The D-Link 8-Port Desktop Switch with 4 PoE Ports (DES-1008PA) enables both home and office users to easily connect and supply power to Power over Ethenet (PoE) devices such as wireless Access Points (APs), IP cameras, and IP phones while adding more Ethernet devices like computers, printers, and Network Attached Storage (NAS) onto a network. Built with home and small business users in mind, this compact PoE switch operates quietly, making it ideal for use in virtually any room or office. In addition, this device can be wall-mounted so that it does not take up any desktop real estate (wall mounting kit included).
The DES-1008PA features 4 10/100BASE-TX ports that support the IEEE 802.3af PoE protocol. Each of the 4 PoE ports can supply up to 15.4 Watts, a total PoE budget of 56 Watts, allowing users to attach an IEEE 802.3af compliant device to the DES-1008PA without requiring additional power. This eliminates the need of having to place networking devices within close proximity of a power outlet and minimizes cable clutter in awkward places such as ceilings or walls. For devices that are not 802.3af compliant, a PoE adapter, such as D-Link’s DWL-P50 can be used to enable the non-compliant device to receive power through the DES-1008PA.
No configuration is required and installation is quick and easy. Support for Auto-MDI/MDI-X on all ports eliminates the need for crossover cables for connection to another switch or hub. Auto-Negotiation on each port senses the link speed of a network device (either 10 or 100) and intelligently adjusts for compatibility and optimal performance. When an IEEE 802.3af compliant device is attached, power supplied to that device will be automatically adjusted to fit the device. The DES-1008PA also features diagnostic LEDs, which display status and activity, allowing you to quickly detect and correct problems on the network. Enhanced network efficiency through features and demonstrate minimal downtime
What is our primary use case?
These are switches for networking.
How has it helped my organization?
D-Link switches improved our network efficiency in many ways. Number one is that they have 10 Gigabit D-Link with three ports. That increases the connectivity between the switches and the network cabinet with a backbone speed of 10 Gigabit. Then, there's the availability of segmentation of the network.
We also have the ones that do DHCP, then we have access switches. So, we have core switches and access switches. We use them for tool access switching and core switching.
What is most valuable?
There are many good points about this product.
Number one, they are very stable and easy to configure and manage. The pricing for the same features is reasonable, and there's the availability of local support and warranty.
Access control feature has been most beneficial for our networking needs. It also has a user-friendly graphical interface. It is easy to manage.
What needs improvement?
One of the issues is the range of their products. They need to increase it.
For example, if I want a 12-port switch that is fully managed, it's not easy to find. So, I have to opt for a 24-port switch that is fully managed, which might not be necessary as I only need 12 ports.
So if they could increase the range of the switches in regards to the features, and the number of ports, that would be beneficial.
So, that's the only potential improvement. The switches are perfect otherwise.
Ideally, I'd like to see a central management system included as part of their license, not as a separate purchase. Currently, we have to manage switches independently. A central portal for managing all switches and providing visibility would be great.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using this solution for three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The downtime is very minimal. We haven't had any downtime. They have such protection built in, so we haven't had any issues with malfunctioning for the last two years.
It's managed well.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I used UniFi Switches. I can't directly compare it with this solution because they serve different purposes.
For our business needs, we have to work with enterprise switches, so I can't provide a comprehensive difference between the two.
How was the initial setup?
The setup is straightforward. We just use the graphical interface. We don't have to use a lot of commands.
The installation and deployment process is very easy, requiring minimal effort.
What was our ROI?
It has a good return on investment. It has indeed saved us resources significantly.
For example, it could be up to 90% in terms of resource savings. It has contributed to our goals.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
When it comes to pricing, D-Link is actually better compared to others in the same range within the marketplace.
What other advice do I have?
Overall, I would rate this solution nine out of ten.

I use Juniper switches as well. Compared to Juniper, the solution is easy to access and maintain. Juniper is complex. We use Juniper in the backbone network since its sustainability is good. Juniper is good for heavy networks and D-Link is for Wi-Fi networks.

The tool is easy to implement.
What about the implementation team?
D-Link's team helped us with the implementation.

D-Link Ethernet Switches' price is good.

We have deployed the solution for 100 users. It is scalable, and we might consider increasing the usage.

It is a simple solution. Thus, we can address and resolve the technical issues ourselves. For queries, we refer to online support portals, including blogs and websites.

The solution’s initial setup process is straightforward. It has a simpler user interface that makes the process easier. Although, it requires assistance from a professional if you don’t have prior experience working with it. In the case of a proper network design, deployment takes a day. However, it largely depends on network size. It took a week for us to complete it.

We deployed the solution in-house with the help of a network engineer who could execute it fast enough.

Stability is poor, and distribution at the core is not good
What is our primary use case?
If we want to use an E-switch traffic flow, we use the leaf-spine architecture with 9300 Nexus switches. On the other hand, if we need normal data for a campus network enterprise level, we use the 6500, 4000 or 6000 series. We use these switches for only the access layer.
What needs improvement?
This solution is not good for distribution at the core.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using this solution for 25 years. We use layer three and two architecture. It includes all kinds of solutions. We also use the leaf-spine architecture, where we use the Nexus. It is deployed on-premises.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability is not good and could be better.
How are customer service and support?
The technical support could be faster.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was very easy and user-friendly. Because we use it for only the access layer, it takes about 30 to 40 minutes to deploy.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing is good. Most enterprise customers prefer Cisco or Juniper switches because they have better scalability and reliability. But most customers use D-Link Ethernet Switches because it is cheaper. The licensing cost is also very low.
What other advice do I have?
I rate this solution a three out of ten. I would recommend this solution to a company with a small budget, but if they have extra funds, there are better solutions like Cisco, Juniper or Aruba.

Easy to set up, stable, and offers reasonable pricing
What is our primary use case?
We primarily use it for a switch, and it's often chosen due to its general affordability.
What is most valuable?
The solution's pricing is very reasonable.
The product has the capability of connecting switches and also 10 gig ports, which is very economical for any kind of business. If you find, say, a model in Cisco, the price would be double for the same features.
The solution is stable.
It's easy to set up.
The solution can scale if necessary.
It's easy for us to provide a demo to clients for a couple of weeks if they would like to try out the product.
The product is simple to manage.
What needs improvement?
The solution needs better local support. The SLA needs to be better.
For how long have I used the solution?
I work with the solution from time to time. Sometimes we continuously work on D-link, and sometimes there is a pause for three or four months. In total, it's likely been a few years at this point.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability has been pretty good so far. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze. it's very reliable and the performance is good.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Typically the solution is used in medium-sized companies. Hotels, for example, are a typical client, as they have a limited budget for this type of technology.
The solution can scale if the company needs it to.
How are customer service and technical support?
As service providers, we are able to provide support to our clients.
The local support needs to be better. If we have expert engineers in the local market, it would be helpful. For example, while I cannot disclose and sales details, when Cisco gave us our switch, there was a little bit of end customer to support from them at that particular time. During that particular time, if the customer sees any problem, Cisco would mitigate that problem. I don't know if D-link has the same SLA type or not. Right now, it seems that the support just isn't as good as Cisco and what they offer upfront.
I haven't required any technical support from D-link as it's easy to manage for a technical person. It wouldn't be easy for a typical end-user, however, we can provide support.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We also work with Cisco or Juniper switches. Typically the solution we go with is chosen by the client.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is better than other switches as it has a multiple-degree interface. The CLI is just one. Not all the switches have a degree interface, whereas most of the D-link switches do, at least, in terms of the managed switches.
We provide maintenance and support to our clients as needed.
What about the implementation team?
We help our clients implement the switches. We do the initial setups for them as needed.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
D-link switches have a better price as compared to other brands. This is its edge in the market. The affordability is great.
What other advice do I have?
Our company does not have a business relationship with D-Link.
I have a model in D-link and DGST6C0S, and this is a 48-volt switch.
The version of the switches depends on the customer. We don't always work with the latest version. It depends on the customer's requirements.
This is the best solution as compared to other options - and that includes Juniper, Cisco, and NETGEAR. Out of those, D-link is the better one.
I'd rate the solution at a nine out of ten.

Cost effective and scalable
What needs improvement?
We Plan to switch from D-Link Ethernet Switch to Cisco products. While we have so far been satisfied with the former and consider it to be more cost-effective, we do have issues with its stability.
For how long have I used the solution?
We have been using D-Link Ethernet Switch for upwards of 10 years.

The solution is scalable.

We have not opened any support tickets involving the solution, as we have not made use of technical support.

We have been using the solution for upwards of 10 years and so far so good. However, the majority of our switches are 100 Mbps, so we're looking to upgrade to one gigabit.
What other advice do I have?
While the solution is budget-friendly and reliable, someone who can afford it should go with a different brand.
When comparing D-Link Ethernet switches with those of Cisco, the port switch is the way to go.

Simple, cheap, and easy to configure, but should be more stable

These switches are simple and easy to configure.
What needs improvement?
They could be more stable. They were not as resistant as Cisco. After some time, some of them failed. This could be because we import quite a lot of products from different horizons, so there is no guarantee of quality. In Africa, these products don't always directly come from the manufacturer. We get these products from the Middle East or Asia. Therefore, you cannot be sure that the quality is exactly similar to what you have in Europe or America.
For how long have I used the solution?
We used these switches for a couple of years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We had small switches, and they didn't give us much trouble. After some time, some of them failed, but this could be because we import quite a lot of products from different places, so there is no guarantee of quality.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We had 50 users of this solution.
How are customer service and technical support?
We don't always have a direct representative of these brands in Africa. We have a few companies that import the equipment and sell them, but we don't have the same kind of technical support that you get in Europe, America, or Asia. We rely more on our own technical staff when there are problems. When we cannot solve a problem, we have to put them aside and buy new equipment.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We are now using Cisco switches. We used the small models of D-Link Ethernet Switches, but they were replaced with Cisco switches. D-Link Ethernet Switches are not as sophisticated and resistant as Cisco switches.
How was the initial setup?
They are easy to install. It takes less than 20 minutes.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
They were cheap. We were not paying for any license.
What other advice do I have?
I would recommend these switches. We choose solutions based on what we have in the market. We don't focus on any specific brand. It depends on factors like the funds available, the trend in the market, and the availability of the product. We don't always have Cisco available in this market, and when that's the case, we may go for some other brand. This is mainly due to the situation of our own computer equipment market. It has been quite some time since I last saw D-Link in the market because we have not been buying switches.

A cost-effective switch that is easy to set up and has room for growth
What is our primary use case?
I am a network administrator and D-Link Ethernet Switches make up part of the network that I manage. These switches connect the workstations to the servers and then through the firewall to the internet.
What is most valuable?
These switches are very easy to install because there is no configuration. Rather, they are just plug-and-play.
What needs improvement?
D-Link switches are not as robust as Cisco.
I would like an option to create different networks within the switch.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with D-Link Ethernet switches since 2014.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
We have not had any trouble with stability. We moved offices two years ago and went to bigger cabinets with more switches, and there haven't been any problems.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
This solution is pretty flexible. It has room for growth.
How are customer service and technical support?
I have never had a problem that required calling technical support. I have had some of these same switches for more than five years without trouble. If I did have an issue now then I would just replace them because they are not expensive.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I used to work a lot with Cisco routers and switches but have not used them since 2011. In comparing them, Cisco routers are more expensive but they are also more robust.
Feature-wise, for the same level of switch model, I don't think that there is much of a difference other than Cisco being more expensive.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is very easy and I've had no issues with it at all. Once all of the cables were in place and we turned it on, it worked right away. I had one core switch, to which all of the other switches and the firewall were connected.
What about the implementation team?
I did the deployment myself. All of the configurations were done on the firewall side, which is the hardest part. With a small office like we have, it is not complicated.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The D-Link Switches are cheaper than Cisco.
What other advice do I have?
This is a product that I would recommend without any reservation. That said, there are some improvements that can be made.

I'm both using the solution and offing it to clients. We're using it as a hub. We use it in the main office area.
What is most valuable?
The solution is industry-standard for the most part.
Connecting with smart ports is easy. It's plug-and-play. There is no configuration necessary.
It is stable.
What needs improvement?
We can't use it in a manufacturing context as there is no in-built fan that can handle the heat.
They need to make a product that would support the industrial side. We need them to support a minimum of 350 watts.
We need them to meet our industry standard, which they do not do.
They need to enhance stability.
For how long have I used the solution?
I've used the solution for about ten years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The solution is mostly stable. I'd rate it six out of ten. It's okay. Everything is available in a smaller size, so you have to prepare the rack size. It would help if they gave us the proper mounting for this particular device. Only one CPU size is available. We need more power supply.

The solution can scale. I would rate its ability to scale seven out of ten.
We have different clients across the globe using the solution. They are enterprise-level companies.

Technical support is pretty good. They aren't too bad.

The best part about these switches is that they are cost-effective.
What needs improvement?
The throughput on D-Link Switches is pretty low.
The interface is not very user-friendly. This is unlike Meraki switches, for example, which have a graphical-based interface (GUI).
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with D-Link Ethernet Switches for approximately eight years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
These switches tend to heat up and occasionally hang. Overall, however, this is a stable product. I would rate this stability a four out of five.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
We are a very large company with approximately 12,000 employees. Perhaps 1,500 of them use this product. They work in a variety of roles in all categories from the top to the bottom of the organizational hierarchy.

We use it to connect to some servers in our network. We also use a firewall from Sophos.

It should be more stable, and it should have good integration with the cloud. It should support configuration, supervision, and control through the cloud.

Provide great security and ease of configuration
What is our primary use case?
We use an older model, but they've been good as they've lasted all of these years.
We use them for general use. There is nothing specific about them. They're suitable for small to medium-sized businesses. From my experience, big corporations don't use them.
The ones we currently use are unmanaged. We plan to migrate to managed switches in the near future. Security is the biggest thing I'm looking at.
What is most valuable?
The best features are the ease of configuration, how easy they are to play with, and the security features, as well.
What needs improvement?
I would say they do exactly what they're supposed to do. The two models that I've got are just fantastic. Amongst the others, some others were decommissioned just because we went to newer stuff, but I can't find anything wrong with our D-Link Ethernet Switches.
For how long have I used the solution?
D-Link has been part of our business structure for at least five to ten years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Stability-wise, I would give them a rating of 10 out of 10.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I would say so they are scalable. We used and purchased channels according to our needs. They are reliable. Even though we have more channels than we need, more ports, we can substitute them on a smaller setup. Although we don't use all the ports, we can move these to a tougher setup. So scalability-wise, I think it's great.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I did use TRENDnet and Netgear, but because of the availability of the product, the price, and the fact that they have a great history surrounding reliability, we chose to go with D-Link.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup is very easy — plug and play and it works all the time.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
These units vary in price from $200 to one thousand dollars. They're available for a one-time purchase.
They're very competitive. I think they have an array of products that meet any price range. They have cheaper ones, and they have more expensive ones. I believe the unmanaged ones are very affordable.
What other advice do I have?
D-Link Ethernet Switches are worth it. The easier the configuration is the better it'll be. Just make sure they meet security best practices and standards.
Overall, on a scale from one to ten, I would give D-Link Ethernet Switches a rating of nine — they're top picks.

Easy to use, straightforward installation, but could be more secure

We have unmanaged switches that are just plug-and-play.

The solution has been issue-free. They have been stable.
We've made a one-time investment and have used it for ten to twelve years.
The pricing is reasonable.
It is very stable and reliable.
There is no maintenance necessary.
What needs improvement?
I do not have any notes for improvement.
This is an older product. I'm not sure if newer products have more features.
It could be easier to scale on managed devices.

How was the initial setup?
Deploying D-Link switches is straightforward. You can install and configure a switch in around 15 minutes. There are two ways you can configure a switch. You can use the default interface on each switch or you can configure the switches with a management tool from one computer. It's much easier to use a utility because you don't have to configure each switch separately.
You don't need a consultant or integrator. It's easy to set up the switches yourself. The technical team lays the cable and mounts the hardware, and I handle the deployment and configuration alone.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
D-Link switches are cost-effective.
What other advice do I have?
I rate D-Link Ethernet switches nine out of 10. I recommend D-Link. Cisco equipment is much more expensive. All of my companies in this country are already using D-Link.

Scalable, simple setup, but stability could improve
What is our primary use case?
D-Link Ethernet Switches are used for connecting LAN devices for conductivity. In our organization, we have each LAN having approximately 20 PCs attached.
What needs improvement?
The D-Link Ethernet Switches have to be replaced because they are difficult to manage and security is poor. They should add centralized manageability to make the solution better, it will allow administrators to better know what is happening on the network.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using D-Link Ethernet Switches for approximately 15 years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability of D-Link Ethernet Switches has decreased over 10 years. There can be some hanging and restarting issues.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
D-Link Ethernet Switches are a scalable solution.
We have approximately 500 to 600 users using the solution. The users are from all engineering departments, including the administration department.
How are customer service and support?
After using D-Link Ethernet Switches for a substantial amount of time we had to replace the power supply unit and if they were not able to be replaced we throw out the unit. However, we did not contact the support.
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup of D-Link Ethernet Switches is very easy.
