This comprehensive solution provides a shared workspace to empower faster, better-informed strategic and tactical decisions, prioritize IT investments that support business goals, and improve risk management of organizational transformation.

IBM Rational System Architect - license + 1 Year Software Subscription and is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Needs improvement I am a BCom Informatics student and my university forces us to use System Architect and, to be honest, I don't like it. All the diagrams we need to draw can be done in Microsoft Visio without any drawbacks like connections being deleted if you give them names, diagrams taking up to 5 minutes to save and export, connections jumping around the entire diagram if you move them more than a millimeter. Another complaint is that the objects don't re-size when the font is changed or when more text is added to the object. Furthermore, the maximum size of the diagram page is insufficient. When making a context diagram for a fairly small company, I had to spend half a day re sizing and adjusting everything so it would fit on the page. The program is also very resource hungry - when working on the context diagram it took up nearly 3GB of RAM with no other programs open in the background.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Versatile plugin and data importation features but some aspects of the UI lack a common functional framework Valuable Features:The product supports a variety of meta-frameworks (Zachman, Togaf 9) and application portfolio scoring models. The product also has a very versatile plugin and data importation set of features that allows for the construction of heterogeneous models comprised of multiple internal and external model constructs.Improvements to My Organization:The System Architect Product has greatly assisted the corporate strategic planning process in two areas: the simulation of scenarios for Enterprise Transformation Projects and providing a global view of Enterprise Capabilities and Functional Gaps.Room for Improvement:Some aspects of the user interface lack a common navigational or functional framework.Use of Solution:Two years.Deployment Issues:No issues encountered.Stability Issues:No issues encountered.Scalability Issues:No issues encountered.Customer Service:Customer service has been better than adequate.Technical Support:I rate technical support highly.Previous Solutions:No previous solution used.Initial Setup:Straightforward.Implementation Team:In house team handled implementation.ROI:We rate the ROI as being as high as the manual alternatives (ad hoc test models) are much more expensive.Cost and Licensing Advice:The day-to-day cost is a combination of capitalized operational and license costs.Other Solutions Considered:We also looked at Sparx EA, and Archimate.Other Advice:Understand the totality of the modelling activities in the enterprise and how to best incorporate these model-building activities into an over-arching model construction framework.Disclaimer: I am a real user, and this review is based on my own experience and opinions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does everything we need Used this with the Corso ArchiMate plugin. It provided a very clear and easy to use toolset for building ArchiMate models. The report generator and heat map tools were excellent and provided us with some great management dashboards.Have used many other modeling tools and this one is no harder to use than the others but has some great features especially around the reporting and analysis side.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great tool Excellent tool - functinality set is deeper than any EA tool that I've used. Love the Explorer diagram. Love the TOGAF support. Love the ability to CUSTOMIZE the metamodel so easily. Love the easy reporting engine and the analytics. Makes the tool a breeze to use. Get info in, analyze it. I've used this tool at various engagements over the last 10 years and I've never been in a situation where I couldn't model something with SA. On the weekend I wash the dishes with it! Just kidding. This tool is the king of metamodeling and analytics in the EA space. That said, you need to know how to handle it -- what line drawing options to turn on for example -- and there are LOTS of options, maybe too many and they are in several places for some reason, but once you know that you can make her pur. SA is my favorite EA tool. Thanks IBM for the chance to say so.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very Painful to Use This Product Drawing OV and SV products in systems architect is the worst! Data flow arrows randomly rearrange themselves if you ever so slightly adjust the location of a performer. I've spent hours adjusting arrows just so, only to have all the work undone by moving a single performer. This product was state of the art in the mid 1990s. But the user interface has not kept up with the times. A recent "innovation" by IBM was introducing "gradient fills" to on screen objects. However, the gradient fill check box is not with all the other visual options. It's located in the diagram definition dialog box. But really, who cares about gradient fills? There are dozens of higher priorities they should be fixing; instead we get gradient fills. There must be six different menu items for adjusting look and feel. Perhaps IBM should look at other software packages for inspiration. This product is just terrible.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Modeling the architecture with ease System Architect allows me to model my architecture with ease. Capturing the business to IT alignment and impact analysis of the architecture. Using SA allows me to create models and link artifacts to show the full impact of change across the architecture.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Reporting in SA Reporting in SA needs to be revamped to a more modern style. Organisations capture a lot of great data in the tool but have great difficulties in reporting data out in a nice easy to use format. An iPad app would be great
