Product Reviews
APC Back-UPS NS Network 40 BN4001 - UPS - 257 Watt - 450 VA is rated 2.6 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not buy for home office I bought this to keep my home's network up during power failures. It worked perfectly until the first time to power dipped. We were awakened by a very loud alarm. I don't care if the power goes out at 2:00 am. So I tried to disable the audio alarm and guess what ?You can't ! So unless you like to hear a smoke-alarm sound alike every time there is a power glitch, don't bring this product into your home / home office. You marriage will be better off.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Confused OK..I agree with Urban on the fact that you can't complain about something not doing something it was never intended to do. BUT: I have the Back-UPS Network 40, Model# BN4001. It has a USB to firewire cable that plugs in the back of the UPS and then USB to computer. I remember being able to "talk' to my UPS before, but I cannot now...I have had several computers over the last few years though so...it is my memory that is going. Here is the problem: The unit is starting to act strange...saying low power when it's full etc. I do not have the app (I thought I had) I used to use to get back up info such as status, power level and so on. Why does the unit come with a data comm cable and hook up to my PC if not to transmit data back and forth? If it DOES have communication capabilities, why is there no software download available at the APC website in ase we no longer have it do to reformat/crash and so on?Now, one other thing. APC needs to make sure their vendors (Best Buy, Staples, etc) are selling this product for the right reason. I would put any amount on a bet that if you walk into most of the big chain retailers and ask for a UPS for your home computer, they are going to walk you STRAIGHT TO THIS DEVICE which we are saying it is not really intended.Demand more from your retailers. Train the staff that this is for low voltage stuff and low even in that category (IE: cable boxes etc). Not high-end $2000 dollar machines that could potentially be ruined by being improperly protected.I, for one, am irritated at myself for not researching this better and finding out it is a "dumb" UPS 5 years after buying it, way beyond range of any warranty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product I echo the sentiments of TheUrbanPrimate ... This is a great product. Was just swinging by to see if firmware updating was required and was surprised to see all the negative reviews.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unfortunate experience I like APC's other products and have 4 of them in my house. Unlike the other products which I really like, the BN4001 does not allow you to disable alarms, a real problem for me. In addition, there is not software to interact with the product according to the Chat agent, though I can see the device using PowerChute. Perhaps others will be more forgiving. Buyer beware.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does what it's supposed to do. This unit has gotten several low rating reviews, so I decided to go ahead and create an account to post a high rating one. Most of the low rating reviews cite a lack of USB cable and powerchute software, and an inability to have the UPS shut down a connected PC.This is a specialty product. It is not intended to back up your desktop PC. It supplies less power, comes with less accessories, and features less technical configuration procedures than the more powerful models you might consider using for a PC. It does this, I assume, to keep its cost low enough to be an attractive option for protecting less expensive equipment. You might use this device to keep your DVR cable box powered so you can keep recording through an outage. Since cable still works when the power is down you might use it to keep your network connection and VoIP phone running. That's how I'm using it.Ultimately this is a product that lacks the bells and whistles of more expensive options, but is really intended specifically to provide backup power for "dumb" network equipment that isn't able to take advantage of those features anyway. This product does exactly what it is supposed to do. Giving it a low score because it lacks features it doesn't need doesn't make sense.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Personal Backup This unit is a great personal UPS, designed with a small footprint, ease of use, and reasonably priced. I always use APC for all my battery backup and surge suppression equipment.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bought the wrong UPS In the store, I noticed that this unit had a higher power rating than a more expensive unit. I could not see any other difference between the two units. I thought I was oh so clever to get the deal by buying the higher rated product.I did not realize that this unit does not talk to the computer to tell it when to shut down. I was wondering where was the CD to load the PowerChute software onto the computer. If APC had made it clear on the box what this was missing, I would have bought the other unit, assuming it did come with the PowerChute software,

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Misleading product name I purchased this product after reading the box which promised network protection. I expected to find software to communicate with the device, as a network device, for monitoring purposes. How can a UPS protect the network if it cannot be monitored, programmed, and controlled via the network? Other APC low end UPS devices have basic shutdown software to at least communicate to a PC and my expectations were that this device would communicate power disturbances in regards to non-pc devices rather than simply eliminating a communications port and having no capacity to manage the device.
