How to Buy SQL Server 2008 R2

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 may be purchased through:

  • a Server/Client Access License (CAL) Model with a server license and incremental CALs
  • a Per-Processor License Model

SQL Licensing Models
Processor License Under this model, a license is required for each physical processor that is accessed by an operating system environment running SQL Server software. This license model does not require any device or user client access licenses (CALs) as an unlimited number of users are allowed access to a SQL Server licensed per processor.
Server plus Device CALs Under this model, a server license is required for each operating system environment running an instance of SQL Server software, as well as a CAL for each client device that accesses a server running SQL Server either directly or indirectly through another application, website, or any other middletier.
Server plus User CALs Under this model, a server license is required for each operating system environment running an instance of SQL Server software, as well as a CAL for each user that accesses a server running SQL Server either directly or indirectly through another application, website, or any other middletier.
Virtualization Please contact your Account Manager or Licensing Specialist for assistance with any SQL Server licensing scenarios involving server virtualization.
Types of SQL Client Access Licenses (CALs)
SQL CAL Any SQL CAL can be used against any licensed SQL Server edition regardless of the platform (32 bit, 64 bit, and IA64).
Workgroup CAL Workgroup CALs are available per user and per device but can only be used against a licensed SQL Server Workgroup edition.
