The Dual Universal Synchronous Serial Interface (USSI) module combines with other Atlas components to provide solutions for a variety of wide area networking applications. Providing two synchronous EIA-530, EIA-530A, X.21, (V.11), V.36, RS-449 or RS-232 DTE ports, the Quad USSI module serves as the interface for high-speed routers and other DTE equipment to access the wide area network.

Each port of the Dual USSI module can be configured through software to operate at any multiple of 56 or 64 Kbps, up to 2.048 Mbps. Using the Atlas 550 Channel Mapping Utility, a port can be mapped to one or more DS0s of a T1, providing high performance connections to remote locations. As with all Atlas components, configuration can be accomplished through a variety of mechanisms, including Telnet or VT100 emulation. SNMP management is supported for alarm and event reporting.

The Dual USSI module supports an 8, 000 Bps in-band management channel to communicate with remote Adtran TSU products. This channel is available full-time for sending management information between devices. The Dual USSI module includes an extensive array of diagnostic tools, to assist in identifying and correcting network problems. Included is a built-in Self-Test utility, as well as standard-based 511 test pattern generators and detectors for each of the four ports. Key interface signals from each of the two ports are monitored and displayed, providing real time status of network activity.
