Canon PowerShot G5 X is rated 3.88 out of 5 by 25.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon G5 X is mature photo machine! I had a three choices chosen so far, between Canon G5 X, Panasonic ZS-100 and Olympus OMD E-M10 II. Olympus was too bulky comes with a lens only 3.5 in a short end. Panasonic shoots 4K videos and has a 10x zoom, but my final chose landed on Canon G5X, witch build solid, has a excellent VF with articulating touch screen. This is camera for people who knows how to handle good cameras in a professional manner.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not the sharpest knife in the drawer I purchased this to replace the Canon Powershot A95 that worked great until it didn't. I loved the moveable screen and purchased the G5X because it has a moveable screen. After spending too much time 'setting' up the G5X, I was never able to use the WiFi feature. I'm not sure it is 'operator' lack of experience because the directions are not very user friendly. The camera did not come with a cable to connect to a computer. I have a universal cable from my iPad keyboard and have been using that to transfer my pictures. They transfer fine but if I'm going to have to do things the 'old-fashioned' way, it woulda been nice to have had a cable included with the kit. Oh, speaking of not getting parts, it also did not come with a handy dandy wrist strap. It did come with a nice neck strap that I will never use though. Glad I had not recycled the A95 as I was able to use that strap. I’m not sure what the designer/engineer(s were thinking when they decided to put the controls so close to the edge of the camera on the right side. While holding the camera (like I learned in grammar school), my hand presses the menu button causing the menu to pop up on the screen while trying to take pictures. This is annoying. The dials are too close together, too small and hard to see. This camera is definitely poorly designed. On top of all that, I have yet to figure out how to use the video feature. Again, it must be operator lack of experience. Thing about that is, I’m pretty experienced with technology. I was able to figure out how to use the Rebel XSI after using an AE-1 Program Canon for years. The battery does not hold power very long either. If you find yourself with the G5X and take lots of pictures, make sure you have a back-up charged and ready to go. The learning curve is too great for this pho-tog. Unfortunately the store did not have a model on the floor for me to play with beforehand. However, I assumed (never assume) it wouldn’t be that hard to use since it favored the A95. I’m disappointed that I cannot return it to the store (14 day return policy). I will give it one more college try. If we can’t become friends I’ll put it on eBay.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BAD PLACEMENT OF BUTTONS HARD TO USE Sorry I sold my G16. I was excited to get my moveable view finder back, however the dial in front is constantly in the way when trying to hold the camera to even take a picture. The viewfinder if positioned facing you gets all greasy when you hold the camera also. The on off button is hard to access and the battery lid hard to slide shut. It's hard to push the take picture button too due to that useless dial in front.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Features and Quality I am comparing this camera to two powershots I have had in the past. A G11 and a G15. I still have the G15. Pros: Faster processor. Touch screen articulating rear LCD. Rear LCD turns off when using eye level finder. Eye level finder is also back-lit high resolution LCD. Flash covers the wide angle lens field. Highest f-stops is f11 which I like. Lowest f-stop at f1.8 and f2.0. The A/D converter seems to have larger bit depth compared to G15. Resolution is 20.2Megapixel. Picture quality (subjective comparison) is very good (at f8) compared to my 6D. On camera micro USB connector also works for charging from external source (see more on USB charging in the cons section). USB link to main computer is much faster than my G15. Wireless capability allows remote control of the camera. Aperture has a large number of leaves - almost circular when wide open. In-camera software makes good decisions on scenes. I use manual override for special effects. Cons: Lost stitch-up setting; lost color accent; lost color substitution feature. Needed all those features for product photography. So I'm keeping my G15. Battery is lower capacity and needs frequent charging. Bought a second battery for backup. Tried to charge the camera from my laptop or another 5V adapter and was not successful. Ended up buying Canon wall charger AND CANON USB CORD. I have used the wall charger more often than the stand alone supplied charger. Combination of the two works well when I need to charge both batteries at the end of the day. Wishes: Bring back stitch-up and color accent. Make the battery higher capacity. Design the charging circuit so that any 5V external USB charger will work. Conclusion: This camera is well suited for travel and casual photography. Manual controls work well. The camera feels robust and well built. I like the dial settings which Canon maintained on this model. I use the over/under exposure dial all the time when shooting black and white pictures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Camera Great, Camera Connect App not so good Though I'm happy with camera, Camera Connect App Software needs help badly... Once you get it to work (Say on an Iphone.... Which takes some doing... and the Easy Connect Software is not that helpful.... It then works fine....... UNTIL.... You find yourself having to connect to a different device... In our Case... IPad... Connects, but doesn't display pics... IPhone tested, and it connects and displays... Not IPad... Though it 'sees' the WiFi from camera!!! Eventually Reset Wifi settings in camera (No Nothing works!) and painfully connects to IPad.... Then it works!! But---You guessed it! Now IPhone doesn't work... Needs a firmware and software update to remember more than one device,k OR... a Much Easier way to connect.... It's kind of Painful... Most people will give up....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Compact Camera After a great deal of research we chose the PowerShot G5 X to document our (maybe once in a lifetime two week trip to Europe. That trip is long past now, and we are still ecstatic about our choice! And we are still happy to own this camera, using it almost daily to document our life. We are previously part-time pro photographers, shooting weddings, debuts, portraits, etc. We have camera bags full of Canon bodies, lenses and accessories. But for this trip we decided to lighten the load and find a compact camera that would take great shots under a wide range of conditions. One that wouldn't break the bank, would not need a sack of accessories, but would nearly fit in a pocket. Our European vacation was breathtaking, aided in part by this camera and all it was able to do for us. We have read some of the negative reviews and cannot figure out the fuss. We barely skimmed through the instruction book, yet still was able to photograph and video to our hearts desire. We took extra batteries and chargers, yet never once had the need for one in an entire day. And this is the single best low-light camera we have ever owned - and, believe me, we have been devastated by several other compact cameras in low light. We shot over 2,000 images on our trip, all of which were great. But through strict editing parameters we were able to narrow the field to about 1,000 photos for our online album documenting our trip. These included shots by an amatuer, of our wedding renewal, in which I simply handed off the camera and asked that they just shoot away. This occured is an ancient historic church with inadequate lighting. All I can say is, "Thank you Canon, and the G5X."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Where is the filter adapter accessory? With “bulb” setting the G5X is potentially capable of “fluid motion” photography using ND filters and 2-4 minute exposures on a tripod, which the G16 is not able to do. However, unlike the G16, the G5X offers no filter adapter for the necessary ND filters, thus negating potential utility of the “bulb” setting for fine photography. This is stupid.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Miniaturized DSLR I was looking for a high quality grab & go camera for times when I didn't want to take along my 5D. I originally bought the M3 Mirrorless, but couldn't get comfortable with it for a number of reasons, so it was returned. I purchased the G5X mainly because i just feel more comfortable looking through a Viewfinder. I've shot for about two weeks with the G5X and love this little GEM. It's basically a miniaturized 5D with a fixed, telescoping lens (24-70 35mm equivalent. It's a perfect daily bring along. Not small enough to slip into a pant pocket, but an easy carry. Excellent ease of use, terrific image quality, just what I needed for a grab & go !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bought It, Returned It Really disappointed to say that this camera was highly regarded and recommended to me by a Canon Explorer of Light who had correctly predicted how amazing it was to shoot. Why did I get my money back? Simply a backwards stepping de-evolution of Canon design. I've owned the Canon G7, G10 and currently G12. At close performance, the G12 is ridiculous. I've used it at numerous concerts and it never ceases to surprise me with it's solid performance. But that 12mp...killing me. Bought the G5X from a New York online supplier, purchased with an additional battery and the electronic cable release. Was really anticipating an amazing experience and was finally going to have a high MP point and shoot to join my pair of Canon DSLR bodies. The grip was just right, the overall design and ergonomics seemed brilliant. Then, I started shooting with it. For some odd reason (not that rare, Lexus made a similar stupid mistake on my automobile from the last generation to the present), the door on the bottom that secures the battery and the memory card is now a flimsy sliding design. I have a secure, spring loaded and latching door on my G12. Removing the camera out of my snug camera case, I repeatedly found the battery door had been slid open inadvertently. Strike One. The look, the weight and the feel of the G5X are suberb. But then I run into issue number two. In their infinite wisdom, a Canon designer and the corporate powers that be signed off on placing the video button to the left of the thumb rest on the back of the camera. I visited Best Buy and found this red video button to the right of the thumb rest on other Canon models. Repeatedly, I inadvertently found my camera filming in video mode when I had no intention of using it. I wasted I don't know how much memory as this thing just ran on silently filming the ground or wherever I happened to be pointing it. Strike Two. Having been a photographer for nearly 40 years now, about 30 of that as a professional, I knew that this would not end well. If I'm not able to adequately function with the camera out of the box, these annoyance would only grow worse as time went on. I did have a very generous 30 days to return the camera, and ultimately, grew scared I would miss that deadline due to unending business closures in New York due to a month long of holidays for the owners due to their religion. While on an assignment shooting a Cadillac event, the camera just abruptly quit. I cycled it off and on repeatedly, nothing. Having driven cars at a rapid pace and thrown a few of them around in the corners chasing apexs, I wondered if that little bit of movement might have rendered the camera unusable? The battery? Yes, the most common complaint against this camera was the battery. That MUST be it. But I had hardly used it. Wait...the video keeps coming on by itself with that red button. Well, that stinks and I can't believe the battery died that fast. While I was being driven around by a Cadillac driving instructor in a particular car, I removed the battery and re-seated it. Nothing. But I am persistent and hated being embarrassed by a brand new non-functional camera. I removed the memory card and battery, replaced them in their slots once again, and like magic the camera sprung to life when I turned it on. So, in conclusion, I had a brilliant looking camera that required ME to manually turn the flash on every time it was required instead of it being automatically fired; the battery door kept opening on its own creating anxiety of losing the memory card and/or the battery; the bad placement of the red video button to the left side of the thumb rest caused me to constantly hit it and turn on the video, when I had no intention to. I packed up the camera and shipped it back to the New York retailer, who spent all this week closed due to their holidays, so#instacar #carporn I will be waiting nearly two weeks post shipping to get a refund of my monies. I visited a local Best Buy with an outstanding selection of the newest cameras from Canon and Sony, having been prodded to go with a mirrorless camera. Several of my former associates from our newspaper photographer days have sold all of their DSLR for mirrorless, mostly Sony. Sadly, although I desperately want a Wi-Fi enabled high end point and shoot, with high resolution of 20mp plus and an automatic flash, it doesn't appear that any one manufacturer has that perfect package yet. I really wanted to like and keep this camera, selling my G12. Alas, it was not to be. I will be setting on my current arsenal - all Canon EF bodies and L lenses with EX flash units - until I can find something that will present a better than option to my 4 year old G12. Swing and a miss on this one, Canon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No underwater housing! I'm disappointed Canon hasn't seen fit to support the G5X with an underwater housing. Ikelite's housing is clunky as usual and no one else seems to be interested in supporting this camera with a housing. Too bad because this is a great all around travel camera with ideal features for both above and below water. Much better choice then the G7X.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from almost perfect I waited for this to come out since g12 released. This is it :D The only drawback might be the lack of filters support, but this was fixed by lensmate.com. They are making an adapter that lets you fit 52mm filters. Sweet :D Go buy it, you wont regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great ergonomics, bad lens This is a very exciting product. Manufacturers are realizing that view finders are important across all range of cameras. This was kinda forgotten during the 2000's and early 2010'. Even today many 'enthusiast' cameras still don't have viewfinders or have them as a 2nd thought add-on. You can tell Canon did their homework here on EVF, body styling, controls. Most people either love or hate the look of this camera. But the smart money is usually on miniaturization in all fields of manufacturing. For me this body is like a mini-mini-DSLR. Putting the squeeze in size over even micro 4/3 bodies. It just feels great in the hand. The EVF is large and beautiful. Something entire different than the puny boxes you get in something like Sony RX100 series which is just inadequate for anything but emergencies. The menu system is not terrible, but it's a little confusing when some of the outer buttons do things you can't get to from the menus like the scene mode. Menu's are typically an area where cameras can fall over. Either from being too voluminous in their settings (like Sony) or by not being updated in their styling enough through many years (like Panasonic). But overall the ergonomic and control options are very workable. If you've ever owned a DSLR or other camera with full controls you will find most of the standard features you want here. Of course no 4K video and raw shooting is not deep. Those features would serve you better going with something like LX100. But body styling on LX100 is inferior to the G5X. Every camera body is made or broken in terms of usability and image quality. What makes up IQ is the lens, the sensor, and the algorithms which process the data. The single largest thing preventing you from getting great images from this camera is the lens. Although when you are looking through the EVF you may think you would get the same look into your images, the evidence is that at least from 24mm-50mm equiv, this lens is very soft, pathetically so. If you check all the standard camera review websites you will see that only the studio images are anywhere sharp. One of these sites wondered if they had a bad copy of this camera but they did get similar images from other Canon cameras using the same lens (such as two other G7X). The lens on this camera is reported as soft from 24mm to 50mm by these sites and by viewing images from flickr and other sites. I reviewed lots of cameras and have not seen many with as much potential as the G5X but cannot recommend it until the lens sharpness issue is both acknowledged and addressed by Canon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Almost a perfect everyday camera I've previously owne most of the G series cameras, as everyday cameras when I can't carry my DSLR. My G12 was my favorite, until the 5GX came out. It's nearly perfect. Love the viewfinder that auto detects when looking through it. Great LCD image. The major selling point of this camera. Too many times bright sunlight makes using the LCD difficult. Problem solved. But I said, "almost". The 5Gx needs, * Filter support * External microphone and speaker connectors * Definitely needs a way to input external power, for time-lapsed photos, using my external trigger. Battery would run out, before you got a few seconds worth of stills for time-lapse video Still, I would give it a 5 rating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ok Camera I bought this canon G5x from HK few months ago. OVERALL I think Canon G5x is ok. I bought it because. I needed a small camera to walk around. So i don't have to carry my old canon 40d dslr. I suggest any G5x users buy the external flash light. The builded in flashlight is too weak for group photos or shooting any objects are more 4 feets away. The video is not bad, but. Only 1080p full hd. Canon should make 4k video standard to all advanced PowerShot G series cameras, EOS M cameras and EOS DSLR cameras. I am still learning how to take selfie portrait. The background is alway out of focus. I also put it on tripod and used self timer to selfie portrait. Ex birthday cake and I. For some reason those birthday photos were out of focus too. Maybe I did something wrong. Anyway this camera is not bad. It still has a lot of improvement to do. Hopefully G5x mark II will correct those problems and has 4k video feature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not as good as the G9 or G11 I got the G11 when the G9 stopped working. I got the G5 when the G9 stopped working. I was very happy with the G9 and G11. The G5 is not as good. It seem flimsier, especially the battery compartment. The battery runs down quickly, which rarely happened with the G9 and G11. When I download to the computer, it seems to be a smaller data data set than the old ones.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from PERFECTION & BUILD QUALITY Canon really got this right! What an amazing Point & Shoot camera with SLR photo quality and handling. First and foremost, the EVF (electronic view finder) is essential and included on this camera. What really impresses me is a built-in sensor that changes the LCD screen from Point & Shoot mode to EVF mode when your face or eye approaches the viewfinder. Just amazing! The 1" sensor provides detailed and clean shots that are as clear as those from my Canon 7D Mark ll SLR. Build quality is excellent but I wish there was some type of grip to hold the camera better. You'll need to use two hands from the bottom up to hold and shoot.. The flash no longer pops up into your fingers but has a reserved center location. Excellent in design. Speeds are not as fast as my SLR but consider the size differences. One issue I really like that Canon incorporates is that their support staff and warranty division are USA based call centers. Clear, concise and at-ease communication and understanding of issues. If you need to send a camera into Canon for repair, expect really excellent service. Finally, another reason to buy directly from Canon is that the Canon Warranty is superior to say, Amazon's which uses a third-party vendor for repairs. Amazon does not support its third party vendors that sell warranty insurance. A great if not the best Canon camera released in years! The Canon G5 X is stunning!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No microphone jack for recording video! i like it how light it is, but discovered it does not have a micorphone jack. So there is no point owning this camera, I will return it today. My entire goal was to get a flip screen camera for youtube videos, and the guy at bestbuy showed me this one, I am happy with my sony Alpha 7 R, which is a much better camera, but it does not have a flip screen.. so I thought I try this one. Shame though, cause I like how light it is and easy to manipulate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Potential to be great. On a recent two week trip to Italy I took my G5x and G16. I took 140 shots. Half with the G5 and half with the G16. I'm sad to say the G16 results were far superior to the G5. I used the same settings on both but the G5 prints were not as sharp. I will a loose a lot of money but I'm trading in. Too late to return.
