Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Fourth Lens in the Trinity This lens was purchased as the alternative to an EF 600mm f/4L IS USM used for birds and wildlife. Obviously, the 600mm isn’t suited to walking around, or keeping on hand for opportunistic shots. The build quality is excellent. It is a rugged lens and while it is not light, it is the extensive glass and the metal body adding that weight so there’s real benefit to that cost. While the 400mm maximum and f/5.6 limit at that length can’t match it, the performance of the 100-400mm is more than adequate for the settings and conditions it does fit. I was afraid I would be compromising on IQ but that fear quickly vanished as I found that at any focal length this lens can produce razor sharp, high contrast shots I am happy to call my work. The usability is top notch as well. The AF is fast, not quite as fast as the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM but close. I rarely have a problem getting good focus, and in time to get the shot. The image stabilization is excellent as well, and with three modes, including one that stabilizes only at the moment of shooting, it doesn’t interfere with getting the shot with dynamic, moving subjects like birds in flight. With the barrel retracted and the hood inverted it presents a surprisingly compact package making it easy to carry and even with the hood in shooting position if it is zoomed to 100mm it can easily be carried on a strap while walking or hiking. The other unexpected bonus with this lens is the exception close focus distance of about 1m (3ft). Because of this, I find myself using this lens for a lot more “normal” photography, including portraiture, candids, and even “telemacro” of flowers, insects, and the like. Overall, this lens should be in the kit of any Canon shooter needing a telephoto lens in this range. The combination of performance, ruggedness, and versatility make it a lens you will find yourself using constantly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sharpness and color rendition After using the Canon 300mm L f4 for years, there was a learning curve to a zoom lens for my birding photography- not a fault of the lens, just me. And still working on getting the best from the combination of the 7d MkII with this lens and getting the best settings to make them work together best. Generally I'm in pretty good light and have learned to be less afraid of bumping up the ISO to get the best from this this lens, which sounds like the opposite approach but has really worked well. I've had the lens for about six months now and just had two great shoots with it- one in Eastern Oregon tracking the birds over there and just last week (June 3rd, 2016) over at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area tracking a pair of Peregrine Falcons who were gather 'meals' for their three chicks. It was a challenge to keep up with them but I got some outstanding photos of the pair, especially when they transferred the 'meal' from the male to the female as she prepared the meal for the chicks. The balance of holding this lens handheld during that sequence on that 7d MkII was really important in getting those shots. So many that I've shown those to asks if I took them- they've seen other photos that I've taken but practice- and good fortune- made that series just stellar! The detail in those made easy identification of the 'meal bird' and gave a feeling of really being right there. Two years ago I rented a 150-600mm and found it cumbersome to work with and even when steady and everything fine tuned, the 400mm shots from the Canon looked better and sharper, cropped mind you, than the 600mm shots from the other lens. What I learned from that is that I wouldn't be missing that extra 200mm. I tried the lens with an off-brand 1.4 and even though that's not the best matchup, those looked as good or better than the 150-600mm- so yes, the Canon 1.4 MkIII is on the shopping list since if that one can work that well I'm excited to try it with the newer and better matched Canon! The main point for me was that the lens felt more like the 70-200mm f2.8 MkII, which I'm used to- well balanced, great sharpness and, as I noticed with the that lens, the color of the images is just so right on and true, I noticed softness and weak color in that 150-600mm. Yes, I could have saved money but the image quality is where it's got to be at and it just wasn't there- so glad I rented it instead of buying it and waited for the replacement of the original 100-400mm. The lens 'anti-creep' feature is great too, the zoom torque adjustment ring. I haven't used a polarizer in years but that Canon thought of that feature in the lens hood is just another example of how well thought out the lens is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lens Arrived Defective and Not Repaired Correctly I purchased this lens in May 2018. I could not get a shape image and in having no experience with Canon's 100mm-400mm I thought it was me, or perhaps it needed a tripod. Maybe over sensitive? Finally in January I sent it for service under warranty. They found multiple issues and "repaired" it. I tested the lens through the window, but didn't try it at all distances. I took it out last weekend and it still isn't fixed. I sent it back to Canon (out of warranty and Canon is charging me to fix a lens that has NEVER worked. So in 1.3 years, I have not been able to use my lens. Worst purchase ever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Lens I'm more impressed with this lens after each use. Just took some landscape shots of the sunrise looking east up the Columbia Gorge. Nice to be able zoom into selected areas. Found taking photos of wildlife is also has become a new photo op as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp glass and fast auto focus! I purchased this lens to extend my reach for Rallycross photography. I had been using my trusty 70-200 F2.8 ISM for years, but needed more reach further out on the course. I was apprehensive about this lens at first, but read others reviews. The first time out on the course it found it to be a total game changer for my photography. The auto focus is super fast and the glass is very sharp at all focal lengths. I used this in -30 temps without a single issue. It's a quality built and light lens for all of the focal length you get at 400mm. I have combined this with the C sized sensor of my 7D Mk II to achieve just over 600mm of zoom. I know a photo journalist that uses this same lens professionally for sports. It has proven fun for wildlife photography as well. In good lighting, I don't think there's much the lens can't handle. Very impressive. I'm so glad I bought this.

Use it on my 5d mark IV as well as my 80D when I want that extra 1.6x’s reach. I use it for moon and sun photography as well as wildlife. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from very sharp, easy to handhold for shots I bought this a month ago for use on my 80D. I wish I could have bought it sooner. I have gotten some great looking wildlife shots and did so hand held. The lens seems easier to hand hold on camera than with my ef-s 55-250 stm lens. I think the extra stops of image stabilization is the reason. Its a very sharp lens. Out of the camera, each whisker of the cougar shots is sharp. I was about 30 feet away from the cougars and shooting through a thick slab of plexiglass

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Nearly Perfect Lens! This is a review of the new Canon 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 Version II lens. I receive no endorsements nor other percs from canon, however I do belong to Canon Professional Services as it is quite cost-effective and allows me to borrow and try out lenses that I am interested in aquiring . What you are getting here is a very extensive and honest review. I had owned the original version of this lens for 3 years and shot about 300,000 pictures with it(Since I have sold it probably gives you a clue to where this is going). I am very critical of my photographs. Perhaps more than most, but not as much as others. I do use Lightroom and Photoshop for adjustments and use them to clean up some of the images from time to time, but mostly I like to stick to a pretty original image. I have used the original lens on a 60D with pretty good results but for AF reasons I moved up to the 7D. The 7D gave me good images in good light, but since I mostly am a birder with cropping and lighting requirements I had many of the same noise problems you have no doubt read about. A great camera with the right lens and lighting, but I did struggle with it. A year ago I bought a used 5D3 and then my world changed. The old lens on the 5D3 was excellent pretty much all the time and even with the canon 1.4x version III at F9 produced just really excellent results. When the new version lens came out I was intrigued with the 4-stop image stabilzation, additional lens coatings, close minimum focus range, MTF charts, and enhanced autofocus system both with and without the converter. So through CPS I borrowed a new one for 10 days. It was a very sharp copy and right a way I could see anecdotal improvements in the image clarity. The lens worked exceptionally and I liked it. Thinking this was a CPS loaner lens my thoughts were this thing had to be calibrated perfectly as they would not want a less than stellar copy going out to potential customers so my thinking this would be the high standard of this lens. Right off the bat what I can tell you is that with the extender on I can just use F8. On my old lens I needed to use F9 for the same results. If my subject is steady, which is seldom, I could take shots at 1/60 of a second, but preferred 1/125 at a minimum. At 1/250 everything is always clean and almost all are keepers. The copy I had was sharp at 5.6 without the converter and really the only time I change it is for DOF issues. Ditto for the extender. I use it at F8. I know there has to be a difference in image quality, but most of the time you cannot see it unless you really pixel peep which no customer does. I was very surprised by this. The tele worked good in with birds in flight. I took extensive shots of Pelicans diving and it was difficult to tell when the converter was used. Often times I had to go to the exif data to see. I sent this loaner back and ordered a new one, knowing it couldn’t be as good. Well when it arrived it was perfect. It was exactly the same as the loaner in every aspect, maybe even a little better without the teleconverter. What I can tell you after about 50,000 shots with this new lens is that it is nearly perfect. The AF is very fast with and with the converter. The IS system is as advertised. I usually only use a tripod on landscape shots but I get good landscapes even handheld. The minimum focus distance is wonderful, but I have read reviews that it can replace your macro lens, which I do not agree with. It is nice for closeups, but my canon 100L2.8 IS macro absolutely smokes it when you do real macro work. Even though it is a little heavier the weight seems to be distributed back towards the camera which makes it a bit easier to handle. In summary all I can tell you is that I do not have deep pockets and every purchase I make is an excruciating one. But after buying this lens I have absolutely no regrets. I can offer no cons other than the price, weight, and one year warranty period, but even those are reasonable considering the quality of the lens and the images derived from it. Canon engineers really nailed this one. I hope this review can give some sense of confidence should you purchase this lens, irregardless of the camera you use. It improved my 7D quite abit, but I much confess I rarely touch that camera since I got the 5D3.

When I moved up to the 5Ds I got the new lens at the same time. Could not be more pleased. Was out on my deck when I saw some carpenter bees and thought this could make a great picture. Shot one with the bee in mid flight and could even see the wings.

The AF is suitably fast in both applications- I have only had to use manual focus a couple of times when zoomed in on a very small birds, etc. Very happy with the performance of this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Range, Sharp Images, Even Wide Open at 400mm I have been shooting motorsports since the 1970s. Back then, a 70-200mm lens was a bread and butter lens and all you really needed. These days, for safety reasons, tracks have moved us behind more fences and barriers. 400mm is pretty much a "normal" lens if you want to fill the frame. in 1999, I bought the original version of this lens and had a magazine cover with it's first use (Forza Magazine. Switching to this improved version (based on the recommendation of Canon Rep Matt Thompson) shocked me with the greatly improved image stabilization and image sharpness at 400 and wide open. Plus, you can shoot with the newest 1.4 converter for even more reach and still get publishable results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens I have had the old version of the 100-400 for 1 years with my Canon EOS 5DMark III and used it primarily for wildlife. I got the new version two days ago. This version is so much better. The sharpness is far superior to the old 100-400mm. I took some test shots handheld and enlarget on the computer displey virtually no chromatic aborration the speed and accuracy perfect. The image stabilization is terrific and the optics are very sharp . Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I had the mark 1 and never had a problem in the 10 years I owned it. Any way I had it cleaned under warrenty twice and now I have to be more careful

EF doesn't work with an extender Selected this lens to pair with an EF 2x III extender thinking it would give better versatility than selecting a longer 500 or 800 lens. Sad and disappointed that EF signals are not passed through the extender from camera to lens. Keep that in mind if selecting this lens.

I have shot several full moon pictures at 400mm (on a tripod and can clearly see all the contours of the moon. Most importantly, I have been able to use this at ISO 6400; 1/160-1/250 inside convention centers and high school gyms to shoot gymnastics competitions and winter guard competitions over the full focal length range. Images are crisp and clear coupled to the 5DSR. The image stabilization is amazing. Grain doesn't get unacceptably bad unless image is significantly cropped. Outdoors, this lens is simply incredible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lens I wanted this focal length L lens for quite some time. I just didn't like the push/pull style of the first design. Once the second version became available with the twist zoom and the optical improvements it became a no-brainer. I had tried a third party 100 - 600mm zoom lens but I was not impressed. Based on my experiences with Canon L series lenses I believe I'm going to be very happy with this purchase.

When my husband got the new 100-400 lens, I was blown away by its sharpness and fast focusing. A couple months later I got the same lens for our trip to Alaska. I used the lens on a tripod and hand-held. The quality of the images is superb. Only downside is the new lens cap which comes off too easily.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Sharp Images Best I ever had in a long range Got this lens and I love the quality of it and the sharpness of the images at all ranges of the lens. Over the years I had many canon lens even back in the film days. But this EF 100 - 400mm ll is the best of them all. It work great with the EF 1.4x lll extender with no image reduction at all. Also works great with the EF 2.0 x lll extender but with no AF. But I know that when i got it , but 800 mm great reach. Canon sure makes good products thats way there the leader in sales over time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best lens I ever purchased Best lens on the market 100-400MM L ii I recently upgraded to the new Canon 100-400MM L ii after owning version 1 for 5 years. The technology Canon put into the new ii lens is amazing. Sharpness, quality, color, faster AF, quiet motor, new twist design, less chromatic Ab, more glass. Matched up with a Canon 5D Mark iii, my photos took the next step in perfection. Canon has been building cameras and lens for a long time, they know what their doing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Great Lens I traded my earlier version of this lens in for the EF 100-400mm II version in early July. It was used this past weekend to shoot the Cleveland National Air Show and the results were out of this world. Photos of jets moving at speeds up to 600 mph were crisp and sharp. When coupled with my 7D Mark II it made an unbeatable combination. I highly recommend this lens for anyone that wants to get up close and get the best results possible. This has been used for equally sharp wildlife shots of eagles and other birds in flight.

This lens is perfect for up close tight shots and for long distance shooting. Perfect for wildlife, racing, still or action. Works well with and without IS and provides the picture quality I desire. A little pricey for many, it's a must if you quality and need to reach out. Canon has done this lens right. Thanks guys

Yes, I could have saved money but the image quality is where it's got to be at and it just wasn't there- so glad I rented it instead of buying it and waited for the replacement of the original 100-400mm. The lens 'anti-creep' feature is great too, the zoom torque adjustment ring. I haven't used a polarizer in years but that Canon thought of that feature in the lens hood is just another example of how well thought out the lens is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New and Improved!! I upgraded to this lense last summer. I was pleasantly surprised how well it focuses and functions especially in low light. I sometimes use the 1.4X II teleconverter with my Canon &D Mark II and again I see improved images.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible! My favorite and my typical go-to lens I'm using this lens on both my 5DS-R and my SL2. The focus is very quick. Stabilization works great! I have used it with the 2.0X adapter (at 400mm 2x) and it doesn't autofocus for me ..it is best with manual focus but auto works in live view for some reason(?). I also have 24-105 f4L USM and a Si*ma 50mm 1.4 and the 100-400mm is the lens that is on the 5DS-R in my case. It stays on for 85-90% of my shoots. HIGHLY recommend this lens. I LOVE it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every cent! The price of this lens may make you hesitate, but don't let cost keep you from one of Canon's best lenses. It is well worth the asking price. I got this lens on a Thursday evening, and put it to the test the following Saturday. Went to a model airplane annual show and took over 2500 shots with this lens and my 5Ds R. The detail of in flight shots is outstanding. All AF point selection with AI Servo gave me a very high percentage of great shots. This will be a great combination for Birds In Flight. Resolution tests on a tripod were surprising. This lens beats most of my other high end L lenses. Canon got all their ducks in a row with this one. A friend is ordering one due to the results I've had with mine. Get one yourself, you won't regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible. Powerful. Fun. Every single time I take this lens out to shoot I end up with a big grin on my face. Previously I have favored primes over zooms and especially over variable aperture zooms believing that I could not get the image quality I wanted with a zoom. In the past this may have been true. Not any more. The sophisticated features and tech packed into this lens are incredible. Image quality is sharp at every focal length wide open. Stabilization works. It really works. Previously I would never have considered hand holding a 300 or 400mm lens. I shoot this lens at 400mm handheld all day long. Potentially, the 100-400mm replaces at least 4 or 5 other lenses for me: 70-200mm f/2.8 for sports. Typically I'd only use the 100-200 range on the 70-200 lens. And in full sun you have to stop down to f/4 anyway. In daylight the 100-400mm covers that same range for me and focuses as fast or faster. Macro lens. While the 100-400 does not achieve 1:1 magnification I rarely go that close anyway. Using 400mm I can stay back from my subject and still get superb isolation and background blurring. 300mm f/4 + 400mm f/5.6. The 100-400 has better IS than my old 300mm IS lens. I loose a half stop shooting at 300mm but the image quality and ease of use make this new lens a hands down winner. Compared to the older 400 f/5.6 prime I see no difference in image quality. Plus the 100-400 is fully weather sealed unlike either of the primes. 70-300mm L. At 300mm the 100-400 is faster: f4/5 vs f/5.6. Image quality is the same at all duplicate focal lengths. But, the 100-400 can use teleconverters where the 70-300 cannot. The 70-300 is alot smaller and lighter so I still grab it when I want a little less to carry. But overall the 100-400 may replace the 70-300 in my bag eventually too. And speaking of teleconverters, with the 1.4x III the 100-400 still focuses quickly on all my bodies and image quality remains solid even wide open getting 560mm @ f/8.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon Delivers Another Winner There have been some pretty comprehensive reviews - so I'll try not to be repetitive. I have had the previous Canon EF 100-400 for several years and it was always reliably excellent. Good response, very good imaging, nice range. The push pull zoom was always a bit awkward for me and the new upgrades along with the twist controlled zoom were enough to help me decide to switch. It is difficult to imagine the upgrades would be this good! This is a world class lens at a moderate price compared to other lenses that perform this well. Ergonomics are terrific. While fairly hefty, it isn't awkward - well balanced with intuitively placed controls. Works well with the 1.4 Extender version II. Loses an f-stop on the EOS 5D Mark IV but I don't see any significant image degradation. Autofocus still snappy even with adapter. The close focusing is nice and while it provides better range it cannot replace a true macro. It can substitute at times for a 70-200 if light is sufficient and the loss below 100 isn't critical, but I also have the new 70-200 F2.8 and it is just as much a step up as this lens - quite amazing. There is one negative for me on the new 100-400 - the tripod mount. While the new design allows the convenience of removal without removing the lens from the camera - it is not as well balanced as the old style and it is too narrow. I typically use the "foot" on the lens to set the rig on when I need free hands - this one is not stable! Not a deal-breaker but if I can find a better substitute - I'll swap it out. Very close minimum focus distance, so you can use it for big, clear shots of small things like lizards and pets, and yet with great reach at the far end of the 400mm range. Precision built, and solid as a tank. I LOVE this lens.

Since the warranty is up it sounds like it is gonna cost me to get it fixed. I'm not very happy about the short life span. I have grabbed some amazing shots with this lens though when it was in better condition.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive Performance Have used this lens for a half dozen wildlife shoots since purchase 3 weeks ago and am completely satisfied with the quality I have been able to achieve. Especially important to me is the Image Stabilization feature which works as advertised. I had a lot of trouble with handheld stability with my 70-300mm lens that does not have the IS feature and find that I am able to achieve crisp clear images at 400mm over 90% of the time with this lens while handheld. My experience so far has been in bright outdoor lighting and the image quality I obtain across the zoom range is comparable to my wife's EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens in the same lighting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Lens You Should Consider! The EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS II USM is an outstanding lens for several reasons. The overall build quality is superb and there are many beneficial features included with the lens. Zooming with the new rotational zoom ring is very smooth and the tension can be adjusted from loose, where the lens will extend out if the camera is held pointing down, to firm where the lens doesn’t extend when held pointing down. When adjusted to the firmer setting the lens still zooms easily. The autofocus is fast and has a button to set the desired range of focusing from close to infinity or 3 meters to infinity. The IS is very effective. When looking through the viewfinder and pressing the shutter button half way you can actually feel the camera and lens get steady in your hands. I shoot everything handheld. The IS has 3 settings, normal, panning or during exposure only. The lens hood has a little sliding window so you can adjust any filters you may be using without having to remove the lens hood. The lens hood also has a lock button that keeps it in place until you push the button to remove it. The mounting shoe can be removed without having to remove the lens from the camera. I like to rotate the mounting shoe up to the top of the lens so I can use it as a lifting or carrying handle. The lens is somewhat heavy but I can carry it for several hours without any difficulty and I have arthritis in my hands and wrists. This lens will focus down to slightly over 3 feet. I have taken pictures of butterflies from about 10 feet away and with only minor cropping produced pictures that match or maybe even exceed my macro lens. The lens is expensive but as they say, “You get what you pay for”, and in this case it’s definitely true. This lens may not be the best for all applications but for sports or wildlife photography it will be hard to beat. I have several other Canon lenses and I like them all but this lens is now my favorite. After purchasing this lens the percentage of my pictures that could be considered “great” has increased substantially. If you are serious about your pictures then you should consider this lens. Thank you Canon for another great product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lens For All Reasons Came up for a fair price used, so I took a flyer. Own an incredibly sharp 400mm f4 DO, so telephoto was pretty much covered. Also have the 180mm Macro, which is a standout lens. This lens covers both ends and what's in between, and does it with high contrast, high resolution, and tolerable weight. Certainly much less than carrying both the others into the field. It's my "walk around" lens, because of all this. Other photos seem to emphasize the telephoto capability. I'm here to say that it's also a great close-up choice. Not selling the DO or the macro, but I put them on the camera for their purpose, not grab shots.

I've taken hand-held photographs where object I wanted to get was moving fast. The lens locked on in most instances, allowing me to get photos that would not be possible using other lenses.

I can set it up looking across the apex at a race track and crop to 50% and read the small print the stickers. Then I can shoot pan shots of the cars with my 7D/EF 55-250.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens I have had the old version of the 100-400 for 1 years with my Canon EOS 5DMark III and used it primarily for wildlife. I got the new version two days ago. This version is so much better. The sharpness is far superior to the old 100-400mm. I took some test shots handheld and enlarget on the computer displey virtually no chromatic aborration the speed and accuracy perfect. The image stabilization is terrific and the optics are very sharp . Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I'm giving my new lens only 4 stars because I'm used to a 300mm lens that weighs only 1/3 that of the new lens. With time I'll learn how to best carry the extra weight so as not to strain my neck.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canikon? A dream come true! I've often wanted Canon lenses due to their breakthrough design and build. But having started out with the N brand, it was not to be. A couple of weeks ago I wanted to round out my lens collection with a super zoom, at least 400mm. The closest I could get was 200-500mm, 5 pounds of glass. Way too heavy for serious hand held photography. Then I discovered this Canon lens and said darn, I'd love to use it with my Z7. Out of luck? Well, I thought so. But I discovered that several third party manufacturers have begun to offer EF to Z mount adapters with microprocessors that enable communications between both brands! The result is a beautiful marriage between Canon and Nikon. This will undoubtedly sell more Canon glass! The EF 100-400 not only provides me with the missing range, it does so with class! And starting at 100mm means this lens can remain on my camera all day. Build is professional. Range makes it very flexible. Optical performance is excellent. Crisp contrasty, clear. It is simply a well engineered product and I'm in heaven. Here are examples of an industrial photographic shoot this week, straight and cropped.

The focus ring is so great and can focus more efficiently and quickly when going for any motion shots. I love the quality of the pictures, and how well this lens works for distance. Pictures will show you the quality of what you are purchasing from Canon. You will NOT be disappointed!!
