Know your gear

Incredibly lightweight, the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM is a fast and versatile lens with advanced AF and superior optics. With a 35mm equivalent focal length of 38mm, it's appropriate for a variety of purposes. The lens features optimized lens element placement and includes an aspheric element for high image quality from the center of the composition to the corners, and has specialized coatings on the lens elements to reduce ghosting and flare. To ensure excellent color balance, a 7-blade circular aperture provides superb out-of-focus detail. The EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM excels during movie shooting thanks to its STM motor that enables silent and smooth focus tracking (on EOS cameras with Movie Servo AF), plus a micro-stepping drive that keeps aperture changes quiet. The lens also offers full-time manual focus, manual AF adjustment (one-shot AF), and can focus down to a minimum distance of 0.5 ft. (0.16m). Delivering optical brilliance in a lightweight and unobtrusive construction, the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM is a great fixed-optical length lens for photographers looking to add a travel-friendly option to their collection.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lens great, service not so great The lens is great, the rating is because it took super long to be delivered. I understand delays, but they lost my package and wouldn’t call the delivery service to get any updates. I finally called the delivery service and worked with them directly, but canon didn’t do much.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Camera Noobie’s first lens If you’re a noob like me, there is no infinity focus on this so night sky shots are mostly a bust. But all in all a fantastic inexpensive lens. I recommend having this in your collection if you’re starting out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's an essential. It's impossible for me to not recommend this lens based on my experience because it punches so far above its size, its weight and its cost. Nice and flat form fits any APS-C DSLR perfectly and you'll love it as a walkabout lens. Images come out super sharp, f/2.8 is speedy in virtually all conditions, and the close focusing ability is super useful for everyday closeups. Even the tiny manual focusing ring is easy to use, despite its thinness. You really can't go wrong with this thing, regardless of your skill level!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LESS is MORE WOW - great simple little lens for learning and teaching photography - I just started using use it with an old Rebel T4, and it like makes it into a new professional camera again! Light-weight, affordable, sharp, with great definition (even tough condition like at 1/60, ISO100, f2.8 indoors on my moving children - came out beautifully! Outdoor photos were surprising mediocre - on a sunny day a lot seemed overexposed and washed out--that may just be my mistake on camera settings though...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Probably the BEST Travel lens available. I absolutely LOVE my 24mm STM. It is the perfect lens to take backpacking, as it is light and takes up very little space. I pair it with my SL1, and it makes for a point and shoot sized DSLR package. I have also used it for Street Photography, and it got me my first Explore on Flickr! It's tac sharp and great for landscapes. BUY BUY BUY!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy it! After months and months of research, hours on YouTube, and reading blogs I knew the 24 mm was exactly what I was looking for. Super lightweight extremely well-made. Very sharp as many have reported. This is a prime lens, it's not your typical kit lens. You will have to do some homework and figure out how to use it. I purchases this as a refurbished model and I can honestly say I will definitely buy another refurbished lens from Canon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Handy size, great results! I bought this lens to go along with a Rebel T5 kit I recently purchased from Canon. This lens is a perfect complement to the T5. It makes for a very light, easy to use system for wide angle shots. It has very accurate color reproduction, and is sharp too. In addition, close-up shots work well in macro mode. Many of my outdoor pictures were previously taken with a zoom lens at around the 24mm setting anyway, so using this prime lens has only made my pictures better. This is a great all-purpose lens, and makes a fantastic companion to Canon Rebel cameras!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the pancake size and the field of view The lens is unobtrusive, meaning on a small body (SL1 you could easily put camera and lens in a windbreaker pocket. I love the field of view, it is very similar to my older 35mm view finder cameras and I shot on them often before my first SLR in the mid 80's. It focuses very close which makes it a good lens for shooting small items for documentation, sales, & etc. Shooting with a fixed focal length is how I learned to shoot photographs and after looking through a set of shots taken with a fixed length lens vs a zoom ( I also have a 70-200 F4L, EFS 17-55 2.8 IS, and a EF 28-300L 3.5-5.6) the change in perspective where it is my feet not the lens doing the zooming is a nice change of pace and I find myself looking at and studying those photos longer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than I expected I bought this one on its first issue and I couldn't be any more delighted. It is super light, focuses in an instant and takes clear, sharp photos. It is a great focal length for general snaps with my T5i and I use it often when I need to strip the camera down to essentials for lightweight travel, hiking and the like. I highly recommend, at least for the practiced amateurs like myself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this lens! I think this lens will be my go to lens now. It's compact and lightweight and delivers amazingly sharp images with great color! It is perfect for my very small budget while satisfying the need for a good prime lens to use with my ASP-C sensor. Affordable and high quality. Thank you, Canon!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EXCELLENT lens for the price PROS: - Extremely lightweight, making prolonged shoots, walking around while on vacation, or in my case, hiking with it an absolute dream to carry - Extremely short and nimble lens. It sticks out just past the pop-up flash on my camera. You can literally carry this lens in your pocket - Great image quality, tac sharp even at f/2.8 - Very reasonable quality to price ratio - Metal mount ring CONS: - Barrel is plastic, but this shouldn't be a deal breaker CONSTRUCTION: Remember, you have to go into this purchase knowing you’re not getting an L series lens, especially at this price point. It is a cheaper lens in regards to both part quality and price aspects but I feel as though Canon has not skimped on the important parts of the lens such as the glass. The glass is very good and the mount is metal, not plastic. The barrel, however, is plastic but it doesn't effect your images so this is really a non-issue IMAGE QUALITY: This lens is surprisingly tac sharp at f/2.8 with respect to DOF. It does not at all get muddy at its lowest aperture like some wide open lenses can get (see wristwatch and leaf pictures). The versatility of this lens if just plain ridiculous. As I said above, It is capable of getting very close-up shots (not macro) but can also capture great landscapes (see sunrise picture). While you can certainly take portraits with this lens, the background blur may be a little underwhelming for some people, as it’s a 24mm lens, not a 50mm. So if you want more blur in portraits, perhaps this lens isn’t for you OVERALL: Personally, I love this lens. I think it’s extremely versatile in that it very nicely captures a large range of pictures from landscapes to close-ups. I think the pictures I have included speak very fairly to this claim. I bought this lens for a number of reasons. Namely, I wanted a lightweight lens that was capable of capturing images while I hike, such as landscapes. My EF-S 18-135mm zoom lens was just too heavy and bulky to comfortably hike with. The Canon 24mm pancake turned out to be the perfect solution to that problem. Taking into account the image quality for the price point, you end up getting quite a bargain. Canon can easily sell this for more than they are in my opinion. I am very pleased with this lens. It’s lightweight, small, produces great images, and is very affordable. Every amateur/enthusiast photographer should have it in their kit!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from love this lens! I just received this 24mm lens this week, it is incredible! I love prime lenses and this is a perfect wide angle length. The 2.8 aperture gives a beautiful and soft bokeh. This is my new go-to lens! I shoot mostly families, portraits, and weddings and can't wait to put this to use!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Razor sharp. This was the first lens I bought after I got my T5i with the 18-55mm and 75-300mm kit lenses. My main goal for this lens was sharp photos, but I was also looking for something unobtrusive to take with me for street shooting. This lens checks both boxes a million times over. I wasn't planning on using this lens for most of the best photos I've taken, it just happened to do a better job. I didn't take it off my camera the entire time I was in Colorado, and I got some beautiful sharp landscape photos out of it. I've also used it for creative portraits, detail shots, and architecture with great results. You have to use your legs with this lens, but you'll be glad you did because the composition will be more creative, and your focus will be spot on. The only kind of negative thing I have to say about it is that mounting it on the camera body kind of feels like you're hurting it; you've got to add more pressure to get it to click secure than the kit lenses I have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pancake That's Far From Flat Was a little skeptical going in because it was a new lens but at the price decided to take my chances and am so glad I did! The picture quality of this lens is PHENOMENAL!!! The colors are big and bold and don't even get me started on the black and whites!!! I'm currently using it on my 7D Mark II, and in just this short amount of time it's already become one of my favorite lenses. If you're trying to capture that up close and personal, bright and beautiful look, get this lens. You will not be disappointed. Great for head shots!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small footprint makes all the difference As a casual photographer, I really enjoying how easy it is to carry around my camera with this lens as my main driver. The decent dof along with the semi-wide angle makes it very versitile. I do use my camera equally as much for taking photos as I do for taking videos so the only complaint I would have is that the focusing mechanism is quite loud. This is a very minor inconvenience.. definitely not enough to dock off a star. Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent walk around lens I picked up this lens when it first came out and brought it to a trip to Asia. Great walk around lens, 24mm on APSC sensor is the ideal focal length. This lens can be used for any purposes. The lens is very tiny, yet build quality is excellent. Excellent optical quality. it produces super sharp image. Auto focus is excellent, quick and accurate. I wish aperture could be larger, as a larger aperture is useful at night, and produce nicer bokeh. Like the 40mm STM, there is no mechanical manual focus control, which will take awhile to get use to

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Lens for the price. I can't believe the quality for the price. I had to return the first unit, Took great pictures but it would not attach smoothly. Second unit attached smoothly with the same picture quality. Perfect at 0.5 feet, it's a fixed lens, when I took the picture of my son, I actually bumped him on his nose. Picture came out perfect. My son is in a photograph class, so he uses it more then I do now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great buy! This lens is great! Solid construction (metal attatchment), small and extremely light. The f/2.8 produces some fantastic images up close and the slight wide angle is great for portraits or landscape shots. Since it's a prime lens, you must zoom with your feet but the AF is good and dependable. Great lens, my only complaint is that f/22 is a little smaller than I wanted for some different long exposure stuff, but overall great lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works perfectly! I bought this during the 15% off sale, and was lucky that it also had a $10 markdown at the same time. But this is a fantastic lens even at the regular price. Great wide angle view for shooting landscapes or street photography, and it's small enough that I just leave it on my 80D while it's in my bag!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super lens! I've had this lens now for about 4 months, and use it with a Canon SL1, to have a very compact camera/lens option to carry when out and about on non-photographing outings. Its very sharp pretty much right from 2.8, the color and contrast are very good, and the 2.8 aperture helps you push it in lower light settings. If you think you like this focal length, there's no reason to hesitate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this lens I have had this lens for a few months and it quickly became my favorite lens. Picture quality is better than the 18-55mm kit lens. The 2.8 aperture allows for better low light photos and combined with its relatively wide angle of view makes it a good lens for night time star photography. Finally, I have to mention that this lens makes my camera a small and light package for carrying around all day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The little lens that could I am the proud owner of a Canon 50mm F/1.2 L, an absolute beast. I live and swear by that lens, but I wanted something wider to use on my 80D, something for more general use that could get me places without breaking the bank (a second time. I bought this 24mm without high expectations, but I have to say that I have been continually amazed at what came out of this little pancake of a lens. It's not perfect, vignetting can be quite strong and there is some image distortion, but those are things you can play around with, and the combination of the relatively wide aperture and super short focal length are an explosive cocktail that I just wasn't expecting at purchase. What a little monster.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Every Hobbyist Should Own The EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM lens meets all the must-have attributes, and throws in a few bonuses, too. Being a poorly-funded hobbyist, this was the third lens I purchased (after 18-55 and 55-250mm kit lenses). I'm currently using a T6i body, which the 24mm compliments well. The wider focal length and the wider aperture both aid my style of photography, which tends to be people indoors, often boudoir or erotic. I do wish that it had image stabilization which would help with video. Regarding video, the focal length on a crop sensor is good for use on a tripod capturing an entire room, but handheld is still too tight for selfie or closeup recording. A kit lens at 18mm does better, provided the lighting is adequate. For landscape images, the 24mm does well enough, but for that I don't really need a lens that fast, so I lean towards the 10-18mm ultra-wide zoom, despite its maximum aperture being 4.5. As most agree, cost-to-value on this lens is incredible, much like its older sister the 40mm pancake. I do feel like the 24mm has somehow managed to have the STM system improved over the 40. Both are good pancake lenses. Many talk about this being the best "walk-around" lens for a crop sensor body. I'll admit that it's easier to haul around, but it's only 80-something grams lighter than an 18-55mm kit lens, which could be better as a "walk-around" lens, aside from the wider aperture the 24mm offers. Personally, I've found myself leaving the 18-135 nano USM on my camera body most of the time, due to it's greater versatility. I really do love what the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM lens can do for me, but even more so, I appreciate what it makes me do. Being a fixed focal length, it forces me to see things a little differently, and certainly gets me to zoom with my feet. With 24mm not being particularly flattering to most humans, it makes me get a little more creative with how I shoot, but always gives me a good chance at getting great images with it. Overall, I'd stay this should be one of the first prime lens you purchase, along with the latest "nifty fifty".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High quality lens I love this lens for being so small and light weight. But what impresses most is the high quality images it produces. I use this for landscapes and night sky photos and it does not disappoint. The images are sharp from edge to edge and the bokeh is amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tiny, unobstrusive and SHARP ! This lives on my Rebel SL1, as if it was designed just for it. The 42mm or so equivalent coverage is a great companion to the EF 40mm f 2.8 I use on my full-frame Canon. I am finding it very sharp, even at f 11. The slight barrel distortion is seldom troubling, as I can fix it with any of several 24mm settings that Adobe LightRoom offers.A later version of LR will probably hit that sweet setting dead-on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tiny, light, and versatile! I bought the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM in November of 2023 as a 35-40mm equivalent prime for Canon's APS-C crop and it's actually surprisingly pretty good! The size of this lens is so small, you could fit it in your pocket. Once it's mounted to your camera, it basically feels like you don't even have a lens on it, its quite nice for keeping your setup extremely light. The 24mm focal length on the EF-S mount is close to the 35mm-40mm on a full frame camera, making this lens quite versatile. I have used this lens while walking around with only a wrist strap, it's extremely comfortable to use considering it's so small. However, it doesn't sacrifice too much image quality even with it's small size. There is stronger vignetting around f/2.8, but stopping down to f/4-5.6 yields a lot brighter corners and more sharpness as well. The f/2.8 is extremely handy though when light is not as available, just keep in mind this is not the sharpest f-stop for this lens as is to be expected. You can get reasonable amounts of bokeh with this lens, although you have to be fairly close which can cause some distortion, so be careful when taking portraits. The lens is also able to focus fairly closely which is a big positive, however the STM focusing motor can be a bit noisy and slow, so keep that in mind for video applications. There is also no Image Stabilization, so I would recommend using this lens with a tripod if you are using it for video. Overall, it's hard to not recommend this lens considering how small and light it is. It would be perfect for landscapes, street photography, car photography, and more because of it's reasonably low minimum aperture and tiny, friendly size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First timer I purchased this lens after purchasing a 50mm stm lens. My intention was to use the 50 as my all-around lens; however, This 24mm stm lens may become my ‘go-to’ lens for, mainly, family events and functions. This lens fits the EOS 77D (white dot vs. red dot).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very pleased with it While I haven't spent a ton of time with this lens yet, I've already taken some of the best photos I ever have with it. It's easily my favorite lens between my T2i kit and telephoto. I'm impressed with it and feel fortunate to work with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Try It, You'll Like It! I wasn't sure about this lens at first but once I had a chance to play around with it I saw just how useful it could be. There's no more, "OK, everyone get in close for the picture." Obviously it's amazing for landscapes as well. Pictures are tack sharp. I'm looking forward to make photographic experiments!
