Know your gear

Add four 3.5" SATA III hard drives to your computer externally through USB 3.0 with UASP or eSATA. The S3540BU33E 4-Bay HDD enclosure lets you install four 3.5" SATA hard drives into an external enclosure, and connect to your computer through USB 3.0 or eSATA.

For fast performance and efficient data transfers, the enclosure supports SATA III transfer speeds - up to 6 Gbps when connected through eSATA. The versatile enclosure can also be connected through USB 3.0, with support for UASP, performing up to 70% faster than conventional USB 3.0 when paired with a UASP-enabled host controller. See our UASP testing results below for further details.

UASP is supported in Windows 10/8, Mac OSX (10.8 or above), and Linux. In testing, UASP performs with a 70% faster read speed and 40% faster write speed over traditional USB 3.0 at peak performance.

At the same peak in testing UASP also shows an 80% reduction in required processor resources.

Testing results were obtained using an Intel Ivy Bridge system, a UASP-enabled StarTech.com Enclosure, and a SATA III solid state drive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great unit ... but very, very bright lights Nice, well built drive enclosure. but the red-and-blue LEDs on the front are awfully bright, too bright - more appropriate for a disco than in my computer room. No way to disable or dim them, either. Otherwise, good hardware, running 4 8-terabyte drives on my Linux home server.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Constant disconnects This constantly disconnects whether connected via eSata, USB 2.0 or USB 3.0. Is there a firmware update available? It is populated with two identical WD Enterprise class 4.0 TB drives model # WD4000F9YZ. I've tried all of the above connectivity options and the problem remains. I've tried locating the drives on different 'shelves' inside the drive and using only a single drive in the enclosure and the disconnect problem remains. Any help would be sincerely appreciates as this has been a long-term issue making the enclosure unacceptably unreliable. The O/S is Windows 10 Pro 64-bit version 21H1 O/S build 19043.1165 with all the latest patches as of this date 09/13/21. Please help!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Turn it on, nothing happens. Turn it off and back on, maybe it will detect, turn it off try again. 1 - 3 tries, every time. It also disconnects, and won't reconnect, so I am constantly turning it off and on. It has 4 identical WD RED NAS drives in perfect shape. Works great when it decides to connect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very impressive enclosure (mostly) Bought this about 2.5 years ago, it was initially problematic but I was able to demonstrate to the startech technical support that it was defective and they shipped me a new one which works flawlessly. I did have to stop the disks spinning down though as it caused USB bus disconnects and as I'm using it as a raid 5 array I need it to be 100%. I am definitely very please with it as it's way cheaper than a NAS, I have it mounted on a Raspberry PI4B with UAS enabled and it's really fast, I have measured 30mb /sec write speeds on my 4 Toshiba P300 3TB array.
