Know your gear

Do you enjoy switching from autofocus to manual focus for greater creative control? The 17 mm f1.8 makes it easy with a two-position snap focus ring. With the ring in the autofocus position, you can either use AF or switch to manual focus using the camera controls. But when you want to shoot old-school, just move the snap ring to engage the Manual Focus Clutch for the satisfying feel of a classic mechanical lens as you focus in on your subject. A distance/depth-of-field scale on the lens barrel makes it easy to calculate the correct focus position; it's great for zone focusing when you want to be stealthy while shooting street scenes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than I expected! I just received a new (to me) Olympus 17mm f1.8. I had read lots of mixed reviews on the Intertubes about the image quality, and was a bit apprehensive about whether I'd be happy with it. Well, l am definitely happy! The lens is very sharp in the centre and quite good in the corners. Anyone who's considering this lens should not be discouraged by reports of mediocre image quality.

Close focus and manual focus clutch make this lens a pure joy to use on the street or in the studio. For me; The 17mm angle of view makes this the perfect all around lens

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic all round lens This is my favorite lens, and the one that stays the most on my OM-D EM5-II. It's fast, razor-sharp, and light as feather. Both autofocus and manual focus work great. If you're considering this lens, go for it: you'll love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great way to improve you manual focusing skills Love this lens, but unlike the other reviewers I tend to use more the 25 mm as I'm more comfortable with that focal range. This lens, the 17 mm which I'm reviewing now is great. If you are considering experimenting with manual focus and gaining a bit more control this lens is certainly a great way to. That was one of the reasons I got it: to learn, practice and move away from Auto mode. The snap ring is, as mentioned by other reviewers on youtube a bit wobbly, but works fine. All and all a fantastic lens to have, not really my focal length but I have used it in some occasions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from STILL MY FAVORITE MICRO FOUR-THIRDS LENS My M.Zuiko 17mm f1.8 came bundled with the PEN E-P5 and arguably is the lens that made me fall in love with the Micro Four-Thirds system. I previously had just the PEN E-P3 with the M.Zuiko ED 14-150mm f4.0-5.6 lens, which was great setup to take along hiking and kayaking, but I still preferred my Canon 5D Mark III for more “serious” photography. But, that all has changed. This lens is fabulous in low light, with good contrast, pleasant color, and lovely bokeh. It’s faster and even more accurate in focusing than the M.Zuiko ED 12-40mm f2.8 PRO, which I have since bought and is an excellent lens in its own right. The PEN E-P5 with the 17mm f1.8 lens is also great for street photography since it looks like an old style camera and is less intimidating to people. With the improved low light capabilities of the PEN E-P5 and outstanding 5-axis image stabilization, the Canon camera with its heavy lenses are staying at home more often these days.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My go-to lens This is my go-to lens for documenting my life at home. It is exactly the right length for photos of my kids, dogs, etc. I love to capture the environment and context along with the person, so I have this attached to my OMD-EM10 75% of the time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful sharp lens Recently purchased this lens after owning the portrait lens for some time. Needed a wide angle lens and this bright landscape lens was the perfect choice. Has performed beautifully giving bright sharp pictures. Also having the manual focus snap ring is a cool feature that I've been exploring as well. I think this is a great addition to anyone's camera gear!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens but not super sharp This lens is the one that is on my camera 90% of the time. It is great for street photography, event, landscape, etc... It is, however, not the sharpest lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb build quality. Superb sharpness. Recommended The build quality of this lens is superb. Its a metal lens. Feels very good in handling. When paired with the OMD-EM10, I found it to be well balanced. The optics are very good. Love the sharpness, colours, and contrast at all f stops. yes even wide open. The focal length reproduces the 35mm (35mm equivalent) which is good for general walk about purpose. I carry this lens with the 25mm f1.8 lens. These are always in my bag. Being portable, I don't feel the burden on my shoulder. Yes I highly recommend this lens to fellow photographer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You can leave it on your camera for your general photography needs. This is a great focal length for general photography. Great for environmental and street photography. The f1.8 aperture is a bonus allowing more light and softening the background. I really like the focus clutch. It makes manual adjustments a breeze.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely Pleased As long as I’ve had my EM5Mark2 I’ve heard what a great lens this is. I just have to echo many of the great comments that I have read about this lens, but when it comes down to it, I just really love the small and solid feel of it on my camera, fulfilling the purpose of a small, easy to carry, top quality camera system. Compact, sharp, fun to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much better than early reviews indicated This lens was much anticipated in light of the medicer 17mm/2.8. Image quality is much better than the 2.8 and autofocus is very fast. Initial reviews lamented the lens did not compare with the 75mm or the 12mm. However, it's almost as good, comes in a beautiful metal housing, and is ideal for moving scenes because of its quick focusing mechanism. A winner!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little lens Perfect little lens for my Em-5. Does not feel out of place on my camera. Quality feel and construction. Reminds me why I got the Em-5 in the first place. Small, light, affordable and takes great photos. wish I would have gotten this lens sooner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Most Used Lens Great walk-around lens when I'm looking to keep the camera portable. Photos are sharp and the F1.8 aperture really helps for low-light photography. Excellent build quality too. I'll continue to bring this lens with me wherever I go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Prepare to Have a New Favorite Prime I have a lot of primes in my bag and this one is probably the one prime that gets used the most. It is great for an all around walking lens. If you're into street photography, then this is just perfect for you. I've used this a lot indoors without flash quite frequently. With its fast aperture, you can capture more natural lighting without the use of flash in indoor situations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens in a small package I almost sent this lens back because of a snafu on my part, but ended up giving it a try. And I'm so glad I did. This is an exceptional lens. It is quick to focus (even on my EP-2) and is really sharp. It produces wonderful color. I did have to remember, since it's not a zoom, to get in close to my subject if that what's needed. The 1.8 has allowed me to take photos and create "atmosphere" that previously wasn't possible. Love it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Classic. Years ago when I first bought my original EPL-1 I paired it with the m. Zuiko 17mm ƒ2.8 and I loved it. The 17mm ƒ2.8 wasn't the sharpest lens of the block, but it didn't need to be. The focal length was perfect for street and the size made it easy to pocket. Those two attributes continue with what I consider to be the modern incarnation of that lens, the 17mm ƒ1.8. I absolutely love this lens. The build, the optics, the size, the weight, everything. The focal length of 17mm on a m4/3 body is just about perfect. The full frame equivalent of 34mm makes it an extremely versatile lens for a variety of photographic scenarios that I put myself into on a regular basis. I paired my copy with the LH-48B lens hood. I love the metal hood on the metal body, it just feels right. That's the thing about this lens, it just feels right. These days I shoot on an OM-D E-M10 Mark III, it's a smaller OM-D body and this lens is a perfect fit. There's just something about this combination that begs to be used, no, it demands that you use it. It has a feel, a potential that just seems to emanate. I purchased my copy in the Olympus Travel Lens Kit that ships with the m. Zuiko 14-150mm ƒ4-5.6 Mark II. That's a great lens too, worth of praise in its own right, but the combination together makes the the whole greater than the sum of its parts. At the end of the day, a lot of people may say that a 50mm equivalent is the classic focal length for street. I say that depends on the camera system. For Micro Four Thirds, there is no better classic focal length than 17mm. It just makes an OM-D feel, for lack of a better word, complete.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Perfect Travel Lens for Dry Days & Nights I really like to travel with my E-M1 II (and now III, if I ever get to travel again) and I love my M.Zuiko PRO lenses because they are so sharp ... and weathersealed. But they are also somewhat big and heavy for just everyday sightseeing shooting. That's where THIS little guy comes in -- at 17mm, it's perfect for street and landscape shooting, at f/1.8 it's perfect for indoor museum and restaurant shots, and it's short (and light) enough to make the camera feel travel-sized, as opposed to something you need to constantly keep from protruding into people and objects as you move. I recommend the metal lens hood to travel with this, because it not only protects the optics well but gives the whole kit a vintage vibe. It's a good, sharp-enough lens which kind of acts as a vacation from the larger, more "serious" PRO lenses. This one is just more fun ... as long as it's not raining, snowing, or blowing dust. But weathersealing gaskets would make it bigger and heavier, so that's the trade-off.
