Rated 5 out of 5 by from Has drastically reduced the amount of processing time from seven days to one day What is most valuable? I use Oracle databases with multiple clients mainly for analyzing financial transactions. They use it to find the profit and loss for each and every day of trading activity. Finding out out a single day's profit and loss used to take them almost seven days to calculate. For example, if they wanted to find out something new, they could find the profit and loss of the day's data only by the following week. So we introduced Oracle Database Appliance for the extra data and to gather all the information we have across all the systems. We built a warehouse database that will accommodate all the information and we reduced the time to determine the entire transactions of P and L into a single day. The Oracle database is able to get the data, process it, and return it to the company's CEO's and CFO's within a single day, and thus they are able to find out yesterday's P and L by today. It has drastically reduced the amount and time of processing from seven days to one day. This is our main use for Oracle. The business intelligence and data warehousing features are the best part of Oracle Database Appliance. What needs improvement? It could be that we may not be using Oracle and GoldenGate in the way we are supposed to be using them. We have faced a couple of issues with GoldenGate. Whenever we have issues, the Oracle support will take the time to understand how GoldenGate works. The stability of the GoldenGate could be improved, although it is pretty stable. In terms of Database Appliance, the important thing is how you design it. If the underlying design is good, then Oracle will perform exactly how we want it to perform. But if the underlying design or the underlying architecture is bad, then Oracle is not going to give the expert the results he needs. It all depends upon the developer who designs it. I haven't seen any drawback with the Oracle database assets, and for the past five years I've been using it in our team. In terms of what can be improved, I'd say Artificial Intelligence, AI. It would be really helpful if AI was incorporated into the solution. On a scale of one to ten, I would rate Oracle Database Appliance an eight. For how long have I used the solution? I've been using Oracle Database Appliance for five years. I moved to AWS Cloud Platform and now we are migrating the Oracle appliances to the Cloud Platform, which is an AWS platform as a service. What do I think about the stability of the solution? Oracle Database Appliance is really reliable. The stability and scalability of Oracle Database are reliable. I would say that it is more reliable than scalable. With the 19c, I've seen that it is stable in most cases but we had certain issues when we tried to create scale on 12c. We had issues when we used the previous, older version of Oracle, 12c. It was not that easy to use 12c because we had to get certain hardware. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? In terms of scalability, it is not bad. It was not that easy to scale. I don't think it's easily scalable. I think more than 400 or 600 people are using it in the company. How are customer service and technical support? Their technical support is really good. It has really good products and I'm pretty satisfied. How was the initial setup? The initial setup of Database Appliance is straightforward. But It depends upon the applications that you're using. If you want to use it on top of the database, it's going to be straightforward. But if you want to do it at some other part of the process the third party client has to do an APA call. It depends upon the way they implement it. If it's going to be a third party vendor using it he'll have to make APA calls, then it's going to be a bit complex. What other advice do I have? I would recommend Oracle Database Appliance. Oracle is the benchmark in the field. Still, I would recommend you doing a proof of concept with Oracle Database first and then consider the other databases. We support their warehouse and we are looking into the network data warehouse product, which is tightly integrated. This is pretty much the go-to product for that process due to the fact that it's all in one box, and is pre-packaged. It's all Oracle servers, and Oracle hardware, and Oracle software and it's all in one. How has it helped my organization? We used to have different vendors and servers. Everything was all over the place. Now that we are on Oracle, everything is centralized, removing a lot of complexity. What is most valuable? The deployment is super-simple as everything is pre-packaged. There's very little configuration to worry about. We manage everything through the appliance. It's easier to manage from our side of the managed databases and add more storage, et cetera. It's very easy to mimic what we need. we can easily add more storage whenever we want. The scalability is great. We had Commodity servers - those bales servers on-premises - and there was a lot of maintenance going on with that. After moving to RDA, life is much easier because everything is managed through those deployed solutions. It's easier to manage this way. From a maintenance point of view and from an upgrade and migration point of view, it is very easy because most of the upgrades are fast. We can take one down and finish the upgrade and move onto the next as necessary. It's easier to manage the patches and upgrades. The solution is pretty automated, which takes out the possibility of human error. The pricing is great. It's much better than what the competition is offering. The product is pretty user-friendly. What needs improvement? There aren't really any features that the solution is lacking. The product is quite complex to set up, initially. It would be ideal if it was simpler. Any limitations within the solution are case by case. The solution may work for some, but it isn't for everyone. The product is still evolving. It could still, for example, be more user-friendly. It's not quite perfect yet. For how long have I used the solution? I've been using this solution since last year. What do I think about the stability of the solution? The solution is pretty stable. I don't recall bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash. I find it pretty reliable overall. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? The solution can easily scale. We've found that if we need to add more storage, it's very straightforward to do so. If a company needs to scale, it's not a problem with Oracle. In our case, because we are on-premises, there are some limitations due to the fact that we only have two servers. We understand our limitations and we know it will work well for us over the next five years or so. And then, if we need to expand, we can plan for that. We have about 500 active users within our company on the solution. We have reporting applications and a lot of data manipulations, and all that going on, on this database. It's mostly IT personnel on it currently. How are customer service and technical support? We've worked with Oracle a lot, compared to other previous solutions. The company sells it with support and clients get account managers that they can reach out to. Overall, technical support has been good. I'd rate it a nine out of ten. They are very knowledgeable and responsive. They are very good. We've been satisfied with the service provided. Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch? We used to have similar databases on different servers, and we had to work through different vendors. We had different storage, then different servers, then different vendors and the backup solution was on another vendor as well. There was a lot of coordination required. It added a lot of complexity to everything. With this kind of a solution, everything is on one kind of a black box. We don't have to worry too much and the level of coordination required has dissipated. How was the initial setup? The initial setup is not straightforward. It's quite complex. Once you get the hang of it and get it going, it's easier for others on our application team. It's also easier to manage int he long run. The main problem is that it's quite different from what we used to do, so there's a bit of a learning curve during the setup. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? The pricing is really good for us. We have no complaints there. It's not as expensive as other products on the market. The excellent price point is one of the reasons we moved to RDA. What other advice do I have? We're just a customer. We don't have a business relationship with Oracle. Due to the current contractual agreements, et cetera, within our organization, we are not doing or considering anything on the cloud - from the database side at least. I'd rate the solution eight out of ten. There are still some limitations. That said, it did simplify a lot of things for us, compared to our old setup. We use the histories to make reports like the MIS (Management Information System) reports. Mainly it is a database. What is most valuable? I think the most valuable part of the Oracle Database Appliance is just the ability to use the database. We make the reports on our own and let Oracle do what it does best. What needs improvement? We try to operate through the ODI, or Oracle Data Integrator, to maintain data integration. We have plans to use Visual I/O for data mapping, data flow, and things like that. Oracle could improve the capabilities for visualizing without other, third-party tools. But it is OK. We are not looking for any new features in the product. Whatever additional utility we need we have been able to do using Hadoop for now. For us, the product can stay the same. The only way it can improve is by doing even better with integrations to other products like Hadoop. For how long have I used the solution? The company has been using this product since before I came here. It has been in use for a very long time. I would say it is maybe 10 years or more. What do I think about the stability of the solution? Over the course of these ten years, I would say that this product has been stable. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? We have recently moved the Oracle Database to work with SAP (Systems Applications and Products in Data Processing). We did this because we are planning to start now to scale up. We have a very good profile now to work with. I think scalability is good. I think we already have 100 users working with this product in their organizations. We are planning to scale up. How are customer service and technical support? Most of the time we are doing the technical support by ourselves. When Oracle does not offer much support, we have to do it by ourselves. Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch? We started with Oracle. We did not use another product before that. How was the initial setup? The initial setup is easy to do because we have the ability to do it in house. We are able to deploy this product by ourselves, without an integrator. That suggests it is easy enough to do. We have a team of six people that we need for deployment and for maintenance. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? There are no additional costs beyond the standard licensing fees. Which other solutions did I evaluate? It is not a product we evaluated to use instead of Oracle, but we have some small products we use with it to enhance the functionality and capabilities. For example, we use Hadoop for data modeling and other things. We plan to keep on using Oracle Database Appliance and we will do our data mining with Hadoop. We saw there was reason to use Hadoop with Oracle to have a better overall solution. What other advice do I have? I think for people interested in using Oracle Appliance the main thing is to rely on Oracle for the bigger stuff that it does. Maybe it cannot provide the kind of reports that we want. This is how we have determined the importance of Hadoop to our processes. Hadoop is part of my recommendation to other users who try this product. Oracle can do what it does best and Hadoop can help with reporting on the data. For other use cases, companies may need a different solution to enhance what Oracle provides — to complete one small part of the picture. When you find it, you should use it. On a scale from one to ten (where one is worst and ten is best), I would rate Oracle Database Appliance as an eight-out-of-ten. Which deployment model are you using for this solution? End User response time for Core Banking Application How has it helped my organization? By adding ODA in our infrastructure, it helps to spare time for other Adminstration & Research activities.. What is most valuable? The most valuable feature is the performance. Its a pre-configured device and you just plug and play.. What needs improvement? It has limitations of Storage as well as network connectiivty over 10G Fiber. For how long have I used the solution? We have been using the Oracle Database Appliance for about six years, since 2014. What do I think about the stability of the solution? The appliance is pretty stable. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? It is scalable, although it only has two storage shelves available. The total usual storage after RAID dual parity is between 12 and 15 TB. How are customer service and technical support? Technical support is very good and the people are nice. Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch? Prior to using the appliance, we had our Oracle Database installed on a Dell server. We had some performance issues with the system, which is why we switched. How was the initial setup? The initial setup is okay. We just have to plug in the machine and set up the applications. What about the implementation team? Although, the purchase contract have engagement of the vendors for its deployment and in PAKISTAN we at ZTBL is the first who are deploying the ODA. since its a pre configured machine so no special training is required for its deployment. Moreover, the expertise level of the vendor is satisfied. What was our ROI? By deploying ODA in your infra, you can spare time for other activities instead of resolving issues of traditional system. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? Should go wiht ODA , breakup the cost of hardware, setup & Licensing, you will find that ODA is much cheaper than any other solution in terms of setup and operational cost Which other solutions did I evaluate? we had reviewed traditional system configuration like servers attached wiht any SAN storage. But the performance benchmarks we have with ODA is not avavilabe in other options. What other advice do I have? The Oracle Database Appliance is a product that I recommend. It is really good for small businesses where there are database-intensive applications that need high performance. I would rate this solution a ten out of ten. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to implement and handles a lot of data but is too expensive What is our primary use case? We are using it in our companies. We work with others, especially at the enterprise level. What is most valuable? The product is very light. By that I mean, in terms of response rate, it's light. Oracle can handle a lot of data. The implementation process is easy. What needs improvement? There are more freeware options out there these days that are less costly if you are a company that can work in the cloud environment. They are much better than Oracle in the price to value ratio. Even though the solution can handle a lot of data, it's just too expensive currently. There should be more analysis for debugging. Right now, this is only available in the Enterprise Edition. If you have the Standard Edition, like us, you're stuck with some limited functionalities. In order to access the best features, you need to level up to the Enterprise Edition. The software comes with only four cores, which is not really very advisable. It doesn't really help in terms of the modern way of working. While the machines are getting better, at the same time they tend to run a lot of test databases, like virtual machines, and Oracle doesn't work well with all of that. It's only JBM that they work well with. Technical support is not very helpful if you only have the Standard Edition. They should work ell with other machines. If it could integrate better, it might be more user-friendly for businesses. For how long have I used the solution? I've been using the solution for more than five years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? It's stable. We've had hitches, however. We have been been using the Standard Edition, so there have been many hitches in that due to the fact that you need the Enterprise Edition and a diagnostic pack to do what we need in order to investigate. That's where we find most of our issues. It's very hard to populate. If you look at the other DBs in the same price range, the functionality is a lot more in terms of diagnostic tools, in terms of helping in resolving issues. The Standard Edition does not solve those problems. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? The solution is scalable to an extent. If you look at the Enterprise Edition, yes, it's scalable at the cost, not scalable per se, just scalable at a huge cost. If you're meeting the revenues, if you're large enough to afford it, that's fine. Otherwise, no, it does not scale well. We have three people, off and on, who work on the product. It doesn't have that many user requirements. We are still not such a huge company, so three people off and on are enough. We have one person on it during the day, one at night, and one extra that can cover. How are customer service and support? We need technical support sometimes, however, not much help is covered with the Standard Edition. The best advice we get is "Move to Enterprise, then we can solve all your problems." That's where it is. I wouldn't rate technical support that high. How was the initial setup? The implementation process was easy in terms of deployment, however, it's a physical installation which just adds to the overall cost of the solution. It's not just the solution that's expensive, it's the resources you need to think about that are expensive. In COVID times, these costs were especially rough. It's hard to justify a huge cost, especially in an enterprise. What other advice do I have? I'm a customer. I'm not a partner or a reseller of Oracle. I would advise potential new users to make a good business plan. Think about the cost, especially the per-transaction cost. And what size of database that you're going to need. Oracle is a Ferrari. A Ferrari is an unreliable and expensive machine. It's an expensive purchase. As you scale, the Oracle costs will also go up. It's not like you have a fixed cost now and you not going to have a fixed cost later. You will have a fixed cost on the Oracle and it will keep on increasing. From that perspective, the business plan needs to be right. There are some regulatory areas that we happen to be in that means we can't move to the cloud. That is why we are still with Oracle. If we could move to the cloud, we would not be with Oracle. My biggest consideration is the price/value ratio, especially nowadays. Oracle was good when the only other alternative was IBM, and now, not so much. I would say if you're a large business then maybe it's a seven out of ten. What needs improvement? I would like it if the scalability could be increased without having to change versions. There is only so much that you can do with it. It's not like software that you are free to install anywhere. For how long have I used the solution? I have been working with Oracle Database Appliance for a few years. We work with two versions, but they are not new versions, and they are not the same versions. What do I think about the stability of the solution? Oracle Database Appliance is a stable solution. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? Oracle Database Appliance, as an appliance, is limited in terms of how far you can scale it. Because it comes with prebuilt equipment, there is a limit to how much storage you can put into it. It's a prebuilt Appliance. If you want to scale, then you have to change. You now have a more recent version. There are several variations. As a result, you must upgrade to a newer version. In our company, we have six engineers who use this solution. How are customer service and support? Oracle has good technical support. Whether it is local or on the internet, they have good support. How was the initial setup? It's not difficult if you've done installations before. There is documentation. Everything is labeled, but it cannot be done by just anyone; you must have knowledge of the infrastructure. Even though the documentation is available, everything is labeled and you simply plugin according to the diagram. It isn't a problem. It isn't difficult. The deployment can be done by one person, either a technician or an engineer. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? You must pay for the license. It is usually an annual subscription. What other advice do I have? I would give it a seven out of ten as there is a limit to how much you can scale. You can't go beyond what the appliance provides. I have been working as an Oracle consultant for more than fifteen years and have dealt with several customers with several use cases who seek a simple database for usage. Some of the customers whom I have dealt with are into data warehousing, while others were some big banks and so on. In general, I have dealt with a very different set of customers. What is most valuable? The most valuable features of the solution revolve around its performance, simplicity, and its installation phase. What needs improvement? It is not the features of the product that require improvement. Oracle's product support is an area of concern where improvements are required. The support team should respond faster to users facing issues with Oracle products. I work in Germany, and if I open a service request with the support team of Oracle at eight o'clock in the evening, I will most likely get connected to an engineer working in the USA at eight o'clock the next evening, which is not good. For how long have I used the solution? I have been using Oracle Database Appliance for twenty-five years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? It is a very stable solution. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? If the solution is deployed on an on-premises model, it doesn't offer much scalability to users. Users who have deployed the solution on the cloud get the option to scale up or scale down. I deal with more than 700 customers who use the services provided by Oracle services. How are customer service and support? The solution's technical support is very bad. What was our ROI? The product's initial setup phase was straightforward for me, though some of the tool's customers found it difficult. With a good starting point, installing and using Oracle is very easy. Nowadays, we use scripts, so the installation and implementation can be done in an hour or two. Ten years ago, the deployment took place over a period of two or three days. Ultimately, the time needed to deploy the product depends on how the people involved in the deployment phase use the environment on the customer side. Speaking about the product's deployment process, I can say that Oracle has different products. When I want to install the database software from Oracle, I use the graphical interface of Oracle with fifteen, nineteen, or twenty pages and click through the radio buttons or use a script to configure the file and attach it to my installation process to complete the installation phase. There are no simple steps for the installation of the database from Oracle. When I want to install some application, the installation process may seem more complex since I have no experience in it. The solution is deployed on the cloud and on an on-premises model. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? Oracle Database Appliance is a very expensive solution. If you have opted for the on-premises licenses from Oracle, then you have to pay yearly. If you have opted for the cloud subscriptions offered by Oracle, then you can pay either monthly or yearly. If you want to use Oracle licenses and some hardware, then you need to buy the hardware separately. If a customer of Oracle wants to buy internet systems, they can choose it from the hardware provided by Oracle. In short, customers only pay for the hardware they purchase from Oracle and not for any additional services. What other advice do I have? I recommend that those who plan to use Oracle go ahead with their plans. I would also suggest they speak with the partners of Oracle, as they are the ones who are much more interested in solving the problems of customers. From my point of view, Oracle is more interested in selling products and not solving problems or giving solutions to customers. I rate the overall tool a nine out of ten. What is most valuable? The most valuable feature of Oracle Database Appliance is the ease of management. What needs improvement? Oracle Database Appliance is stopping support for the standard edition and only continuing support for the RAC One Node. They did not inform us and we are having problems with our customers. We are not having to change our systems from standard to something else. For how long have I used the solution? I have been using Oracle Database Appliance for approximately five years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? We did not have any stability issues with Oracle Database Appliance. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? Oracle Database Appliance is scalable according to the license purchased. We didn't need any extra storage, but if we need storage we can add it. We have many systems and toll collection systems using the solution. The call centers that use the solution have approximately 100 people using each environment. How are customer service and support? The hardware support of Oracle Database Appliance was not good five years ago, but now it is. The support is responsive and solves the issues. Most of the support is automated, and when we send the snapshot automation fails they are easily solved. I rate the support from Oracle Database Appliance a five out of five. How would you rate customer service and support? Positive Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch? I have not used another solution similar to Oracle Database Appliance. How was the initial setup? The Oracle Database Appliance has an easy installation. It took approximately four to five hours. If we do not do a re-image it can be done in one to two hours. What about the implementation team? We did the implementation of the solution in-house with one person. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? I don’t know ODA and alternative system prices. But Oracle the database license is quite expensive and a lot of my customers plan to migrate to open source databases like PostgreSQL. I rate the price of Oracle Database Appliance a four out of five. What other advice do I have? I would recommend people to use this solution it is good. Oracle Database Appliance is a stable solution. We have clients that have been running it for 10 years. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? Database Appliance is highly scalable. How are customer service and support? I have contacted the support from Oracle Database Appliance. Their services are no longer up to my expectation. I rate the support from Oracle Database Appliance a three out of five. What was our ROI? We have seen a return on investment with Oracle Database Appliance. This is why we still support them today. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? The price of the solution should be less expensive. However, they will increase the price more. What other advice do I have? I would advise others to look for a company that has their own experience, that is local. This will allow them to have a local understanding of what requirements are needed. Sometimes the international companies may not be aware of the local requirements. One of the reasons that we are very still supporting Oracle Database Appliance is because we feel that Oracle has a lot of customers and a lot of implementers that are local. That's one of the key points that we're still with Oracle. I rate Oracle Database Appliance ten out of ten. Oracle Database Appliance is the best. This is the best hardware environment you can do it. What needs improvement? The feature that I would like to see improve is the interface. It is really not good. I almost have to work on script by script in it. There is always some issue with the user interface. A firewall feature embedded in the solution would be good as well. I realized then that Oracle's local support do not talk to other Oracle support people who. It's very strange; sometimes it feels like two different companies. We switched because it was too small. Oracle Database Appliance is much cheaper for us to use overall. How was the initial setup? The initial setup was very difficult for us. On a scale of one to 10, with one being cheap and 10 being expensive, I would rate Oracle Database Appliance a seven. What other advice do I have? My advice for those looking to implement this solution is: it's a great solution but you will need two machines to run it. The product is good value for money. It is a secure solution. ODA has two most valuable features. First, it’s very easy to deploy. Once received, you can unpack it, rack it, install it in less than one day and having a fully usable machine very quickly. The second feature is its scalability: you can start with a small configuration (regarding Oracle licensing) and then enable Oracle CPU depending on your needs. How has it helped my organization? Not my organization because I work as a consultant. But one of my customers who has bought an ODA started a database for 10 shops and then he grew the number of CPUs enabled each time he opened some new shops. What do I think about the stability of the solution? Only one time during an upgrade, because the customer made some modifications in the machine configuration and he forgot that ODA is an appliance, not a traditional platform. So you have to be careful when you want to modify the system. A better way to do it is to ask support, when in doubt. Which solutions did we use previously? Usually my customers switched to ODA because they didn’t have a full-time DBA in their organization, and they wanted an easy to use solution that can be installed and upgraded easily. How was the initial setup? The initial setup is very straightforward. As said above, you can deploy the machine in less that one day. But, as it’s an appliance, if you are not very familiar with this kind of deployment, read the docs and ask support first. Which other solutions did I evaluate? Usually, the customers I work for who chose ODA have licensed their database with the enterprise edition and they usually buy the diagnostic pack and deploy an enterprise manager cloud control to easily administer their OD platform. Database consolidation and for X6-2L also database performance improvement due to NVMe storage being used, which dramatically increases I/O performance What is most valuable? We value the appliance architecture with its “everything-in-a-box” highly standardized setup. For the new ODA X6-2 models there is a possibility to deploy also SE/SE2 databases in a bare-metal deployment as well as the boosted I/O performance due to NVMe Flash disks. How has it helped my organization? For one customer it consolidated several databases from several Windows physical servers into one single ODA and resulted in increased stability. For another customer it was used to “isolate” the last Oracle database system on one single ODA, thereby freeing-up SAN storage and rack server slots used by an old Linux cluster. What needs improvement? The following issues need some attention: * Ease of administration and deployment. With ODA X6-2 there are different “OAK” administration commands for the S/M/L models (e.g. “odacli”) compared to the HA model ("oakcli"). * In my opinion only one single command should be used for all ODA models, as it’s confusing. * Some of the new commands have limitations/restrictions, though I assume they’ll be improved over time. For how long have I used the solution? We have been using the solution since 2012. We implemented 2x ODA V1 systems. What was my experience with deployment of the solution? With the X6-2L we had a couple of early replacements, e.g. PCI card and battery What do I think about the stability of the solution? We only had a stability issue with the ODA V1 due to an ASM disk mount issue (“ORA-600 [KFDJOIN3]”, bug). This issue delayed the go-live for production databases, but was fixed with the assistance of Oracle Support relatively fast. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? We only had a scalability issue regarding local storage, especially on the ODA V1. How is customer service and technical support? I would rate the technical support as six out of 10. Over the past couple of years, I’ve found that the quality of Oracle Support first-level has decreased. Which solutions did we use previously? We used custom-built single-server or cluster solutions. The ODA provides a high degree of standardization. How was the initial setup? The initial deployment of 2x ODA V1s was accomplished in one day, including unpacking and rack-mounting. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? Leverage the Pay-As-You-Grow licensing, and consider using the ODA X6-2 S/M/L models also for SE2/SE. Which other solutions did I evaluate? We evaluated Exadata, which often is overkill for many small and medium sized databases. What other advice do I have? If you go with 1x ODA then at least establish a Data Guard standby system on a Linux server, e.g. Public Cloud. I suggest to use 2x ODAs in each DR setup. When there is a need, we can directly increase or decrease the CPU cores of this machine. * NVM Express (NVMe) solid-state drives: This technology brings outstanding I/O performance for midsize databases. We have tested it by doing POCs on customer sites and the results were quite satisfying. * Virtualization: Using the KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine), we can virtualize this machine and run both databases and applications on it. * Affordable price: When we think about the technology and the features that this machine delivers, the price seems to provide a lot of value. * Engineered system: This machine is a 1U engineered system optimized, tested and delivered by Oracle. It is a ready-to-use, easy-to-deploy environment for running Oracle products. * Support for multiple database versions: Both 11.2.0.4 and 12c databases are supported with this machine. * Support for multiple database editions: Both Standard edition and Enterprise edition databases are supported with this machine. * ODA X6-2 is easy to manage: It delivers management utilities such as odacli and virt-manager (for virtualization management). How has it helped my organization? Nowadays, we migrate midsize EBS environments (EBS 11i, 12.1 and 12.2) to these machines. We use the machine as a consolidation environment and we also see a performance increase in the database layer. Customers with limited licenses prefer this machine, as it has capacity-on-demand features which are completely aligned with Oracle licensing policies. It is an easy-to-deploy database environment, which does not need much maintenance work. A DBA with knowledge of Oracle technologies, such as ASM and database, can manage it. The system resources of this machine are quite enough for running midsize Oracle databases but, if there is a need, customers can expand their disk and memory resources. This machine is also used as a standby database environment, especially for customers who have ODA HA or Exadata in their primary sites, and want to have an affordable engineered system for their standby sites. What needs improvement? Oracle ODA is a fixed server appliance. It would be improved if it were an engineered system with scale-out capabilities. Virtualization features could also be improved. A web-based GUI would be a good start. Also VM-specific features, which provide VM-level fault tolerancy, could be added to this product. (This improvement would depends on the scale-out capabilities). For how long have I used the solution? I have used ODA X3, X4 and X5 models for three years. This ODA X6-2M is a new ODA model and I have used it the last six months. What do I think about the stability of the solution? None. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? No issues, but there is room for improvement here. Currently, there is no scale-out option for any of the models in ODA family. How is customer service and technical support? Quite good. When you buy this machine it is registered with Oracle. Any service request is created using this registration. SR creation and updates are fast. Which solutions did we use previously? Conventional systems. Most of the time, the reasons for switching are the optimal price and the promising features. How was the initial setup? Straightforward. The whole environment is built in one hour by following the Oracle documentation and using the related utilities. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? Get benefit from the capacity-on-demand features. License your cores according to your licenses. Which other solutions did I evaluate? Standard HP servers and other members of the ODA family (such as ODA X6-2S, L and HA). What other advice do I have? Stability is very good. There has been no downtime. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? Scalability means you can increase the storage. How is customer service and technical support? ODA support is very good. Oracle support is very good. Online support is very good. Our local partner is also very good. Which solutions did we use previously? Previously I was using Exadata. Our technical team was already familiar with Oracle products so that's why we choose ODA. We had a license for Oracle Database. My advice would depend on the needs of the company. In regards to licensing, it is cheaper to maintain for Oracle applications, and it's an all-in-one solution. How has it helped my organization? We had been using a separate server, separate storage, and a separate switch for our Oracle Database, which was costing us a lot of money, because you have to have licenses for each of those devices. But now we have all of them in just one box. We don't have to buy a separate switch. We don't have to buy separate storage. We have everything in just one box. That's the advantage. It has been cost effective. They have really helped us on that line. What needs improvement? Currently in Ghana, where I work, there are just a few companies that can afford it, because the price is a little bit high. Even though for the private sector it's not that high, if this would come in much smaller boxes, and much cheaper, it would be much more affordable for SMBs, that's small and medium businesses. That would be helpful. What do I think about the stability of the solution? It's very, very stable. From the day of installation we did not have any challenges with this product. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? Scalability is not limited. It's scalable because you can add a standard device to the storage space. You are just looking at storage space. You are not looking for memory, because the memory range is high enough. And the capacity is also very fast. How is customer service and technical support? I've worked with HPE, I've worked with other vendors' support. In terms of phone support, I get faster response from Oracle. The support is the highest standard I've seen. They will get to you by all means, and attend to you, the challenges that you have, and in a timely manner. They have the expertise and they have the know-how. The first time we contact them, our issue is solved. Which solutions did we use previously? The reason for our switching is that we wanted an all-in-one solution across databases, and we need to implement an all-in-one solution for our customers' databases. This is very simplified, it's easy to use, you can be in production immediately when you buy the product. That's why we went that direction. If you work with other companies, you often see a lot of challenges because the storage is usually separate. If they have all-in-one, the licenses are too expensive. What Oracle did was they reduced the price because we are buying their solution. They reduced the prices for the Oracle licenses. How was the initial setup? I can set it up in a matter of a very short time. The worst case scenario is an hour, and that happens only if I don't have the information from the customer, That's when it would take an hour. But if I have all the information in front of me, the box can be set up and ready to use. Which other solutions did I evaluate? We had two products in mind. We had a product from HPE, but we did not go with that product because it required us getting extended storage. We were looking at space in the datacenter; we don't have a lot of rack space in the data center. So, we factored all of that into our decision, and then we decided on Oracle. In addition, it was the licenses, because we use Oracle, and when you buy their product they reduce the cost for you. So, I could use an Oracle database and buy an HPE product where I will not have a reduction in price for licenses. You have to leverage that opportunity from Oracle. What other advice do I have? I give it a nine out of 10 because it gives the customer easy access to a complete database solution within 30 minutes. That is, someone can go live with in 30 minutes of buying the product, it's very fast to use. For instance, if you have a small company that you want to set up, and you don't need to put your infrastructure on the cloud, you buy this product and you are ready to go in the next 30 minutes. That's one of the reasons why I give it that rating. As well, it's easier to manage, because you have a central point of management which is the Oracle ODA. This model allows you to only license the CPU count that you need, rather than the entire capacity. When virtualized, this is supported for both the database and the application tier. How has it helped my organization? The solution has good stability and it is easy to work with. We quickly deployed both database and application workloads in a single appliance on a virtualized platform, based on Oracle VM What needs improvement? Customers cannot cluster multiple appliances together to create a larger cluster (beyond two servers), nor can they expand the internal disk storage of the system beyond two storage trays. This area can be improved. For how long have I used the solution? I have used this solution for two years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? I did not encounter any issues with stability. How is customer service and technical support? I would rate the level of technical support 8/10. Which solutions did we use previously? I previously used Fresh Install. How was the initial setup? The initial setup was quite straightforward. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? The biggest value that customers are seeing, is that it's easy to install, quick to deploy, and easy to consolidate platforms; as opposed to building an environment from scratch. When you get the ODA ( https://www.itcentralstation.com/products/oracle-database-appliance ), all you must do is plug it in and run several commands to get it up and running. This allows for the time to deploy to be really fast. With the addition of the X6-2S, 2M and 2HA, there is a ODA platform that will suit SMB, mid-size and now large scale customer workloads. Particularly interesting, is that now ODA 2S/M supports Standard Edition (SE2) database configurations, which is great for SMB and mid-size consolidation plays. Moreover, the ODA X2-HA adds a new whole area for us and our customers, as it adds an all flash storage array option and virtualization capabilities; further improving consolidation densities. What needs improvement? The platform is primarily used for departmental mid-size companies, although I do know large companies that use it, because it’s a great platform for consolidating. It is unable to expand by much, because of the way the ODA configures when you have two nodes and X number of storage. Oracle has done a good job of letting it expand storage, but the number of nodes is still limited to two. This continues to be an issue for customers. For how long have I used the solution? I have worked with ODA for the last five to six years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? It’s a very stable product. As with any other technology, in initial phases, it needed to be tested; but it has become a very solid platform with a large customer base. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? The initial idea, was that ODA would be a scalable solution; allowing customers tostart with a small number of CPU’s and grow as the demand increased. As aprimarily consolidation platform, you can consolidate more, by moving move up the CPU’s as needed; pricing goes along with that too. How is customer service and technical support? It’s a very solid platform. Oracle has been good at managing the support. How was the initial setup? ODA was initially designed for setup to be easy. Once brought in-house, you plug it in, set up your network connection, run one or two commands, and then set up is complete. Even if it's in a virtualized environment, it's still easy to set up. The quick setup is the beauty and the added value that ODA brings, as opposed to other conversion or engineering systems, which take a little bit more time. Upgrades are the same; due to its automation, many of the commands, designed by the Oracle development team, allow for easy upgrades for the entire end-to-end stack. What other advice do I have? It's a very low-cost, simplistic solution, especially from the infrastructure side. If you have minimal staff and a mid-size environment, this is a perfect platform. We value the following features: * It is easily scalable. * All patches (OS, DB) are bundled by Oracle, so patching dependencies are resolved. * Oracle guarantees that the setup works if you keep up with the patches. How has it helped my organization? Setup of the server and database was easy. At a later point in time we decided to virtualize it, and the basic setup of the box was also quite easy. What needs improvement? The following issues need some attention: * There is no option to combine a second ODA X2 in real application cluster mode. Therefore high availability is limited to same-cabinet RAC, and to offsite standby. * Storage expansion was not possible for ODA X2 so we frequently ran into storage limitations. * Even in an RAC setup it is not easy to avoid downtime because OS patching requires both nodes to be patched with very short overlapping. * Apparently there is a way to avoid downtime, but we did not explore that option anymore because we added a remote standby. For how long have I used the solution? We used the solution from 2012 to 2016. What do I think about the stability of the solution? We had some stability issues. In the beginning, soon after initial setup and go-live, a bug caused one of the nodes to use all cores while on the other node only the requested cores where activated. This led to instability. Also, later a hard disk caused instability while it was "dying". What do I think about the scalability of the solution? We had an issue with scalability, but only in terms of storage. How is customer service and technical support? Technical support was excellent. Which solutions did we use previously? We didn't use a previous solution. This solution was recommended by a consulting company because of ease of scalability and patching. How was the initial setup? Initial setup was easy. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? Pricing was reasonable given the high quality hardware parts used and the high availability. Which other solutions did I evaluate? I was not involved in evaluation of alternative solutions. What other advice do I have? The most valuable feature is the ability to use it as a virtualization platform. This is great because you can run the Oracle Database layer as ODA_BASE domain and use Oracle VM templates to build Oracle applications as VMs so you can also have the application layer in the same platform. How has it helped my organization? It is easy in terms of management of virtual infrastructure. With "oakcli" is the all-in-one CLI to manipulate the virtual environment of the ODA. What needs improvement? It had a lot of bugs, especially with the old patch bundles. There was no support for connecting it to an FC tape drive for backups. For how long have I used the solution? The ODA X3-2 has been up and running since August 2013. This was the first model of the appliance. What do I think about the stability of the solution? We had issues with the virtual infrastructure. Sometimes the shared repositories go into status Unknown, VMs crashing etc. Also the automatic failover of the VMs sometimes failed. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? We had no issues with scalability. It allows only two disk enclosures for storage space, and for servers you can upgrade the RAM. How is customer service and technical support? I would rate the technical support at 8/10. Which solutions did we use previously? Our previous solutions were building a high availability environment for Oracle Database with blocks, server storage OS, network configuration, etc. How was the initial setup? The setup was very easy. It is great to have a fully configured and tested HA environment for Oracle Database in two days. All the built-in automation scripts do it for you. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? If you compare the pricing of ODA vs traditional architecture it can be a bit high but you get more value by minimizing the risk, a short implementation time, and all-in-one patching. Which other solutions did I evaluate? There are no solutions like ODA. What other advice do I have? Overall it is a great product for consolidating Oracle Databases. With the newer models there are a lot of optimizations both in hardware and software. For example the cluster interconnect card went from 10GbE in ODA X3-2 to InfiniBand QDR in ODA X5-2. The "oakcli" has added features with the new patch bundles. It is stable and there have not been any crashes. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? Everybody can use it. It is scalable. How is customer service and technical support? We opened a support ticket for the installation. Which solutions did we use previously? We have a customer who is using IBM or HPE. They are going to buy an Oracle database appliance for the scalability, installation, performance, and high available options. I think this is the reason they want to switch now. Scalability, high availability, easy installation, and good performance are the reasons to switch. How was the initial setup? You can install all of your visual information on the Oracle database appliance. All of your software is on this virtual machine. Another option is to install your database on an older Oracle database appliance, which is recommended and has the best performance. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? I don't know anything about license or prices. Which other solutions did I evaluate? Actually, we always focus on the Oracle products because we are Oracle partners. We didn't compare anything else. What is most valuable? The performance of the system is the solution's most valuable aspect. In combination with the database, it gives perfect results. It's a better system than using other kinds of integrated systems. In general, the ODA control is much simpler to use and offers up the best performance. What needs improvement? Technical support could be much better. The maintenance, for an enterprise system, isn't so great. It's also much expensive. A future release should improve on the avaiability of networking interfaces. Hardware expansions avaiability should be in-line with product support. The solution should have the ability to offer an integrated management dashboard with virtualised systems and oracle DB manager in all DB supported versions. The machine should have a visual monitoring interface, not also for hardware but also to DB and virtualized hosts. For how long have I used the solution? I've been using the solution for two years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? The solution is very stable. We haven't had any issues over the past two years. How are customer service and technical support? We're not too pleased with technical support. The cost to have access to them is way too much money. How was the initial setup? The initial setup was fairly quick. It was easy to deploy. It has led to improved performance, it saves maintenance costs, increases stability and reliability and is a single vendor solution. What needs improvement? Creating a VM on ODA could be improved. For how long have I used the solution? We have been using the solution for two years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? There were no issues with stability. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? There were no issues with scalability. How is customer service and technical support? I would rate the technical support as 8/10. Which solutions did we use previously? We were using IBM P series AIX, using ODA ease patching, installation and support. How was the initial setup? The setup was straightforward, as install and reinstall is configurable with predefined templates. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? I recommend to get a discounted deal from Oracle, especially with the one time setup which was free. Which other solutions did I evaluate? We didn't really evaluate any alternatives. What other advice do I have? It is highly recommended in an environment where no Sys Admin, Infrastructure and Network Team exists. DBA can rack and stack with the easily performed installation. We value the following features: * Performance (we used a bare-metal configuration so I don't know about using it as a virtual environment). * Easy management (it saves a lot of installation and patching time). How has it helped my organization? This box allowed me to consolidate the three most critical databases in one single reliable server (it is actually two nodes in our machine). What needs improvement? The following issues need attention: * I would be happy to see the Oracle Auto Service Request (ASR) pre-installed in it instead of installing it in a separate machine. * The Oracle Integrated Lights Out Manager (ILOM) is quite slow. Sometimes the page takes ages to open. * The shutdown procedure in this box is different from many other servers that I worked with. For example, when you shut down the server, you see the LEDs of the storage part still on, and there is no button for that part to turn the power off. You can only unplug the power socket! For how long have I used the solution? We have been using the solution for two years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? We didn't encounter any stability issues. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? There was a little scalability issue. We noticed that the storage dedicated to the system in one node was less than the other. We therefore needed to expand it. We needed Oracle support to do that for us but it was online and streamlined. How is customer service and technical support? The technical support is very good, but not excellent. Which solutions did we use previously? I didn't use a previous solution. How was the initial setup? The setup was straightforward but we had issues that needed Oracle support to fix for us. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? Frankly I have no clue about pricing. The organization didn't have any issue about paying for the licenses. There is one thing that you need to be aware of. When you buy this box, you buy licenses for a specific number of CPU cores. When you set up the box, you define how many cores you want to enable. If the number of cores that you enable is different from the number of cores that you have in your license, it will be so hard to fix it (according to the Oracle representative claim but I am not sure about that.) Which other solutions did I evaluate? We evaluated RAC servers from other vendors. What other advice do I have? The biggest disadvantage of this server is its availability when you patch the whole machine, i.e. when you patch the entire ODA firmware, not the databases within it. When you do this kind of patching, you must restart the entire server and plan for downtime. This box has a network subnetting IP address pre-configured in it for internal communication between the nodes. If your network has the same network subnetting IP address, you must change it in your network. This box (as of x4-2 and I don't know about the new models) doesn't allow you to change its internal subnetting IP address. The solution is simple to use and easy to maintain. What needs improvement? The testing aspect of the solution could be improved. Right now, it's done by us, but if they'd improve it with tools that would make things easier. If we were able to use Oracle Database to create mobile apps, that would be great. I don't know multiple languages, like Java, etc. I need to learn a separate language, right now in order to do this. For how long have I used the solution? We primarily use the solution for data storage. What do I think about the stability of the solution? The solution does crash. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen occasionally. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? The solution is scalable. We have a few hundred people using the solution currently. How are customer service and technical support? We've never been in touch with technical support. We don't have the internet password needed to connect. We typically use a third party if we require assistance. What other advice do I have? If the database goes down on one of the servers, the load is automatically shifted to another server. You can troubleshoot the one that is down without affecting uptime. What needs improvement? Virtualization needs improvement. It's not easy to back up the virtual machines in the Oracle VM architecture. I would also like to see native support for Veeam Backup Software. For how long have I used the solution? I've been using Oracle Database Appliance for about two years. How are customer service and technical support? Oracle's support is not very good. How was the initial setup? Setup was easy. Everything is step by step from the first to the last stage. What about the implementation team? Therefore, we sell applications to insurance companies, and we use the ODA to configure them to run the application. How has it helped my organization? I think one of the reasons I was looking for a comparison between the SPARC and the Oracle Database Appliance is because, with most other services, we can't get everything combined as we can with the Oracle Database Appliance. We would have to get a server, extra storage, and other devices to set up shop. With the Oracle Database Appliance, once we put our application on the solution, it is enough. What is most valuable? The most valuable feature of the solution is the ability to combine all the data without the need for additional devices. What needs improvement? I am certain that Oracle Servers do not have RAM, not even the usual RAM, or usually obtain OCP. It would be beneficial to have dedicated RAM included in the Oracle Database Appliance. For how long have I used the solution? I have been using the solution for four years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? Oracle Database Appliance is extremely stable. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? Although we have not needed to scale the solution yet, Oracle Database Appliance is scalable. How was the initial setup? The initial setup is straightforward. The deployment takes one business day. What about the implementation team? We implement the solution in-house with the assistance of Oracle technical support when required. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? The solution may be expensive, but when we consider the problems it solves, the stability it provides, and the fact that we don't have to buy separate parts and assemble them into a system, it becomes more affordable. Otherwise, we would have to purchase components from different sources, assemble them, and then pay to resolve any stability issues that arise. What other advice do I have? I give the solution an eight out of ten. There are no other solutions similar to Oracle Database Appliance on the market. I've been looking for others to have compared, but there are none. When our company sells IFS to customers, they often require Oracle Database Appliance support. We provide that for our custom market customers. We manage data stored in databases, overseeing dashboards, and occasionally monetizing the data. Our support involves patching, upgrading, downgrading, and managing migration processes for our customers. Our customers lack knowledge about technologies, managing databases, and initiating processes. They rely on us to provide the necessary support. How has it helped my organization? Nowadays, we try not to use the Oracle Database Application for our customers or new customers, maybe because Oracle pushes us to use their software. What needs improvement? We have faced issues with the product’s documentation. Sometimes, we cannot upgrade or patch it easily. The product has its limitations, and sometimes we face difficulties with these limitations. The performance needs to improve. For how long have I used the solution? I’ve been using this solution for over eight years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? The solution is stable. I rate it a seven out of ten. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? The product is scalable. At the same time, Delphix helps us migrate and save data. Our customers use Oracle Database Appliance for their applications. Whenever there's a requirement regarding migration, backup management, or an increase in speed, we use Delphix. How was the initial setup? The initial setup is straightforward. The deployment doesn't take more than four hours. In some cases, it can even be done in two or three hours, depending on network speed. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? Our company’s management handles this area. Which other solutions did I evaluate? We work with Delphix and Power BI. What other advice do I have? I consider the product a strong solution for our customers, and I don't know any database technologies other than Oracle. Though I don’t prefer the product, it’s good. I recommend it to everyone.
