Rated 5 out of 5 by from 70-300mm lens I’m able to take photos sitting in the top of the stands while grandchildren show their cattle in the arena. The closer I zoomed to 300mm the more noise. Lens is heavier than expected. Overall, good starting telephoto lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Upgrade From The Previous Version We bought this for the wife's EOS T4i, which is pretty old, but still a fine camera @ 18mp. She has arthritis and can't lug our heavier 70-300mm L around so we were hoping the new EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM II would be lighter and fit the bill, and indeed it does. Besides being a pound +/- lighter than the L, but a few ounces heavier than the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, image quality is superb considering its price range. Although it is all plastic except for the metal mounting, which feels solid and attaches easily to your camera, the overall feel of the lens is solid and well made. It has one low dispersion lens in its 17 element 12 group configuration. Contrast and color are amazing and I find myself doing less saturation adjustment when processing RAW files. It has a 9 blade circular aperture, so bokeh is really smooth and lends to the background. Autofocus is faster than either of my L (70-300mm & 100-400) lenses, locks on so fast you don't even notice it, and is quiet. Image stabilization truly is 4 stops and I've taken shots on my 7D mark ii in very low light using a shutter of 1/25 and there is hardly any blur at all, very impressive. I like the full time manual focus, even though you have to half depress the shutter button, but that makes sense anyway because it engages IS. For us, the digital distance / length / shake LCD is a waste, you can't see it anyway while looking through the viewfinder or shooting, although maybe in live view, but we seldom use that. I can see where someone who wants to manually focus using it would appreciate it. I do kind of like the field of view (FOV) conversion readout, although I don't pay any attention to those numbers. This is a very nice lens and recommend it if you just aren't ready to move up to L glass. This version "II" takes 67mm filters instead of 58mm like its predecessor and a different lens hood, the ET-74b. At this writing, there are no third party hoods available, but I have bought and do recommend the the "Genuine ET-74b" even though it has no felt flocking. I will add that I have thoroughly tested this lens on the EOS T4i and EOS 7D mark II and it is a keeper for sure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Image Stabilization on this lens is UNBELIEVABLE!! Had this lens for a day and haven't have much time to play with it, however, the first thing I did was test the IS. Judge for yourself but these pics were taken handheld, 300mm, 100 ISO, f/5.6. The first pic was at 1/50th of a second, the second at 1/400th sec. Zoom in on the siping on the tire and you can barely see a difference. I think it's pretty outstanding for handheld @ 1/50th. I've always heard that your shutter speed should be higher than your focal length or you will get camera shake. Not in this case. I can't wait to test it out more and will update when I do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bad luck or a QC problem?? I bought my first lens a week ago and it came defective. The IS sounded like marbels in side the lens and there was a white mark or flaw on the inside second lens down. I sent it back and received a replacement yesterday. The replacement also had the flaw on the lens. I am waiting for a return label to send the second lens back to Canon. I am giving up on this lens and I ordered a EF 70-200mm 4L. I guess my question is were was QC when the lens was made? For me to get two lenses with the same flaw it got me thinking how many more lenses are out there?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Functions as advertised Just received as a birthday gift. It is very compatible with my Rebel T6. First excursion was in Nassau this past weekend. I am a novice photographer. Enjoyed learning the general lens options and operation. Result is that I came away with a number of dynamic shots. Looking forward to more photographic adventures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not bad! Not a bad lens. The auto focus, as always with Canon cameras and lenses, functions perfectly. Images are nice and sharp even through this lens not being image stabilized. I almost thought that due to its size I could use this lens while hand-holding the camera but I was wrong. Definitely use this lens on a tripod or monopod.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First class lens!!! With Canon cameras for 8 years. Bought this lens 2 months ago. Got surprised with sharpness after microadjust focus in my 80D and 7D MII. Is tack sharp, very fast focus, much better than previous edition. Shooting birds in flight now is a pleasure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Chip on front element I have tried to buy one of these through used or refurbished channels 5 different times. So far, I have been unsuccessful all 5 times in trying to get one that does not have a tiny chip out of the front element. It looks like a dust speck, but can't be removed. Looks to me like there is a quality control problem with this otherwise beautifully designed lens. Check carefully before you accept this lens. However, the autofocus is amazing, and the weight is just perfect for an outdoor zoom lens. The 100-400 L is fantastic, but if you want something much lighter, this is lens or the 70-200 IS 4.0L is what you want. This one is much less expensive than either of those.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Took Great photos when working I waited and waited for this to come into stock again at Best Buy. When the lens was working took great action photos. Then it randomly started shutting down. I would get a lens error then messages saying camera must shut down. Then the camera couldn't shut down or turn off so to the point that I had to take the battery out of the camera to restart it. I was so disappointed that I had to return it. Best Buy was out of stock again so couldn't even try another one to see if first was defective.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome lens for both full and crop frames I bought this lens and it takes awesome pictures on both my 6D and 90D. Under good light, I can not tell a difference in picture quality between this lens vs my 70-200 F4 L IS. and the extra reach to 300mm is very good to have. Plus the lens is lighter and I took it on my recent trip to Alaska and caught some great shots of Grizzly bears.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fine addition to my gear! I bought this lens because I wanted a smaller, lighter alternative to my 100-400mm L (a great lens, but big and heavy). Its image quality is close to the larger lens and it's easy to use, focusing well and quickly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lightweight easy to use. I purchased this lens because it filled a hole between my other lenses and most importantly because it is lighter then my 100 - 400 lens. This does make a difference to me being older when hiking. It is also smaller in size making it easy to handle that and the price make this a great lens in my opinion

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Lens Only L options in this zoom range are extremely heavy (and white. Not a fan of the colour or weight. Waited for this lens to be in stock and ordered. Used for a recent trip to Hawaii. Unbelievable picture quality and focus speed. Absolutely no noise during focus. Again, the quality and colour of the pictures are unreal. For the money, lower weight, and non stand out colour, this lens is worth every penny and then some. Truly impressed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible for the price! This lens is to die for when you're on a budget. I work in sports and couldn't afford the fancy lenses, so I bought this one just to have something with the zoom needed for proper sports photos and WOW! Sure there are little things here and there (sometimes slow to focus being the main one, with it being a lower quality lens, but I can get amazing photos from it and for the price those little quirks don't matter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Newer sometimes IS better! A very nice lens that I got about two months ago. I compared it to my old 70-200 L lens (over 12 years old) and I must say the quality of the photos are pretty much the same (when outdoors). Indoors we got a problem, because this lens only does f/5.6 at max zoom, so that is not much light. But when outdoors?! This lens is wonderful! [1] Very light weight [2] Affordable [3] SUPER fast and quiet focusing [4] Easy-to-use stabilization [5] only slight chromatic aberration

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value with the lens, one flaw I recently purchased this lens for a budget telephoto to bring on a photography trip up the Oregon Coast. I specifically chose this lens for the 200-300mm capabilities to capture distant subjects from the coastline (waves, rock formations, lighthouses, etc.. In my experience, this lens is great to capture close up shots of images at a slight distance, or scenery/landscapes at a great distance, for a moderate budget. Pros: Nice build, sleek, contemporary. Lightweight compared to other long range telephoto lenses and definitely a step up from other non "L" canon lenses. The ergonomics are great. Held up nicely in extreme coastal weather against wind, sea spray, etc (although a UAV filter was on to protect the front element). Image stabilization is first class, especially helpful at the long end of the zoom range. Auto-focus is lightning fast, almost to the point where you wonder if the AF is actually on because it was so fast it's hard to see it at work. The first day I used this lens, I actually found myself de-focusing the lens on purpose and then re-focusing to make sure it was happening. Excellent sharpness in the images, even at long distance wide open. At the short to medium range, the image quality is fantastic. Sharp, good contrast, natural saturation, just all around good quality. Cons: Full extended from about 220mm - 300mm the image quality starts to really lose contrast and saturation, at multiple apertures (although sharpness is still fine). Fully extended, the images at great distance had a "washed" look. Now, this can be corrected in post-processing by adjusting curves and adding contrast, but it can be meticulous to insure the finished photo doesn't look over-edited. I understand that using a UV filter or atmospheric conditions (haze, smog, etc) when shooting over a great distance can affect the contrast, but this lens in particular seems a bit more prone to it. With all of that being said, a 70-300mm focal range with incredible image stabilization, razor sharp photos, lightning fast auto-focus, and a great physical build with lightweight is 100% worth the purchase compared to the extra expensive L series lenses. Considering you can correct it's one major flaw in post processing, it's a great bargain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile Telephoto Zoom Lens at a Great Price Let me start by saying that I picked this lens up to replace the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III that came with my SL2 kit. The 75-300mm has no image stabilization, well documented problems with sharpness, and insane purple chromatic aberration. I opted to go with the refurbished EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM as a replacement and I'm glad I did. The lens arrived incredibly well packaged (not in the original box unfortunately, but who really cares?) and after a quick inspection, I could not tell that the lens was refurbished. There were no scratches, scuffs, or marks of any kind on the lens body and the front element was crystal clear with no scratches or chips. This lens has quickly become my absolute favorite lens because of the impressive image sharpness, little to no chromatic aberration, rock solid image stabilization, and snappy NANO USM focusing. It is incredible how quickly this lens finds focus and with the IS engaged I was able to take handheld pictures of waterfowl while standing on a dock during moderate winds. The IS compensated for the motion of the waves moving the dock, the wind pushing the camera, and my shaky hands at 300mm which is amazing. The NANO USM focusing is amazing when trying to get pictures of wildlife. It makes little to no sound when finding focus and locks on very quickly which can make all the difference when trying to get the shot. The 70-300mm focal length is fantastic on a cropped sensor (APS-C) camera like the SL2 because it changes the focal length to 112-480mm equivalent which gets right up to the action. Additionally the lens does a pretty good job of getting near macro shots at 300mm. Overall I think this is an excellent replacement lens for my Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III and I'm very pleased with the results. I look forward to using the lens for years to come and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quality telephoto zoom lens for their full frame or cropped sensor camera. Cannon really knocked it out of the park with this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great image stabilization. Nice for close-ups too With the image stabilization, it works well for distant shots, such as buildings, but also worked well for shooting flowers as the long focal length gave me a shallow depth of field. The lens is moderate weight, and is not too heavy even on an EOS M with an adapter. The LCD lens information display is clever, although I don't look at it too closely while busy shooting. The automatic conversion of focal length for a crop-sensor is nice. I do look at the camera shake amount to see how well I am holding the lens. This is a good quality product and a good value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just like brand new, exactly what I needed Bought it a few weeks ago, arrived very quickly, packaged carefully. Looks brand new, not a mark on it or any of the lens components. Needed to replace an old lens that died. Have used it daily in my work and it performs as you would expect from a Canon lens. No issues, performs as well as any new, unrefurbished Canon lens I own.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a great lens! I have been shooting more and more video and wanted something with greater reach that was not a several pound white lens. I have both 70-200L lenses and the 100-400L but really wanted something lightweight to just toss in the bag for every day use. This fits the bill perfectly. It is VERY sharp and half the weight and size of the above-mentioned lenses. I have been shooting a lot of music in dark clubs and at f5.6 and ISO6400 on either my C100 or 80D's this lens looks great. It is super fast to focus and is spot on. The LCD screen is useless to me, but the lens is excellent. With this and my 18-135 I can cover just about anything on my APS-C bodies. The bonus is that it works on my 5D3 as well! You will not regret buying this lens. If I am going out on a hike with a small package I would always choose this lens over my very heavy L lenses. On a cropped body the reach is equivalent to 480mm! If I was traveling I would take the 10-18, 18-135 and this lens and everything would be covered. Of course I have many of the fast primes for special events, but those three lenses would cover just about anything you needed to do. Happy shooting and go Canon. The best IMHO...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great IQ, solid build, well-finished, looks cool! APPEARANCE: This non-L lens looks great, is well finished, feels very solid, and has a new “modern” matte finish to it and looks, well, “very cool”. … FIT & FINISH: Frankly, it brings back memories of when Canon had only one grade of lens, (with the “FL” and “FD” mounts and each one was just as “professional” as the next. … IMAGE QUALITY: I did a side-by side comparison of 3 lenses with constant light and a tripod: 1) this EF 70-300 f4-5.6 IS II USM, 2) EF 70-200 f2.8 L IS II USM, and 3) the brand new EF 100-400 f4-5.6 L IS II USM. I was really impressed with the IQ of the images from this lens and as they compared with the images of the other two. … - at 100% the photo IQ was nearly indistinguishable but on all photos at all apertures (f4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16) the photos from this 70-300 were just slightly darker. - photos were sharp, well balanced, with no noticeable aberrations or distortions and good color rendition. - at 200%, the photos showed up some minor loss of definition . ... NEW IS WORKS GREAT: I handheld several shots with a 5D III and this lens including at f5.6, 1/60 at 300mm and then took the same photo on a tripod with a remote. No difference in sharpness. Very impressed. … BENEFITS AS A TRAVEL LENS: I bought this as a travel lens since the others were just too big and heavy. It’s half the weight and size of the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II USM and EF 100-400mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM lenses I have. This lens will easily fit in a “photographer’s vest” pocket and not look like you’re carrying a large weapon, or tip you over to one side. Obviously, it will free up more space in your camera bag, and be lighter for those persnickety airline (especially European) carry-on baggage weight restrictions. … Will I take this on a safari? Maybe not, as I’ll probably want my faster 2.8 telephoto or the longer reach of the superb 100-400 lens. But on a trip where I’m walking around, or having to go through airports, take trains and busses, etc., and where weight and size is very important, the lighter weight and smaller size is important. Or, if you don’t have a good zoom and your budget is creaking under the financial weight of the aforementioned alternatives, this lens will be a great choice - and not a “compromise lens” by any means. … CONS: mostly in accessories. a) MOST IMPORTANT: Only in the manual, and buried in the 3rd line of sub-notes on page ENG-22 does it say “EXTENDERS CANNOT BE USED WITH THIS LENS.” Nowhere on the website does it say that you can’t use an extender! So, this becomes a bit of a negative as a travel lens if you buy it, as I did, expecting to have the option of making it a 70-420mm lens. Canon- update your description! b) No lens hood. You have to order separately. Adds to the cost of the lens. c) Very minor but no case or even a slip cover. d) The 67mm lens means it won’t share filters with most of your other lenses in your bag; also adds to cost of ownership. … CONCLUSION: Fantastic quality lens, delivers sharp images with good color balance, and since it’s brand new, has all the latest design improvements. It looks and feels solid, has cool new features.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great new 70-300 tele-zoom Great all-around tele-zoom, and sharp. Not as bright to focus with as my 300 2.8, but it’s a lot smaller and lighter for everyday shots. A versatile addition to my gear. Easy to use, the fastest autofocus I’ve seen. No tripod collar, but this lens is so easy to handle, and with IS, it doesn’t need one. Bought this lens to supplement, not replace any other lenses, feel like I got a lot for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Average at best. This lens is fine for close ups on subjects less than 100 feet away. I have a cheaper nikon D3400 with a 75-300mm that takes way better closeups. I like taking photos of airplanes. This lens is useless for that purpose. I took the pics below with a nikon d3400 the kit with two lenses cost less than the Canon lens cost. So you could get a body and two lenses for the price of this lens. The last three pics are with my Canon 5D Mark iv. Each pic is labeled which lens. The photos speak for themselves. I have gotten better closeups with the 24-105mm lens that came with the 5D.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hidden Gem Telephoto Zoom! I think this lens gets overshadowed by the L variant. I have owned the L version (and really liked it), but wanted something a bit lighter and a bit less flashy. Enter the 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS Mark II... The AF is blindingly fast! I mean this lens focuses and locks on target faster than you can blink! The Nano USM truly performs! I have found my images to have very nice colors and contrast, and very good sharpness. Although not an L lens, the back of the lens has a sealed rear element, which does a fantastic job of keeping dust out of the lens. The lens is light, but no too light, and feels solid in construction. The zoom ring is nicely damped, and turns just as smooth as the L lens. Tracking on my 6D II with this lens has been superb! My keeper rate percentage when photographing sports or wildlife is easily in the upper 90s. The Image Stabilization is just perfect. Hand-held shots at 300mm are a breeze! Overall, this lens is a fantastic value! Fast, fast, fast AF with sharp and rich colorful images, superb Image Stabilization, and all in a relatively compact and solidly made body.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great and precise autofocus I own it for a week and i have a lot of fun. Great focus, accurate tracking, pic quallity is good. I use it for fast tracking, birds in flight and wildlife. One thing that can be improved is the contrast and bit more sharpness on full zoom, but that's easily corrected in post processing software, PS or similar

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bang for the Buck!! I bought this lens almost a year ago .. It's built solid (even though it's plastic has a good feel, and takes amazing photo's. The auto focusing speed of the lens is truly amazing! It focuses almost as fast as your eyes! Very smooth when shooting video. I've compared the pictures to those taken with my 70-200 f/4 L IS, which in my opinion is one of the sharpest lenes out there .. and it holds it's own! Very little chromatic aberration vibrant colors and very sharp. The LCD screen provides useful information, but I don't use it much. I've never used the 100-400 L IS II and I wouldn't expect this lens to be of that caliber. It's not weather sealed and made of metal like the L lenses .. but I don't shoot in extreme weather anyway so that doesn't matter. It's a consumer lens, not a pro lens!! What you have here is a very good lens, that's not heavy, takes beautiful pictures, all at a great price point. I'm not a pro or anything .. but I think this lens is a steal at this price ... well worth the investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens at a reasonable price This is the best lens I've ever owned. OK, so I don't own the 100-400, but little brother here is only a quarter of the price. It benefits from the latest IS and AF technology, and the optics are superb. I wouldn't even consider any of the other Canon 300 zooms, not even the L, and the low-end 75-300 lacks IS. For me, this replaces the EF-S 55-250, which is also an excellent lens, but the 70-300 has better optics, IS, AF, and a little more reach. I use it on a APS-C camera, so I don't know how it does in the corners on a full-frame detector, but on the crop detector it is excellent, very sharp, very little distortion, and very low aberration. It is reasonably compact and light weight, which makes it great for hiking/birding/wildlife/etc.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast focus and great image stabilization Bought it and have had a chance to use it in a bowling alley. The image stabilization is allows you to lower shutter speeds to keep the iso to prevent harsh iso noise.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy operation Received the lens just in time for a trip to the Oregon Coast. I had read some reviews on focus problems so I shot some landscape shots and downloaded to my iPad to check for camera shake or focus problems. I was very pleased with all of the shots that ranged from the zoom length of 70 to 300. Very pleased with this lens and recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent reasonably priced lens I purchased this lens to replace an aging EF 70-300mm f 4-5.6 IS USM which had served me well but was beginning to search for focus and had become a bit noisy. My photography field is nature which requires quick, sharp focus. The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM is a more than adequate replacement. It is lighter and more compact than my old lens, the focus is quick, photos are sharp with excellent color regardless of the lighting. I have a wide selection of Canon lenses including three of the "L" series and with both extenders. The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM is almost always mounted on the camera that I carry with me at all times while I am outdoors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific performance Did a lot of research trying to decide what zoom lens I wanted. Think I picked a winner. Went out a few days ago for testing. I didn't have much time so my shooting was hand held. Ordinarily I shoot off a tripod but my photos came out excellent. Well built lens feels good in my hands , very solid and really quick focus. Yes I picked a winner. Also I have to include that the telephone sales support team are absolutely great

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful high-resolution zoom I read a lot of reviews for zooms in this focal length, and wanted something that would offer more than 200 or 250mm for a EOS 7D Mark II camera, but without a large cash outlay. This lens has nearly as good resolution as an L-series in the same focal lengths. I was also OK with medium-speed aperture, because the application is daylight location fashion shoots, smaller views from distance, as well as astrophotography of the moon.
