These use the older APC battery charging system, which is widely-known to grossly overcharge the batteries by maintaining a very high float voltage. This results in swollen and out-gassing batteries within 3 years. There are much better UPSs available, including the SMX line, that have smart charging systems. Avoid all of the APC SUA-series UPSs for this reason.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing UPS I bought this UPS second hand and I didn't expect it to last as long as it did just long enough till I could buy a really good one. Well I was completely wrong. I have had this UPS for at least 3 years and who knows how long the previous owners had it. I am just now going to change the batteries because i woke up this morning to the change battery light. It has saved my smart TV, My $1500 computer rig, and everything else that I have hooked up to it. It has plenty of juice to run everything I need for enough time till power is restored or till I can safely get it shutdown. This UPS has been a life saver I wouldn't run my electronics without it ever.

First set of batteries died just last month, so they lasted just under 5 years. Since another reviewer said the float voltage was too high, I pulled out a multitester to check; it was exactly what I see recommended for SLA batteries. The external battery connector is sourced by TE (formerly Tyco Electronics, formerly AMP). It's their "series 50." With a little crimping/soldering, you can construct your own external battery cable. Since the 1000XL is designed to work with external battery packs, this worked very well. Bought these for home use, but my day job is electrical engineer. In addition to the 2 1000XLs, I have a SUA1500. These three units are used to power a sump pump, refrigerator, and several computers.

The computer equipment attached to it is in use constantly, and heavily. It never gets a break. I've had this unit for 8 years at this point, and I am very happy I purchased this UPS. I have had to replace the batteries only twice (the last replacement was 4 months ago), so I am seeing battery replacements only every 3.5 years which is great.

You can often find these at a decent price online if you look around. Desktop models are always welcome in home and small office environments. Definitely recommended!
