Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made my 2012 MacBook Pro run like a new MacBook Pro As an old-school Apple user, I miss the days when Apple would assuredly upgrade every last one of their laptop and desktop computers, even if by only a small margin, every single year. The second-generation of MacBook Pro saw improvements to its hardware every single year from 2008 to mid-2012 in some capacity, and while every MacBook Pro of the era is among the best computers Apple ever released, purists like myself know that the mid-2012 MacBook (9,2) is arguably THE best MacBook to ever come out of Cupertino, CA. The Retina models that followed basically changed nothing in the hardware for the next 4 years, changing only the display and raising the price, so when it came time for an upgrade, it felt absurd to dish out $2000 on what was essentially the same computer I already had. Fast forward to late 2019. After 5 years without a computer, I luckily reacquired my old 2012 13" MacBook Pro. I was ultra hype to learn it could run Catalina (hardly) and I installed the OS, replacing High Sierra. Needless to say, this computer fell on its face. The MacBook Pro I remember was fast, nothing slowed it down, and now its painful to even use. Opening a second Safari tab, no more RAM left. The reason why many, myself included, consider these the best MacBooks ever is because they were the last model that Apple allowed its users to upgrade any part of. The 8GB Crucial RAM kit had significantly dropped in price since I sold this MacBook in late 2014, and I ordered a 2x 4GB 1600MHz RAM kit for a whopping $30. Its been 2 weeks since the install (which is super simple, and even for those who aren't tech savvy, Crucial offers help on their site) and I can't believe how different this computer is. It feels like it felt back in 2012 when I first bought it. Once again, I can multitask without closing out all but 1 of my open windows. Why spend $1500 on a new MacBook when you can spend under $50 for the same performance? Literally nothing slows this MacBook down now.
