Rated 5 out of 5 by from The one that started it all Just learned about the tool registration and now Im catching up on it. I bought this in 2014 - warranty long since gone. This drill has been in my tool box since a day my compressor went and died on the side of the road. I bought it for one reason - I needed a drill immediately. I have dropped it, smashed it, accidentally hit it, let it bump around in a service truck, installed a couple thousand fifth wheel hitches and bumper hitches with it and it has NEVER failed me. This drill was so great my wife stole it, so I bought her one and it has been the home one as well since 2016. They make a brushless one so these are far cheaper now - and the only reason I wouldn’t buy it again is because I would go brushless. This was the tool that started it all and the tool I remember when I look to DeWalt for my new electric tool purchases.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My first Dewalt product! I purchased this drill many years ago for DIY and garage use before my professional days. My first Dewalt product! It stays at home now as a back-up after replacing the brushes after years of use. I wouldn't ask of it what I expect from my Atomic or Hammer drill nut it honestly never let me down until the brushes went (again, after YEARS) The physical durability of this thing is primarily what started my obsession with the Black and Yellow, this thing hit the garage floor many times and even took a 2 story fall onto concrete with no more than a scuff. Probably.not the best option for hard core daily use but for someone starting out or needing a drill around the house that will likely last them a decade under light use its a great buy especially when found with the compact bundle.

Now the torque selector is stuck in drill mode rendering it useless for driving in screws properly. I've reached out to Dewalt so we'll see what happens. I'm very disappointed and expected a lot more quality from dewalt.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good power, terrible features My two previous DeWalt cordless drills had molded-in bit holders that were extremely useful. Not on this model. There are mounting points that must be more expensive to manufacture than just putting the holders directly on the drill, but you have to buy the holders separately. And the light... they are so ashamed of the design that they Photoshopped all of the product photos of the drill in use. What you can't see in the faked pictures is that there is a bright area near your work surface and a dark shadow cast by the chuck. What you can't see when you're using the drill is the spot where the bit touches the surface you're drilling... because there is glare all around it from the light but no light on that spot. After adding aftermarket bit holders and covering the light with electrical tape, I'm hoping this will be as good as the 18V drill I had for the last 10 years. This is probably a 3-star tool as it stands, but I'm dropping to 1 star because DeWalt continues to mislead people with the faked product photos.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great alternative to brushless I have used this drill for both medium duty commercial work and now as my go to home shop drill. I origionally purchased it for marine work drilling aluminum and a variety of lumber. I got it over the brushless due to price to live in my truck and it now lives in my home shop after the company upgraded to brushless. I have had it for about 3 years now and it has been a work horse. It is heavier and larger than the brushless and I have notice dit has a little less power under load. It does also use battery up faster than the brushless. That being said it always does what I need it to and I would purchase it again. I have noticed that the chuck sometimes slips on larger drill bits when drilling without a pilot hole in wood say 3/8" and above. I haven't noticed this with the brushless at all and the newer brushless seem to lock down a little tighter. This isn't a huge issue just can be annoying at times. Overall I have been pretty happy with this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Will not hold a charge I have the DCD771 for less than a year. When I first used it, the drill/driver was exactly what I needed. I let it sit for a couple of months, found that the batteries were dead, and discovered that they no longer hold a charge. I contacted DeWalt customer service online by live chat and Sherri was fantastic! They are sending a new battery and charger (she believes it may be the charger). I will respond in a week and let you know how they performed. I did notice that the charger is built in China and the batteries are built in Korea, and they have a sloppy/loose fit, which seemed odd to me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Found it! I found this drill in a ditch during the spring thaw today. Has obviously been here a while as the chuck was rusted in place. A little work and I got it going. Battery still held a charge. I’d say I got excellent value for this though I did dock it a star because I had to work to get the chuck loose. Why can’t tools I find in the ditch work perfectly the first time?

I thought- these tools are too small, they cannot do the heavy fastening work that needed to be done (6 inch lag bolts and 3.5 inch deck screws into treated lumber. Boy was I surprised, no problem at all. Super powerful and fast- blew my Ryobi cordless tools away! Made me ditch my old tools and get the Dewalt set and could nit be more pleased. Keep up the good work- the LED lights on the tools are the best.

This is a big upgrade from the Dewalt 18v drill. Has a ton of power, battery lasts way longer than the 18v and is lite weight. Would recommend to a friend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Burns up to easily My dcd771 has been a great go to drill at home just doing random projects here and there but I had to take it to work and "bore" out some holes in some 1/2 uhmw with a 1 3/4 spade bit and after only a couple holes the drill started smoking quite a bit. Drilling everything 1/2 and under has given me no problems and it has no problem running 3" long torq screw into boards, it just can't keep up with a bigger spade bit I guess.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light-weight, reliable I've owned the DCD771 for a few years: reliable, easy to use, no problems. This has been for medium workload, used often at home, shared with two sons. I'm about to buy another for a gift, but will increase the battery amperage to the next level up, just because. I agree with other users that the headlight does not really illuminate the target. Not a real concern: I use a work light. This is a very good tool for the price.

It works great and the power I get from the fully charged battery is perfect for most jobs. It never lets me down and I take it to work sites where I know I can depend on its power and reliability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excelent DIY drill I bought this drill about 10 months ago to replace a 14.4V Dewalt drill that I had for 15 years. This drill provides all the power I need and is much lighter. The chuck is easy to use and locks nicely. The 2.0 Amp batteries are easy to swap and provide adequate work time and charge rapidly. The only draw back is that the light is placed such that a shadow is cast by the chuck on the work. Within a month of sharing this drill with my wife I was compelled to buy a second one for her.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from VERSATILE and RELIABLE This beautiful little powerhouse grabbed me over a year ago and I continue to be amazed and in love with the versatility of the DCD771 1/2” cordless drill/driver. Always charged and always ready the DCD771 is seemingly, ready for any new task I invent: last week I purchased a 1” sharpening tool, inserted it in the drill/driver, and touched up my lawn mower blade. Later I removed the blade and completely sharpened it. I also stir and mix paint, polish metal, wax and buff wood, and clean metal. However, the major function of my DCD771 is drilling and driving with projects. Changing drills and drivers is simple. The two power levels are nice. Settings for the appropriate torque are easy and convenient and the trigger variable speed is a welcome feature. Although minor and have nothing to do with the overall efficiency of this machine, there are two items that could be addressed: 1. Clips or inserts could be installed at the rear and below the grip so changing drivers could be more convenient. 2. The light on the DCD771 is useful, however, I find it stays on too long and more importantly, the barrel of the drill/driver casts a shadow that obscures vision in very low light conditions. There you have it. Would I buy DCD771 again? Without question. I can and do recommend the DCD771 without reservation. Get one...or two and give the second to your significant other.

Chuck tightens up correctly, but after using for a minute or 2, the chuck comes lose. Had 18v drill/driver and never had this problem. One of the tools that I bought had the bolt that holds the chuck in stripped.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cheap I replaced a Dewalt drill/driver that I had for years. It came with 2 batteries, in a really nice plastic specialized case that protected the items. This one comes in a flimsy cloth case. My first one had the basic bits so that I could use as a screwdriver. This one comes with nothing. Does not look like the picture. It is heavier and not really anticipating it will last the 15 years I had the first one. CHEAP!!!!!!!!!!!! I will never buy Dewalt again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Besure To Check Battery's Date Code Dec. 4, 2019 I purchased the DeWalt Drill kit which included two DeWalt 20V MAX* Lithium Ion batteries. I used the drill here and there to drill a hole and to drive in screws. Fast forward to early Feb. 2020, I fully charged both batteries. With a fully charged battery, I drilled a 1/2" hole using a DeWalt bit, I needed to drill three holesl. About half way of my drilling the second hole, the DeWalt drill came to a halt. I pulled out of the half drilled hole, pulled on the drill's trigger and nothing happened. I changed out the battery and pulled back the trigger, the drill worked, so I completed the second hole and just about finished the third hole when the drill stopped again. I let the drill rest then I finally was able to drill the hole. I called DeWalt ask them to send out two new batteries. The DeWalt angent said before I can do that, I need to know the date code on both batteries and explained to me how to locate that code. I read to him the code of both batteries. He said, I need you to send me your proof of purchase because, we guarantee our batteries for 3 years, and since the date code you gave me is over the 3 year mark. I emailed the agent my reciept for the drill kit. Now I am waiting for the batteries. So make sure you check the date code which is located on top of the battery, it'll have the year in full followed by some other numbers with dashes. Check the code(s) before your purchase or before you leave the store to make sure the battery(s) date are concurrent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It looks nice , but with limited use,.... Bought this drill/drive last year to have around the house to do simple house hold repairs, nothing heavy. Used it a total of 4 times, the last time it was used the clutch/chuck mechanism gave out. When drilling the bit came loose, when tightening the bit in the chuck , it would make a stripping sound. I don't trust this device to preform safety. It must have a design flaw. Dewalt might want to re-engineer its design. Don't invest in this tool.

I was even able to finish my first major solo project - a standing workbench. Incredibly comfortable to use, and veratile enough to handle a lot of projects. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Started on fire Received one of these in a package, drill, impact, 2x batteries, charger and USB battery adapter. Use of the drill was minimal and light. Small pilot holes in wood. Changed gate latches. Odd fence board. That sorta thing. I’ve always kept it in the carry bag, stored in the house closet when not in use. I went to wire wheel a piece of metal before paint prep, an the drill started smoking and started on fire. Some sort of electrical issue in the motor by where the flames originate from. (No, it not the electric motor sparking. It actually billows smoke with flames! I can reproduce this effect, alas you don’t support video upload. Poor workmanship / design IMO. I’ll be going with another brand (US city name) next purchase. I have that brand at work and they have never let me down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Owner I purchased four Dewalt 20 volt brushless drills. I have found that the chucks on all of the drills are unable to grip a drill bit or any tool with a round shaft. The drill motor has good torque but it can’t be put to use because the chuck is slipping on the tool or bit.

Very easy to use, easy to handle meaning on the lighter side not that heavy weighted type of drill but still packs a nice little punch on the power. Easy to switch out the bits and charges pretty fast. Battery also lasts quite a bit of days from the last charge. Highly recommended. I absolutely love dewalt tools. I have been using them since theor drills had cords attached. Great quality products durable and lasts forever if you take care of them correctly.

Seems to be more powerful and has been holding up pretty well even when using a wired brush wheel for rust removal, which is pretty demanding on it. I bought it for $100 and came with two batteries, can't beat that.

Seem to use it every day!! Two fast-charging batteries keep things going for long jobs (e.g. screwing deck boards).

From screwing up new siding, to putting in new windows to floors. This drill has never let us down. It is very easy to change out a tip. Simply charge it up and you get hours out of the battery. We loved it so much we purchased some to give away as gifts. Do yourself a favor and add one to your tool collection.

Since then I've completed my basement and this poor guy has gone through every abuse you can think of. It's been dropped off of ladders, smashed by debris and run in the dirtiest conditions. It keeps coming back for more. I keep a fresh battery up at my work bench and when called upon a task it's ready to go.

I liked the fact the drill had 2 batteries and came with a very useful canvas case which held the drill batteries charger and my drill. and screw driver bits. It had been working exceptionally well until 1 month ago. The chuck began slipping intermittently...was using it to raise/lower the stabilizers for a 19' travel trailer which I consider to be fairly light use. Now the batteries (both do to hold a charge. I note other reviewers have had the same concern. I have not yet contacted Dewalt...it's a Saturday and not certain what support I would get after 21 months of ownership. New batteries are the same cost of new drill kit...will give Dewalt one more try, but with some trepidation.

I did it with no help becuase of how easy the drill made the job. I recommend this tool to all my friends and family. Can’t wait to get more DeWalt power tools!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compact light weight. Upgraded from an 18V Dewalt to get more versatility and power. Kind of disappointed. When I'm drilling and let off the trigger, the brake causes the drill to fall out no matter how tight I tighten the chuck. Otherwise pleased with the purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT DRILL- ESPECIALLY FOR THE PRICE Similar to other DeWalt batteries, these batteries should have a plastic battery protector to make sure the terminals are protected. Instructions warn about not having terminals come in contact with metal- screws, etc. But especially with the drill & batteries carried in a nice zippered pouch, it's easier for these type of objects to come in contact with each other. "Shorting battery terminals may cause burns or a fire". There are a couple of small zip lock bags for the batteries, but from my GREAT experiences with DeWalt products, I found this to be very "un-DeWalt" like.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I can't imagine a better bang for your buck So, in 2014 my wife and I bought our first house ever - a 1947 ranch home that had not been updated since the Nixon administration. Being raised in a generation of HGTV pipe dreams crossed with an unfounded belief that YouTube can teach anything, we decided to take the plunge and go full-on Fixer-Upper on this thing. We were not the smartest. I barely owned a picture-hanging kit, let alone the tools needed to take a house to the studs and back. On the very first day of renovations, I made a discovery that shook me to my core - construction work is not that much fun if you are trying to do it all with a hand screwdriver. Once again, we weren't the smartest. I decided that if I was going to be a real construction man, I needed a drill. So I went down to the local home improvement store and looked for something in my price range. I found this drill/driver kit. It was in the sub-$100 category, and came with two batteries. I knew nothing about power tools, and the fact that it came with two batteries was the sole reason I bought it. Over the next year, I abused that drill. I used 4" hole saws and ran through thousands of drywall screws. I mixed mortar and grout and concrete. I repaired decks and hung doors. The drill never budged. Almost 5 years later, we've now renovated 3 houses and have completed countless projects from bookshelves to beds to beams. This drill has been my right-hand man the entire time. It's never hinted at dying, it's never lost an ounce of power, and it's always been 100% reliable and predictable. It is still, to this day, the only drill I own. About 2 weeks ago, I went and bought a set of new batteries as mine had started to lose charge and power a bit quicker than they used to. With the new ones in place the drill perked back up to its old self and acted like it was brand new. I ABUSED IT FOR 4 AND A HALF YEARS BEFORE I NEEDED NEW BATTERIES. That's twice as long as the average life of my smartphones. I genuinely couldn't be more thrilled with this drill. I can't fathom getting a better bang for your buck, and it has made me completely become a DeWalt 20V MAX fanboy. I have never purchased another brand of power tool because of my experience with this drill.

I have the full power 20v hammer drill and it is a real workhorse but it is heavy and fairly large. I needed a lighter kit for working overhead for extended periods of time. This drill IS IT. Compact, capable, light and very reliable. GREAT addition to the set.

The motor sounds strange and drill stops spinning very hard with some banging/grinding noise. Thought that was weird for a Dewalt. Upon first use, the drill smelled funny and went up in smoke on the 12th fastener. I figured it was a bad apple in the cart and went back to Lowes to exchange it for a replacement. Well, low and behold I get home and this drill started smoking on the third fastener. The fasteners were nothing more than typical 3" deck screws. 2 drills in 2 days?? If this drill can't handle a 3" fastener, then someone at Dewalt needs to lose their job. Piece of junk!!!!

I use it for DYI projects and around the house repairs and she's never failed to complete the task at hand. Both batteries still hold full charges and function as new, though they, and the drill are starting to look a little weathered. After I sent it back to be repaired 2 weeks ago because the low gear failed in one month and the motor was fried in five months, the repair center sent it back to me with the low gear still broken. I called Dewalt back today and now they are going to send me a new drill.I will try to update when my new drill arrives and I have had the opportunity to use it.

When I'm drilling and I let go of the trigger the brake causes the drill to fall out no matter how tight I tighten the chuck. I also tried maybe slowing down on the trigger but that made it worse. I purchased the same model on 6/2/19 to see if this is a common problem. Lo and behold the same issue and this one is brand new. Not sure what the problem is, but this seems to be a poorly made drill and I'm surprised that it carries the DeWalt name. This may be my last DeWalt purchase, totally shocked by the quality.

Wow, what I purchased? My second thought to return and redeem the money, is this useful or no? Then i asked the store associate, is there any charger for DeWalt batteries? Answer was, that I have to purchase a Cordless Compact drill, then I will have both, the battery and a charger included. My question to the DeWalt, If I have another tools to work with, why should I buy another tool, in order to have battery and charger for Hoodie I've purchased, why don't you supply separately to store where we purchase this hoodie? Not cool, at all. It's not a way to sell more product. Anyway, I've end up with a good tool, with a better deal, when I've purchased these two Items, and much cheaper, than hoodie with batteries and charger included. jsut spent a bit time to figure it out, which way to deal with this problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best drill I have ever owned I bought this drill a month ago and have put it through the grinder so to speak. I use it almost daily and it hasn't missed a beat. The compact and versatile design make it easy to use in tight spaces. At one point I forgot to put my spare battery on the charger so had to use my backup for a while. The backup (harbor freight) literally caught on fire while it was attempting to do the same job as the dewalt was doing. The job required a lot of torque, speed and power but the dewalt performed excellent while Harbor Freight proved the point that nothing compares to Dewalt.

Recently it doesnt tighten down or loosen , but ill get it repaired and go at it again. I will buy the combo set again once these go out if they ever do. Stay building people its good for the soul. I went through both batteries in 1.5 hrs and have been unable to charge since then. Worse performance I have ever seen.

I don't think the other ever charged and I didn't catch it in time to get a replacement under warranty. If you buy, check both batteries right away and continue to make sure they charge within your return window.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Upgrade I was using a Ridgid drill to help a friend assemble a project that involved a LOT of screws. He had a DeWALT drill and I noticed I had to change batteries frequently while his ran strong. After a while, my batteries couldn’t keep up with his and we ended up alternating jobs and using the same drill. That’s when I decided to jump over to DeWALT. I started with an 18V and had it for about a year when the 20V came out. The grip is very comfortable for long jobs. The torque settings are spot on for any job and the two-speed gearbox and variable speed trigger will handle any job you throw at it. Batteries? They last a long time and if you buy a couple of 5mah batteries, there isn’t a job you can’t handle! People complain about the price, but for the amount of time you’ll own this, it pays for itself. If you go cheap, you’ll go home! #DEWALTTOUGH

The battery is tiny in comparison, yet has the most power output. The worklight is perfect when working in those areas with low lighting. The variable speed options is amazing. I'll recommend this drill to everyone I meet that uses power tools for the rest of my life. I absolutely love it!

It has come to the point that the batteries will not hold a charge. With the price of new batteries ($100), I decided to treat myself to a new drill. The old drill still runs like the day I bought it. I can only believe that I will be just as happy with the new one. At this point, with 10 years prior experience with a DeWalt drill, I would not even consider buying another brand. Tough and dependable drills! Love DeWalt!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Total piece of junk! I have had this piece of junk for just over 5 months now. About a month after I purchased it the low gear gave out in it. I should have returned it then it has struggled doing basic drilling tasks to the point of smoking and getting very hot. Finally today it gave up completely!! I have other Dewalt cordless power tools and I have not had any problem with them, in fact I'm impressed with the torque and power they deliver. I'm not sure what is wrong with this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DeWalt Has the Torque Had to replace gutter hangers & tried my Black & Decker cordless, well it was torqueless. Asked a neighbor carpenter what to buy he said get DeWalt, so I did 2 torque settings did the trick using screw gutter hangers that needed torque to get through the aluminum gutter & facia & into the wood porch frame. DeWalt worked like a champ. Best bang for the buck got 2 DeWalt units special on line with Amazon for the price of one at local Ace store. Glad I shopped.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Almost perfect I was able to install over 300 galvanized screws into a privacy fence on a single charge, and the drill performed flawlessly. Better still, the weight was light enough to make the entire project a breeze. The drawback is not having a GREEN indicator light to let the user know the battery is fully charged at a glance. I also don't like the fact that the charger seems not to recognize a partially charged battery to restore it to its full potential, just as anyone using a rechargeable cell phone does every day. In other words, the charger arrangement lacks what is commonplace throughout the world of electronic devices, something that should have been a no-brainer and a given. By not having a green indicator light that offers a "it's ready to be used," it confuses what ought to be simple and straight forward. The overall drill, however, kicks butt!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Will not hold a charge I have the DCD771 for less than a year. When I first used it, the drill/driver was exactly what I needed. I let it sit for a couple of months, found that the batteries were dead, and discovered that they no longer hold a charge. I contacted DeWalt customer service online by live chat and Sherri was fantastic! They are sending a new battery and charger (she believes it may be the charger. I will respond in a week and let you know how they performed. I did notice that the charger is built in China and the batteries are built in Korea, and they have a sloppy/loose fit, which seemed odd to me.

I have been unable to change the battery without help or a big struggle and a lot of pain with my old drill.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The power is phenomenal. I've had my 18 volt Dewalt drill for 10 + years, so just recently it started showing its age. So I did some research on the DeWalt website and decided to go with the 20 volt Max and the power is like no other drill I've ever owned it is awesome. Now I think it's time to upgrade my 18 volt Dewalt skill saws to the new 20 volt. Thanks DeWalt you have awesome tools, keep up the good work...I will always be a loyal customer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the drill. Batteries not so much. I bought this drill package a number of years ago. At one point it was used often. I noticed the batteries started having a shorted use span. Now they won't even take a charge. I know batteries don't last forever but 4 years is a little short considering the price of replacements. I went to purchase a new battery and nearly passed out at the price. A two battery pack is 99 dollars. That's what I paid for the whole package of drill, 2 batteries, charger and soft bag 5 years ago. One single battery is 90 dollars. I am by far not the smartest person in the world but this doesn't add up.

This drill has outperformed any other drill I have ever owned and yes I’ve owned Milwaukee. Weather I’m drilling through Steel or wood, this tool makes it a breeze. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this Drill/Driver I have the 36v kit which is great. But for the price it was just as cheap to buy this to have extra batteries for the inflator I previously purchased. Surprisingly I found myself liking the 20v tool. Especially for smaller, quick jobs.

Eight years ago I had a need to go cordless and I chose to buy Ryobi. They drill and batteries (ni-cad) finally went south and I upgraded to Dewalt. Looking forward to using this kit around the house and it will get used well. Can't wait to upgrade the batteries. Next tool will be the cordless 5 1/2 inch or 6 1/2 inch circular saw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DeWalt DCD771 drill I have owned this drill for 2 years along with a Rigid drill. Rigid has a lifetime repair warranty and I had to send it back for repair. The DeWalt drill runs great and does heavy duty drilling for the homeowner. Long battery life. It is a great drill to have around the home.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Could not Recommend This is one of my worst buys from DeWalt. The first one I bought had to be returned as it was DOA. The second one has lasted about 2 months and its so difficult to use, its pretty useless. WHY? The chuck is made of plastic! I should have paid more attention when I purchased it. We have to use channel locks to turn the chuck just to get a screwdriver bit out. Its really unsafe to use to be honest with you. While at walmart I noticed even the cheap black and Decker has a metal chuck. I am just a farmer, and also work a full time job so the drill only sees occasional use on the farm. Dewalt.. you let us down with this plastic chuck.

Now a year and a half later it only works when it wants to. This is the 3rd DeWalt hand power tool that I have purchased and has failed. Also, when you release the trigger it has a lovely habit of dropping the bit.

The only drawback I have found is the fact that one of the included batteries has very little useful life from full charge. I will contact DeWalt and determine if this can be corrected or exchanged under warranty. The included light is convenient in tight spots, but would be more useful if the light was more focused on the drills' target.

The battery life is great and the torque and efficiency is incredible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this tool This is the go to drill/driver (one of several) in my home shop. The battery life is very good and so is the power. I like then when im doing a big job, i can use the 3ah battery from my 20v saw and not have to worry about running out of charge. The only time i use a corded drill/driver anymore is when drilling for pocket screws because the higher rpm helps. My one complaint is that the brake stops it so fast when you release the trigger (safety feature i guess) that sometimes the chuck's inertia causes it to overrun and release the bit.
