t look out of place and can be tucked away neatly. It also has a nice LCD panel on its front giving you a readout of the key performance parameters of the UPS like percentage load, load in Watts or VA and approximate battery runtime at current load. A minor irritation is that the LCD backlight turns off after 3 minutes and there is no option for it to remain lit. So if you want to take a peek at the stats and the unit is further than arm’s length away you need to first press a button for it to turn on the backlight.The softwareThe Eaton UPS communicates with the Eaton Intelligent Power Management software which can be installed on Windows, Linux or MacOS. The installation is straight forward and the software is managed through a web browser. The software gives detailed information about your UPS and gives access to control its settings and what to do when certain conditions are met (e.g. Power loss, bad battery etc.)I found the configuration of the software was fairly straightforward, however there is very little information in the documentation about some of the advanced things you can do with scripting to control what happens when certain conditions are encountered. Since my home network contains 2 small ESXi servers for my virtual labs (running vSphere 5.1 free edition) I wanted to run an SSH login and script to initiate a graceful shutdown of my VM’s and hosts as well as my connected Win 7 physical desktop machine, but I couldn’t find any examples that I could understand at least to give me a leg up on that one. Thankfully, I did figure out the problem with what I wanted to do and found a way to do what I wanted. This involved triggering a scheduled task which triggers a batch file. Don’t worry there will be a How To on the Spiceworks community detailing it!PerformanceI’m running a Windows 7 Core i5 machine, an HP Proliant N36L Microserver and a Fujitsu Siemens RX100 S5 rack mount server from the UPS. The two servers run vSphere 5.1 and 2 or 3 VM’s apiece. Under light loads the UPS is sitting at about 65-70% utilisation with a reported run time of 7mins 48s. This means that the 3 devices are adequately protected under light load conditions. However, as soon as I ramp up the usage in my desktop machine and fire up a game (utilising all quad cores and crossfire graphics cards) the utilisation shoots past 105% and overloads, so it would seem that in my environment, the 750VA or 1000VA model would be a better fit. Anything drawing over 350W of power for more than a few seconds will trigger the overload scenario and the graceful shutdown sequence.Turning off the more powerful of the two servers allows gaming on the desktop without pushing the utilisation threshold, and since that server holds mainly virtual labs for testing software and services this is something that I can live with.OverallThis is an excellent little unit, albeit a little too underpowered for my home lab set-up. The best endorsement I can give it is that at some stage I will upgrade to its bigger 5SC brother and rely upon it to protect not only my desktop and 2 servers, but also my home networking equipment too.Thanks go to Eaton for the opportunity to review it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I just got a new Eaton 5C today, and it seems to be a very well constructed UPS. I plan to use it in my lab for testing, but eventually these may become my branch office server UPS units. Connecting the battery after shipping was way easier than on the evolution units, but removing the faceplate was just as difficult.I look forward to testing the software capabilities on my new linux box. I will post back with any updates.
