Barracuda Web Security Gateway 310 - security appliance - with 3 years Ener is rated3.63 out of5 by38.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullGood product. I like the web interface which is very similar to their spam filter web interface, claen and intuitive. Getting a customized exception or filter can be hell though if you want to access or block just one portion of a web site like a particular youtube video or just on area of craigs list. Fortunately the tech support is excellent and can remote access to debug such things for me. The reports are decent but are maybe a bit weak for singling out useage issues. Maybe I don't have the best set of reports set up as I am using mostly the default ones for weekly review. I wish there was a way for clients to easily notify me of "bad" blocks through the system since most of my users have trouble conveying what they were trying to hit when they got an error. The integration with active directory makes life much simpler and the cost is livable. . I will be renewing my license next year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullWe use 5 of these throughout our clients. They are easy to manage, and do their job very well. However, I do have one complaint. Bypassed or superusers, while allowed to browse without limits, their traffic is still logged. We have one client that does not like this idea and wanted us to uninstall the appliance. We had to solve the issue by creating a separate LAN for him.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullWe had a Web Filter 210 and found that it was preventing us from getting our full bandwidth. We have a 10mb connection to the internet and were only getting about 3mb down. After going to the 310 with better and more thruput we now get 9+ down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullI have been running the 310 for about 2 years. It has been a good investment, the initial cost to get in was more than I wanted to pay; but it has paid off in recovered productivity of my employees. The interface was a little hard to get use to, however techsupport was always very helpful to explain how to use and configure it. They have made some good upgrades on the interface gui that has made it more user friendly. I would recommend the product as it has been very reliable and low maintenance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullWe have an older model of the Web Filter 310 that has been serving us fairly well for the past 2 years or so, but we have recently had some hardware and software issues. Apparently the newer models (of the 310) have a higher throughput rating and more memory, so it's not too surprising. With the latest firmware we were constantly being spammed with warning logs about high throughput even though we were around half of the rated limit. It eventually led up to the point where we had to have a technician remote in and fix it.Recent issues aside the Web Filter 310 is a solid product that does what it advertises. One recommendation that I have is buy a product that is rated higher than the needs that you currently have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullBarracuda 310:* I purchased 5 of the 310 model and I've removed two of these off of our enterprise so far. They do the job pretty well but I had one too many firmware issues and the reporting is not very user friendly. But these two just kept dying on me and I had to do a factory reset, and setup all over again. I've replaced them with iPrism.* The other thing is, the fan on this guy is very loud. It's the loudest piece of unit in my server room at this point.* The interface and management features of the barracuda don't compare with iPrism. iPrism is more flexible, power full and has more stable firmware.* Barracuda at a few times has caused network issues on one of our locations. I would put it in bypass mode and things start to work normally, as soon as I put it on "Active" mode it would cause issues on the network. (Reboot would solve the issue but that's not the point)Eventually all of my Barracuda units will either be iPrism or replaced by SaaS type of filtering.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullI added two of these in an HA environment behind the perimeter firewall in my last position. They worked really well at gettting the things the main firewall passed as normal and they helped with load balancing as well I would use them again

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullWe have a Barracuda Web Filter 310 that is over 3 years old. It only has 512MB of memory, which I'm told is less than the new 310's they sell now. It is currently loaded with the latest firmware.Reporting is minimally acceptable, but it is difficult to get meaningful data. It is extremely slow generating reports, so experimenting with the reports is a very painful process. The reports seem to either not have enough detail to be useful (top 10 reports), or to have too much data (for example, every URL visited) which is also not useful.Configuring the basic filter settings is fairly easy. but setting up exceptions is much more difficult than it should be. They could improve the user interface greatly by making it more intuitive and faster. This unit is supposed to block malware, but it has failed to block users from downloading fake AV. We have had at least five computers get infected with fake AV in the last several months, all of which also had endpoint antivirus software, but the Barracuda should have blocked it at the gateway. Several of these computers could not be cleaned using Malwarebytes or the other usual tools, so we had to re-image them. The web filter has also had some serious malfunctions. Recently it had a bug that was causing the filtering to turn off an on every 15 minutes or so for over a month. We didn't realize what was going on until someone reported to a top executive in the company that users were getting to sites that should have been blocked. Barracuda tech support said that the problem has been fixed in the latest firmware, but the fact that it wasn't doing it's job for that long and did not give any warning or indication of the problem does not inspire confidence. The web console that is used to control the 310 ranges from somewhat slow to unbearably slow. At its worst, it takes over 5 minutes just to log on and another 5 minutes to refresh the screen every time I press a button or a tab. Several times the unit has brought all Internet access to a crawl. I have had to call tech support numerous times recently and there is almost always a long wait before getting through to a support person. After they remotely connect to the device, sometimes I have to sped hours on the phone with them while they try to figure out what's wrong with it. Rarely has it taken less than an hour when I have called them. The performance problems can be attributed to the amount of web traffic we have. We typically have about 40-50 simultaneous users during business hours (about 150 total users but some are very light web users), so our company has outgrown this filter and we are currently evaluating options for a replacement. What I find inexcusable is the malfunctioning of the unit, failure to block malware, and the long hold times for tech support.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullUghh, what a pain this unit ended up being. In the beginning of our 3 year (so far) ownership, it worked mostly well. It blocked the domains we asked it to, and it blocked spyware/malware fairly well. We did have issues with it grinding https sites to a halt, so we had to turn off https filtering. Eventually as more sites went to secure http, our filter was not able to block those domains anymore, and once people figured this out, the web filter just became a very expensive/ineffective AntiVirus. For example, it blocks http://www.facebook.com just fine, but can't block https://www.facebook.com even with https filtering turned on.Then it stopped working randomly. I found out why; the Log storage would get full, and there is NO WAY to clear it yourself. You can go into a special URL where you can change a log setting, but it never had any impact on the log storage. So, guess what, you have to call in, and have a technician manually clear out some of the logs, and it literally takes hours to do this. Meanwhile, the filter does not log anything. It would need to be reset every 3 days or so. Not a big deal. But as our user and bandwidth usage increased, I figured that's why it was having issues, but now it needs to be reset DAILY. This includes the weekends when there are only 5 or 6 people here, and I've checked our bandwidth reports, so I know that it isn't due to these increases that the filter crashes. It's just a piece of junk. Barracuda even in the beginning refused to believe it was defective, or to send another one out.I have spent several hours on the phone with tech support, and they always say 'Oh, well our new firmware that's coming out in a couple weeks (really 6 months) should solve all of those problems. I went from firmware 4 to 7, and still nothing has improved. In fact, there are more issues now.We are getting the next model up soon for a trial period, and barracuda said they would give us $500 for this pos. I guess that's better than nothing, but I am not sold on barracuda right now, and we are considering other options. The only reason it gets two stars is because it did work for a few months in the beginning. If you look at the cost of the unit, a few months of success is not enough to justify the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullUnit is working great, and helping keep the network safe. The only issue we had was the unit initially not being configured right to work in a Xenapp environment. Once I set it up in a hybrid authentication mode, it has been smooth sailing. Their tech support was very helpful with any questions I had!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullThis device does a good job for the money; I also have a much more expensive Cisco product which does a better job but cost three times as much. It was very easy to install and configure and I have had almost no problems with false positives. The only complaint I have is that is cannot do wild cards with subdomains. *.xyz.com vs mail.xyz.com, etc.. Overall I am very happy with the device.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullI bought one of these recently to replace a Fortiwall 200 that I was using for web filtering only. Overall I am satisfied with the device for the price I payed.Pros: For the price I got good customer service and a device that I can easily customize. With the AD agent that it comes with I can create custom filtering for users based on thier AD group assignments. This is very nice. It was easy to install. It easy to create custom filter groups as well and easy use the built in filters. Barracuda even turns on recommended filters by defualt. It also comes with a spyware removal tool at no additional cost that has worked for me several times just in the past few months. If your service contract expires the device will continue to work, just without new filter defininations. And if the device fails, it will fail open so Internet access will no go down. Aslo, while I am not doing this yet, you can use the appliance to block a kinds of other TCP traffic outbound for the Internet. And it blocks outbound spyware requests by default from all workstations.Cons: The firmware is a bit buggy and Barracuda is slow to create new firmware releases. If the web gui service goes down thier is a way to putty into the backend but only Barracuda support is allowed to do this. Firmware updates require an appliance reboot which takes the Internet offline for about 3 mins. so you have to do this after hours. Reporting is good but the reports are a bit hard to understand. Sometimes filter results are not what you would expect. If an item gets classified in two catagories where one is blocked but the other is not the item will be allowed or blocked based on the sequenial ordering of the rules. This order cannot be changes by the appliance owner. I would rather see blocking based on a "most retrictive" methodoligy. So far this issue is. Most site are blocked as expected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullnot a spam filter, this is a malware filter. Basically an inline streaming AV product. not a bad unit but there have been security concerns with Barracuda backdoors which is not something you can have in a security product. Shows a basic disregard for security.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullWe have owned our 310 for about 3 years. It's currently loaded with the latest firmware. While the device works most of the time, there are those nagging little issues where web sites will timeout or go very slow. Changing the web filter to Audit mode makes these issues go away so it's easy to see that the web filter is the cause.Basic reporting is OK but if I need to view the web logs to pull a list of all web sites a user has visited, it could take an hour or two for the device to apply the filter. Your best bet would be to get a log server to export the log file and do reporting using another tool.Moving between screens on the web admin tool can take 15-20 seconds. Recently, Barracuda released a definition file which incorrectly identified Google as a bad site. This caused our device to sieze since we were using the Google DNS servers. During the installation of the definitions to fix the issue, the device crashed and we had to rebuild the server from scratch. If you're looking at purchasing, please try it out and test it thoroughly before you spend the cash.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullHad this device for quite a few years. Works well. Doesn't have the advanced SSL filtering that some of the larger models have. The UI is slow, especially in the newest firmware version, which is sad since it looks so nice. Plays nice with my pfsense gateway and integrates into Active Directory which is nice for monitoring users and auditing.Barracuda support is always top-notch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullWe have had one of these for about 3 years now, and it died a few days ago (randomly). Interestingly enough, web traffic was still flowing through the device after it died (no power lights anywhere), so it took days to realize she was dead. I love the automatic configuration backup. Since we got ours replaced under warranty, it took less than 30 minutes to restore the configuration and put the new device in place. The web interface is very good and easy to use. I like the AD integration better than products like OpenDNS that do not do this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullHorrible, do not buy. Product was problem from day one. Client purchased it to monitor its employees. Wanted to know where they go on the internet. Product picks up bunch of noise, junk with real data so reports become useless. We spend many hours with them on the phone trying to please company CEO with reports. CEO travels often, so could not get final feed back from CEO right away. 4 month later CEO demanded to get rid of the product as it was useless. Tech support could not help. Barracuda refused to take the product back.We had other issues with some other devices as well. Not sure about their large devices, but their smaller devices are a joke. Tech support is hit and miss as well. Tech support admitted that 210, 310 are junk. Will never do business with them. Dishonest.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullWould not recommend Barracuda web filters. To many sites are uncategorized, constantly having to maintain white list. Can't allow uncategorized sites because anonymous proxies are often uncategorized in Barracuda web filter but identified by OpenDNS. Looking at moving to OpenDNS Umbrella.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullI've been using the webfilter 310 for just under 3 years now. Apart from some issues during the firmware upgrades where the system doesn't reload properly and causes it to go into bypass mode it's a really good system to work with.web GUI is a bit on the slow side, but it just works!! open box, turn on, setup IP details.Reports in new firmware have improved.best deployment is "In-Line" and using single AD domain, Barracuda supports the multiple domain structure but sometimes I find exemptions don't apply correctly. This is a good product for the price, good for the SME market.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullI have been very happy with this device. It has AD integration for seamless integration for my users and I can get very granular with web traffic (allowing access to certain sites at only certain times of the day, or by allowing only x number of minutes per day/week, etc., for any one or group of users.I have found some issues which all could be addressed with varying levels of complication and requiring the assistance of the support department. My first call to support was poor, but my others (about 4) have all been stellar. The reporting is pretty decent, although you really need to look over several different reports to get a good feel for what is going on. There is a great deal of flexibility with this device and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to manage user internet activity.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullIn my opinion, this is the easiest solution to deploy. I've installed three of these units for a couple of clients and they just work. Very little configuration needed and you can literally just drop this into your network between your firewall and ISP equipment. Two cables, that's it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullI was worried about this product because it is a pass-thru device, and had the potential to be a single point of failure between us and the internet. Unplugging the device it 'fails open', so that fear was unfounded. It works great, and is easy to setup, and does exactly what it says. I'm the one IT guy for a 37 person office, so I'm stretched thin. The one time I thought this product caused a problem (with a very oddball website) the tech stayed on the phone and online for 30 minutes with me while trying to troubleshoot this, spread across 2 phone calls. Turned out it wasn't the barracuda's fault. Reporting also could be stronger. However, for the price that is a small problem when compared to the speed, ease, and effectiveness of deployment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullWe just received our 310 this week. There is lots to love.- 1 month free trial of the hardware with no money up front. Don't like it? Don't buy it!- AD integration- Reporting is decent and the ability to send logging to a syslog server makes this good for companies that need to retain that data.- Seamless integration into our environment. The best part is support. Their support is hands down one of the best I've dealt with in years. Have a problem or question? Fill out a form online or just call the support line. There are some downsides to the 310:- Only 1 WAN port - this complicates our setup since we have stacked Sonicwalls - manual move of the crossover cable if hardware failures occurs is not my idea of fun- Cannot add custom applications to block (though the list of applications it will block is impressive- You have to be very careful when creating your rules to make sure you do both the authenticated and unauthenticated web traffic.Overall, this is the perfect solution for small businesses. It's another device to manage but frankly it's cake to manage so I'm not too worried about that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullI have the 410 Model which is a slight step up from this model, but other than higher throughput and larger cache it is pretty much the same. This device was extremely easy to install and configure. I had a small issue with the product not activating, but a quick call to the company and we were up and running. Does it block everything on the planet? No. Does it make the students in my building work much harder to get around it? Yes. This product is faster, cheaper, and easier to manage than our last product (BorderManager) so I am very happy with it so far

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullI love Barracuda products. Their spam filtering is tops in my book so I figured I'd have great things to say about their web filter. Well, the first one hardware failed so I requested another to be sent in. Both the old and new devices would go off line and require a reboot about once every 2 weeks. Countless calls with support have been unable to resolve the issues. Even the new device had a hardware failure but was able to recover by reloading the entire OS on the device. We opted to replace the barracuda with OpenDNS. I just cant have my users down when the web filtering device goes down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullWe had been using the 410 but we are probable going to be getting rid of it for a better option. The product constantly freezes shutting down all internet traffic, the user specific web filtering is intermittent at best and the level of support we have received from their support group has been far less than satisfactory. At the current time they have recommended that we shutdown most of the reporting capability so that it wont freeze on us again while they try and come up with a way to fix it. Not good, sorry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullWorks well with latest firmware. Does not work well with Terminal Services and identifying those users. It will work well with Citrix however. If the web filter is not configured properly, it will bog down network traffic. Thanks to Baracuda, they have great support and can remotely troubleshoot settings and run diagnostics.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from nullwe have the 310 which has been running like a champ more or less for past 5 years... so i should not complain much there ... however as many folks here stated, the system is now constantly having issues with allowing fake AV's, not filtering as it should, not showing certain pages in propert format, the only resolve the techs have is to move to newer unit which will support he upgraded firmware which magically will fix all the issues... more than likely i will replace the unit but with such "bailout" answers from their support, it leaves me to wonder and check out the competition before plunking down few grand for hardware and support....
