Know your gear

This lens is a highly practical medium telephoto lens with superb delineation and portability. Images are sharp and clear at all apertures. Through computer simulations, the lens has been designed to give beautiful background blur. Since the front lens group does not rotate during focusing special filter effects are not affected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great LensPurchased this lens for my Rebel XT and didn't use it very much. Recently upgraded my camera body to EOS 77D and put this lens on it and now I'm back to taking pictures again. Does a great job & quick focus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Lens - Mega Bang for Your Buck! This lens is a joy to use. Very rapid focus, tack-sharp images and decent build quality. At f1.8 image quality is very good with wonderful bokeh. I use this lens mostly indoors to shoot available light portraits. If you're torn between this lens and the Canon 50mm f1.4 I would choose this one for a couple of reasons. First, this lens uses a Ring Ultrasonic Motor, which simply stated is the best of the best. The 50mm f1.4 uses the extra-small Micro USM, and while that's a much better motor than what's in the 50mm f1.8 II, it's still not as durable as what's found in the 85mm f1.8. Second, this lens gives the photographer a comfortable working distance. I use a Rebel T3i and found that the 50mm is great for full body shots, but for portraits you have to get close, really close. If you shoot portraits close-up and tight then the 50mm may be a bit too short. My only complaint about the 85mm f1.8 is that a lens hood is not included.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great low price lensBought this Lens at the end of my canon rebel XSI's shooting days. Was put on my 7d mark i most of the time and gave good quality photos for portraits. Now with the 5d mark iii I feel it is being fully utilized. You should only buy a 1.2 if you are strictly going to shoot at 1.2, otherwise this is a great lens to shoot wide open and even narrow. Focal length is great for not distorting the subjects and adds enough bokeh to the image.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favorite portrait lensI use a 5D MKII, and most of my lenses are top of the line L series. But when it's time for an indoor portrait without a flash, I usually reach for my EF 85 1.8.It has great image quality and aperture, in a small and light package. The auto focus is silent, accurate, and quick. Superb bokeh. This lens is similar to the EF135 L, but smaller, cheaper and has a more useful focal length (at least for me.) It easily fits in a jacket pocket, balances the camera perfectly, and the price is right.I rarely miss IS at this aperture and focal length. You can't go wrong with this one!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most-Bang-For-The-BuckIt's a must for all Canon DSLR / EOS User. For the past 4 years, this lens is the most brilliant tools in my lens line up. No matter what the occasion are, vacation or commercial shot, fashion or children, this lens pays it all. Almost all of my masterpiece session were involving the EF 85mm f/1.8....You don't have to pay L series bucks to get their quality, this is it, the alpha & the omega in matter of lightweight prime lens.Amazingly sharp, even at maximum aperture ( I often selected 1 stop down from the max f available, about f/2 or f/2.8 to get maximum Image Quality )It's light, it doesn't spread too much attention like the rest of the L series, & it gets the job done! The only thing missing from this lens, is Image Stabilizer. But hey, it's light enough, I'm not too worry about it. If Canon decide to release the IS version of this lens, I'm the first person in line to order it.Anyone starting a new hobby or pros searching for value solution in their lineup, I recommend you to buy the EF 85mm f/1.8.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing lens for the moneyIf you don't want to, or can't afford Canons 85mm 1.2L lens, but want an 85mm, this lens is perfect. For what you pay, this lens delivers amazing performance. The bokeh this lens produces is creamy good. The autofocus is surprisingly fast and accurate when shooting fast moving subjects, even when coupled with the 5D Mark II. It is quite a bit smaller and lighter than the 85mm 1.2L. The build quality is still pretty solid though. It is also great in low light. If you are on a budget, you can not beat the performance and quality you get from this lens for the price.
